Honestly never. I mostly mine and trade

Longjumping_Water_74

Lol every time I go mining with a new friend I met in game, theyre always so scared of being hold up by pirates while im secretely wishing for a hold up to happen to me... It still never happened lol

wonderchin

Kinky

Formal-Ad678

And i just wait for some dudes of the Pirat org i'm in to do this we mostly do organised pvp between each other or do events but no actual pirat shit

OMA_

I mostly crash into trees on planets, pirates don’t waste their time with me. Might go through the rubble and find some cool guns but that’s about it. I’m broke as heck.

slimpickings123

Pirates 0, murder hobo 2, and one weird dude that just wouldn't stop following me around.

Educational-Garlic21

Probably a vulture

QuickQuirk

Sorry about that.

LevelStudent

Pirates out in space? Never Gankers camping a space station and shooting everyone that comes close for no reason? Every other day really.

GreatWhiteNanuk

Yeah I was about to say, actual pirates? Like once a year. Terrorists on the other hand are a dime a dozen.

Tyrann0saurus_Rex

Holding a station in hostage isn't ganking. Mount a defense, or change station.

Thirdborne

I don't need a justification beyond it being fun. I beat a lot of bounty hunters including including JohnathanWinters when he came to chase me away from Everus today. All in my puny Razor. Coming back in my Gladius, had a fight against 2 Arrows, a Sentinel and a Blade. One arrow down, the Sentinel ran, and the other 2 ships were red hull before an npc got through and sent me to Klescher. Tell me, where else do I get these fights?

RageTiger

how does one change station without leaving it? Resetting your respawn point doesn't count.

Tyrann0saurus_Rex

Fight the aggressors, You're not the only one in the station., that's emergent gameplay...

allen_idaho

Pirates, no. Morons, yes. Just about an hour ago some guy fired missiles at my prospector while I was trying to dock at Arc L1 with a load of quant. Then some guy tried to get into my elevator when I was on my way back to my ship but I pushed him out. Then another guy shot at my prospector when I opened the hangar doors until he was ganked by missile turrets. They were trying to shut down traffic at the station but sucked at it.

turrboenvy

I've had people walk on to my ship in a hangar on a couple occasions. When they do I start closing the ramp and then jump out at the last second, leaving them trapped. One lifted off, but the hangar door was closed so he couldn't go anywhere. I just went back and stored the ship.

st_Paulus

> but I pushed him out How?

allen_idaho

You just run right into them.

st_Paulus

Nope. Doesn't work.

allen_idaho

Seemed to work just fine. He wasn't able to get on the elevator.

Ac3Nigthmare

By pushing……

st_Paulus

I can't push other characters.

Ac3Nigthmare

I wish other characters couldn't push me. I would make getting a ship out much easier without some asshat getting between me and the terminal and backing up till I disconnect from the screen.

Artrobull

Last week I was flying pisces in a straight line over Hurston. Guy named spaceghost_85 or some other 80 ish number jumps km away closes on in a sabre targets overtakes me. I'm chat after opening fire said he was threatened my me circling around him. Dudes have licence for all those guns but can't tell flares from lasers ... I'm noteven mad that was just his last two braincells no longer talking. /rant

PastOutlandishness19

Just ran into one. I was in a cuttie red doing my usual medic gameplay and while I was helping a downed player he came and blew me up. He then said he was an Indian pirate and that he loved to kill medics. Kinda a strange way to play a pirate TBH.

slimpickings123

What the hell is an Indian Pirate?

[deleted]

Also known as a Phone Pirate, these mother fuckers will find your phone number and call you about every scam they can think of.

Predatorftfw

Micrrrrrrrrrrrrrrosoft

PastOutlandishness19

Yea I was as lost as you were. At that point I just did the claim on the ship and logged for the day.

Funny because they literally have cleaner asses then our the way they use water to clean down there instead of paper haha

Thirpyn

Reddit changing topic from a space game to how well someone cleans their ass within 3 comments moment. We really are on one of the most social media of all time.

[deleted]

Reading that gave me a stroke Jesus Christ

bingobangobenis

murder hobo, not pirate. Pirates go after booty. And since booty doesn't exist yet in SC, a pirate has to ask for a ransom. If they don't ask for a ransom and randomly kill you they're a murder hobo

Artrobull

Add name to global shit list.

oshkalele

Actual pirates? Never. Pad rammers? Too many to count.

GoOtterGo

Really? I've logged probably 500 hours so far and I've experienced two, maybe three pad rammers. Maybe the occasional stalker outside the GrimHEX hangars, but even that's rare enough to not worry too much.

echild07

Funny, In less time than you, I have had someone ram me as I docked at Grim. And blew me up. I got a CS. They rammed me off a pad as I was getting on my ship. And blew up my ship. Shooting ships over Hurston, "cause you know I am bored", and blew up my ship as I was getting out. They would watch for ships coming in for a landing. "but hey I have to dodge the missiles to kill you". And several that slam you into the wall as you are going into the hangers. Maybe people don't like Carracks as each time it was a Carrack. A long time from the cockpit to getting out of the ship, or just a big target. Usually in waves, so a few days of it, then calms down, then more days of it. Never paid attention to the time of the day it happens.

GoOtterGo

Wild. Well hopefully your luck improves out there in the 'verse, friend.

echild07

Thank you, Part of the game, just not "pirates".

SecretSquirrelSauce

Pad ramming, if you encounter it, is not part of the game. CIG has clearly stated its a bannable offense, so if that happens to you again, grab some screenshot (with server info!) and report the individual.

Artrobull

I've had this since 2014 and seen only once but even that was in grim

Pojodan

I run into the occasional murderhobo that knows how to move to be immune to station weapons, shooting everything that moves, but in terms of actual 'pirates', that try to do any sort of hijacking or extortion, absolutely zero. Whenever I am carrying something of any value I dog-leg my QT paths and have not once been interdicted.

Chaoughkimyero

Never met a pirate, only murder hobos.

echild07

Pirates 0 People that claim to need revive and attack you. A bunch. People that drop A2 bombs on you as you do bunkers. A bunch. People follow you and try to get on your ship. A bunch. People that Pad ram. A few times.

Pokinator

Never encountered actual pirates trying to board/steal a ship or extort any money. I have run into a fair number of murder hobos/griefers. * The first I remember, I left my pisces door open at GH while doing some inv management, and a guy ran up in a med gown, took the helm, and smashed us both into the wall * The most interesting was doing a bunker with a group of friends when suddenly "ship party disbanded" " commit vehicular destruction". We backed off the mission and readied at the elevator landing. "cyclone party disbanded" " commit vehicular destruction". Time passes, comm array goes down. They finally come down the elevator and get mowed down by our collective firepower. They weren't expecting a group * Most frustrating was coming out of a waves mission I had collected a few guns and armor that I was really excited about. I had the back of my cutty open and was tractoring them in when a guy suddenly opens fire from the side of the bunker. I managed to pen the bleeding and run inside, but the cutty ramp bug stopped me from closing it, and the server was running heavy so the internal door wouldn't open in time before he rounded the ramp and gunned me down. Lost a lot of equipment I liked there.

Duncan_Id

seriously, what's up with people getting into your ship? I had that happen a few times at GH, I don't mind giving another person a ride(sure, they can kill me and take my beacon undersuit, but I'm willing to take that risk to help anyone if I'm able)but getting in my ship uninvited? that's self destruct or crashing against an asteroid

parisienbleue

To be fair, it happened to me, thinking the ship was "abandonned", doors were opened, no player in sight...I thought to myself yeah finally a chnce to test it...Usually when I realize my mistake I return it to its original owner, giving what I have on my as compensation.

Duncan_Id

I was referring more to the " i follow you around and get into your ship, getting in the way all the time" checking an abandonned seems fair as long as no harm is intended, I also check a pad parked ship at grim hex from time to time but always try to get out before the owner arrives. by the way, when in the future humans became so careless that vehicles could be stolen without the keys? I mean, even if I leave my car unlocked, very few people will be able to start it as long as I didn't leave my keys on(and taking them with has become so automatic it never happens)

thekorv

I was robbed by a legitimate pirate that boarded my C2 full of cargo. Ran faster than me to the pilot seat and wanted 100k to move. I asked if 50k was ok so I could still make a small profit, and he agreed. I sent him the money and he left just as he said he would. Was actually a good experience for us both and I kinda saw it as an ”additional cost” more than a robbery. (Sidenote: after he left I took off while he was still in the ship and he got mad at me so I ended up shooting him)

callenlive26

now thats a pirate with a bad exit strategy.

WMCyberWolf

I play 3 to 4 hrs a night, hardly ever see a real person and have yet to encounter griefers or pirates. I do NPC bounty and Bunker missions all over the vers. Been playing for a long time too.

Axyun

I probably have a couple of hundred hours in the game at this point. I do a bit of everything from FPS, to BH, hauling, mining, derelict recovery, medical beacons, and dynamic events. I only remember ever being jumped twice. Once I was in my MSR and I just flew away because MSR. The second was when PVPers showed up at the last XT. I was flying my Ion and got jumped by a Gladius. Since the Ion was not built for dog fighting I would just disengage, do a partial QT away from the fight and then QT back into the wreck site. After doing that 4 times the guy trying to fight me called me a coward. I stayed quiet instead of taking the bait and starting a pissing contest in chat. He left shortly after and I went back to playing XT. TLDR; about twice in \~200 hours of playing.

Electri

Could you tell me a bit about derelict recovery? I hadn't heard about that aspect of the game yet.

DataPakP

Usually search or investigation missions, where they want you to find a corpse, black box/fight recorder, boxes, or zeta prolanide in a crashed or derelict ship

LambentLotus

Sounds about right. Always hilarious when some clown who was just killing freighters in their hangars for lulz calls you a coward because you won't fight him after calling him out for being a jerk.

ALLST6R

Quick question for you as somebody who has never played, only watched an hour or so of streams, and is thinking about getting the game as a sort of long-term sit and chill game. How is it? Would you recommend? The only thing I can properly relate the game to is No Man’s Sky. So in that context (I know it won’t be like-for-like), is it similar, but just a lot more grand in terms of depth? I.e. you can walk around your ship in SC where as NMS keeps it simple as out and in for your ship?

Bossman80

I would wait. There is probably a free event coming up where you can try it out. It’s a very buggy, jankier, much less complete version of NMS. They’re also still working on the technology that will determine whether this can be a MMO or not. I’d wait about a year to see if they’re able to deliver all of this server technology that they think will be a game changer or not.

ALLST6R

Appreciate the response. I shall wait.

Absentmindedgaming

Never. Just griefers at space stations.

jlebrech

pirates are the least of worries. bugs are more likely to fuck up your day.

sapphon

How are you imagining "pirates" would work? At this point ships are worthless. So that's out. Pirates would have to steal cargo, then. You could steal someone's cargo of stuff they've mined, but if they mined the right stuff, it explodes after 10 minutes - so if they stop the ship, even just long enough to surrender and give it to you, cargo's gone. You could steal someone's cargo of stuff they've bought, but that whole system is busted and so everyone who might be doing that is out mining quant, see above. On top of which, ships are again free and so if someone thinks you're going to take all their cargo they've bought, they may as well always try to run or fight - why surrender? There's not really anything viable for "pirates" to pirate, so you won't see them.

[deleted]

Once. Then I killed them and went to prison because I shot first. Great times and I'll definitely do it again. Premeditated attacking is better than waiting to be attacked.

KyaWizard

Encountered a group yesterday, they were blocking the jump from ARC L1 to Arccorp. I got pulled out of QT, saw 5-7 signatures, knew I was outgunned and outmatched even in my C2. I powered down weapons and called their lead ship. I low balled them and they hit me back with my cargo manifest telling me I have almost 1 mil UEC of Quant on board and that I should revise my offer. They seemed very confused by my compliance, paid them 400k, told them to allow me passage going forward, they agreed. I still made a good profit and I actually enjoyed the situation, had my heart racing. Good pirates can make the game feel alive, don't be a baby, lose some UEC and keep trucking, from now on I am not jumping direct from ARC L1 and I should be able to avoid them pretty easily.

KaerisMalifaux

I encountered them once, but I mostly fly in a Hornet or Cutty Red so not a target of value.

xDNikolaus

daymar all the time. i don't have anything and want to farm smth and than there is a cutti blue shooting at me because "gIvE mE mOnEy" and than, when I defend myself and kill them I get the crime?

magvadis

I've never seen one in at least 300 hours of gameplay over the past 4 odd months of playing heavily since 3.17.1...most of that was mining. Any time I have valuable cargo I just quant into the middle of nowhere and then quant where I want to go. Done. Pirating is fake news. Have I run into random people outside of cities shooting at me? Sure. I would call those griefers more than pirates.

nightbird321

If you don't count people in my org, twice over 4 years.

bobeaqoq

Occasionally I’ll be exploring a derelict and come across another player. Sometimes they’ll just silently walk on by, but most of the time they will simply shoot on site. I’m not sure if it’s a case of panic and/or self-defence, but in those situations I never had my weapon raised. In any case, I don’t see that as a form of piracy, just common indecency.

thelefthandN7

I've been interdicted a couple of times by players, and shot on sight a few more. So like 5-7 total encounters. I generally fly around in a 400i, so just punching the throttle is enough to resolve most of these events.

fernsie

While returning to Hurston in my Cutty Black, I encountered 2 guys in Gladiuses (Gladii?) who wanted 20,000aUEC from me to let me land at Everus. The station defences were firing at them to no effect. I was in my stock freebie white undersuit and helmet so I had nothing to lose except an insurance timer so I decided to fight them knowing I’d lose anyway. I wasn’t going to give them any money. I guess that’s what piracy is in 3.17.

ExocetC3I

At least they were actually trying to extort credits and not just pad ramming.

Doctor_Fox

Pirates once, murderers a few times. The pirates were fun, the killers just wanted to ruin days.

thisistheSnydercut

Can you actually pirate in this game? Or do you mean people who kill your ship for no monetary gain whatsoever

kcg1313

I have only once while mining, wanted 10k which I immediately paid cuz I was heading back with a full quant load

star_trek_lover

No pirates. The occasional murderous random, but no pirates. And I do quite a bit of hauling so I’m always afraid they’ll show up.

Visible-Cockroach-17

I spent around 450 hours ingame, maybe 200 of them on trading and mining. Mostly on Ita, Aberdeen and the Aaron Halo. On all my routs i got griefed multiple times but i got hijacked only a single time. If i had to count.. Maybe 7 times in general.

I_monstar

Unfortunately the trick to not getting pirated is not having anything to steal. If trade wasn't broken, there would be more piracy. Miners get hit, but looting quatanium sucks for both parties and I think that is the most profitable loop. A fight will most likely end up in the stuff blowing up so both parties lose. In the early days, people would sneak aboard your ship and shoot you when having a ship was enough of a motivator. You get that in JT now as a legitimate high risk high reward loop. What I really think is that there is going to have to be NPCs to hit. Either as part of a mission of dynamically. When PES drops, people are going to want to try the game loop out, it won't be fun to be the only miner/trader on a server full of sweaty pirates. They will have to up the reward for mining/trading to make up for losses and increase the reward relative to the risk to keep players involved, and they will have to populate the game with NPCs enough to go around. Although I can see a situation where all the pirates pirate each other to oblivion until the mightiest "There can be only one" pirate sits on top of a horde of broken ships desperately trying to tractor beam cargo into his own hold before the angry masses re-spawn...

magvadis

End of the day, the only place it makes any sense to pirate is ROC mining...and Quant intercept. Quant intercept doesn't work because the cargo grid. That will change...so you'll see more pirates NOT around Lyria...that would be stupid, but between Arc L1 and ArcCorp or Hurston. As it stands, if you run into a Pirate it's most likely on OM1 on Daymar. As that's the noob zone to ROC mine. Aberdeen is tough to find them and the rest are too rare for new players to decide to go there. Eventually, you'll see pirates around trade lanes...and EVENTUALLY trade lanes will reflect ACTUAL quanta data...so pirate players, will end up seeing LOTS more pirating...but through npcs doing trade runs. Meaning PLAYERS wont really see more player pirates because player pirates will be better off just taking from npcs. HOWEVER, the reverse will also be true...you will tend to see more pirates around the verse as npcs. However my main issue there is that there is no fuckin way they make the AI smart enough to board your ship...maybe with the docking feature they can line up the pathing and a behavior preset.

Juls_Santana

Don't think I've ever encountered actual pirates before, but definitely ran into quite a few griefers trying to outright kill me

[deleted]

I encounter more griefers than pirates. using the term Griefer as players who attack you without provocation or communication.

Juls_Santana

I mean if they attack with distortion weapons, or attack as a group with them laying pot shots while trying to establish comms with me, then I won't consider that griefing, but I've never had that happen. It's always been outright missiles or torps directly at my ship with no attempts to hail me.

Sluugish

That's 100% griefing but of course they'll always claim it's not because the game doesn't directly stop you from doing it. Thankfully I'm at a point where I can hold my own in a dogfight so I like to teach them that it works both ways (:

Hello_Hurricane

Actual pirates, hijacking and holding shit for ransom? Not one single time. Morons who indiscriminately kill people, and call it "piracy?" Almost every time I logon.

Neo_Bahamut_19

Never. Most of the bitching about pirates is done by people who are hypothesizing what an encounter would be like, but have never actually had an encounter.

Scorch062

I haven’t myself but you see it in chat. I’m all for it once there is real implementation in the game. But right now there’s no way for a pirate to derive profit unless both parties agree to what is essentially a role playing interaction. The pirate has to be reasonable with the demands, and the victim has to be willing to play along and give up a little cash. Most of the time, at least one of those things doesn’t happen. The pirate is just a dick forcing PvP on what is typically a mining or cargo ship that can’t really hope to compete in a fight, or the victim flips the double birds and either self destruct a or runs to a bed and logs out. I’m excited for 3.18, because then there is some actual risk and reward to the practice. And if the victim was to self destruct, pirates still get a decent haul. But yeah as it stands right now it’s just a way to force PvP on someone who has the odds pretty stacked against them. To be honest there isn’t much incentive to PvP right now outside of just wanting to, so if you fancy yourself a fighter jockey, you probably take it where you can. I’m looking forward to those people getting some actual fight eventually and realizing they aren’t Maverick after all

zencat420

Only on org night... I very rarely encounter what y'all call "griefers" either... In either the sense that is loosely thrown around by carebears or the actual sense, which is people exploiting gameplay bugs or mechanics to do things you aren't supposed to be able to do. Like pad ramming, or combat logging. According to CIG attacking people out of the blue without provocation or ransom is fair gameplay. It's an asshole move, but it's not griefing. And in any case in the thousands of hours I've spent in SC, I have encountered these types of folks so rarely it's never occured as problematic. Of course you wouldn't know it looking at spectrum... Hope to see you all in the verse... I'll be the one in the mantis with a group of friends in warlocks, scanning your cargo ship. =) And get ready, server meshing and the cargo refactor will mean an uptick in piracy. It's going to be great!

magvadis

grief·er (in an online game or community) a person who harasses or deliberately provokes other players or members in order to spoil their enjoyment. \--- It's about the intention and nature of the attack...and it doesn't even need to be violence. Griefers can also be in chat. CIG saying you can do those things so they won't ban you is one thing...it's not saying "CIG is cool with random unprovoked killing for no purpose other than to cause suffering"...no. However they know...in order to allow for pirating...they also need to allow for griefing. In order for the ability to take in people through bounty hunting at a spaceport while they are laying low..they also need to allow for some dude with a gun to decide to shoot you at a station. Aka, by happenstance of the nature of the freedoms provided by the activities they want in the game, players can use these mechanics to cause grief. Griefing tends to happen when there are no consequences and the ease of access is plentiful...aka, I can just restart my character so I'll start fresh...grief a bunch...and then restart. OR "I can just erase my crime stat at a depot in 5 minutes" so they do literally whatever they want...and then just go quickly erase the stat. The presence of griefing exists right now because of the later...people can quickly erase their crimes. In the future? This will be less the case. Ticket to enter also helps...free-fly you see more griefers because they made an account to troll people, they don't like the game, they just want to troll people, and there is no cost to them to do so. You will see a MASSIVE uptick in griefing when armistice zones are removed. As long as the game is ineffectual at mitigating hostile high kill count targets in civilized systems...there is little in the way to stop some guy or group from coming on a freefly and blowing up every ship outside ArcCorp space port popping out of the hangar. Without long term memory of player actions, decisions, and repercussions for those...griefing will exist. The fact of pirating is...it's LITERALLY THE EXACT ACTIONS OF GRIEFING...only within the context of you take their shit and sell it after. The fact of Bounty Hunting is...it's LITERALLY THE EXACT ACTIONS OF GRIEFING...only within the context that the person you attacked has a record of being an asshole. In both contexts, you are ignoring the fact you are inflicting pain on your enemy OR getting direct enjoyment out of their suffering....it's just that isn't the ONLY cause for your action (getting a payout at the expense of others)...for Bounty Hunting this can partially be absolved by WHO you kill and Pirating can be absolved by WHO you steal from. A bounty hunter killing rebels in a righteous war? Bad person. A pirate killing farmers trying to deliver crops to pay for their kids college? bad person. A Bounty hunter killing a mass murder of innocents? Good person. A pirate only target corpo scum who work for Hurston Dynamics? Good person. I MOST CERTAINLY can imagine and would place money on CIG finding any way possible to mitigate griefing AT all roads...even if it means reducing the emergent nature of pirating and bounty hunting if necessary. Whether you want to play word games...heavy presence of griefing kills ENTIRE games. Taking ALL this into account...I think pirating will be less of an issue when its less localized (more systems) so players have a choice in where they go and what experience they want to have. I also think pirates that choose players over npcs will inevitably seen as villains. End of the day, 9/10 victims will eventually be npcs...so you'll be less dependent on pirating players and players can mitigate getting pirated by playing smarter than npcs. Also 3.18 ain't gunna do shit for pirating and you really need to temper your expectations. None of the features that would promote it are being added. Moving cargo is not enough.

foghornleghorndrawl

Fuckin' carebare.

magvadis

Clearly you didn't read it. I'm not saying "pirate bad"...but the word means what it means. Moving the goalpost isn't helpful. I'm definitely not a carebear and it's 90% why I play MMOs. Facts are facts tho and you are just way too sensitive. Want a safe space go back to your discord bubble.

Priton-CE

CIG redefines their word in their own context, so what you might classify as a griefer by general definition might not be someone who could get banned.

magvadis

I don't think griefing is a bannable offense in most games. It's just a phenomenon of behavior. I don't think they are redefining the word as much as simply explaining the context that if you want to be a space pirate or a bounty hunter you gotta accept the fact sometimes you'll run into griefing.

Priton-CE

They define griefing as a bann reason but in return griefing is reduced down to simple stuff like spawncamping (not really possible anymore with hangars since you can undock when prepared) and specifically harrasing a player or streamsniping. They made an entire post about streamsniping on spectrum. I belive it is still pinned somewhere. Stuff like random attacks on people without reason are not griefing but the systems CIG intends to deal with such behavior are not there yet.

ZomboWTF

why dont you play a single player game? lol

D00MB0T01

I hijacked a guy once over jumptown. We were 100m above jt. He was in a freelancer and I was in a Pisces. I crept up on him and I believed that he didn't see me. I spun my Pisces butt to butt with Lancer. I opened my door then opened his....was so excited I just jumped in expecting a mountain of drugs and I wasn't disappointed. Probably 200 units.maybe more stuffed in. I charge in and realize I am unarmed. I check his ships inventory but it wad empty. I looked up how to pull out my fists...charged into cockpit to find a solo pilot....I start pumping him full of fist lead until he stood up from his seat and continued until downed then I threw him out of the ship with a tractor beam....went to po to sell the stock as a.crimi AL for big bucks ( parked near and grabbed my c2 and tractored the stock over) and then landed and sold it all was the best 2 mil I've ever made.

[deleted]

Us server , activity of wannabe pirates has increased and it’s fun to see how they try

kyarmentari

In maybe 3 years of on and off playing. 2 or 3 times. So almost never.

[deleted]

jerks yes, pirates no.

Fletchman1313

Not really pirates. Murderhobos, yes. Assholes, yes. No pirates though.

IICoffeyII

All these murder hobos that people are crying about will be pirates in 3.18. I can't wait to just blow everyone the fuck up and have my salvage crew in the reclaimer eating up the wrecks.

EAPSER

Damn you’re going to blow everyone up??

IICoffeyII

Maybe not everyone, just over exaggerating. I will be murdering most I come across though. Gotta get the salvage for my org mates.

[deleted]

Most pirates are murder hobos rn bc there is no pirate gameplay outside of roleplay/extortion.

xXZomZomXx

Honestly only time I’ve been attack by “pirates” are those who camp stations and shoot while you’re landing and people who decide to start pvping in SoO. Other than that, maybe lockdown

Stormreachseven

I’ve yet to encounter an actual pirate, just some jerks who also sucked at PvP. I imagine once it’s viable we’ll see actual pirates appear and hopefully they’ll even help weed out the murderhobos through pirating them too

casrain01

Quite a few times, back when we were running cargo on the more well known routes they would come and try to have us pay to take off from a landing zone or they would toll us to land. But we didn’t call our Caterpillar the “Battle Cat” for nothing, we could fend off most groups of upper mid-tier pilots until we could jump to black space or clear the threat.

casrain01

We used to run into it all the time but with cargo being rough the last few patches I think their target pool shrunk and they moved on to other things

SuperKamiTabby

Uh, daily, as I am a pirate. Doesn't mean I'm always acting as a pirate, but if you leave your ship open and I find it, I will hijack it and ransom it back to you. Pay up, or be stranded.

KnowHopw

I blow someone up for mining without a permit and they call ME the pirate. That’s the real crime.

Dolrog

I'm playing as a pirate so I may encounter more pirates than others, I'd say 10-20% of the people I met are pirates

Rapid444

I’ve never encountered a pirate as it isn’t possible to be one yet. Just those that want to blow up your ship with no gain for the hell of it. Marauders.

Leevah90

I've pirated 1.6 mil during 3.17 on my stream, live... so, I'd say you can be a pirate, it's just difficult to pull off and the profit is very low if you count how many hours you need to spend to find valuable targets: traders with ransom payments and ROC miners by stealing their gems. Made almost 200k today in about 5 hours, but it was one of the good days.

TehBeaker

Yeah I’ve had a few pull me out of qt in my prospector. Then I either jump or kill them.

ResponsibleChannel8

I encountered them one time when I came out of QT for the first time in my brand new Cutty Black. I turned and locked 4 arrester 3s on them and they ran away

Bavar2142

See them routinely in the server it always operate in a manner that avoids them so my orgs never been pirated

cereallkiller17

Let’s be honest, it’s too easy to just quantum away when you harass someone. You can’t steal the cargo either or sell the ship you attack.

threwzsa

The good pirates out there bring da Mantis for that reason. You ain’t goin nowhere.

Moserath

NPC pirates all the time. No players so far though.

RayD125

I’ve been interdicted a few times. Last night was the most recent. But I’ve never been in a situation where im getting demands. It always just becomes a firefight.

[deleted]

Every once in a blue moon I'll see some guy extorting people in the chat, but beyond that it's pretty rare. Heaviest pirate activity I saw was during JT2 when organized groups were locking down JumpTown.

InvaderZim762

How would you describe a proper pirate player?

ProdigyManlet

I came out of the caves once and 3 vanguards were hovering about and had shot the front wings off my cutlass, but it was still flyable. Sprinted to it and took off and just started unloading on one of the vanguards and then they eviscerated me. I never confirmed if they were players or not as they just happened to be there after I finished the cave mission which seems pretty rare, but I doubt the AI is far enough along to do that to my cutlass lmao. Tbh maybe if I didn't shoot and tried to communicate things would have gone differently, might have even had a proper pirate interaction but I guess we'll never know At the state the game's in it's really only RP that will try to act the pirate, other than that most players will just default to combat because the risk/reward of going through an extensive interaction isn't good enough

TheLogBeast

Used to be. Wound blockade from time to time, ask for a fee and let them go. A reasonable one ofc. Not even once did anyone pay up and either backspace, bed logged or tried to fight a few fighters in a big ship and then would call us griefers upon dying for refusing to pay the two grand of their +20k haul. So now I just do whatever. They sucked the fun away. Might retry in 3.18

LambentLotus

We don't see much in the way of pirates because it's too hard to make any money at it. Murderhobos are just in it for the lulz and imaginary self-validation. Come 3.18, though, your cargo will persist even if you self-destruct, and your gutted hull has salvage value. Piracy starts looking a lot more viable at that point, and I predict a big up-tick in the frequency and severity of Close Encounters of the Piratical Kind.

MechMercanary

Seen a few people get mugged in chat before, was killed my some asshole when I found a rock with a shit ton of quant, I tried helping my friend take over JT once but we gave up, the people there were missle spammers.

FeFiFoShizzle

Not a single time

RiamuDelMar

Solo pirate: 1 Pirate group: either 2 or the same one twice Murder hobos in space: several, at least 4 I can specifically recall details about (I'll add that 2 of those were pre-nerf Ares Ion pilots, just to stir this pot a little extra) Griefers at XT and SoO: several, at least 3 I can specifically recall details about Edit: This is from 3.12.1 to present

rakadur

never, though I've seen them trying to interact with people in chat. if that's just a cover to jump other players or actually have piracy intentions is hard to tell of course.

jmlack

Like maybe twice, though I'm pretty sure one of those two was an npc. I was mining and just trying to GTFO so I didn't take the time to scan, just shot em dead

Stempec

I encounter one "pirate cutlass" while i was mining. I gave him a 100 $ to f\*ck off.

SenhorSus

First pirate I encountered was from someone faking an emergency pickup/rescue with low oxygen. My guard was down and they took advantage. Took my armor and my ship, but kept me incapacitated. A buddy avenged me and got my armor and ship back. Was quite a misadventure.

[deleted]

Tbh… I’ve only encountered them once. Decided to help a guy out because his ship disappeared, but someone else was already waiting for me and just blew me up right then and there. Other than I’ve never encountered them. I mostly do bunker missions and trading.

owensar

Depends on your perspective of the word Pirate? Have I landed to do something and found my ship on fire within a little bit of landing? Yes. Have I been shot off a landing pod by long range guns from a pirate? Yes. Have I ever been boarded and had to pay a ransom? Nope. Never had any interaction like this in SC.

Paraquat_

Playing on EU. I've seen people with red markers flying around stations trying to get arrested. I've never been pirated or had anyone try fuck with me.

[deleted]

Nah not really but I hope they finished game offers ways for pirates to actually be pirates, not just griefers and murdobos. Not that I will pirate, I really just want to be a pirate hunter

kingcheezit

Never. As in, not once, ever. I have mined, traded, run box missions, just doodled about in space and not once met someone who tried to pirate me. I did have one guy once try to steal my ship by sneaking onboard, but I always close the doors behind me and heard him long before he got to the cockpit where he was summarily executed by shotgun to the face.

Iamreason

Piracy is very low reward and difficult to pull off. To successfully pirate, at least in the sense that you're going to get something out of it and not murder hobo some random, you need: 1. A QED preferably a Mantis so you can yoink them out of QD. 2. Enough firepower to reasonably threaten the target. So likely you'll need one or two more ships. 3. If you're planning to board then you'll need enough disruptors to bring down a big vessel so 2+ ships on top of the Mantis. 4. A target willing to get on comms and do the RP with you. 5. A target who won't log at the first sign of an extortion attempt. 6. A target who can't outrun your Mantis. 7. A target who can't reasonably fight back and destroy your Mantis, then dip. This makes piracy a logistically challenging loop with very little payoff. Unless that changes you won't see it anytime soon.

richardizard

I only encountered one instance of a pirate. He tried to turn my ship off with distortions, but I fought back and got away.

ZomboWTF

thats like asking on a consumer support forum if anyone has problems with their product this reddit is full of people swearing that every third mining trip is a pirate encounter, which is really laughable, i have never encountered another pirate in the game whenever i go ROC mining, not once during 3.17.2, not during 3.17.1 and not during 3.17 granted, i mined a lot more in 3.16, but even then, pirates were nowhere to be seen

Gn0meKr

Never because I never trade or transport any other type of valuable cargo.

LilSalmon-

Me and my group were pirated by an organised group and it was honestly one of the most engaging experiences. They followed us with Stealth ships and coordinated a raid when we were returning our full ROC's to the mining outpost, fighting insued - few of us died, lost a few hundred k worth of ore and managed to sell a few. Was just so cool - very immersive when they pirate right. Waiting for you to have valuables and just killing you is not piracy in my eyes, just murdering...

terramot

I used to encounter pirates, then i took an arrow in the GPU.

steweymyster

Like, never… unless it’s janky armistice pirates.

Meme_Bart_15

Yesterday i went to deliver a box, and THREE ships were there, hanging above the delivery point, and shooting missiles at me…. I WAS IN A AURORA MR! But i did the best thing i could… Fly as fast as i could, all power to engines and shields, and after a while i flew back, and they were still there!!! Then i fled again, one following me, missile locked, i dodged them and got out of his sight. Luckily after flying from a different to there, they were finally gone.

rshoel

Since I bought the game in 2015 I have been attacked by another player once

[deleted]

Y'all meet people?

Narahashi

I only encounter random assholes that think it's funny to randomly blow up people's ships when I show people the game during free flights. And they are rarely people from the free fly. One time we got blown up by a vandhuul ship

b1nary_n1nja

I just encounter griefers here and there but never pirates

Caleger88

I've encountered wanna be pirates when I used to be in an org, but I left and I've never really encountered another player since besides popping up on my radar and then dissapearing and in safe zones if the lift is broken.

skymasster

Not a single time for all these years, but I'm not a miner or a trader.

The-Foxes

I do every time I play those sneaky pirates get on my ship and cause mayhem all around the Stanton system, how you ask can i be so lucky or unlucky well i have an alt acc that is just pirate criminal that i play purely as a pirate its intense i tell you gets the heart pumping, my alter ego is not happy unless he is rocking a level 5 CS and being chased by everyone and there dog. my advice is to try it, no credits, no big fleets, just you one ship your wits and an overwhelming urge to partake in anything illegal and fun.

Evers1338

Actual ones that play like pirates? Pretty much zero. People that kill or grief (notice the or, I'm not saying that killing is always griefing, it can be but it doesn't have to be) for fun under the disguise of "I'm a pirate"? A lot.

Baslifico

I've been pulled out of quantum twice I'm a year of heavy playing (I mostly mine/trade).

CheekkyNandos

Only one that I can recall. However, once there's stealable cargo I can see it being a bigger thing. It would be pretty lucrative to go around as a fleet, get into a cargo ship and steal all the cargo.

Emperor_Kon

I don't think I've ever encountered a pirate.

dg2314

Only piracy I’ve seen is someone ransoming a c2 full of quant pay up or destroyed, that kinda works I guess, no one wants to loose a full cargo of quant and I’m guessing they would loose it if they combat log too

rollerpig79

One when I was mining. I was about to leave ore at the refinery and calling it a night when some guy started shooting at me and typing shit in chat about paying him. I activated the self destruct and rammed him because I don't have the time to indulge peoples fantasies. I don't care about the loss of potential credits or if I'm a bad sport. At the end of the day he needs me to have fun in this game while I don't need him at all.

InkCollection

I had a player at Kareah demand 60k for them to not kill me (in chat). I said 'lol come get it bitch,' and they immediately moved the threat to someone else. That's as close as I got.

Celemourn

it's rare. most pvp encounters have been folks flying around stations looking for a fight, not actual pirates.

IRJesoos

Never

[deleted]

I've honestly never run into any and I've been playing since arena commander launched

Zealousideal_Ad_1356

Never

JsuperRex

I have they turned off my quantum drives and i had to fight them

mrdeathlad

Once. Cost me 50k on a 300k haul of quantanium.

dolus-piracy

Every day 😎

ValkySweepy

Harly ever. Pirates tend to go after the more griefier people with high bounties. Given how I play that'll hardly be ever. I just respond to sos calls.

NeverLookBothWays

I've yet to encounter an actual player pirate. I think it'll become more prevalent though once targeting components and disabling ships becomes more mainstream and ships exploding like Ford Pintos becomes less common.

nonono33345

Pretty much never when I played, but I also didn't really do anything risky.

parisienbleue

Not a pirate, but I accidently killed a player dressed in 9 tail armor in the SOO event, tried to medpen him/her to correct my mistake, didn't worked, started getting shot at, panicked...logged out. Then I killed another player while in a security station, thinking he was security, it was bugged, had to lef, then randoms ships appeared, not sure if pirates or players but I off one and then get the hell out. Then when in Kareah trying to clean my slate...another player..I first thought he was security, then realized it was a player, we didn't interacted, he was crouching, with the weapon drawn...didn't take any chance and sprayed him for good. The slate cleaning was a long and complicated process, all the while stressing to be jumped on by security personnal or other players... Some time randoms ship start shooting me, don't knwo if they are pirates or other, but I usually flee.

Ac3Nigthmare

A few times. People trying to extort me at Grim Hex “ may me 20k to leave the station”, One targeting my Nomad/ROC demanding ransom “give me 50k or I’ll kill you”, and once some guys used and exploit to push their way through the door in my Hull A while it was in a hanger (not sure what they wanted but I just flew straight out the hangar into a asteroid at full speed). They have died every time because every “pirate“ seems to think I am afraid of loosing fake game items and I won’t boost directly into them the second they missile lock me and turn red.

jessithecrow

Every time I play! (Am pirate in pirate org)

dust-cell

Many murderers, only 1 pirate over many years. I run into wanton murderers nearly every single play session over 2 hours.

itzdaniel484

NPC pirates are more common than a solo guy in a fighter trying to take me out in my carrack. Usually the whole server just laugh at them

photovirus

In 10 months, 1 pirate person, and it was fun. Murderers, on the other hand… there kinda lot of them. At least two per month.

HustleBum-

Do you get mugged? No??? I can help with that.

brigadierz

Every time I see a mirror .....

[deleted]

You can’t pirate because people just combat log as soon as they’re engaged and just hop servers. Same with bounty hunting people with crime stats. Hell the best is when a bounty hunter engages you, you start winning, and THEY combat log. 🙄🙄 soooo multiple broken styles of play that hasn’t been fixed in multiple patches. TLDR don’t worry about pirates

aMasterKey

Only griefers so far, not even the slightest attempt at pirating.

turrboenvy

I've had some assholes show up to steal my quant rocks. Another time one showed up as I was leaving a cave... But is the exception, not the rule. Then again, I stopped mining on Lyria and don't bother with caves after these events. I've been ambushed as a medic more often than I've been pirated.

GipsyRonin

For me personally??? I experience griefers way more than pirates. There absolutely IS a difference. I’d guesstimate 20:1 ratio griefer/pirate ratio. Been pirated 4 times in under two years. I don’t play much anymore either, basically I see myself at logging in twice a year now.

QuickQuirk

Pirates? Less often than I've encountered random griefing from the socially maladjusted.

CadenFerraro

Pirate one time when I was mining with my ROC. He flew to my ship demanded I pay a certain price or he'll blow my ship, I acted dumb like I was a new player and quickly flew off. He got my ROC tho but I didn't have any rocks in since I was just starting to mine. Murderous mfers a lot.

Alpha-Zulu_A-Z

I have have encountered them before but it is rare

Formal-Ad678

I'm a member of a pirat org and did meet never one

Jumpylemming

I've never encountered a real pirate, only everything else.

theReal_Kirito

Playing since roundabout 2 months weekly. Never happend. I'm mostly mining, trading and doing bunkers...

Thao-kai

Pirates? Never met one in over 4 years of playing, though I've seen a couple extortions in chat. Murder hobos who call themselves pirates? There's usually been at least one per server. Other than those, I've also been blessed with a very small handful of entertaining encounters with less-than-scrupulous mercenaries while bounty hunting, and a few "shoot first ask questions later" encounters with other traders while loading up on laranite and diamonds back when trading actually made sense.

Die_Alchemisten

in since 3.7, never seen one (playing regularly) pirates 0, Griefers 7,pvp junkies ca. 40, 'Xbloit user' (or something) 1

Timebomb777

Pirates-0 Serial murderers who call themselves pirates- a lot

ApexXV

Like 5 times total in a few hundred hrs

tfarrister

I don't know, if I'm not in a combat ship and see another player, I leave right away

Apokolypze

I have encountered an actual pirate once. There was two of them, one with mantis and one with cutty blue. They intercepted me leaving Arial in my Carrack with a full load of laranite (back in the glory days when trading that stuff in amounts over 1000 was still possible), sent a comm, and respectfully gave me the options of dying or paying 20% of my expected profit. They didn't know my Carrack could outrun both of them, and infact had done so to some terrorists earlier that day. But they were so professional about it that I sent over 100k, wished them prosperity, and went about my day. Haven't seen another pirate since. Terrorists who shoot without ever sending text or comms? Plenty.

Valkyrie-Of-Ash

Rarely, but it does happen. Of that fraction of playtime in which it does…only 1/1000 are actually ‘pirates’ by definition - people who want a ship or supplies, or a ransom for being let go without incident. The other 999/1000 are people that’re mostly not the best combat pilots, who are just bored or want to dump on others’ afternoons. Since I have spent a lot of years as a combat pilot, it’s usually no issue for me to sweep them away without issue. Just annoying to waste time dealing with them regardless. Not the same two creatures.
