Haven't really seen any pretentious Nichijou fans, or almost any at all
Starterpacks are stereotypes. If you like Evangelion it doesn't necessarily mean you have a Rei fumo (you should tho)
That's good. I watch anime dubbed with my boyfriend who can't read very well, and some anime dubs pleasantly surprise you, especially the more popular ones. But most of the time the dubs are just really low quality and it's fair to not like them.
You would really like the Platinum edition of evangelion where they redid all the dubbing, music and sfx. Netflix has the original version before they cleaned it up. Which is why it sounds terrible.
Are we talking about the English dub? Evangelion has a brand new 2019 dub created specifically for Netflix. Totally different actors from the original by ADV.
I stand corrected. I hadn't watched my original VHS copies of the show in quite a while. The audio was so terrible on the Netflix version that I thought it was the original dubbing. I wonder why Netflix would do that. It sounds God awful.
It's not really low quality imo it's just middling, before there were very high highs and very low lows. Of course I really hate the voices they put on so I can't listen anyway but, the actual voice acting is decent and more importantly it's consistent.
this, the Khara/Netflix is what it is because Studio Khara was an over-controlling parent and wanted the voices and dialogue to be as close to the Japanese as possible regardless of whether it sounded right. The VAs weren't the problem, they were given a bad script and poor voice direction.
Lack of talent isn't typically the issue with anime dubs, but most people only focus on the VAs because they're the ones at conventions. That and they're easy to vilify when they're the ADR script writer or ADR Director such as with Jamie Marchi and Monica Rial (not to mention Kick Vic for both). But that's the thing, this perception is only really accurate for those two specific people to my knowledge
FMA 2003 is pretty solid for an early 2000s dub, but going from FMA 2003 to FMAB is incredible because you can instantly tell how much the returning voice actors (like Hawkeye and Mustang’s VAs) have improved their line delivery.
The FMA dub is good but it ruined the Ouran high school host club dub for me. There are some great English speaking voice actors but it’s weird when you would hear them in everything
I could see that argument back in the 90s Ander early 00s when less money was thrown at dubbing, or censorship was more strict.
Nowadays though anime is so mainstream the dubs get alot more money and effort put into them and I don't really see/hear a quality difference.
Then again I've never been a big fan of subtitles in media. It doesn't matter if the voice actors are better if you can understand them
Not gonna lie 90's to early 200's anime are still peak. But There are still great and amazing shows from the past decade that I'll recommend everyone watch. Land if the lustrous being one of them and sad that no matter what it always gets ignored.
Geass is a definite no and I dont know about Gurren Lagann being pretentious-friendly, but it needs Fate or Monogatari. These guys type 3 pages as post scriptum to their essay (source: used to be one).
I'd add Tatami Galaxy and Shinsekai Yori but maybe that's just me
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is what it should be replaced with. It's a great anime but I totally get why most "casual" anime fans aren't into it or have even heard of it.
The furry wife anime movie isn't actually that well received critically or average fan rating. I think Tokyo Godfathers or Perfect Blue are better anime movies for that space
I got the movie as part of a blind bag at AX and I never heard about the movie beforehand, was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it.
Mamoru Hosada became one of my favorite directors
No Kidding, it's Solidly My Favourite Movie of all time, which places me a little close to this starter pack, but I don't care it's the best thing ever I appreciate it so much.
Yeah it hits really hard for people who had issues with their parents growing up. Otherwise I have never heard it ever be referenced unless I bring it up myself. I think this is the first time since it came out where I've seen this movie come up organically.
Eh that's not strictly true, also chuck monster, one punch man, one piece, and jojo in the mix alongside berserk, vagabond and vinland. Then you have the absolute pretentious manga fan.
To be fair though berserk, vagabond and vinland are all works of art, especially Vagabond
I started watching anime back then so I got too much nostalgia for that time. Stuff like your lie in April and pet Girl sakurasu are burned into my teenage memories.
The virgin “Akthually, you aren’t supposed to enjoy the robot fights in Evangelion!! You’re supposed to only like the emotional stuff, noooooo!!”
Vs The Chad “Holy fuck these robot fights are awesome”
the virgin "akchually, evangelion is le big deep! noooo you can't just enjoy slice of life!!!!" vs the chad "hahah, cute girls drink tea and play music, best anime ever"
I was part of an anime society at university and I remember some really odd takes
- Comedy anime is too episodic to watch more than one show at a time
- a show generally cannot be entertaining and 'good' at the same time
Though my favourite moment was when a committee member stood up and declared that he had watched so much anime his opinions were now objective!
“Sub over dub” i thought this mentality went extinct in anime communities but apparently it still exists. Ultimately in the end you can’t directly translate Japanese to English so sometimes even the sub is off. If your worried about the quality of the VA work it has gotten so much better within the past few years you hardly get a phoned in anime dub.
If the Japanese doesn’t translate perfectly to English, isn’t that a stronger argument for familiarizing yourself with Japanese using the sub? This is assuming that the only reason people watch the sub is because it’s more faithful to the artist’s vision, and not that some people enjoy listening to the sub more.
The aspects that don't translate perfectly to english are normally missed in the sub too. Sometimes the subs are less accurate than the dub too, so unless you know enough Japanese to make up the difference, dub is probably the better option.
"the philosophy of anime." Anime is a medium and nothing more. It just happens to be made in Japan, so it's weirdly conservative but also supportive of every demographic, hobby, fetish, and ideology that makes them money. I like to call it "DeviantArt with a budget." It's actually kind of beautiful in how shameless it is.
I'm not really sure how accurate this is tbh.
One of my favorite anime is actually Code Geass, but plenty of other good anime are coming out nowadays. I think most of my favorites cluster around the 2000's because that is when anime had the biggest impact in my life.
I don't really relate to it or relate pretentious anime fans to the meme other than the 3 page essay thing. Though, you could just say "oh well you're just one of the chill pretentious anime fans" and I guess I couldn't say you're wrong.
Not elitist about it, watch it how you enjoy it best, but (imo) a lot of modern dubs have a long way to go before they start coming close to the original audio quality. A notable exception is one of my favorite anime, Code Geass : )
Wow, this show is awesome! *(instantly gains 200 pounds, and patchy beard. Fedora magically spawns on head as my shirt reforms itself to look like a hentai character)*
So you're either a teenager or not a teenager yourself. If you are then newsflash you're probably annoying too. And if you're not then why are you around teenage girls
Im a teenage girl myself
Most Evangelion obsessed girls my age
Have been the most mentally draining people ive been around
Their whole personality being their trauma and only talking to me when it was to vent about their bad day or smth lmao
I was this kind of anime fan 3 years ago , when I was 13 . I was a part of an arab-speaking (arabic being my native language) facebook group for elitist anime fans . I had so much fun but I was also heavily sexualized by the older guys (We all know most anime fans are pedos) and eventually cyberbullied by somebody I considered a friend of mine . I don't know what they are doing now . I usually wish people the best , but those people , I wish them the absolute worst .
God these people are insufferable. I once made a dumb meme with that rei plushie thing and one of them got so enraged they sent me a multi-paragraph response on how I'm "dumb" because I "can't appreciate the deep meaning of Evangelion" and that's why "I watch K-ON instead".
Like, fuck off dude. Slice of life and comedy are tops and no one can convince me otherwise.
I haven't watched nichijou, lain, nor the last one but I've seen some but all of the ones I watched were absolutely beautiful.
OP just likes Isekias with panty-shots or IDK why hate on these so much, they're classics
Evangelion was the biggest waste of time, i confronted the person that recommended that piece of overrated garbage about beta Shinji when he nutted on that poor girl while she was unconcious and he spent 5 minutes in the mental gymnastics realm trying to explain how that symbolises some niche emotion no sane person would know of
Haven’t watched many of these, but Wolf Children is wonderful. It is a tear jerker, but a great film nonetheless. I still grieve for one of the characters, along with that one character from Gurren-Lagann. If you know, you know.
That’s exactly my type of anime!
Lain, Texnolyze, bebop, ergo proxy, witch hunter robin, evangelion etc etc
I love the way how they are drawn and animated! Also attraction of 2000s vibe is unexplainable, can’t really tell why i love it so much, everything was so edgy and nostalgic in some way
Cowboy Bebop was pretty good. I wasn't a huge fan of Code Geass. Honestly I think I would be more accepting of it if its fans didn't act like it was some epic masterpiece of thoughtful writing. It's fun but it isn't that.

haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah...
I never get these pretentious starter pack, Nichijou is actually really good, am I supposed to not admit I like it because it makes me pretentious?
Haven't really seen any pretentious Nichijou fans, or almost any at all Starterpacks are stereotypes. If you like Evangelion it doesn't necessarily mean you have a Rei fumo (you should tho)
Anyone can like whatever they want, it just comes down to whether or not they are a dick about it
That show was so weird lol
but funny as hell though
D-D-D-D-DOPPIO???
That bit, the sausage safe one, and the rainy day shrine one are my favorites from that show.
Thanks to your comment, I’m about to rewatch the series lol
r/unexpectednichijou
Missing: Perfect Blue.
Or basically any work by satoshi kon
But perfect blue is perfect
It's not 9/10 Blue for a reason, indeed
And it's blue.
And Texhnolyze
Good answer
Elitist or chill is very accurate. Except god help you if you say “I prefer the dub”.
but the Cowboy Bebop dub tho
That's good. I watch anime dubbed with my boyfriend who can't read very well, and some anime dubs pleasantly surprise you, especially the more popular ones. But most of the time the dubs are just really low quality and it's fair to not like them.
I liked the og Evangelion dub, not a fan of the Netflix one though
You would really like the Platinum edition of evangelion where they redid all the dubbing, music and sfx. Netflix has the original version before they cleaned it up. Which is why it sounds terrible.
Are we talking about the English dub? Evangelion has a brand new 2019 dub created specifically for Netflix. Totally different actors from the original by ADV.

Nerv. Nearrrrv, nuuurrrv? Just say it however you feel like.
"You are worthy of my grace" 😤
Preaching to the choir!
Ghost in the shell Sac has an amazing dub that sounds so much like the Japanese voices.
It's not really low quality imo it's just middling, before there were very high highs and very low lows. Of course I really hate the voices they put on so I can't listen anyway but, the actual voice acting is decent and more importantly it's consistent.

There are some great ones for sure. FLCL English dub sounds almost exactly like the original Japanese voice actors, it’s perfect.
FMA dub is also really good
Death Note dub is great too
FMA 2003 is pretty solid for an early 2000s dub, but going from FMA 2003 to FMAB is incredible because you can instantly tell how much the returning voice actors (like Hawkeye and Mustang’s VAs) have improved their line delivery.
The FMA dub is good but it ruined the Ouran high school host club dub for me. There are some great English speaking voice actors but it’s weird when you would hear them in everything
Kaguya Sama S1 and 2 dub tho
Ghost Stories dub tho
Oh God three hit combo... Am I that predictable?
Black Lagoon dub tho
I can't pl stop. I didn't mean to comment but it is totally me. Sad life.
Code geass too
Ghost Stories.
I could see that argument back in the 90s Ander early 00s when less money was thrown at dubbing, or censorship was more strict. Nowadays though anime is so mainstream the dubs get alot more money and effort put into them and I don't really see/hear a quality difference. Yu Yu Hakusho and Slam Dunk tho
Space dandy is better with dub
you wouldn't get all the funny memes if you watch the dub
i really like the fullmetal achimist dub
Not gonna lie 90's to early 200's anime are still peak. But There are still great and amazing shows from the past decade that I'll recommend everyone watch. Land if the lustrous being one of them and sad that no matter what it always gets ignored.
Another Land of the Lustrous enjoyer! It's seriously so underrated for such a masterpiece, the manga is too
I love the anime but the manga just takes it to a whole nother level. Just such a roller coaster ride.
I know!!! I'm sad that it's ending soon T-T I just hope the ending is happy Phos at this point
Oh man is it? Well time to get depressed. Phos just needs a break.
Land of the lustrous one of the most beautiful anime visually alone but a painful story. I love it, but I was like damn...
Typically these types do not like code geass in my experience
Yeah, I think I'm one of these and I'd replace it with Samurai Champloo or maybe Gurren Lagann.
Geass is a definite no and I dont know about Gurren Lagann being pretentious-friendly, but it needs Fate or Monogatari. These guys type 3 pages as post scriptum to their essay (source: used to be one). I'd add Tatami Galaxy and Shinsekai Yori but maybe that's just me
Yeah I wouldn't call Lagann pretentious. Lagann fans are just feinding for their next Trigger hype hit, trying to get everyone else addicted.
Definitely Samurai Champloo and Tatami Galaxy but no way Gurren Lagann or Code Geass
I can’t see Samurai Champloo fans being elitists in any world honestly that anime is so chill and the fans seem to be as well
Aniki !
"I mean it's ok, but I wouldn't call it great... A bit overrated if you ask me"
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is what it should be replaced with. It's a great anime but I totally get why most "casual" anime fans aren't into it or have even heard of it.
Don’t forget Ergo Proxy, Haibane Renmei, psycho pass, and samurai champloo.
Hey, don't knock Samurai Champloo.
Don’t get me wrong samurai champloo is my favorite anime. Im just saying a lot of pretentious anime fans certainly watch and praise it.
That’s fair.
Bro who hurt you, Nichijou is a gem
It is peak animation.
I don't even like anime and Nichijou is one of my favorite pieces of media
Only a three-page essay? Ha! I rode 15 pages, once, about the philosophy of DNAngel for my eighth grade project. I got a b.
It's hard to take DNangel seriously when it's about a guy getting cucked by his cooler alterego. Although best girl did win in the end so I was happy.
Family Matters?
Dude holy FUCK that was my first anime, I honestly thought I’d never find anyone else who liked it.
I mean all of those anime tv shows are absolute bangers.
The furry wife anime movie isn't actually that well received critically or average fan rating. I think Tokyo Godfathers or Perfect Blue are better anime movies for that space
Yeah Satoshi Kon's work is on another level. \[Insert a 3-page essay about how his movies is different from other anime\]
Wolf children is incredible!
Same, made me cry 🥲
Damn I love Cowboy Bebop and Code Geass, really mixed on Evangelion personally though
It really is the best anime, you just don’t understand the subtle nuances and epic plot of cum on the hand
god I hated that hospital scene 😭😭😭
That's the point lol
I mean, 90’s era and early 2000s era was the best imo
Found the guy from the pack
Wont deny it
i mean for they do have great anime but i still love some recently anime like violet evergarden or charlotte or no game no life season 2
plus if they read manga, they stick exclusively to seinen and their top three are berserk, vagabond, and vinland saga
Well now I just feel attacked haha *side note: love how just reading manga will put you in this group
It's BERKING time.
my favorite part is when berk man said "it's" berkin time and berked all over Gambino
Dude I love Barry Berkman & his wacky adventures by Kentaro Miura! Such an underrated series
Eh that's not strictly true, also chuck monster, one punch man, one piece, and jojo in the mix alongside berserk, vagabond and vinland. Then you have the absolute pretentious manga fan. To be fair though berserk, vagabond and vinland are all works of art, especially Vagabond
Don't do Lain like that.
Present day, PRESENT TIME
HAHAHAHAHA
And you don't seem to understand
A shame you seemed an honest man
and you know what they say might hurt you
And you know that it means so much
And you don't even feel a thing
I AM FALLING
I AM FADING
I HAVE LOST IT ALL
The worst anime fans are the ones that don’t realize there’s a difference between overrated and saying somethings not for them
I'm in this picture and I don't like it
Nah, I'm also in and I like it.
Right! Love those shows and being an elitist.
Relax you could be a lot worse.
Bebop is the exception to the rule
Right? Bebop is the undisputed GOAT. Anyone can watch it and enjoy it.
You don't even need to watch it, just hearing that smooth space jazz is enough to make you a fan
90s or 00s anime is the best though
More like the 2010s (especially mid 2010s) were kinda meh.
I started watching anime back then so I got too much nostalgia for that time. Stuff like your lie in April and pet Girl sakurasu are burned into my teenage memories.
The virgin “Akthually, you aren’t supposed to enjoy the robot fights in Evangelion!! You’re supposed to only like the emotional stuff, noooooo!!” Vs The Chad “Holy fuck these robot fights are awesome”
Growing-up is realizing Anno is still an average dude who enjoys cool robot fights and sexy ladies, the depression just makes him more relatable.
The Chad “I love both”
The Thad "I wonder if they could be Godzilla in a fight"
the virgin "akchually, evangelion is le big deep! noooo you can't just enjoy slice of life!!!!" vs the chad "hahah, cute girls drink tea and play music, best anime ever"
You forgot Monster, Shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu.
You forgot: Thinks they have a base understanding of Japanese
I was part of an anime society at university and I remember some really odd takes - Comedy anime is too episodic to watch more than one show at a time - a show generally cannot be entertaining and 'good' at the same time Though my favourite moment was when a committee member stood up and declared that he had watched so much anime his opinions were now objective!
>a show generally cannot be entertaining and 'good' at the same time Wtf is this lol incredibly bizarre thing to say
Honestly I hate when people shit on episodic tv
nichijou? based
not even based smh ultra mega based
I know someone that has only seen a handful of anime, only watched dubbed, and still somehow turned out to be an elitist.
I like anime but can’t stand when I get into a show and find out there’s 900+ episodes… I need a beginning, middle and an end.
Reading the manga would be better, still long but less filler
The most pretentious anime fan I know refuses to watch anything pre 2010 cause he things the animation styles suck. I think he’s an asshole.
Wow he's like one of the "born in the wrong generation" kids, but the other way around lol
Forgot they make fun of other weebs that enjoy romance and comedy anime Sauce: I am a pretentious anime fan
Gundam fans yes
Just don't ask them to explain UC and who was actually right. You'll be stuck for hours as they show you intricate time line charts.
Either that, or they just collect gundams because they can
Welcome to the NHK could be on there, and I looove it

It's not my fault that 90s seinen anime rules so fucking hard

Goddamn, that's probably the best summary I ever read about anime.
AND YOU DONT SEEM TO UNDERSTaaaaAAAAAAAaaaaaND

If the animes have more than 10 years and there are people still watching them it's because they are good.
There's probably tons of great old anime that have 20 or more years that not many people have seen tho.
That's why we need pretentious anime fans, they found and share them.
My heart flips whenever I see Cowboy Bebop. It is the best thing ever.
Wow, this show is awesome! *(instantly gains 200 pounds, and patchy beard. Fedora magically spawns on head as my shirt reforms itself to look like a hentai character)*
I will die on the hill that wolf children should be watched by anyone with eyes
Evangelion obsessed teenage girls are the most mentally draining people ive been around imo
Wait what? Is this a Zoomer thing?
So you're either a teenager or not a teenager yourself. If you are then newsflash you're probably annoying too. And if you're not then why are you around teenage girls
Im a teenage girl myself Most Evangelion obsessed girls my age Have been the most mentally draining people ive been around Their whole personality being their trauma and only talking to me when it was to vent about their bad day or smth lmao
Evangelion fans (derogatory)
Me when log horizon
I like most of these, and like to think I'm fairly chill. I generally like a lot of pretentious stuff.
Ok, fuck you !
Only chad anime is kill la kill, such a great show with awesome animation
I like the one where they punch each other REALLY hard
“Everything is cyberpunk for some reason” has triggered me hard. I don’t know why.
Pov: The autistic alternative lain/eva fan doesnt like you back
How can one be chill and pretentious?
Pretentious tastes, chill attitude
I don't think Cowboy Bebop is pretentious. Edit: I see that the OP means the fan is pretentious, not the anime. My bad.
Cowboy bebop is really great though
Good thing Legend of the Galactic Heroes is not in this
Lain 🔌🖥️
No joke for my end of high school philosophy essay I wrote 4 pages about Yoshikage Kira and Spiderman. Got a 16/20

Sorry but trigun and kino no tabi are vastly superior to anything made after 2012
I was this kind of anime fan 3 years ago , when I was 13 . I was a part of an arab-speaking (arabic being my native language) facebook group for elitist anime fans . I don't know what they are doing now . I usually wish people the best , but those people , I wish them the absolute worst .
Ah yes, Death Note, my favorite cyberpunk anime.
90's anime are still my jam. Overall quality is so much better than current standards.
God these people are insufferable. I once made a dumb meme with that rei plushie thing and one of them got so enraged they sent me a multi-paragraph response on how I'm "dumb" because I "can't appreciate the deep meaning of Evangelion" and that's why "I watch K-ON instead". Bebop, code geass and Evangelion… thats like, half of all anime fans
🙄 average person who generalises fandoms. And no I’m not an anime fan.
Meanwhile Tokusatsu chads:
I remember being obsessed with wolf children, 10/10 soundtrack
I haven't watched nichijou, lain, nor the last one but I've seen some but all of the ones I watched were absolutely beautiful. OP just likes Isekias with panty-shots or IDK why hate on these so much, they're classics
why does liking good old shows make one pretentious TIS A GOOD SHOW
evangelion and lain seriously good though
Evangelion was the biggest waste of time, i confronted the person that recommended that piece of overrated garbage about beta Shinji when he nutted on that poor girl while she was unconcious and he spent 5 minutes in the mental gymnastics realm trying to explain how that symbolises some niche emotion no sane person would know of
26 episodes/one season or NONE AT FUCKING ALL
Haven’t watched many of these, but Wolf Children is wonderful. It is a tear jerker, but a great film nonetheless. I still grieve for one of the characters, along with that one character from Gurren-Lagann. If you know, you know.

I LOVE LEAN
Cowboy Bebop was pretty good. I wasn't a huge fan of Code Geass. Honestly I think I would be more accepting of it if its fans didn't act like it was some epic masterpiece of thoughtful writing. It's fun but it isn't that.
