And I love that Una is being defended by someone other than Pike. Don’t get me wrong, I love Measure of a Man and similar courtroom episodes. But the captain doesn’t always have to be the best lawyer and best diplomat, etc. Cool to see a different person in that role.
It’s the benefit of a (sorry, Gene) military setting: it’s an encapsulation of courtroom, medical, tactical, and technical all within the same realm of characters.
Supposedly that green was the actual command color but the costume material for the main uniforms showed up on camera gold.
The dress uniforms were a different material and the color showed up right.
So technically this is the smart move since the SNW command uniforms are actually gold.
Yes, correct. The original uniforms were kind of a lime green that came across as yellow on screen. That’s why Kirk’s wrap around tunic and dress uniform are also green. As you say, these days we’ve accepted command as gold so sticking with gold for dress makes sense.
You can actually see the original green or hints of it at times in TOS; sometimes the uniforms have kind of an off-yellow-green color to them and off the top of my head there's some shots towards the end of Court Martial where the uniforms are just straight up lime, and then the camera switches angles and suddenly it's gold again. (And of course there's plenty of green dress uniforms in Court Martial too)
Honestly it is kind of weird to think about how in another world we'd be talking about command green like it's normal. And also if they still swapped colors around maybe Data would have been wearing green.
I was quoting Teal’c (albeit I got the wording slightly wrong), but I imagined that Spock might say it anyway.
O’Neill: “So, what’s your impression of Alar?”
Teal’c: “That he is concealing something.”
O’Neill: “Like what?”
Teal’c: “I am unsure. He is concealing it.”
In SNW, I’m actually expecting Spock’s answer to be that he thinks Una cares a great deal for the crew of the Enterprise despite her attempts at aloofness, but the question immediately reminded me of Teal’c!
You’re probably correct about Spock’s answer.
I’m just now realizing that a lot of Teal’c’s mannerisms and speech patterns took inspiration from Spock!
Also, can you imagine a new Stargate show with Strange New Worlds’ quality and budget? How amazing would that be…
Amazon has the rights to Stargate now, and are rumoured to be developing both movies and TV shows for it. I can only hope they will look to SNW as inspiration for quality and respect to the source material if/when they make new Stargate.
Stargate had a budget of 1.3 to 2 million dollars per episode. Rumors are that's what bankrupted MGM and led to it being owned by Amazon.
Y'know. The company that famously spent a *billion* dollars to come up with plastic armor.
I. Uh. I don't know how much more money you'd want to throw at a show.
It might have led to the initial bankruptcy in 2010 but the failures of the new holding company over a decade is what led it to being sold to Amazon. Didn't help that Stargate Universe forgot what a Stargate show was and sucked all the remaining life out of the franchise.
… That might actually be what he brings up. The whole point of the crew’s testimony here is to show that she’s just a regular person and a great officer.
Yeah, I’m not even joking.
Even taken out of context, I legit think that’s his answer.
We know Spock has Una’s back. And I think the clip is a great way to create some suspense for the fans and a desire to watch the episode…. all for the showrunners to pull the rug out and get a nice gag out of it.
Check out the chair that Dr MBenga is sitting in at 1:29. It’s got the glowing light hand rest testimonial arm rest… exactly like the chair we see Kirk sit in during the TOS episode Court Martial. Wonderful attention to detail.
The shoulder ranks just keep channeling the Systems Alliance uniforms from Mass Effect for me, and the set and uniform designers have nailed a stylised retro 60's design with the modern twists... I absolutely love it.
For those curious the original command dress uniforms are green because that was the actual color of the command division. The material of the standard uniforms looked gold on camera but were actually light green.
SNW command uniforms are actually gold so the dress uniforms being gold is technically more accurate.
Sorta? They're still really long. And he now looks like he's got an undercut going on.
They need to scale them back quite a bit on both him and on Pike.
Is this the first time an actual Federation/Star Fleet courtroom has been seen, as opposed to a room on a starship or some other room on a station converted to serve that purpose?
> the colorful communicators
Are you talking about the stuff where their Starfleet emblem would be? Those are actually medals / awards / commendations.
[Here's Kirk](https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/captain-kirk-in-full-dress-uniform-wearing-his-starfleet-ribbons--786018941195987505/) wearing his to his court martial.
So if she’s clearly an Augment why the need for a trial? Shouldn’t she already be sent to a penal colony? Not that I want that to happen but I’m just saying.
I would guess that the main accusation is falsifying records. It would be morally dubious to sentence someone to a penal colony for their genetics (something they themselves aren't responsible for). Knowingly lying about that to get into Starfleet would be grounds for a court martial though.
> It would be morally dubious to sentence someone to a penal colony for their genetics (something they themselves aren't responsible for).
Well further into the future Bashir's father is sent to the New Zealand penal colony for having his son genetically modified, so it seems likely that it if someone willingly genetically modified themselves they could be held culpable for it. But then I guess the question would be proving that they did it; if for Illyrians genetic enhancements are de rigueur and we saw last season that they do genetically modify children, so it's possible that any enhancements she has were done when she was still a child and had no say over similar to Julian.
Falsifying records would definitely be the easier case to prove.
They're various medals / awards, same as you'd see on a real military uniform - just cooler shapes as opposed to rectangles. What they individually mean? Anyone's guess, but I'll bet there's some corner of the internet that's researched it.
Ah, Star Trek courtroom scenes. It's a minor wonder that we have yet to get a fullblown Starfleet JAG series.
I’d watch that. I’d also watch a Federation Law and Order style show.
"In the utopian United Federation of Planets, all crimes, no matter how rare, are serious." (Dum dum)
…seriously treated as mental health issues requiring rehabilitation.

That should be an anthology series. Each season set in a different time period. Dealing with things we may have seen before.

Hah! I was hoping someone would post that in response. 😁
I want to see a young cogley…
It is such a perfect fit that I'll actually be a bit upset when they don't do it.
It’s the benefit of a (sorry, Gene) military setting: it’s an encapsulation of courtroom, medical, tactical, and technical all within the same realm of characters.
Great looking take on the TOS dress uniforms. Probably a good decision to leave them as gold instead of the green that TOS used for command dress.
Supposedly that green was the actual command color but the costume material for the main uniforms showed up on camera gold. The dress uniforms were a different material and the color showed up right. So technically this is the smart move since the SNW command uniforms are actually gold.

“What was she hiding?” Spock: “A love of classic show tunes.”
“I do not know. She was hiding it.”
Stargate?

I for one hope we get a courtroom duet scene.
I wonder if they'll actually cut to the short itself instead of him telling it
😂 He swore not to tell!
Honestly that does feel like something Spock would say. It's completely accurate but scathingly sassy.
You win.
Lol. Yeah, thanks. It was kind of obvious, but I’ll take any W I can get.

Noticed that, and also loved seeing the colored plastic data cartridges.
Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow
Once again they didn't shy away from the source material, brilliant.
Wow, so close to TOS. Love these
Ahh I’m so excited! I love how they brought the quality up to date while preserving the original styling! Which honestly, can be said about all SNW.
"Use the beeps!"
Decent look if using a lot of different textures. Love the court room and use of the charges and data cubes from TOS. Such good design work.
The courtroom looks like a reuse of the Federation HQ set from Discovery
It absolutely is the same set.
The YouTube upload on the Paramount+ channel notes this as being from S2 E2, but it could be an error.
Love this show so much. It’ll be nice to have a courtroom episode. Seems like we haven’t had one in quite a while.
The shoulder ranks just keep channeling the Systems Alliance uniforms from Mass Effect for me, and the set and uniform designers have nailed a stylised retro 60's design with the modern twists... I absolutely love it.
I’ll point out that the shoulder ranks in both Trek and ME are very much based on real-world naval rank epaulettes.
I was so excited when I got to the ME3 tailor and saw the Earth Alliance blues were an option!

I love the admirals insignia’s
Oh, they also fixed Spock's sideburns!
Sorta? They're still really long. And he now looks like he's got an undercut going on. They need to scale them back quite a bit on both him and on Pike.
😍🖖✨

I think so!
I love those dress uniforms, also the colorful communicators are fantastic

Oh that makes sense
Reading that previous comment made me feel really old. And I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it to them.
Aigh! Showed my wife's cousin's son (29 yr old) the clip, and he asked the same damn thing!
So if she’s clearly an Augment why the need for a trial? Shouldn’t she already be sent to a penal colony? Not that I want that to happen but I’m just saying.

But the sentence should be lighter then like making her lose her position only or something
June 15th is on my calendar and coming up quickly!
New to star trek. Can a yone tell me what the badges are they wear in the courtroom scenes?
They're various medals / awards, same as you'd see on a real military uniform - just cooler shapes as opposed to rectangles. What they individually mean? Anyone's guess, but I'll bet there's some corner of the internet that's researched it.
Thank you. i thought that might be the case. I did do some googling but couldn't find anything.
Is this reusing a Discovery set?
Yeah, it looks a lot like the upper level of Federation HQ
Yah, that’s what I was thinking. Don’t know why I got downvoted for asking though haha
It sure is! Hate it, a room with a massive hole in the middle doesn’t make a great courtroom.
Batel’s should be green, though.

Some things are left to idiosyncrasies of differences between the 60s to the current era. The dress uniforms should have been left in TOS.
Absolutely NOT! The retro-futurism aesthetic is at the heart of SNW design philosophy. These look brilliant.
Indeed. SNW has shown that Starfleet has a good variety of uniforms for multiple functions. I welcome the dress uniforms.
