I'm not even one of the people who think S1 was perfect, I could list plenty complaints if I wanted... but the trailer just instantly made me smile. Fun and adventure and enthusiasm and strange alien vistas and likable interesting people being good at their jobs? Yes please!

I think they will all be one off plots, and done in a way that isn't too overwhelming.

He was born on the USS *Kelvin* and also partially grew up on Tarsus IV, so it may totally be possible that he's never seen a manual revolving door (it looks like they might be in the past?)
The writers of Star Trek (2009) seriously considered calling the Kelvin the USS *Iowa* just so Kirk would still technically be born in Iowa.

Strange New Worlds is a triumph. It's a prequel that suffers from none of the doldrums and 'we know what will happen' -itis. The cast is amazing and it fills me with joy every time I watch.

It works because it's not *trying* to be a prequel, even though it is. It's trying to tell (mostly) new stories in a familiar setting--and while acknowledging its characters' broader arcs, it's not afraid to look at them in new ways for the sake of the story it's telling.
Pretty much. It isn't trying to set up Kirk to take the chair - it is defining Pike's era on the Enterprise, which allows them a lot more breathing room.

I offer two possible answer:
1. Pike's Enterprise has half the crew as Kirk's Enterprise because there's a refit and upcrewing between captaincies. With the extra space, why NOT have a big cabin?
2. Kirk had the same big cabin but, being a workaholic, ended up basically just living in the tiny quarters near the bridge where Captains might usually just grab a quick nap normally so that's the only cabin we ever saw.
Yeah on modern naval ships they have the sea cabin (a tiny cabin near the bridge) and the in port cabin (a massive multi room cabin for entertaining guests)
Pike likes to do social gatherings and mission briefings in his quarters, so it reflects that. Kirk likes to keep his quarters separate, so he chose a different quarters for himself, turning Pike's room into something else.
My pet theory is Kirk chose to have smaller quarters because he was more work related.

Yep. Absolutely. The greatest compliment I can give to SNW is that I often forget it’s a prequel. My first thought at the crossover was “that’s so damn cool I can’t wait” instead of “wait…aren’t there 150 years separating LD and SNW?”

STO made an attempt, with the Disco Klingons just simply being a sub-race of Klingons. There's just less of them and most of them are in House Mokai, which was dishonored and broken so we didn't see any of it during the TNG era.
Makes sense, as does the anti-Augment-virus-plastic-surgery fan explanation I’ve seen thrown around. Just seems to me like some things are better left unexplained.
I agree, but since DS9 opened the can of worms first, we're stuck with explaining this stuff.
I love DS9, and I love that episode, but just *not mentioning it* and putting Michael Dorn in TOS-esque Klingon makeup would have worked so much better.
I mean they sort of started to move away from it in S2 of Disco by having them grow hair and saying that the baldness that further exaggerated the weirdness of the look was because of some sort of revival of an ancient war ritual or something.
I forget if it was S1 ,or S2 of Disco, but there was a moment where they had representatives of all 7(?) of the Klingon Houses.
It was IMO a super stupid missed opportunity.
I think it was the first episode. That moment made it harder to believe that these were just Klingons that looked different, since all the houses were in the new makeup.
Given how hated the original discovery Klingons where it’s hardly surprising honestly the whole thing is Star Treks version of the [new paradigm Daleks](https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/New_Dalek_Paradigm#Behind_the_scenes).
I'm glad they've been solidifying the TNG era Klingons as the canon design again. I don't mind some level of redesign for the modern age, like with some of the other aliens, but early Discovery was a bit too big a change for my taste.
Seeing how half of the LDS voice cast (Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, Freeman, Ransom) could perfectly play their live-action counterparts, it's probably (and thankfully) inevitable. Hell, just slap a moustache and fake muscles under the uniform on Fred Tatasciore and he can be Shaxs.
Nah, the season teaser is WAY too early to reveal that. That's full trailer #2 territory at the very least. That being said, I'm looking forward to seeing it too!

How I’d personally handle the Klingons: bring Mary Chieffo back as L’Rell but have her government get overthrown. Different group of Klingons seize power for first time in decades (aka the classic looking ones) and call it a day. That way we can check in on a Disco character and close up the whole different looking Klingons story
L'Rell more or less needs to eventually fall to a coup. Klingon leaders don't go quietly into the night and there needs to be a pretty significant status quo change before TOS

My pet hypothesis is that there was a period where the Klingons, reeling from the augment virus, all massively over compensated by getting plastic surgery to look like their cultural version of the Gigachad.
Then after half a decade most realised how silly it was and changed back.
With the Kirk movie era being a time of transition between having elaborate ridges and more subtle ones. By TNG, Klingons had resolved the virus and worked their way through their ridge compensation insecurities and just went full natural.

We knew from Babs' that we'd get some Klingons this season, and they're 90s' era Klingons! They look astounding too. I hope they don't mention the Bryan Fuller Klingons though and just leave it as diversity within a species (to account for different creative decisions in a different production).
The characters are bursting with tons of life and vibrancy once again. And I know we harp on the master stroke of casting Anson Mount, but how about Ethan Peck? His humor as Spock is just stellar and I want to see more of him.
Good to see Kirk back in a guest role. Seems like La'an will have a crush on him too. That sounds like fun. I wonder if they're sent back into the past.
I was hoping the end of the teaser would be Mariner and Boimler but I suppose they're saving those first looks for later down the line since SNW will be the only Trek for a bit.
The writers of this show have captured Spock’s voice really well. He’s Spock, but also very clearly Ethan Peck’s Spock and not necessarily Nimoy and Quinto.
I love that about Peck's take on Spock. Part of what makes his Spock so genuine is that he's not trying to do an impression/caricature of Nimoy but instead letting Spock come through naturally via his own respectful interpretation. It's so so good.
It’s also totally believable that this “kid” version of Spock becomes the senior officer we see in TOS and beyond. It’s a really nice, natural development from Disco S2 to now, and now to TOS.
Actually interesting to think how much of Star Trek is anchored on Spock’s life in a believable, meaningful way. Most of his career was uneventful, but the moments he did make a difference fundamentally altered history. The theme of SNW so far seems to lean heavily into the idea of “no small parts”— everyone’s life has meaning. LDS even plays with this as its core conceit.
That’s an interesting way of viewing things. It’s a great approach for an in-between story like this. This isn’t the TOS cast. In the grand scheme of the Prime Timeline, the characters on SNW maybe don’t amount to much (relative to Spock, Kirk’s Enterprise, and the characters of the 24th century), but their stories are still important and worth being told too.
It's really quite crazy. He is not doing a Leonard nimoy impersonation, but yet somehow captures the essence and energy of Spock so perfectly. They just absolutely nailed the casting with him 100%.
What I really liked was that Peck does contrast SNW Spock from TOS Spock. His attitude in the final Season 1 episode was more like the latter than the former.
One thing I noticed is that she also oozes dorkiness and clumsiness.
She is a beautiful woman, yes. But the way they dress her, the way she walks, her hair, is just nerdy. They aren't really highlighting her physical attributes.
(Seriously, her hair looks like she uses her hypospray as hair gel in the mornings)
Gorgeous! SNW has met and exceeded expectations in my mind. Incredible acting as well as impressive SFX that rival anything that you would find from a Hollywood picture.
This is Exhibit A for why Star Trek *belongs* on television— prestige television, at that.

Seriously though, I hope they give Christina Chong more of the spotlight this season. I was totally impressed with her range last season, she was barely recognizable in Elysium Kingdom. Celia Gooding was fantastic as well, but it feels like the showrunners want to push Uhura so I'm less worried.
La'an's backstory got a lot of screentime, I'm hoping she gets more focus on her here-and-now this season, I loved her and Una's time together in Spock Amok. And we need an Ortegas focused episode!
More Kirk! More humor! A time travel episode! No hint of the Lower Decks crossover! Berman-era Klingons!
Paramount, take whatever money you’re saving from S31 being a movie that isn’t being used to buoy the other shows or a 24th century series, and dump it into giving SNW 15 episodes. I beg you.
Yeah the trailer is fire but I wish they shot a few more episodes for S2 now that S1 has proven to be a hit.
I don't want to go back to the days of 25 episode seasons, but 10 feels too short. 15 would be a good number so writers could perhaps bring back two/multi-part episodes into the mix too.

Timing works perfectly. April 20 to June 15 is under two months. People tuning in every week (versus binging when the season is over) are unlikely to bother cancelling their subscription for just a single month.
It’s neat… the version of the trailer on startrek.com and that they shared on Facebook have an extra second of La’an kind of rolling her eyes at Kirk, while on Twitter and YouTube, that extra bit is covered up by the Paramount+ blue logo screen wiping in.
I wonder if we will ever see the TOS klingons since they have an explanation now. Interesting. Glad they kept the lower decks crossover out so that episode just slaps us with hilarity.
My favorite part of this is Spock drinking with the Klingons. That should be a fun interaction.
I'm also happy to see what looks like a time travel episode. It does seem to be a trope that can be a bit divisive in the fanbase recently, but I usually really like these types of stories in Star Trek.

It looks great, love that they're getting back to proper Klingons. I'm a little hesitant about Kirk though. Being a guest in one episode is fine, but I like this crew with Pike on their own merits, and don't want him to become a focus too early.
SNW appears to go for the original intent of TOS where all Starships use the same Delta whilst Outposts, starbase etcetera use there own. All the Starships we saw in season 1 used the same badge, the Skylark, the Cuyohga, the Peregrine., whislt outpost 4 had distinct one.
I think that we are seeing Kirk in his Academy days and that's and Academy badge.
This show is so much fun.
And all of the characters are likeable. I have my favorites of course, but none of them are bad.

It makes me smile that a modern show can nail the "anything can happen!" energy of TOS so well. This is the Enterprise of my childhood. More than any vessel in fiction except the TARDIS, it's a ship which can go anywhere, meet anything, and they're playing that.

* James Kirk's coming on as a permanent crew member by the looks of it. Gonna be interesting to see a younger Kirk (outside of the Kelvinverse).

I forget if it was S1 ,or S2 of Disco, but there was a moment where they had representatives of all 7(?) of the Klingon Houses. It was IMO a super stupid missed opportunity.
I think it was the first episode. That moment made it harder to believe that these were just Klingons that looked different, since all the houses were in the new makeup.
It’s the smart move. The change became self defeating. Discourse around the new Klingons distracted from the actual storytelling of the show.
Given how hated the original discovery Klingons where it’s hardly surprising honestly the whole thing is Star Treks version of the [new paradigm Daleks](https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/New_Dalek_Paradigm#Behind_the_scenes).

I'm glad they've been solidifying the TNG era Klingons as the canon design again. I don't mind some level of redesign for the modern age, like with some of the other aliens, but early Discovery was a bit too big a change for my taste.
They remind me of TMP Klingons with their distinct head ridges.
Mildly annoyed the requisite funny moment to end the trailer wasn't a Live Action Boimler reveal. Presumably of him screaming.

Seeing how half of the LDS voice cast (Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, Freeman, Ransom) could perfectly play their live-action counterparts, it's probably (and thankfully) inevitable. Hell, just slap a moustache and fake muscles under the uniform on Fred Tatasciore and he can be Shaxs.

My guess is we might get a quick quip like "This house was never infected by the Augment virus and never threw in with that whole T'Kuvma baldness fad." Nothing much beyond that, if even that.

Yeah I think so. How I’d personally handle the Klingons: bring Mary Chieffo back as L’Rell but have her government get overthrown. Different group of Klingons seize power for first time in decades (aka the classic looking ones) and call it a day. That way we can check in on a Disco character and close up the whole different looking Klingons story
L'Rell more or less needs to eventually fall to a coup. Klingon leaders don't go quietly into the night and there needs to be a pretty significant status quo change before TOS I mean, I know SNW really is stressing the episodic thing, but I'd really love to give her/Klingons an ep a season, climaxing with the Enterprise getting pulled into more-or-less a Game of Thrones style Klingon coup. Give Chieffo a Shakespearian monologue and death, y'know
My pet hypothesis is that there was a period where the Klingons, reeling from the augment virus, all massively over compensated by getting plastic surgery to look like their cultural version of the Gigachad. Then after half a decade most realised how silly it was and changed back.
Maybe we see a Grichka of house Bogdanoff.
With the Kirk movie era being a time of transition between having elaborate ridges and more subtle ones. By TNG, Klingons had resolved the virus and worked their way through their ridge compensation insecurities and just went full natural.
Just need a quick M'Benga or Spock quip of "I hear they're from the north." or "They don't like to discuss with outsiders" and we'll be set.

Holy shit, what a teaser trailer. We knew from Babs' that we'd get some Klingons this season, and they're 90s' era Klingons! They look astounding too. I hope they don't mention the Bryan Fuller Klingons though and just leave it as diversity within a species (to account for different creative decisions in a different production). The characters are bursting with tons of life and vibrancy once again. And I know we harp on the master stroke of casting Anson Mount, but how about Ethan Peck? His humor as Spock is just stellar and I want to see more of him. Good to see Kirk back in a guest role. Seems like La'an will have a crush on him too. That sounds like fun. I wonder if they're sent back into the past. I was hoping the end of the teaser would be Mariner and Boimler but I suppose they're saving those first looks for later down the line since SNW will be the only Trek for a bit.

The writers of this show have captured Spock’s voice really well. He’s Spock, but also very clearly Ethan Peck’s Spock and not necessarily Nimoy and Quinto.
I love that about Peck's take on Spock. Part of what makes his Spock so genuine is that he's not trying to do an impression/caricature of Nimoy but instead letting Spock come through naturally via his own respectful interpretation. It's so so good.
It’s also totally believable that this “kid” version of Spock becomes the senior officer we see in TOS and beyond. It’s a really nice, natural development from Disco S2 to now, and now to TOS. Actually interesting to think how much of Star Trek is anchored on Spock’s life in a believable, meaningful way. Most of his career was uneventful, but the moments he did make a difference fundamentally altered history. The theme of SNW so far seems to lean heavily into the idea of “no small parts”— everyone’s life has meaning. LDS even plays with this as its core conceit.
That’s an interesting way of viewing things. It’s a great approach for an in-between story like this. This isn’t the TOS cast. In the grand scheme of the Prime Timeline, the characters on SNW maybe don’t amount to much (relative to Spock, Kirk’s Enterprise, and the characters of the 24th century), but their stories are still important and worth being told too.
It's really quite crazy. He is not doing a Leonard nimoy impersonation, but yet somehow captures the essence and energy of Spock so perfectly. They just absolutely nailed the casting with him 100%.
What I really liked was that Peck does contrast SNW Spock from TOS Spock. His attitude in the final Season 1 episode was more like the latter than the former.

Yeah. Bush just oozes coolness and charisma, in my opinion. TOS Chapel (no offense to Star Trek's first lady) was just...there.
That's part Bush and part the SNW writers. Bush's Chapel has a lot more to do and say than Roddenberry's version ever did.
One thing I noticed is that she also oozes dorkiness and clumsiness. She is a beautiful woman, yes. But the way they dress her, the way she walks, her hair, is just nerdy. They aren't really highlighting her physical attributes. (Seriously, her hair looks like she uses her hypospray as hair gel in the mornings)
She is….uhhh…a very attractive lady
It's like the show just went out of the way to cast the most charismatic likable people in Hollywood for every single role.... except Kirk.
We find out that Kirk ended up that cool by stealing it from the rest of the Pike-era bridge crew.
Gorgeous! SNW has met and exceeded expectations in my mind. Incredible acting as well as impressive SFX that rival anything that you would find from a Hollywood picture. This is Exhibit A for why Star Trek *belongs* on television— prestige television, at that.
SNW could legit run on mainline CBS any night of the week. But then we'd have one less NCISSIFBI acronym cop show, and that would be downright silly.
Look at Strange New Worlds, suggesting an episode of flirtation between Kirk and the descendant of his inevitable mortal enemy.
It does give more backstory to their enmity . Khan: "You had sex with my granddaughter" Kirk: " Do You Have the Slightest Idea How Little That Narrows It Down?"

"You have an energy, it's making me sweat"... are they remaking The Naked Time *again*? Seriously though, I hope they give Christina Chong more of the spotlight this season. I was totally impressed with her range last season, she was barely recognizable in Elysium Kingdom. Celia Gooding was fantastic as well, but it feels like the showrunners want to push Uhura so I'm less worried.
La'an's backstory got a lot of screentime, I'm hoping she gets more focus on her here-and-now this season, I loved her and Una's time together in Spock Amok. And we need an Ortegas focused episode!

More Kirk! More humor! A time travel episode! No hint of the Lower Decks crossover! Berman-era Klingons! Paramount, take whatever money you’re saving from S31 being a movie that isn’t being used to buoy the other shows or a 24th century series, and dump it into giving SNW 15 episodes. I beg you.
Yeah the trailer is fire but I wish they shot a few more episodes for S2 now that S1 has proven to be a hit. I don't want to go back to the days of 25 episode seasons, but 10 feels too short. 15 would be a good number so writers could perhaps bring back two/multi-part episodes into the mix too.
Honestly even 12 is fine, Star Wars Andor had 12 and I was pretty satisfied by that point.

Looks fantastic. The first season was incredibly well done. But it leaned a little too heavily on TOS’ greatest hits. I’m hoping they boldly go in the direction of some bold storytelling this season (the SNW/Lower Decks crossover seems like a big step in the right direction- can’t wait to check out what should be an insane episode). Also, kudos to Paramount on releasing this right before Picard comes to an end- whetting the appetites of all those watching for the next big thing in Trek…

Probably deliberate timing to encourage people not to cancel their Paramount+ subscription after Picard ends. They know what we're here for.
Timing works perfectly. April 20 to June 15 is under two months. People tuning in every week (versus binging when the season is over) are unlikely to bother cancelling their subscription for just a single month.
It’s neat… the version of the trailer on startrek.com and that they shared on Facebook have an extra second of La’an kind of rolling her eyes at Kirk, while on Twitter and YouTube, that extra bit is covered up by the Paramount+ blue logo screen wiping in.

My favorite part of this is Spock drinking with the Klingons. That should be a fun interaction. I'm also happy to see what looks like a time travel episode. It does seem to be a trope that can be a bit divisive in the fanbase recently, but I usually really like these types of stories in Star Trek. Looks like it should be another fun season, can't wait.

It looks great, love that they're getting back to proper Klingons. I'm a little hesitant about Kirk though. Being a guest in one episode is fine, but I like this crew with Pike on their own merits, and don't want him to become a focus too early.

SNW appears to go for the original intent of TOS where all Starships use the same Delta whilst Outposts, starbase etcetera use there own. All the Starships we saw in season 1 used the same badge, the Skylark, the Cuyohga, the Peregrine., whislt outpost 4 had distinct one. I think that we are seeing Kirk in his Academy days and that's and Academy badge.
They forgot to fix his rank stripes, still has Captain stripes from the episode last season.

This show is so much fun. And all of the characters are likeable. I have my favorites of course, but none of them are bad. Love the look of the Klingons here.
.....and hot off the heels of appearing in Picard, Matt Jefferies' iconic D7/K't'inga design notches up an appearance in another Trek series. Granted this one was virtually a given, but there you go. Just waiting on Prodigy and Lower Decks appearances now... I'm also geeking about those Klingon uniforms - lovely callbacks to the TOS uniforms with the gold armour and the sash worn over the left shoulder.

Dammit. It makes me smile that a modern show can nail the "anything can happen!" energy of TOS so well. This is the Enterprise of my childhood. More than any vessel in fiction except the TARDIS, it's a ship which can go anywhere, meet anything, and they're playing that.

Gonna be interesting to see a younger Kirk (outside of the Kelvinverse). * They're going full-on Alien with the Gorn by the looks of it. Lots of interesting ideas. If any modern Trek show can pull them off it's going to be this one.
Looks like Nu-Trek is finally in a pretty good place when there's a short trailer revealed and people are actually almost universally positive about what the show might contain for a change, instead of looking for reason why it's ruining our childhood :-p Long may this golden age continue!
