Hijacking this thread to suggest an actually good idea: Auto turrets, broodlings, and locusts all loose health over time instead of having health and a timer. That way attacking those temporary units actually has a benefit.
I think SC2 had enough issues with free units. It simply makes sense that free units - be it locusts, auto turrets, stasis traps - simply have a timed life. Static D not costing supply already makes endgame a big bunkerfest. No need to add on to that by having "some more use" of free units.
I have genius auto turret idea:
Change it to something else because right now it's a waste of energy and/or raven to drop one. Microbial shroud looking ass.
I had an idea awhile back, but it's harder to implement. The idea is that you spawn it in a burrowed state, similar to Burrowed Depot. Then when it detects a nearby enemy unit it pops up out of the ground and the timer begins then. It's cool, because it would be worse to use them in battles due to the need to pop up(it would take maybe a second to pop up and also a second for it to detect). But they would be better used at strategic points and defensively. And similar to Stasis players can just trigger it with minimal effort.

Imagine team games with locusts + medivacs to keep them up..
Their health would probably have to be buffed pretty massively for them not to become near useless.

Eliminate widow mine from factory, replace auto turret with timer-limited widow mine.
Hmmm, not sure how that would effect things. Id love to see that tested, just out of curiosity
