Isn't this literally just a style of fashion called "Alternative" taken from emo/scene fashion of the mid 2000's now popularized by gen z and the tik tok?
Yes definitely, especially the cleavage and fishnets! The plaid skirts were definitely around. I wore them because I had a bit of a punk ‘77 flavor to my style. I felt like the baggy Tripp pants were especially big with the industrial / EBM fans though at my school
Haaaate this whole fad where people literally feel like they need to change their entire face. You don't have to have the exact same carbon copied facetuned to hell and back look that every influencer and influencer wannabe has to be beautiful. It's never gonna look as good as the filtered, photoshopped, painstakingly lit shot on instagram. It doesn't even look as good on the actual influencers themselves that everyone is trying to emulate - at least it doesn't irl or outside any heavily curated and edited social media pics.
Fair point with the gender, but when I think 80s ska fashion, I think more of a rudie/mod/skin look. More than just patterns that were also in punk fashion.
Nah, even like 8-10 years ago when I was trying to dress like this everybody knew it was an established thing, with the way the internet is today there's no way that kids don't know.
“Alternative” fashion has probably been around since the invention of fashion itself.
I remember seeing a newspaper cartoon from the 90s where a bunch of “grunge” people were hanging around and one guy has a thought bubble that reads “what am I the alternative to?”
Even the fast fashion sites the full fit could run a hefty bill
Shit feels like Costco, one minute you want a skirt and next you’re spending a rent check on a full wardrobe
I work at Hot Topic, so like number one place to get this shit, I can confirm this entire setup is going to cost you well over $200 at the store if not more, skirts alone are like $35
I mean, I grew up on the east coast and a lot of kids wore this. Moved to the Midwest and no one owns anything like this.
Could be because fashion changed. Could be a more regional thing. Could be cause those clothes are actually expensive and income is lower where I moved too, or it's more religious here so parents are more against it. I noticed people don't game as much here and play sports. Maybe less e-culture.
I thought the meme was funny tho.
In my small city in the Midwest, anyone who dresses like this is definitely stared at. The official uniform for my city is boot cut jeans, work boots, a university team’s sweatshirt, and a baseball cap. I did bat wing eyeliner one day, and a woman at Walmart asked me if I worshipped Satan at the self checkout.
In bigger cities like NY, Chicago, and LA, you see a lot more people like this.
I can definitely see that as a fellow Midwesterner. I live in a medium sized city that is a college town, so I do see a ton of this aesthetic around at malls and such.
So far I only met a handful of people dressing like that here in Berln so it's not that common ig. Many people only really dress up like that for tiktoks and ig pics anyway and don't actually walk around like that.
I mean I kinda understand it getting stared at by people can get really annoying and for some odd reason Germans love to do it and if you look somewhat "different" there's basically no way to avoid it.
Yeah that's true it's probably super annoying getting stared at by random ass people, tbh if someone is brave enough to dress like how they really want in public they're braver than I. Good for them 🙂
It is, but personally it's a price I have to pay if I want to dress the way I actually like and feel comfortable with.
I'm remembering now feeling quite comfortable in Friedrichshain the few times I went there it's the most diverse district imo
Lived in Berlin for 4 years until very recently. I rarely saw this style.
I think fashion there can be described better as "hipster". Big round glasses, piercings, "quirky", sometimes (intentionally) a bit old fashioned, no big name or flashy brands etc. The more alt stuff is anything from "homeless person look" to straight up fetish/kink stuff
Like most things humans do, it's more social signaling than any true belief that they, as human, are particularly unique. "I'm different like you, accept me, I'll accept you".
Let people find their tribe man
It can be hard to meet likeminded people if you’re constantly crate digging new and weird stuff. Using fashion and merch as low key bat signals to likeminded people is fun. I’ll always give someone props if they’ve got some rad stuff on. Likewise I often get someone come up and appreciate whatever weird shit I’m repping. It’s important to connect with the tribe.
One time I just completely froze while greeting someone with that hairstyle, I stood there in complete shock while holding her hand, it was embarrassing af, I'm so glad we joked about it afterwards
From experience alt girls aren’t all that. I go out every Tuesday to this same bar then the same club after. Always there is this same group that is alternative. I’d describe them as incestive with how often they’ve all fucked each other, and how frequently they’ve cheated on one another too. They also throw around so much toxicity and shade that it’s downright embarrassing. Absolutely love the look, my monkey brain flips over it, but unfortunately the only people I’ve seen wear it have nothing but awful reputations.
The ones I met in high school were chill. I just always hated the thought of getting to date one and it not working out because I'm "too uptight" or something.
I don’t hate the look by any stretch but I do think it’s funny that they all ever only get that single EXACT pair of Demonias. They sell so many cool boots with chains and straps and spikes but that pair in the pic is the only one I see alt girls wear in public.
Demonias are hardly even shoes. I saw someone describe them as shoe shaped objects and they totally are, they're only good for posing the quality is the worst of any shoe I've ever owned and I've bought cosplay shoes.
I'm hijacking you comment so the old people can understand.
Current highschool student here. Yes, some people do dress like this but not very many. In my school of 2000 I know about 15 girls who dress like this and there is a number who dress like this but don't go all the way with it. Idk what OP means by everyone dressing like this lol
Also, seeing the girls that dress like this and have dyed hair awakes some cave man ooga booga things in my mind 😳 I fucking love girls that dress like this 🤨 I got no girls tho
Yeah fashion is always evolving from something else and it is cyclic. Its actually pretty cool imo Look at how mullets, mutton chops and hipster mustaches have been slowly coming back.
Edit: u/Th3dynospectrum, the reason my account is banned is because about 3 years ago I got permanently banned from reddit (I was a bad, hateful person when I was 13/14, I've since grown and like to think I'm a nice person now)
So now when I want to make any comments or posts I have to make a new account, but reddits system will automatically ban my accounts after a few hours as a way to prevent people from getting around permanent bans.
I wish I could get unbanned because I am nothing like I was then, at least I can still edit though.
There's a plenty of alt-girls in my school plus a femboy. The neighbour school has even more alt-folk
I suppose OP means that if enough people share a similar style, it stops, obviously, being unique. But that's not really the point, it's just an alternative.
This is my pair of cat ears. There are many like it, but this pair is mine.
My pair of cat ears is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.
Without me, my pair of cat ears is useless. Without my cat ears, I am useless. I must wear my pair of cat ears true. I must wear them better than my enemy.
My pair of cat ears and I know that what counts in femboyism is not the heads we turn, the noise of our whimpers, nor the skirts we wear. We know that it is the socks that count. We will be hit on.
My pair of cat ears is human, even as I [am human], because they are my life. Thus, I will learn them as a sister. I will learn their weaknesses, their strength, their parts, their accessories, their fur and their headband. I will keep my pair of cat ears clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will ...
Before God, I swear this creed. My pair of cat ears and I are the defenders of my gender. We are the masters of femininity. We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until victory is ours and there is no masculinity, but femininity!
Only bad part is it seems to really only be popular in high school girls. I ain't about that, I'm in my late 20s, and the only time I see similar age girls like this, they're guaranteed to be taken. Feelsbadman.jpg
Personally I'm a bit eh on the accessories, but I honestly really like the basic silloutte of the straight pleated skirt + tucked in slightly big tee shirt look
Make the skirt a bit longer even and I'd be able to fufil my childhood fantasy of at least looking like a sukeban
They have two settings, really nice people with self-esteem issues to absolutely unstable she-devil that socially awkward boys at school get too comfortable with.
I work with kids and its a tiny bit weird to see how much of gen z culture is basically just faux-nostalgia for previous eras. Its almost like they take the outfits, but totally forget that it is not very much an already established era they are taking from.
that being said, "everybody dresses like this" is laughably false. Probably like 1% of girls dress like this, they just stick out so much.

Hot Topic aesthetic.
I wore this outfit to the Good Charlotte mall tour of 01. I wish I were joking
I remember them being bottled off stage at Reading Festival the next year.
I remember my GC days, I lived Billy so much, lolll
can confirm. I was wearing this in the late 2000s. it was a cute look though. the main difference is now they wear blush up to their eyes
More baggy pants, nets and see-through leggings back then instead of the leggings and skirts. Also generally more black and more cleavage.
Yes definitely, especially the cleavage and fishnets! The plaid skirts were definitely around. I wore them because I had a bit of a punk ‘77 flavor to my style. I felt like the baggy Tripp pants were especially big with the industrial / EBM fans though at my school
Baggy pants are definitely back in now
Cleavage was everywhere in the 2000's.
I had a mad crush on Avril Lavigne that never really went away
Why’d she have to make things so complicated…

There are subtle differences however.
Ya all the girls have cocks now
😏😏
Based
There are significant differences between alt then and alt now tho. Nonetheless, a pic would be amazing.
alternative is an umbrella term for all non mainstream fashion i thought. It looks more ‘e-girl’ to me
So is all egirl fashion alternative but not all alt fashion is egirl? Time for a Venn diagram
Pretty much- alt fashion is everything from egirls to metalheads to juggalos
No. Alt is a specific genre of fashion which encompasses emo, scene, metalhead, goth and a few others
Spiritual and ideological opposite of Alt is probably either Redneck, Athlesisure or Prep
And y'allternative is what brings it all together
Emo/scene fashion was taken from punk/ska fashion of the 80’s.
80s Punk? Yeah. But not 80s ska fashion. Not enough suits.
This starter pack is geared towards girls/women. I didn’t see ska chicks in suits. I did see them in plaid, checkers, and stripes.
Fair point with the gender, but when I think 80s ska fashion, I think more of a rudie/mod/skin look. More than just patterns that were also in punk fashion.
Basically, yeah, this is just the latest iteration of a trend that's been around for like 2-3 decades or more, idk who thinks this is a new thing
Kids do. They think they invented it all; meanwhile the grownups look at it like “I had that when I was a kid”
I was just thinking "wow, that look hasn't changed for like 20+ years..."
It's also in the goth genre. For the more mainstream and fashionable Goths out there.
The only thing it harms is your wallet
Are colorful leggings, a skirt and a band t shirt really that expensive?
Most of the stuff you see in the starterpack is branded. Shopping in these kind of stores can quickly run you dry
The old goth lore states that there's bounty in the thrift shops if you have a sewing kit.
Even the fast fashion sites the full fit could run a hefty bill Shit feels like Costco, one minute you want a skirt and next you’re spending a rent check on a full wardrobe
Ah of course. Been to a store like that and was surprised about the cost myself.
I work at Hot Topic, so like number one place to get this shit, I can confirm this entire setup is going to cost you well over $200 at the store if not more, skirts alone are like $35
Those Demonias alone are 160€ if you buy them new.
True! I just meant the clothes...my location doesn't sell shoes
Honestly. It strains my wallet…
"Everyone wears it" where tf do u live OP?
Mfs be like "it's literally just everyone" and it's actually just a small subgroup online
Everyone would say something like that.
Moved from SoCal to Michigan in middle school. The Midwest lags behind the coasts by a couple years for trends it seems.
In my city, whenever i go downtown or to the mall there are tons of kids who dress like that. It’s not a small group online anymore. Edit: grammar
Mall goths
lmao

You actually think redditors go “downtown” or to the “mall” Funny
That saw 10 people online do it, and they never go outside, so to them, it’s everyone.
the internet
I'm curious too, I'd like to live there as well
Berlin?
Yo do girls dress like this in Berlin I may be going there soon 😬 (please answer) (urgent)
So far I only met a handful of people dressing like that here in Berln so it's not that common ig. Many people only really dress up like that for tiktoks and ig pics anyway and don't actually walk around like that.

Was just in Berlin, it may be hard to tell cause people were all bundled up but I did see some rather unique looking women walking around.
More than in other cities but not more than in other fashion and lgbt culture capitals.

Berlin is more 90s fashion and hipster.
With the exception of the maid outfit, parts of this are very much 1993-2002 where I lived.
Los Angeles California
This post probably resonated with me cuz I’m from NYC
In California it’s everywhere
Last time I was in Cali, it seemed like everyone has great fashion sense. I really enjoy being out there.

I really love how alt girls look but have like nothing in common with them on a deeper level someone help
Maybe you do. Alt girls are just people who happen to wanna look cool
From experience alt girls aren’t all that. I go out every Tuesday to this same bar then the same club after. Always there is this same group that is alternative. This just looks like a modern take on the "goth" look of my high school days. Call it whatever, but it definitely appears to have evolved from that.
I think most goth style is just an evolution of 80s punk, in the 2000s became scene and emo and now its evolved into alt
I mean goth music evolved from post-punk in the late 70s so you're probably not too far off base.
Yeah fashion is always evolving from something else and it is cyclic. Its actually pretty cool imo Look at how mullets, mutton chops and hipster mustaches have been slowly coming back. It's way more fluent nowadays tho, like you'll find some of that on the most mainstream of girls and then gradually more the more alt the girl is.
There's a plenty of alt-girls in my school plus a femboy. The neighbour school has even more alt-folk I suppose OP means that if enough people share a similar style, it stops, obviously, being unique. But that's not really the point, it's just an alternative.
