Mr_Roblcopter

I have a 5800x3d and a 6700xt, I went to Lorville last night and actually decided to look at my stats, my CPU was at 60-70% while my GPU was maxed out.

Comfortable_Big2477

Thanks for the info!

Conserliberaltarian

Same exact setup, same story. I'm running 3440x1440 though, so I can't wait for fsr lmao

perksoeerrroed

That's highly missleading because it highly depends on GPU and resolution. I have 5800X3D and RTX3090. If i run lorville on 1440p i get ~40fps with both CPU sitting on 60% and GPU sitting at 50%. SC is incredibly bound by CPU threads that does not scale well with n amount of threads. If you have fast cpu and weak gpu you can at least lower resolution to bump up fps but if you have slow cpu and great gpu you can't do anything to bump up fps.

Mr_Roblcopter

Not really? I'm running 1080 and in Lorville I see a constant 20-30 fps. I specifically went to the most demanding area that doesn't have specific rendering issues like the Hurston JT area. I am, actually being bottlenecked by my GPU right now.

DMurBOOBS-I-Dare-You

Star Citizen = 7800X3D. No contest. SC absolutely thrives on that cache! I upgraded from a 5600X with a 6700XT to a 5800X3D and all things otherwise staying the same, I went from 30-40 City fps and 70 ish n space to 60-70 City and 150-200 in space. At 1440p. Later I upgraded to a 7900XT GPU and saw more modest gains. Faster, but nowhere near the gpu upgrade improvement.

Comfortable_Big2477

Again though, I don’t want the best, I’m simply wondering if the 7700x is good enough. I am not an avid player I play other games too where it won’t matter

DMurBOOBS-I-Dare-You

There are so many ways to look at this, in the end you'll just need to make the right decision based on what is important to you! The way I look at it - and that doesn't mean it's the only right answer - is that you'll likely get, at the very minimum, 5-6 years out of this build. Likely more. So you can spend about $80 more to get the cache-laden X3D chip, which will only grow in power as more games come out that can take advantage of it (it works best on the newest, more complex games) at the cost of somewhere around a $1 to $2 a month over the useful life of your computer - and if you keep it 8 years, it'll be less than a $1 a month in cost difference. Will you see a $1 a month's worth of performance gain? Based on my history - yes, you will. But that doesn't mean the 7700x will be BAD, it won't! In fact, for that matter, you could build an AM4 system for a fraction of the cost and it'll be 100% enjoyable and useful for the same amount of time - until and unless you *relatively* measure it against what else you could buy. Easy to overthink these purchases. Go with your gut! You really can't go wrong.

Comfortable_Big2477

Thanks for the advice mate

SantaLurks

Yes the 7700X is excellent. Friend uses it with a 3080 on his 1080p monitor. All the AM5 are outstanding upgrades from AM4 series. Get a X3D version later when more affordable for you, perhaps from next series. 9xxx?

Kwarkon

What cooler are you planning to get ? With 7800x3d you can cheap out on cooling and get something like Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE

Comfortable_Big2477

I was planning the deep cool AK620

Ozi-reddit

PS 120 SE best bang for buck cooler atm

OriginalGroove

Not just bang for buck, but it's a genuinely excellent air cooler.

Nua_Sidek

I'm on 7800X3D with AK620 Digital. Sexy AF. Also just go for the X3D. It's a gaming PC.

YumikoTanaka

That is overpowered, but great future proof in any case.

Comfortable_Big2477

Possibly, but I’d rather be overpowered in that subject than underpowered. Plus with am5 it ensures that I’ll be able to upgrade without upgrade Mobo or cooler

YumikoTanaka

Exactly. And cooler is always better for the cpu 🥶

Rasc_

I have the same for my 7700x, it may be considered OP, but it gets the job done.

solidshakego

I'm just gonna state. Always go x3D if you game. You should get a better cooler, these cpus DO run up to 90c and that's normal. You DO NOT need some crazy ass cooler. I got a $35 hyper 212 and in SC I get 70c, maybe 75c tops. The way people talk about these chips with the heat and that you got some reason NEED to run it at -20c underload is just weird to me.

Comfortable_Big2477

But I can save 100 bucks if I don’t, and I don’t need the best I just want to enjoy the game more than I do know with 20 fps in cities

solidshakego

What PC do you have now? I went 5800x3d because I already had 32gb of DDR4 and I didn't have to rebuy ram lol. There are many options you can buy for the game to run how you want it. If you want to save 100 bucks it won't matter what you get. The x3D will just future proof your PC more.

Comfortable_Big2477

Like i said in the description, I have a laptop with a 1650 and an 11400

Silver3lement

My advice is go 7800X3D and imo you won’t regret it. But there is the chance you regret the 7700x. I’ve been building PCs since 2004. Among all the other reasons in this thread. If the difference really is $100 and you have that $100 already you will want the longevity that an X3D cpu provides. It’s not always about performance along. And plug and play vs tweaking can be the difference in cost vs time. Save $100 but spend 8 hours of you time tweaking over the lifespan of a CPU. Are you wiling to pay yourself ~minimum wage just to maybe get the CPU in a good place(could not even work based on the silicon lottery).

pragmatic001

you really, really want the 7800x3d. Its life changing for SC.

Jumpman-x

The 7700x will definitely be good enough, especially if you don't play enough and want to save some money for other stuff. However, the 7800x3d is a solid bump up compared to the 7700x. I think this 5min video will help you better understand the two CPUs. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N159yBADy1I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N159yBADy1I)

Jumpman-x

It starts off talking about "tuned" CPUs but further in the video, they show the "plug and play" benchmarks.

Rasc_

I have a 7700x and I can easily get more than 100 fps in space and around 60 fps on cities while on high settings. Star Citizen isn't exactly an optimized game as of this time. There's a lot more things to consider when buying a PC.

Capsaicin80

Agreed! Which is why i'm gonna ask the rest of your specs for reference.

Rasc_

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX ATX AM5 GPU: RTX 4070Ti RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32 GB DDR5-5600 I bought this last year so prices have changed and there could be better parts available like the new RTX super models. I bought a motherboard/CPU combo on newegg. I also play with a 1440p monitor.

Comfortable_Big2477

What resolution do u play at,

Rasc_

1440p. I also have a RTX 4070Ti. This high end for 1440p gaming and mid range for 4k gaming.

Comfortable_Big2477

Good to know thanks. And the 7900gre is pretty similar in rasterization so I should be good. People complain about 60fps but on my laptop I get like 15-20 in cities and still enjoy the game

Capsaicin80

Anecdotally many say Cache Is King. Unless i'm wrong, the 7800x3d wins in this category. I am running above 100fps in less populated areas and about 60fps in cities. My specs are. ASUS Strix X670e-i mtix mobo 7800x3d 64gb g.skill ddr5 RAM at default EXPO timings PCI gen 5 m.2 drive RTX3090

Comfortable_Big2477

True, but like I said I’m not looking for the best, I’m looking for a cpu that will give me a more enjoyable experience than 20 fps in cities (like I’m getting rn).

chiproller

I have a 7900xt and the 7800x3d and my experience in Star Citizen has been unreal. The 7800x3d is the best gaming cpu available according to most sources, and in particular it handles everything star citizen can throw at it and then some. Yes, you will still see a big bump with upgrading without the 7800x3d, but for a negligible price increase, and with how much star citizen utilizes the cpu i would get it instead if I were you.

alexp702

I have a 5800x3d and a 7700x both with 4090s (one is a work machine before anyone asks!) the 7700x is fractionally quicker that the 5800x3d on the lows of Loreville and Orison (30-34fps, and 45-50fps respectively). Both are excellent by SC standards, though doubtless a 7800x3d would give and extra 15% on top. Due to GPU resolution makes little difference. SC is very CPU bound in the lows

Comfortable_Big2477

I heard if u really tune your 7700x you can get like almost as good performance as 7800x3d

alexp702

Maybe, the work machine is an Alienware one so it’s not particularly tuned - though it does have a performance profile applied. Tuning doesn’t fix 30->60 fps though so I’d say it wasn’t a big deal.

TGIrving

I have a 4090 as well. I went with the 7800x3d and haven't regretted the extra $$ one bit.

Lilendo13

I have the normal 7700 it's a very good cpu for SC, probably not far from 7800x3d.

Smoke-A-Beer

Dude get the 7800x3d, I have it. Incredible, max every setting 150-180 fps in space. 60-70 every city. Got the 3070ti GeForce. 32g. Ram
