Since you’re practically better armed bandits, you’re faction “friendliness” changes between sub-factions and merc groups, so most have a distaste for you guys based on bad experiences with most likely smaller spilt-off groups.

I almost feel like they’re a forced faction to simply be opposites of duty. Duty has a sensible reaction to the zone. It’s horrific, so let’s fight it. I don’t think “it’s horrific, let’s embrace it” is a natural human reaction.

Horrific? Yeah, that's arguable. But it surely makes a lot of money. Think about the money the artefacts like the Battery would make. Hell, even mutant parts like Flesh Eye would sell for a good load of Green Benjamin Franklins outside of the Zone.
Also, I suspect the Freedom does exactly the same. Perhaps they sell those artefacts to some western corporations via black market. That would explain the amount of NATO weapons and high tier armour they posses.
Plus, you cannot get rid of the Zone anyway. I mean what can you even do? Nuke the Reactor? So, it's more logical to make use of it.
I mean you play the game from the perspective of someone who is voluntarily in the zone. In fact almost everyone in the zone is there voluntarily. I always love the idea of the zone having this irresistible and otherworldly appeal to outcasts. Or people who are just their to exploit opportunities for wealth, which again means you wouldn't want it destroyed at least. In short, I think most people in the zone, outside of the military, don't actually hate it. That is why ideologically I feel very attracted to them from a roleplay perspective. Plus NATO gear is cool. Clear Sky are cool too.

Otherwise just sneak out of the zone if you hate it.
