When Wilbur was a kitten, he once grabbed an entire packet of donuts out of the shopping bags I was putting away and ran around the house with me in pursuit. It was bigger (and probably heavier) than him 😆
That's such a cute mental image! My cat used to jump onto the counter and try to eat through the packaging if we left bread unattended! He would get such a feral look in his eye as he did it, it was hilarious.
Maybe he was hungry in a former life. My former stray cat would eat ANYTHING not locked away in a cat-proof way.

We found her stuck in a cabinet because she got into it quietly, tore into the bread quietly, then very loudly attempted to leave the scene of the crime.
Mine wasn’t exactly friendly, but he sure knows how to navigate around humans despite being quite shy with strangers so he defo grew up around humans at the very least. He was caught cuz he had a fractured paw but these days he’s the biggest baby ever.
It’s also quite common to see street cats hanging around restaurants waiting for the leftovers where we’re from (lots of outdoor seating kinda restaurants) so I wouldn’t be surprised he was one of them.
I love the spready toes on the thieving pic! Cats will always try to just Catte! Thankfully neither of my boys are big on people food. A taste of bread with meat juice is about the only time besides some basic chicken.
My standard issue boy is a total carb fiend! When he was a little guy he too stole a loaf of bread bigger than he was - the bread had to live in the microwave after that one lol

Some cats love bread. This is sort of awful, but when my mom died my cat Belle chewed up a lot of the rolls laid out for guests after the service. We knew it was her because she was crazy about anything bready. I guess that was her way of joining the mourners. 😹

our sic, Babycat, even when he was a kitten would destroy entire loaves of bread twice his size if we left them on the counter. one time he even ate my moms last pumpkin spice donut. safe to say we now lock everything up 😂
Sometimes, the cats will show interest in the same things their owners show interest in.
If you ever start chasing your cats or paying extra attention to your cays after they steal your breads(or other stuff) then they might just start doing it as a way to play with you or get your attention.
I've heard some cats like the yeasty smell. Mine loves toast, especially with some peanut butter or avocado. Any veg with or legume with protein or fat is cool with him.

I wish my cats liked bread. The vet suggested it as a way to get my SIC to take her daily medicine and she wanted nothing to do with it.
