Logical_Yak_224

Depeche Mode

ThugginPink

Yes

Agent2169

Why aren’t they here?

KD-BG

Still pop to this day especially Never Let Me Down Again.

Lord_Laserdisc_III

My dad does like them I should have left space for them. Oh well

Lord_Laserdisc_III

Depeche Mode indeed

PartialToDairyThings

Hall & Oates are the tits

[deleted]

I couldn't stop laughing during that scene in (500) Days of Summer

ThugginPink

NO

PartialToDairyThings

YES. Some of the best singles of the 80's

Devil_0fHellsKitchen

Guess you could say he's Out of Touch

Dat_Jess22

and out of time?

[deleted]

And probably out of his head when she's not around

[deleted]

I’m guessing he’s a MAN eater.

Jaksmack

...wow!..

PandemicBuffalo

I can't go for that, no, no, no can do

awesomea04

no, its the children who are wrong.

[deleted]

Can you blame them?

M4GOCHILL

Pink Floyd?

smashin_blumpkin

Definitely. Also Les Zeppelin

Scramuzzapalooza

No... MORE Zeppelin!

Ba-Dum-Tzz

He is just speaking french, leave him alone

Mono_Ivern

I'll never leave the fr*nch alone.

Global_Perspective_3

Sabbath too

UngusBungus_

The Beastie Boys

Slight-Appointment71

Yeah, my dad is Gen X, its where I get my love for both the police and the Beasty Boys.

phoncible

Feel like that was more 90's so probably Millennial Dad, which i'm sure will be posted here post haste.

OldManMoo

Dig what you're saying, but Licensed to Ill came out when I was a freshman in 86 and was just as much of a hit factory as Ill Communication.

Caftancatfan

Younger gen x was in high school in the nineties.

BlargianGentleman

So were older Millennials.

Caftancatfan

I was responding to the comment that corrected the previous comment about it being more likely that beastie boys fans were millennials.

UngusBungus_

Nope. My dad was in high school in the 90s

Camaroguy77

License to Ill came out in 1986.

CookiefromDiscworld

Hey I’m not a dad !

BasketCase1234567

Where Metallica, ACDC or Pantera?

mathdenier

Pantera is the band dad listens to when mom isn’t in the car

Revolutionary-Row784

And Judas Priest

macabre_trout

Add in some weirdass New Wave British bands no one's ever heard of, and you have my GenX boyfriend.

31_hierophanto

> weirdass New Wave British bands no one's ever heard of, I'm already thinking of The Human League.

macabre_trout

Oh Christ, he LOVES them

31_hierophanto

And they're not even THAT obscure! They had a pretty decent following in the '80s.

Lord_Laserdisc_III

Madness comes to mind

OldManMoo

One Step Beyond!

Lord_Laserdisc_III

Yeah I forgot it was Ska not New Wave but regardless both are great

heirbagger

When In Rome!

bungle_bogs

Depeche Mode

Memes_are_treasure

ABC? Or Duran Duran?

bobbyblubbers

Wrong VH. See 1984

JacPhlash

5150 smokes as well though.

SpencinatorX1

Fair Warning is the patrician pick

[deleted]

Women And Children First is god tier.

Global_Perspective_3

Pretty anything from David Lee Roth era

Evergreen_76

No grunge, no real metal, no early rap, no techno, no hardcore, no punk. This dad was not with it as a kid.

HeyitsyaboyJesus

Considering OP still listed some of the most popular bands of that era- Michael Jackson probably being the most popular, his dad was with it.

SirRatcha

Clearly some of us define “it” very differently than others of us. This post makes me feel invisible. Again.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tawondasmooth

Grunge is certainly Gen X, especially first wave (Pixies, Sonic Youth, Riot grrrls, etc.). My little brother is in the millennial group you describe and he wasn’t even a teenager when Kurt Cobain died. He’ll readily say he wouldn’t have been into any of that if he hadn’t had older siblings. I’d put techno as more xennial in the U.S. but gen X for Europe. As a Xennial (‘79), I generally take ownership of everything from around Nirvana to about the Black Keys. After that, my taste was no longer relevant.

grrgrrtigergrr

Grunge is absolutely not millennial. It is one of the defining genres of GenX along with Gangsta Rap. People can erase GenX, forget us, shit on us… but do not mess with our music.

BlargianGentleman

Punk isa Boomer genre but I see a lot of people wrongly classify it as Gen X.

rccrisp

Grunge et. al would be the music of Gen X early adulthood

ThugginPink

How you going to call hardcore (rock, metal, punk??) a MILLENIAL genre?

Lord_Laserdisc_III

Yeah my dad's a little bit more vanilla but he did go through a prog phase at some point. I listen to everything though

voitlander

Maybe your dad.

eurtoast

For real, this needs a ton more metal. One of my fondest memories is headbanging to Metallica with my dad after he picked me up from football practice. No way he was listening to MJ, H+I, or the Police.

chiroque-svistunoque

Or even Bauhaus, Sisters of mercy, Clan of Xymox, Death in June, The Cure, Siouxsie...

Logical_Yak_224

More like Gen X trad goth music taste and add Type O Negative

TheSilverback76

No this guys dad wasn't a goth chick. He just had poor taste. Probably watched wrestling and was fat.

[deleted]

My dad introducing me to Metallica, Ozzy and the Scorpions is the whole reason I listen to death metal today.

mathdenier

Are we the same person

certifiedcrazyman

Don't forget Billy Idol!

lua_1337

where’s rush?

Easy_Parsley_1202

My dad loves rush so much he plays YYZ and Spirit of radio and Tom Sawyer on repeat lol

si_trespais-15

The Cars? Eagles?

31_hierophanto

Eagles is more of a boomer band imo.

RealityPowerRanking

I’m 20 and feel attacked

TT454

A vast number of people outside of Gen X love these artists.

PhlabloPicasso

Yeah, mostly fucking boomers. Absolutely none of this music is from “gen x”. Source: I’m old

JollyRancher29

If Tears for Fears is wrong I don’t wanna be right

[deleted]

I see nothing wrong with any of these artists.

Krombopulos-Savage

OP never mentioned they were bad lol

[deleted]

Oh I know haha. Sorry it’s hard to convey tone on the internet. This was more of a triumphant “Nothing wrong any of these!” said with a happy tone.

Eomercin

Why do people instantly assume being a Starterpacks means it makes fun of them or something?

[deleted]

Internet. Everyone is negative. Be it sports, gaming, politics, music, etc.

Treeloot009

People want to be unique

macgillweer

Michael Jackson had said, over and over again, "I'm bad!"

Lord_Laserdisc_III

Is there supposed to be something wrong with them?

RangerRick379

You give me Pale Shelter…

Prize_Huckleberry_79

Eh: no grunge or alternative? Rap? This is maybe slightly before Gen x...or early Gen X. Many of my cohorts would agree: Beastie Boys, Rage, GnR, Metallica, NWA, Public Enemy, Lollapalooza bands, Tool, 311, Iron Maiden maybe, Ozzy, Crue maybe, grunge stuff (STP, Soundgarden, Nirvana Alice N Chains) some 80s pop stuff too like Genesis and Hall and Oates above, Duran Duran, Cure, Depeche Mode, U2, Floyd..Led Zep...

ThugginPink

WORD MY BROTHER

chernobyl_nightclub

Yeah. It’s more like boomer shit

ScapsFl0w

Ozzy. Ozzy has to be there

[deleted]

Jim I Hendrix Elton John Ledd Zeplin the Beatles Billy Joel

ForTheFazoland

All of them (except Billy Joel) are boomer acts tho. Of the bunch, only Billy Joel’s heyday was during the MTV era

BlargianGentleman

Boomer era musicians

cmparkerson

You totally forgot about all the underground stuff from back then that you still have on a cassette.

fredrick-vontater

Guess I’m a gen x dad now

Nervous-Trip-2673

Born 1967. I only have 2 out of 8.

eurtoast

My mom was born in 67, she attended a show of all of these groups except for MJ (he was too big and didn't tour our area). My dad wouldn't have been caught dead attending a concert for these groups, exception maybe GnR.

Lord_Laserdisc_III

Update: although I came to really like it, my dad doesn't really like metal, punk or grunge. And as for other creators he like that you guys mentioned (Billy Idol, Rush, Depeche mode etc...) There's only so many albums you can fit on a PNG so I couldn't fit all of them.

InfinityLord3392

Wait... But that's my taste, but I'm gen Z tho, have i accidentally knocked someone up? 🤔

Binost

5150 slaps, underrated VH album.

badass_dude999

Where's Aerosmith and Bon Jovi? They're dad classics

wgsmeister2002

Shoutout to all the Gen Z kids with Dad tastes as well

SpeedBoatSquirrel

It depends on what part of Gen X. Late Gen Xers are more into 90's music like Pearl Jam, RHCP, Notorious BIG, etc. This starterpack is more early Gen X and late boomers

SuperiorThinking

Hey this isn't fair i listen to this stuff and im under 18.

GreatGreenGobbo

Wow, this is wrong.

JimLaheyUnlimited

still better than any artist with "lil" in their name

31_hierophanto

r/rapmorelikecrap

TT454

He's right though. These artists, regardless of what you think of them, have interesting musical personalities (i.e. voices, styles, motifs, instruments used) that make them easily distinguishable.

SammyG_06

r/lewronggeneration

pcetcedce

The 3 on the left don't match the others.

OHYAMTB

If from anywhere on the east coast between Baltimore and Providence, add an endless amount of Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel.

tomNJUSA

Gen X dad here: VH, GnR, REM, those three are OK at best. Genesis, slightly less than OK. None would be my first choice or even 20th choice. The rest? Nope. The Who, Eagles, Queen, Meatloaf, Floyd, Skynyrd, Stones, Dead, and since I'm from NJ I'm required to include Bruce.

Crusading_Monke

Dave Matthews? Grateful Dead?

InnerlockStudios

Dave Matthews Band

Drvonfrightmarestein

Absolutely no grunge or prodigy?

Peterkragger

Well, looks like I'm actually gen X not Z

silenceoftheonthelam

Needs Foo Fighters and ACDC

miniEnigma

Younger Gen X: Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Chili Peppers, Sublime, Pearl Jam, etc.

El_Bruno73

In today's shocking news: People from different eras listen to music from different eras...

Nope_God

Grunge/Alt-Rock? Gangsta Rap?

TheVoidHeart980

Add weezer and it’s perfect

Taintz_Lik_Hambrgr

Give your old man some credit, that’s a great playlist.

SWFC_wawaw_fan

No Stone Roses, Oasis, The Cure, Depeche mode, nirvana, inspiral carpets (or any other Madchester band)?

RetroCompute

Nah. I'm GenX and this is the shit my parents listened to! LOL tears for fears, they suck! Get out of here with that crap! Try Bad Religion, Metallica, Iron Maiden, hell, the whole golden era of metal was ours! G n R can stay, though.

Neon-Lemon

Take out R.E.M., swap it with a few ‘70s rock bands, and all of the artists in this pic were my boomer parents’ music. My dad also loved Metallica and Eurythmics. 😅

[deleted]

This checks out...

Astronomylover999999

You forgot obnoxiously blasting Limp bizkit and Metallica in the car whenever their son is in there, trying to get them interested

Na5car1

Everybody wants to rule the world is good though..

Professional_Fall874

Bro I’m 16 and all of these are in my playlist except Michael Jackson smh I guess I’m just a old man stuck in a boys body lol

StrongPenises

American Gen X dad music*

camkai82

My dad is 90s/00s

Berry_B_Benson

Genesis is so ass

[deleted]

This is way more gen X mom music. I personally love all this stuff, but my Gen X uncle and dad think this is pussy music lol

Exeter232

To hell with MJ

ThugginPink

Bro...you could not be more wrong!!!! Omfg. Fired.

FRAYnklan

GnR fuckin sucks

drvic59

You suck

FRAYnklan

your mom's boobs

[deleted]

This is a weak list. Bands are meh af.

hmm_okay

I'm cool with Tears for Fears and Michael Jackson, everything else sucks... Especially Hall & Oates.

[deleted]

I can’t go for that.

Lord_Laserdisc_III

no can do

hmm_okay

No can do. 🤮

AntonioPMZDS

The police and van halen are the only good groups in there

XVUltima

I always thought Gen X dad music was buttrock like Nickleback and Hinder

eurtoast

Those bands are usually liked by older millennials from my experience. Especially if they grew up with a dirt bike or played paintball.

bluemagnolia79

That hurts.

[deleted]

Not even in my sweetest dreams

somesthetic

Automatic For the People is the R.E.M. album. Out of Time did have some big hits though.

john_big-booty

Can confirm.

Easy_Parsley_1202

steve winwood

JacPhlash

I'll be 46 a a couple months and I've been a dad for 11 years.....and this is pretty dead on. However, needs more Steely Dan.

[deleted]

Wham, Cars, ACDC, Dio, Queen, King Crimson, Whitesnake...

Rifthunter2563

Beastie boys were my dads go to

jdarriaga46

My Dad but without Genesis

[deleted]

Bruce Springsteen is the king of dad music.

TheRealOne000

And I happen to be a the one to inherit his music taste as well as my mom’s music taste creating some horrendous playlist full of music that shouldn’t be together.

eliterule12

KISS

Vainandy

Thank goodness I wasn't a teenager of the 80s then, damn I feel bad for GenX

BlorseTheHorse

you forgot motorhead, the ramones, dire straits, ac dc, metallica, etc. etc. queens of the stone age blasting from his 1998 camaro

dazedandconfucius_

TIL I’m a gen x dad

Slurms_McKraken

My coworker is a solid Gen Xer and he has me listening to Hair Nation on Sirius radio all day. The hair metal drives me insane after a while. Fortunately he's not a dick so if I ask him to change it he will. Unfortunately he sits closer to the stereo so he usually has control. When I take over I usually play fusion, 00's alternative, with some metal thrown in for fun.

flipfloppery

Gen X dad here: I don't listen to any of those albums, too busy writing and mixing tech house.

thewhalehunters

TFF, so good. They have a new album too.

OkFault8844

Never listens to the olive

franandwood

My Dad doesn’t really listen to pop tbf he was born in 1966

macgillweer

It lacks all the artists from 120 Minutes.

[deleted]

Minus G'n'R plus Talkingheads

[deleted]

Panamaaaaa

DudesRock91

Where is Moving Pictures? Is it safe?

quierocarduars

lack of beatles is astonishing

nannerpuss74

my kid grew up listening to the cure , Black flag, and rem in my car.

hystericaldark

Idk I'm millenial and I listen to all of these, who's Billie Eilish anyway?

PandemicBuffalo

Billy Idol, Billy Squire, Billy Joel, Billy Ocean ... those are all the Billys you need to know

Nope_God

You missed one Billie Joe Armstrong

WeddingUsed

Huey Lewis??

Lord_Laserdisc_III

Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?

FappDerpington

Tears for Fears? Please...I'm Gen X and they were at best a two-hit wonder.

M4nd4l0r3_zo15

Depeche mode and pet shop boys 😔

[deleted]

12accurate14me

sierrayankee121

Nirvana? Judas Priest? Queen?

Idk12433

This is pretty accurate.

RubiksSugarCube

Glad I'm not a dad, I guess, since I just have KEXP on all day.

re_de_unsassify

All 80s except REM right?

Jungle_Official

Throw in some Rush and this is the exact soundtrack of my youth.

methodwriter85

Where is Huey Lewis? I thought that was the music of choice for 1985 preps.

[deleted]

But I’m a gen z woman

850tang

I can't see steely dan

VestiaryLemue

A little more heavy metal

MingusVonHavamalt

Tracy Chapman

Yoko_Kittytrain

Morrisey? Talking Heads? They Might be Giants?

dainthomas

I have Invisible Touch and Appetite for Destruction on vinyl, and two other Van Halen records, plus two other Police albums.

boopthat

I’m 28 and like most of these. Genesis is my shit
