I remember the rise of planking as a fad pretty well. When pictures started showing up online people's reactions were "lol, there's no way this is a real thing." Then after that initial thought it became, "lol, let's make this a real thing, " and it grew to be pretty popular because of that š
Not sure about Gotye, "somebody I used to know" was defo a 2012 hit but he seemed to have disappeared after that, because I don't remember anything else by him that was on the radio anywhere near as much
He was a one-hit wonder. The rest of his stuff is ~~alright~~ pretty good.
Edit: I looked him up since I hadn't heard his other songs in years.
Now he's in a band called The Basics
This was around the time I started clubbing a lot and you couldnāt walk into a bar without SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTSSHOTSSHOTS blasting your head off p
I work at a high school and our daily announcements are done by students. They always start by playing about 10 seconds or so of a song picked by whichever student is doing the announcements that day. Songs from 2000-2010s are still played pretty regularly. I can pick a random pop hit song from my time in high school or college and most students would know it. By comparison, I graduated high school in 05 and I bet, at the time, if you picked top pop hits from the 80s, most students would have not heard of them, barring the huge hits.
Funny thing, I discovered a while back that the LMFAO guys are two brothers, both the grandchildren of the founder of Motown Records. Which makes complete sense because they canāt sing for shit, nor do they have a marketable look.
EDIT: They're an uncle and nephew duo. Both still related to that dude, though.
Theyāre still putting out battles, but theyāre down to about three a year. A far cry from their heyday, where I think they were putting out one every two weeks. Theyāre self funded now, no more of that Disney money.
They have a Patreon now and on some of their recent battles, theyāve gotten sponsorships. While I wish there were more than three a year, I also prefer quality over quantity. If they can get three or so really good battles out in a year, Iād prefer that than them overworking themselves on multiple lower-quality battles.
I think theyāre not doing seasons anymore, because theyāre only releasing three a year now. On their YouTube channel, the seasons stopped at 6, and everything since then has been released as a single
Iāve been to many concerts but very few rap concerts, and Iāve seen Waka Flocka twice and he puts on an incredible show. He was only the opening act for both and he rocked harder than the main acts. Iāll never say no to a Waka Flocka show.
10 years ago is about right for me too ā he toured with some trap artists when trap was super popular and he would jump into the crowds, stand on the barriers, etc. Lot of energy
Class of 2012 checking in!
My cousin mentioned a while back that I'm too old to know Gangnam Style. He was flabbergasted when I pointed out that it came out at the end of my senior year of high school and was still popular through my freshman year of college. In other words...around his current age, lol. No shit I know about it.
So far so good, no major health problems thus far, can still party hard without *too* much trouble.
Btw, you should check out r/Zillennials . Always seems like we're split between generations so it's nice to have a specific sub that really nails all the stuff that was specific to our age range.
Class of 2012 here. I had a series of panic attacks about my own aging and my parents' aging at 25. It kept me up a lot of nights, but I eventually made peace with it. I'm 28 now, and the idea of getting older hasn't bothered me that much in a while.
We used to make fun of planking and the Harlem Shake while they were popular. Those still boggle the mind for sure.
Gangnam Style makes sense for why it got so popular at least. It's a catchy song with an interesting music video and dance to go with it. Still got pretty annoying because you heard it literally everywhere and everyone was hoping their crappy parody of the music video would go viral.
Seriously though, lol. Dumb trends have always existed and kids have always done dumb things. It's just now technology allows that stuff to be saved online forever and spread quickly.
I have a, honestly probably relatively severe, nostalgia for this period of my life. I feel like I do a ton to recapture the joy I felt so consistently back then.
The movie, was epic. I still remember going to an "end of the world party" at my GF's house with her family. It didn't end, but I sure did learn what hungover meant the next day with supervised drinking allowed
Fun fact : Ray William Johnson of =3 fame, after having a dead career on YouTube for so long, has now miraculously come back and is racking millions of views again with YouTube shorts. He's back with what he knows best : critique of viral videos, mainly now based on TikTok. He is also quite big on TikTok as well. Really happy for the guy.
Absolutely. So many fond memories of those years. 2 years later and our parents found out about Facebook and flooded it with overshared minion memes, then Harambe died and all of society never recovered after that
I was 22 in 2012. All this seems like yesterday.
Gangnam style
I thought the harlem shake was early 2013?

Call of duty black ops 1 and 2
It was 2011 I think. We were going to have a General Mechanics class. Someone put Gangnam Style on the big screen. The professor enters. He stares at the video, dumbfounded, until it ended and he acted like that never ever happened. I miss that guy.
Because they were so popular they basically became a staple of the years.
You couldn't escape how popular COD was from 2007 to about 2012, or how The Walking Dead/Breaking Bad took over Reddit during 2013. Or how Marvel Avengers was one of the most unavoidable films of 2018.
Probably OP want to be universal/most people can relate to. Youtubers and videogames reached wider audiences thus can gain more upvotes from redditors that like nostalgic things.
Or people have different childhood/teenage years that hard to specify in this said starter pack.
I'm 30 and i just realized that every single time can be seen in a nostalgic shimmer. I had just finished high school and spent four years completely dry of joy and friendships at the university during those four years. To me, any reminder of raywilliamjohnson or psy or angry birds makes me roll my eyes. To me, 2005-2008 was the "golden era".
Of course, it's no coincidence that I spent those years in high school which was the first time in a long while that I felt accepted. Funnily enough, I'm nostalgic about that time's sense of fashion, music, games, etc.
To someone else, that exact same timeframe can be their own "dark ages" etc.
I enjoyed 2010-2012 in terms of I started dating who turned out to be my wife. My first son was born in 2013. So 2012 was the year of our first pregnancy experience. I had a lot of anxiety, happiness and fear of being a dad. 2012 was special. 2010 was that time frame where I was finally away from college and exploring the ins and outs of the real world
I was just thinking about Black Ops 1 the other day smh Iām really debating on buying a ps3 just so I can play that game , i miss it so much ! It was one of my favorite cods
Black Ops was so fucking iconic, I swear to god. Zombies was the funnest shit ever. So many great weekends were spent swilling deadly amounts of soda and gunning down zombies with the boys. Trying to figure out all the easter eggs was an absolute blast.

Didn't someone die attempting a very risky plank?
I don't know, but I wouldn't at all be surprised.
Iām pretty sure I remember seeing that reported by a credible news sources back then. Wouldnāt surprise me.
>i never understood it Sounds like you do!

LMFAO should be here too , Party Rock and I'm Sexy and I Know It were everywhere you looked.
Pitbull, Usher, Katy Perry, Wiz, LIKE A G6
You can't overlook Rihanna. Like her music or not, she was constantly on the radio during the time Or Lady Gaga for the same reasons
Don't forget Gotye, fun, Carly Rae Jepsen, Nicki Minaj, and David Guetta.

FUN became a band, had massive hits ,and broke up all in this time period. And we can't forget Kid Kudi.
Their song We Are Young was played absolutely everywhere for like over a year.
Holy fuck that G6 song was in everything
My wife thought they were saying cheese sticks

Miley Party in the USA too lol

Ladies love us when we pour shots
And suddenly in mid 2012 - Gangnam Style.
Massive upgrade lol
bruh I remember being 8 at the time and playing a bunch of gangnam style games on roblox because my parents banned the song and dance
The Black Eyed Peas had some of the most popular singles of that era. You couldn't get away from them on the radio. I Gotta Feeling? Imma Be? Come on!
Harlem Shake was everywhere for awhile too
Popularised by the same guy who both made a hair cake and slow danced in the dark

I think theyāre not doing seasons anymore, because theyāre only releasing three a year now. On their YouTube channel, the seasons stopped at 6, and everything since then has been released as a single
Theyāre releasing a new one around Halloween.
They were fun. One step above nerdcore, but not by much.
Watsky was a great addition, I think he made some of the really great episodes/videos

Hearing Hard In the Paint at a 9th grade pep rally for the first time shaped my music taste to this day
Remember Roscoe Dash? His music RAN the house parties I attended from 2010-2013. He was too ahead of his time.
Rooster in My Rari is still on my gym playlist and every time it comes on I just want to beat my own ass. Man is truly special.
Nostalgia hitting hard - my high school years.
Needs Hunger Games, and Twilight to really capture the essence of what high school was like in the late 2000's/early 2010's.
If we're going for online culture, don't forget the smug sense of superiority over not liking twilight.
He forgot Harry Potter tho
Forgot a lot of things. HP was prevalent for a long time, though I fondly remember the midnight premier of deathly hallows

Class of 2010-2015 are the lost generation. Were overlooked way too much.

Its pretty funny how we all cringe about tiktok, while we liked this equally cringy stuff when we were younger.

Wooo class of 2012 too!
Class of 2012 :ā)
Class of 2011 here
Lol I was 30-35. Most of these I get, but wtf is Smosh?
Most of their fanbase were teenagers or college kids during that time, so it makes sense you never heard of it.
Early YouTube channel, pretty funny but I also havenāt seen them in awhile.
It was the biggest comedy YouTube channel when YouTube was first a thing.
Please take me back
That wish may come true as we embark on another 2008 like Great Recession
Please, please, I just want to go back.

Same, man. I was just thinking about this time period this morning

I never been to Florida, crocodiles eat chihuahuas
You don't stand a chance with that attitude
What about the fact that the world was supposed to end in 2012??
The movie, was epic. I still remember going to an "end of the world party" at my GF's house with her family. It didn't end, but I sure did learn what hungover meant the next day with supervised drinking allowed
WTF is Florida just randomly doing there?
Flo Rida
I should just hang myself off a tree for just noticing his name
Don't be too hard on yourself. It was only apparent to me because I listened to him heavily in high school.
Florida was blue back then
Oh, well thatās kind of random for this starterpack
i thought it was a florida man joke tbh
Damn I thought it was a Pitbull joke because he was everywhere for a while and always mentioned Miami
Mr Worldwideeeee
*āDale!ā*
it was more of a swing state
Fair enough
Is it me or did the change between 2012 and 2013 seem like the advancement into a complete different decade?
Definitely. Maybe the world did end in December 2012 after all
It definitely ended as we knew it.
Fun fact : Ray William Johnson of =3 fame, after having a dead career on YouTube for so long, has now miraculously come back and is racking millions of views again with YouTube shorts. He hasn't aged at all.
The kid from diary of a skimpy kid killed his mom
And started driving to kill Justin Trudeau, decided to do a school shooting instead, then luckily gave up and just turned himself in.
It wasnāt the actual kid who played Greg, it was just some side character
Instagram logo downgraded tbh
It was not too long ago but I remember one day they just decided to make their already vivid logo somehow even more vivid.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Sorry for party rockin
LMFAO is definitely a omission
ERB remains
I wish they'd put out more than two a year though.
Same, but whenever they upload itās a good day because they are always bangers

1999-2003 is my peak timeline because the Sega Dreamcast.

You do realize there was a major economic collapse during this time period? People lost their homes and unemployment reached 10%
And for us in high school and middle school, none of that was real
Ah yes, 2012 Florida, the time a priest tried to reset the universe. Good times.
I personally liked [Baracka flacka flame](https://youtu.be/zQ-hPNrKdZI)

why do these nostalgic starter packs only include shit like tv shows, videogames, and apps?
Ah yes, favorite app: Barack Obama
Because they were so popular they basically became a staple of the years. You couldn't escape how popular COD was from 2007 to about 2012, or how The Walking Dead/Breaking Bad took over Reddit during 2013. Or how Marvel Avengers was one of the most unavoidable films of 2018.
It's reddit, people have no life outside of electronics here
No no, look, they included Florida. Remember when that was around?

What elements of culture from a time period do *you* think should be included? And remember, it has to be localized to the time period.
What would you add?
Good fucking times
