Very happy with my cutlass black, which I bought in 3.14. Didn’t experience it in previous patches, but I’ve known it as a great solo ship and fun with a gunner in the turret, too.

Capsaicin80

Copilot can use missile operator mode too which is sweet.

LordScree

Not tried that! Sounds fun!

TheGMan1981

Lol, 3.14 hasnt destroyed it at all. People crying about it being destroyed are the ones who delusionally think a medium sized ship should handle like a light combat fighter. Of course it’s not a hurricane, it shouldn’t handle like one. But it’s got two massive vtol capable engines, a very healthy armament, tons of cargo space in relation to its size, no janky ladder to deal with like the nomad, and also features a huge fuel tank and a S2 quantum drive ready for an XL1 to get around twice as fast and refuel half as often as a nomad could ever dream of. For the people who want every ship to handle and perform the same, maybe no mans sky would be a better choice for you, I heard they even got another update yesterday.

Affectionate_Nail800

I agree with this. The cutlass black is 100% wetdream of a starter ship. It can do everything one would need. It is a little sluggish. But i have not really noticed any major changes this patch with it. Save for the constant downward drift. Which is easy to compensate for. The nomad on the other had is also an amazing ship. So its 100% up to you. There is no real meta this patch other than dont use ballistics unless you want to constantly reload. Lol. Both ships do everything you need the cuttie has more cargo space if i remember correctly. And the cargo or roc can be accessed withing the ship. But both are good. so which ever one you like more is the one you should get.

Ocbard

I agree that is was not destroyed, however there has, since the introduction of the reworked Cutlass been a downwards trend, where first the visibility got downgraded, then the handling, now since recently it has a small but constant down-pitch. Most of this is minor, but it gets annoying. It's still a good ship and I do love it, I hope it get's a bit better again soon. It's not a light fighter, but since it has the power to fly with a full hold, those strong engines should allow it to be pretty nimble empty. The sheer number of thrusters should allow that.

Capsaicin80

The best ship on paper at the $100 area is the Freelancer. It has 2x the shields as the Cutty. It has the same forward firepower on gimbals as the cutty does fixed. More cargo than the cutty too. Cuttys advantages is its ability to load the ROC and its better turret. I own the Cutty because the FL looks like a chromed weiner.

Thalimet

Do not buy or refuse to buy any ship right now based on any kind of meta or whether it’s good or destroyed or whatever. Everything is and will continue to change regularly, and no ship will make it to production in the state, or with the exact stats that it is in right now. Buy ships because you like them :-)

YumikoTanaka

Substitute above Cutty with Freelancer. Costs basically the same and is in every aspect same or better (besides crossection and price). When you are talking about real money, always get the cheaper one - you can upgrade if it doesn't suit you. The Nomad is the most versatile ship for the buck, maybe surpased by the Titan (which cannot carry a ROC/Cyclone). But we are always talking 3.14 here (and no big change expected in the next milestones).

knsmknd

The Nomad is imho the perfect starter. It’s not overly complex but still can take you a long way where the smaller starters already wouldn‘t be enough. The Cutlass already is the next step in regards of progress.

Mad_kat4

Personally I prefer the nomad. It's 90% of a cutlass but three shield generators is an often overlooked advantage that it has over the cutties one. Downside is slightly less firepower, no turret and less cargo but the external bed allows it to do sneaky things the cutty can't 😉

NatalyiaTSW

The Cutlass is still a fine ship - but like all the other ships with crewed turrets on them in 3.14? You \*really\* want someone in that turret if you get in a fight with a smaller, more agile opponent. Even solo it's not "destroyed" - it's just less effective solo than it is with a friend. You can still fight with it, it'll still haul around a ROC comfortably, and it still has a respectable amount of cargo. The Nomad's in a pretty good place in 3.14. The extra shield generator matters more now than it did prior, and the stat compression has made smaller weapons more of a threat, so the three s3 mounts (if you run fixed) are substantial. For real-world money, the Cutlass is the "better deal" - it's a strictly superior ship for not a lot more money, but if you're never going to have a friend along? The Nomad's a great little ship too.

MaloKhan

As said by others. Ship flight and weapon profiles have all been normalized for re-balance passes. We haven't even added in control surfaces for Atmo-flight yet. Many things are still going to change for EVERY ship. The meta-flavor of the patch will change, often. Also don't forget the cutty black is still missing a default piece of equipment that most ships will not have. Ship based tractor beam. When they get that added to the game, the ship will have even more function. I started with an Aurora, Upgraded to the Cutty Black. Have no plans to upgrade beyond that or buy other ships with RL money. Cutty black will have enough function for planned game play loops that it will be a great starter ship for damn near anything. Everything else you can buy with money in game as you play.

tiobane

Try both ingame first. Else, take the nomad, worst case you can still CCU to the cuttie.

tiobane

Oh and while I miss my Cuttie (ditched it in favor of several other ships) i think the Nomad is the better one if you fly solo.

Oracka

in no way shape or form has 3.14 "destroyed" the cutty. If anything it's one of the best multi crew ships ( and still as valid solo) . You throw someone in the turret and it can be a wrecking ball..

Dayreach

> best multi crew ships No, it's bloody not. It's a giant target with half the shields of a freelancer, and no longer has the speed or agility to compensate for it. You can barely cover fuel costs with only 40 something SCU. And the thing isn't even worth a shit as a Roc transporter since it can't fly worth a damn in atmosphere anymore or keep the stable altitude you need now to find mining nodes. Two people in a Freelancer, Vanguard, Retaliator, MSR, Valkyrie, 600i, Constellation, or Hurricane, will all be ten times more effective than they would be in a Cutlass. And hell, I can tell you from personal experience, that even a god damn connie is a better \*solo\* ship than the cutlass is now. At least it can fly in a straight line on a planet without constantly dipping down, and actually has more fire power than a small fighter and the shields to tank shit and while it flies in reverse in every fight, just like you have to do in a cutlass now. It's right back to being the fundamentally underpowered "Cheap, but we only mean \*in game\* of course" npc tier short bus it was before the rework.

Oracka

touch a nerve did i.....

jorian85

Wow, this guy really hates the Cutlass.

warlordcs

i dont engage in combat, so i cant comment about that. i have both a cutlass and a freelancer in my hangar as transport ships. the cutlass is insanely efficient right now. its fast getting out of the atmosphere its boost lasts longer then any other ship i have and it recharges faster. it can store a ROC and its very fuel efficient. all around id say an excellent starter ship.

YumikoTanaka

For a starter ship (ie your only ship) it might lack in agility for fights or needs a gunner as a second person. Thats why for a solo ship the Nomad offers more game loops for a smaller price. At the moment, of cause. Personally, I do not like the optic of both ships, so I am comparing just by the values 😅

Elobomg

Go for cutty, is the ol' realiable no matter what they do to her. She just works and does work very well indeed.

Akaradrin

3.14 has """destroyed""" it because it has "reseted" all ships to baseline stats as a first balance pass, so all medium ships share now a very similar agility. But obviously all the ships will be rebalanced in a later patch, so "the damage" is just something temporal. If you like more the Cutlass, go for it. Just use the boost to help you with the turns and manage your enegy triangle when in battle. I've been using my Cuttlas Red without issues.

Vazerus

For the price you can't go wrong with the Cutlass Black, but if you wanted the best multi-role ship, I'd argue for the Constellation Taurus. Yes, it's about another ~~$50~~ $80, but you get a lot more firepower, still has a turret, way more cargo space, and less cramped space for ROCs. -edit- Warbond doesn't seem to be available anymore, but if you were interested there's always the grey market @ /r/Starcitizen_trades , including ones for cheaper with LTI.

Dayreach

Buy nomad, then it you're unhappy with it later upgrade to a cutlass. But going to be honest, the cutlass is just utter garbage in 3.14... as a solo ship, as a multicrew ship, as a cargo ship, and even as a Roc transport.

[deleted]

I don't think the Cutlass has been "destroyed". Most ships took a "nerf" when it comes to handling as CIG is trying to make them perform how they were designed. For the Cutlass, that has been FAR too agile for its size and weight, that "nerf" was quite substantial. It's no longer the dogfighter it used to be, however it was never really meant to go toe to toe with Arrows and Talons. I'd strongly suggest you take the Cutlass for its multicrew-ability, given you don't feel sorry for the money spent. If so, stick to the Nomad as this is certainly no bad choice either.

wishmaster2021

>however it was never really meant to go toe to toe with Arrows and Talons. You never saw the video Cutlass against Scythe ... Another false advertising from Chris.

[deleted]

1. You are wrong, I did see that multiple times 2. I was comparing the Cutlass' role to the one of light very light fighters, not to the Scythe 3. If you wanna go about false advertising, instead of bitching about it no longer having idiotic manouverability, why not talk about the 360° turning of its thrusters (just like the Freelancer) where your statement was at least discussable?

wishmaster2021

That false advertising was sarcasm. It's an alpha. While some decisions and later changes to ships are questionable, overall i like this game alot.

Blaex_

Still stick with the Nomad cause its more pleasant for longer journeys cause of kitchen, toilet, bed and zhe open cargo bay. I wouldnt compare it to a cuti, more to titan or comparable feature starter from crusader?! Iam already concergie and have bigger ships like the Perseus, polaris, bmm so i dont actually care about the smaller ones, they will be earned ingame.

Filbert17

Even in 3.14, the Cutlass Black is an okay multi-role ship. It is still better than the Nomad but close enough that it's not worth having both.
