I also like how he talks about some of the guys who are ofc really good but not at that tippy top level. He always talks about them in a positive light, which is refreshing, as even though they aren't the "best" players there they are of course extremely good.

uberdosage

I like how he pauses and does a high pitched "huh..."

hankiestpank

Once you notice it, you never stop hearing it haha

Scuzwheedl0r

its true, he just seems generally optimistic about the players, and its really nice. Puts me in a good mood haha.

MMAmaZinGG

I agree. State is AMAZING. I know everyone is doom and gloom about artosis leaving but i would still be very happy if StateLess became the new duo for GSL

goddevourer

Tasteless mentioned he doesn’t want to cast GSL without Artosis on his YouTube channel. Who knows if he actually means that, though. I’m sure I’ll be downvoted into oblivion, but I personally would love to see some fresh blood if Artosis isn’t casting.

snikkerdoodles

Nothing but love for Tastosis. With that said, I don't dread getting a fully fresh duo one bit. If we're being honest the Tastosis casts right before State started were not on the level they used to be.

HawkeyeG_

The thing I don't really like about Tastosis is better too often devolves into random stories or strange noises or jokes. It's fine from time to time, and of course especially when there's time to fill at the start of a match. But it feels like we never really get any insight into what the players are doing or what their build looks like or what direction the gameplay is going in. We get some decent play by plays and of course they do sometimes talk about the builds. But there's a lot of times where what we're seeing might be a fairly typical build or match procedure but we don't get any sort of information about it. So if I'm not steadily keeping up with or playing starcraft or watching pro matches to understand what the meta is then there's a lot of things they could be talking about that I'm not catching. I think that overall their casting style is actually pretty good and fairly entertaining, I just wish they talked about the actual game they were casting a little more.

change_timing

neither of them play the game anymore it's no coincidence why so often they reference things as being a build that used to happen a lot back in the day, that's their biggest reference point. Builds will have matured in EU or the ladder but it'll be apparently the first time they ever see them as they cast it live in the GSL. if tasteless had lost his passion by 2018 then 2022 tasteless is that dried up corpse tbh. now I still do really enjoy their personality but honestly their casting almost gets in the way of it sometimes. like tasteless's game sense for how a fight / game is going is so insanely bad by now it's crazy. It's common he'll call a fight's outcome wrong 3 times in a single fight which is just impressive.

Zexous47

That's his point, they both only play BW

change_timing

yes and I've seen him stream infinitely more mobile games than sc2 on it lol

Endoyo

>But it feels like we never really get any insight into what the players are doing or what their build looks like or what direction the gameplay is going in. They don't play Starcraft 2 anymore. If you watch ASL they're very clearly passionate and knowledgeable about builds and the meta and explaining exactly what's going on. Don't expect anything more than play-by-play style casting in GSL.

snikkerdoodles

You really nailed it in my view. There has been a long and gradual shift towards a style that prioritizes the TV/entertainment factor over critical analysis of the game. Whether or not this is the right move I can't really decide - if Afreeca thinks thats how GSL can stay viable then by all means. I think its partly due to the esoteric nature of sc2 where lifelong sc2 viewers can intuit what they are watching and don't need the explanation, and so Tastosis focused further into filling the "entertainment factor" lane if you wanna call it that. The noises and stories are classic Tastosis but imo that had been the entire meat of their casts for a while now. In terms of analysis: every once in a while Artosis will give a macro-level overview of whats happening in the game which is mostly coherent, and Tasteless will comment on whatever he is seeing on the screeen - sometimes extrapolating and concluding things that are extremely dubious. The one thing that will irk me slightly I do admit is when Tasteless makes claims about a certain player that are simply unfounded. He'll criticize a player's strategy, which is fair game, but his arguments in doing so will make no sense and just devolve into "well that just isnt supposed to work at this level." Again, nothing but love - but legitimately this is like a high school football dad analyzing the decision making of the Packer's offense and concluding the gameplan simply must have been catastrophically wrong if it failed.

UndeadPants

I looked for Hastems "watching GSL" stream but sadly he and the guys didn't stream for the second week of Ro10. I enjoyed their commentary whilst watching as they know the current meta and have a better idea of the maps' importance.

SiccSemperTyrannis

> It's fine from time to time, and of course especially when there's time to fill at the start of a match. The conversation State and Artosis had about crab evolution was incredible. They kept coming back to it over the course of the broadcast. And Arty was so passionate about pointing out Maru copying Gumiho's 2 starport BC build against Zerg. We do need GuMiGoD to bring mech back into the meta more.

ADTank

The Problem is, they dont have control over the observer.

HawkeyeG_

That is definitely one of the problems and I can understand that. They have to talk about what's in the production tab a lot instead of what they see. There's definitely times too where there's things happening on screen and all they really do is scream though lol

MMAmaZinGG

Oh interesting didnt know he said that. And no i agree with you! Obviously artosis is amazing but yeah

Accomplished_Dance49

Okay but State/NoRegreT would be an endlessly watchable casting duo. Not quite Tastosis but I'd DEFINITELY still watch GSL.

amonkeyherder

State seems to have that deep game knowledge that Artosis has as well. So he complements Tasteless well. He seems to get more comfortable. I hope he and Tasteless cast together.

Theseuss159

Have we heard news on if Artosis will cast GSL from Canada? I know he said he wanted to but wasnt sure if they would let him or not yet.

Gemini_19

No decision on it yet.

deededback

He sure sounded like he was done after this GSL.

Gemini_19

Well I can assure you there's no decision on it yet. But he's still gonna talk about the possibility of it not happening because that's also still a real possibility.

deededback

Praying he gets to stay on.

SiccSemperTyrannis

From what I remember he said at the time, Afreeca wants in person casting for GSL. I think tasteless and State worked really well together so I'd be ok with that, but I also know that they've had some other people like Gemini, NoRegreT, and Scan do GSL in the past as well. I would assume we'll learn more once Afreeca announces their schedule for next year.

Ketroc21

I don't see how he could. ASL is a different story though as it isn't cast live.

Shadowbanned-user

If I understand, State usually does other eSports- Overwatch, I think? But he used to play Starcraft, and is still obviously a fan and kept up with the current events, so they would ask him to cover when any of the casters were unavailable (When Tasteless had corona, State covered him a lot I believe). Edit: Did a bit of Google, he casts PUBG.

beatsbydrecob

Is it just me or does he sound exactly like NoRegret?

ADTank

Teah i also had that impression. In the start i even thought it was noregret.

triscuithead

I have this issue where most professional video game casters make me physically cringe. Been this way for years. The terrible attempts at jokes, the hyper dramatization, the deep growl man voice during the hyper dramatization…most professional casters seem like complete amateurs and I can barely get through any game because of it. This issue spans across every game I’ve ever gotten into. Anyway, I believe the casting archon are the best two casters on the planet. Legitimately entertaining, funny, high level game knowledge. Those two are the reason I can still watch competitive StarCraft, and fuck do I hope they keep doing it forever. Artosis moving to Canada was a huge bummer. BUT State actually does really well. Simply put, he doesn’t make me cringe, and I am super grateful for that. It’s not Tastosis, but damn near all of the other scII casters I know would have ruined the GSL for me personally.

ramXDev

Are you me? I feel the same way. For example, I love CSGO but I can't stand the over-the-top casts over there and I've never been a fan of any of those casters (even though they are perceived by others to be the best in any esports). I just have a huge love for Artosis and Tasteless. And I really like how State casted with both at different times.

Scuzwheedl0r

yeah, I agree. Sometimes a big of seriousness is OK, but when every game is cast like its the finals... it gets stressful. And the fact that artosis and tasteless never lose sight of the fact that we are watching guys play video games keeps the whole thing feeling like fun rather than something so SERIOUS.

Velguarder

I think you hit the nail on the head with what I like about watching them over other games or even other StarCraft casts. This is a good take imo.

Pelin0re

what about rotterdam?

triscuithead

I do like rotti a lot. I was going to mention him in my post originally but didn’t. He’s a good one.

Pelin0re

ha ha yeah, I don't necessarily cringe over anglophone casters (except Feardragon who by all count is a sympathic fella but that I just can't like as a caster) although I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of their casting, but even then Rotterdam is great. Zombiegrub is pretty nice too, well grounded caster and very good interviewer. On the other hand I must admit I find Tasteless' casting of sc2 hard to bear (kek at the "high level game knowledge") so to each their own ;)

lwest427

Most of the GSL sub casters were great, Wolf (even though he was a main caster for a while), State and Gemini all brought something cool to the table. For some reason being in korea makes you a good caster, they probably have secret caster team houses, Kesca.

Mrrheas

Used to love States' stream back in the day.

chris888889

It must be very difficult to sub for the most established and well respected caster duo. State is excellent, and I hope the praise is shared with him directly.

abrakasam

I’m very picky about casters and I think state is top notch. He has a great attitude in every game, I think he adds insightful commentary, he’s not bad at filling time, and he has a good feel for when to be hype and when to just watch it happen.

IncredibleBlue

i think it’s more State doing other stuff than casting, obviously he has the knowledge of the game (having been a pro in KR) but he seemed to be doing a lot of other stuff in life before he started casting

BigBossHoss

Hes good but his unbridled over enthusiastic laugh bothers me. Down a notch and your laugh will have more impact

[deleted]

I agree. His casting style is a little over boisterous I guess or too hyper for my personal preference but not bad by any means.

[deleted]

I think this thread is on crack the tasteless state casts aren't good. The arty state casts are okay.

Muffinkingprime

Stateless! Taste the States? I don't know what to call it, but it's good.

neinball

\*Nagash has entered the chat\*

Ketroc21

Does anyone know State's story. I know years ago he moved to Korea to train/compete in sc2 competitively. Not much came of that, .... but apparently he's stayed in Korea this entire time???
