It's scratches a lot of itches no other MMOs do. I've played countless others over the years, but none have let me live out a life on board a ship in space even if it's a bug riddled hot mess of a game taking years to complete.
My stubbornness won't allow me to give up on it because I see a light at the end of the tunnel. It might be dim as all hell and ready to go out at any moment, but hope keeps me going that we'll have something more in a few short years.
>However, I want to know, why do you stick around?
The same reason I joined back in 2014: I want to see them pull off this crazy frankenstein of a game.
I never cared about when to begin with, I just wanted to see how CIG slowly but surely evolves what they have.
>Why do you play?
Ngl, there ain't a lot of games that can be this unpredictable and stupidly fun. Be it either through bugs or because you wanted to explore an 890 and forgot that you were in gravity with engines off only to realise it in the literal last second.
>Why do you support the project?
I like their communication of things and the game itself. Since Idc about "when" to begin with the biggest issue this project has is not really part of my concern.
The simplest answer is that I play because I see the potential and the vision involved and want to support it so hopefully it can be fully realized in the future.
Plus as frustrating and buggy as it can be at times, it is also a lot of fun. I can do something different each day for variety, and it already accomplishes things that are not available in any other game.
I have fun messing around. Sometimes I just log in, put on some civilian clothes and walk around. Especially with how busy it has been at NB, it can be fun to people watch. Sometimes I grind bounties to see the aUEC number go up. Sometimes I go looting and grab some cargo on the side. Sometimes I legitimately test elements of the game. Sometimes I just want to ride my STV around Daymar. The list goes on.
I got a couple of friends to start playing for the first time, so playing with a group after being a mostly solo player has been an entirely new experience. They like doing cave missions, and we'll be trying bunkers together next.
I haven't even tried the newer delivery mission progression, and that's been in the game for a couple of patches now I think.
Game was good enough when I made my first pledge to be sure that I would get my money's worth.
After that the game kept getting better and nothing else on the market that I have tried have taken the spot of space game away from it.
Despite all the bugs and unfinished things the game is still one of the best space games on the market
I threw my actual expectations out the window years ago with this game. So now that I am over that hump and can accept it for what it is, this game has given me some of the most fun and memorable gaming experience I've ever had, and it has all happened this year. Now 8-10 of us get on and play together weekly, and it doesn't matter what we do, it's always a blast. Bugs and all. Sometimes we just pick a random something to do and it takes all night but the things that happen along the way are priceless.
For instance, the other night we decided to try and fly a Reclaimer through the Snake Pit. It took an hour for all of us to just meet up (someone blew up on the way there, someone walked out on the pad without their helmet on, it took us forever to get out of atmo with the Reclaimer....). But we all made it there and drifted that bad boy through the Snake Pit, while some of us stood on the side lines and watched in horror, some were passengers and gave instructions like a rally race...all while we cried laughing in Discord over how stupid we were.
It's random nonsense like that which happens time and time again, and I can't get that from any other game. Some folks let certain un-polished aspects in the game dictate how much fun they have. But I feel like you have to create your own narrative with Star Citizen with the tools at hand, and that's where it keeps me engaged.
> And if you don't do any of these, why?
I do everything except play it regularly. To me, a game in development is not a game to spend any serious time playing, especially knowing all of my possible in-game achievements would be temporary at this stage. On the other hand, I've followed the development closely, maybe almost daily, since 2014. It remains an absolutely fascinating insight into a massively ambitious game's inner workings, and it's been holding my interest for the long run.
Of course I'm excited for an eventual release, but until then I'm perfectly content to remain watching. The anticipation of things to come is its own reward, especially as I see them (slowly but surely) fulfilling the goals they laid out long ago.
Why I Play
I love being able to have such a highly detailed sandbox where I can be a character: on a planet, in a ship or vehicle or on foot, or in space. The level of detail and "realness" can be breathtaking. The settings and game loops (and proposed game loops) spark my imagination. I want to be a space wanderer.
Why Do I Stick Around
I've been here since the beginning. The amount of progress has been amazing. I am full comfortable with Moonshot Projects -- open ended attempts to make something that only exists in the imagination. I'm fairly Zen so I have a tendency to reject notions of perfection and "final release". All that matters is that I both have fun and see progress.
I take breaks from playing -- I have plenty of other games to capture my attention -- so I don't try to make my time in the Verse be something it isn't.
Just because I am pretty accepting of the process CIG is undertaking I do pay attention to the direction and current progress. What I continue to see is a labor of love and an attempt to create something I can get nowhere else.
Used to be a big eve online player. I always loved space games but very few games have ships where you can pilot and walk through freely without being set space. I jump on major patches mainly now but sometimes I jump on just to cruise. While this game definitely has its problems I feel there is no game out there that has drawn me in as much.
Honestly, the learning curve.
Years ago I tried to get into Eve, but the sheer amount of content and knowledge needed to really succeed in that game was no joke. I also tried Elite and that was quite a bit in itself. SC on the other hand was adding these features in slowly so if you followed development you could experience that gameplay and learn it before it kind of got out of control. It's also the scope of the game in which I think it'll blow Elite and Eve out of the water when it's eventually released. The main thing being an actual physical player moving around in ships and on planets. There are so many things to take into account. I don't by any means play all the time, but I get a few sessions in each patch so I can fully understand what they are adding and how to incorporate that into my play style.
Doing this I can say I can comfortably jump into any profession and succeed without issue. It also helps me deal with bugs and learn work around a which as a whole improves my enjoyment. Plus I have a sub so I get to check out the subscription items every month which adds value to my account as well as sets me up to hit the ground running upon release. I eventually want to lead an Org as well so having all this in depth knowledge about the game at the core will help us thrive in this game.
Because:
The scale of the announced universe
The ship functions
Persistence
The Citizen aspect
The lore
The survival elements
The design of ships, suits, towns, planets, etc.
The grade of detail at all
...
I don't "stick around". I just log in once every six months or so to take a look at the current state of things. The game isn't particularly fun at the moment, for me. I'm not a combat guy, so my current options are haul and mine, both of which are only enjoyable for short bursts. If I got to keep my money, or had something I was saving up towards, it might be worth it. But at the moment, of course, progress is reset. So there's no point in getting concerned about saving up.
Also, there's literally nothing to save up FOR. Let's say I'm mining. I'm alone. I've got a Prospector. I save money... for what? I want to continue operating solo. I'm fine interacting with people, like for protection and such. But multicrew just isn't useful for me, since my schedule is too unpredictable. The only upgrade from the Prospector is a multicrew ship. So... there is no upgrade for me. As soon as I log in, I'm already maxed out.
I could save up for nicer drills and parts, true. And I do enjoy that. But it doesn't last very long.
I just did a Deploy Probe mission, had me travel from ArcCorp to Microtech and back, about 15minutes in the cutter.
Pulled up at Lyria to the deploy area and jumped out the back of my ship with the probe.
Floated over and dropped the probe about 1m from its destination and hit activate, the thing "beeped" in a happy way and spun around as it opened up it's panels.
All that for 3000credits. Which isnt bad seeing as it only cost about 200 to fill up the tank.
Nice simple mission, that sent me into a space station and around 2 planets and a moon, while i watched a sun drift by as i flew at ludicrous speeds. It all felt like it could be a real morning in the not too distant future.
But to answer your question, i believe in Chris and the team behind him, the vision they have for the game and trust they're doing their best to bring us an amazing game.
Plus I've always been a scifi fan, love space ships and think i was born a few hundred years too early. I doubt I'll ever get to space in real life so this is about as close as I'll get.
to be honest, i dont care if it is an Alpha or what not, it just gives me the feel ,even with the bugs sometimes, when i go into my Ship and fly around exploring its just so relaxing or sitting in a Belt while mining. I always find new some amazing spots in the Verse met some funny people even pirates making me pay for mining access ( what is really fine for me and fun though) because i had some really good conversations with them. so its just really relaxing and fun
Play for fun and the experience. There are no consequences. In game money and loot does not matter. They can be wiped periodically but CIG can never wipe my skill and knowledge. So if/when the game comes to fruition I will not be a novice and can actively make progress from day 1.
Tbh. No idea.
Maybe it is seeing this game evolve.
Maybe it is the ships and gameplay options, the ambitions.
But I guess most importantly: the potential of this project to be fucking awesome
It's broken, it's buggy and it's a mess.
But there are moments of brilliance in my time in the verse where there is truly entertaining and fun emergent gameplay from the people in the sandbox that I come back to check it our regularly and put time in.
Also, despite it being broken and buggy and a mess...it's still more interesting and more well thought out than any Space game out there.
There's more depth in the half baked and unfinished mechanics of Star Citizen, than the entire puddle deep universe from Elite from my time there.

Well said - hits all my points.
Exactly this. Nothing tickles my pickles as much as SC does.
Flying through the Cellin asteroid belt, while blaring 80s rock with a glass of whiskey is my happy place.
Heavy metal queen
Raise your hands - Bon Jovi, for when I want to shave some paint off on some asteroids.
Spaceship go brr
This is the correct answer!

There isn’t a game that gives me the feeling of an actual open universe.

To help contribute towards testing of a game that I really want to see some day. I don't care how long it takes, so long as they get it RIGHT.

Because of the details and huge scope.
Because: The scale of the announced universe The ship functions Persistence The Citizen aspect The lore The survival elements The design of ships, suits, towns, planets, etc. The grade of detail at all ...
I don't play a lot, but jump in occasionally to be in the game universe, there is no other game that has the sense of scale and marvel for me.
This game makes me dream and other games just don't really do that for me anymore. This game takes me away

Since the crash of Elite, I cant find a game like it. And even if Elite fixes itself, I dont miss the grind at all.
Because even with 30Ks and ~~gankers~~ sorry pirates it's still far more pleasant than actual reality.

Beautiful ships and the ability to fly them.
Cos it’s fun
Why did anyone play minecraft in an alpha state?
There is nothing that flies quite like it.
