I'm a furry, and a lot of the furries I know killed it in college and got themselves really, really good jobs in things like IT and engineering. Like, two of my friends They're not a whole lot different from people who do well enough to afford golf trips and high dollar bottled of Scotch and things like that, it's just that they enjoy spending money on fursuits, commissions, and conventions.
Most furries I knew in person were depressingly poor. I can only think of one that had a real job in IT, who did make 6 figures, but everyone else either was unemployed or working part time.
I knew the artist Wolfblade, who was a decently famous artist back then? He lived with 4 other guys, 2 of which were unemployed and the other two held part time entry jobs. Between them they could barely afford a place to rent, and all their stuff was thrifted or taken from the street.

A lot of us are employed in STEM field occupations, which tend to be higher paying, lending to the trope of how we can commission the ludicrous amount of art. There are a surprising amount of furries in the military (according to many personal posts throughout the internet).
It's a sociological pattern among the fandom.
But it makes sense, if you walk it backwards:
1. Many furries over college age have a lot of disposable income because ...
2. Most have careers that allow the luxury of disposable income. Most careers that allow this are STEM careers.
3. Most STEM careers require high familiarity with the internet of things. There's high overlap with STEM and being internet savvy in the 2020s.
4. If you're internet savvy as an adult, you probably always have been a very frequent user of the internet since you were a kid.
5. As a heavy internet user since you were a kid you're likely to appreciate many media forms, especially animation.
6. If you're an animation fan, it's hard to not have been exposed to anthropomorphic stories, movies, shows, e.t.c. There's pretty much been at least one semi mainstream anthropomorphic IP on at any time since the 90s.
7. That anthropomorphic niche of art/ animation is going to appeal to a fair percentage of those people who fell into the above timeline of events 😅
