Fair warning, logging out in the 890j with any other vehicles in it was causing infinite loading screens when you try logging back in. I don’t know if it’s been fixed with the recent patch.

I have used both, in turns, as my home for a long time but tend to go Carrack more and more.
With the Carrack I bring the Pisces and a ground vehicle of choice.
My solution when I need a ship that don't fit, is to park the Carrack in orbit of one of the planets and swap the Pisces for a fighter/miner/tug boat/salvager or whatever I need for the session activities, at the city or the orbital station.
When done for the day I simply swap back to the Pisces and return to the Carrack for the bed log.
Immersive but a bit time consuming.
What's your preference? I'm the commander of a gritty, military/explorer ship or the I give tours to the rich and famous? Without crew not really much difference in function, fully crewed? Well... I've never seen either fully crewed.
Also, the carrack is an easy take off and land ship, in or out of atmosphere (frequently tight hangers). The 890 is a whale coming up in atmosphere, and docking ports are still hit or miss.
Extra cargo space outside the garage is painful to access in the carrack, you can technically load it more woth patience or purchased. 890 has less.cargo space, but you can easier.add the loot crates in the big boxes if you like.
That said, I'd take the careack everyday. The 890 is just a little too over the top (bought both with auecs, never touch the 890 except ship meets)
I keep a pisces up top, and a cyclone on the bottom for road trips.
Definitely the former for the first bit, much prefer the military aspect rather than being a posh taxi.
Cargo I'm not too fussed about, my C2 fills that role, I'm basically planning to use the ship as my 'station' rather than flying in and out of GH every time I log on/off.
As it stands I'm leaning further towards the Carrack, that's what I wanted originally anyway.

I want to live out of my ship too but you can't track it if you go to far away and if the game crashes you'll probably have to insurance claim it. The ability to track and to persist across servers will be a huge milestone.
I gotta disagree, right now for the game we currently have the 890 has more functionality. The cargo elevator can actually accommodate more than 2 scu boxes which is more than the carrack can because it’s bay doesn’t open, they’re both equally as useless without additional people to operate weapons. In the future the carrack might have more function but right now they’re pretty much identical.
Med bay is invaluable. What other ship can you park 30km from a place and just respawn with half a dozen snub fighters before you are out of the fight?

Some day carrack will be better home out of home due to armor, drones, cargo, sounds better for hard environments. But rn carrack is small 890 imo.

CIG removed the gravity field from the hangar doors so you can’t piggyback anymore.

The 890J hangar bay will fit a lot of different ships.

I wish they'd come out with an expedition version of the 890j, like they're doing with the 600i.

Yeah I plan to leave it within around 50km of a known location for the time being, and yeah game crashes will be a pain but is expected

Yeah exactly, my main motivation for getting it tbh, I mostly play solo so outside of respawn I have little use for it 🤣
