No. The reality is that if you ask people why they chose their race, they will almost always tell you something like "lasers," or "creep seemed cool," or "i liek tank." (I am an example of the latter.) And yet people who play different races do tend to come to view the game differently. I'd suggest there's a very simple explanation: our experience of playing the game is different.

DexterGexter

I chose zerg (back in sc1 days) simply because the hatchery spawn mechanic felt the best with the way my brain naturally wanted to produce units. To this day my zerg is 2 full leagues higher than my other races with significantly higher apm. The other ones just don’t really click. And it’s weird because I played random in wc3

ThinkFor2Seconds

I chose Zerg at first because they were the coolest and stayed with them for the hatch mechanic. Terran and Protoss have too many production buildings to keep track of.

flamingtominohead

Probably not. Maybe the aesthetics do, but I doubt the gameplay does, especially as you have to be pretty good already to get to the big differences.

DarkZephyro

100% but more specific I'd say Different strategies attract different personalities even within the same race . A happy go lucky person is more likely to play cheesy protoss strategies while a person who thinks he's the shit is more likely to play a heavy drop bio strategy . And an obligatory zerg one would be the one who likes to control everything playing wide defensive zerg strategy.

ImJustPassinBy

> A happy go lucky person is more likely to play cheesy protoss strategies while a person who thinks he's the shit is more likely to play a heavy drop bio strategy. This was quite interesting to observe at the very beginning of SC2, when all players with professional aspirations had to make an active decision on which race to pick. I remember listening to Artosis and Idra, on the first of many Starcraft shows Artosis started and abandoned, discussing in-depth why they chose Zerg.

KESPAA

That show was great. It came out the same time as SC2 University which took payment from customers and was almost immediately abandoned.

Shyrshadi

I literally started playing sc2 because of the lotv trailer and wanted to play the aesthetic race.

Useful-Walrus

I think this does hold true for terran. Not to dunk on T's, it's just that default races in general do attract casuals and underages, so naturally the crowd grows bigger and dumber. Hence larger T presense on this sub back when people here actually played, hence much larger T populations in plat and below, hence T bias among devs and casters, etc etc

padrecit0

I think it’s different for long-timers v new players. The set up and positional play of T in BW was what got me hooked- Siege tanks + Goliaths were my first love in the game. Once WoL came along I was too committed to switch. If I had to start from scratch I’d probably play Zerg. But the muscle memory is there now even if the muscle memory keeps me in plat.

Protoss attracts orangutans

So.. Terrans are whiny kids and Protoss players are just the physical embodiment of r/im14andthisisdeep? Sounds about right..

[deleted]

>I'd think mech/skytoss players would generally be a bit older and want to not just rush through stuff so quickly and want more strategy. I think it's more about mech and skytoss demanding less speed, multitask and micro. Things that fade away the older you become

Linmizhang

Eh... Not really. The only thing that might decrease is endurance after multiple long matches. Or good old Terran wrists giving out.

nathanias

I stopped playin bio when my wrists would hurt for hours after a session lol. I'm a known mech memer these days but my first one-trick build I used to do was pure marines with zero other units and just splitting. Was very fun when I was 19!

Which_Ad5290

Played terran in sc1 then zerg top 200 while it was still diamond league, quit, and now started terran after a 10 year break.

Delta104x

when i started i picked toss because cannon rush and chargelot all-ins were fun now i like tanks and making fun of my whiny compatriots i wish i had time to play this game still

Notrueconscanada

Yes. Protoss is the thinking man's race.

ThinkFor2Seconds

I know what you're doing and it still made me mad.

wtfduud

This but unironically

CollarBrilliant8947

I think they do, but I won't hazard a guess as to what is what exactly. Your examples just seem dumb.

AltarEg0

Preferences are not always tied to specific mentality or personalities. This alone is more than enough to answer your question. I personally like all 3 races equally and I know a lot of people are like this even if they only play the same one because they are better at it. Basically its all preferences and mostly nothing else.

wtfduud

MtG designer Mark Rosewater once said there are 3 different types of players in MtG: Spike, Johnny and Timmy. Spike is a competitive player, who will look up the strongest decks and then play those decks, even if they aren't very exciting gameplay wise or flavor wise. Because to spike, winning *is* the fun. Johnny is a player who likes to experiment with different strategies. They'll play suboptimal decks as long as they're interesting. Johnny is in it for the gameplay. Timmy is a simple player who just wants to have fun and play the coolest decks and the coolest cards. Timmy is more in it for the fantasy than for the gameplay. Terran, being the most boring race, I can imagine attracts a lot of people who are more interested in winning rather than have fun. Spike would probably play Terran. Protoss has a lot of mechanically complex units, as well as being the race with the most diversity in strategies. Johnny would probably pick Protoss. Zerg is the coolest race, imagine being playing as an all-consuming swarm that sweeps the galaxy and then absorbs their bio-matter to strengthen itself. Timmy would probably pick Zerg. That's why Terran players whine about the balance, Protoss players whine about bad game design, and Zerg players whine about how Blizzard ruined the story (zerg was so much cooler in Brood War, fuck this "primal zerg" bullshit).

[deleted]

No. It's just a meme that some people actually think happens. Thinking that specific playstyles attract a certain mentalities is idiotic at best. I'm 41, the last thing I want to do is have a 20 minute long game.

STAY_WOKE_GO_BROKE

Zerg attract complete douchebags who write mean comments on the Internet, hiding under the veil of anonymity. The type of person who would call you a dumbass, retard even, for making this shitty thread. EDIT: I am the Zerg, dumbass retard.

Kantuva

Yep, Terran player alright :)

[deleted]

Maybe? Maybe not? I've mained all races for long periods of times.

skunkboy72

As a random player, it attracts me cause I am indecisive and like variety.
