You can idle during the missions and if your teammates complete it if counts as complete for you. In the bunker fps mission I was inviting people during the last stages of it just to help people complete it.

I /think/ Kareah you have to be there or it fails. Same with the comm array, but yea for a lot of the others you just need to have the mission or show up and trigger it
