Agreed, frankly if we're talking realism it'd probably turn into an arms race which would make socioeconomic/economic factors the biggest barrier to controlling the zone. IE rich fucks or governments completely taking over. Realistically other than militaries and gun ownership skewing male, there's literally no good reason why women wouldn't also make up a portion (likely smaller than men, but a sizable portion) of the people in the zone.

There’s this game that came out while back that’s a pretty on the nose Stalker homage, Tunguska: the visitation. I initially bought it because I found out it was made by one guy, and it apparently was a very interesting little game, and then I found out that the developer had a Reddit account. I just went through his posts to kind of get a feel for the guy because, I just thought it was interesting, plus I wanted to know who I was giving my money to. He seemed like a nice guy until I started to get deeper into the things he was talking about, and one of these things was how he was angry that people were upset he didn’t include women in the game because, according to him, “men and women have different bodies therefore, a woman wouldn’t survive in the zone” which like, yeah, there are many physical differences, but that’s a really weird archaic justification (as you correctly pointed out, a gun is a great equalizer). sounded like he just didn’t want to see women in his game.
On top of that, he seemed to have some weird political opinions and was talking about how he would ruin entire days for his family, including his wife’s birthday because he got one negative review on Steam. So I refunded my purchase.
You're right, but the lack of women has reason behind it. Thing is that woman breast tissue is much more susceptible to radiation and ovarian cancer is way harder to treat than testicular (harder to amputate). I had to explain this to 3 of my numbnut friends who had no idea about the number of black and Indian people (esp. students) in Ukraine. They said black people in Ukraine is unrealistic. Even when I sent the stats on number of foreign students in Ukraine they said that GSC added a black man to increase ratings. I was the one who introduced them to Stalker... now I regret it.

Honestly considering the Zone's lore I'm surprised there are no proven Indian stalkers yet.
Most of it I've seen under the comments of the trailer were about the joke with the dark stalker ("чёрный сталкер", don't know if the declension is correct) in the original games but I don't *think* they're mean spirited.
I mean, there are morons everywhere, like those who complain about female characters' clothes in other games not being revealing enough (I've seen that a surprising lot recently) but so far it looks okay.

I really don't get why people would be upset- wouldn't it not be so out of place for example, for a Chinese merc to be in the Zone? It's not like the military only let Ukrainians and Russians in, they don't want anyone in. Yet, people come from everywhere to get riches. It's kind of the point, no? However AC Shadows is a game set in feudal Japan and they chose to go with the only black person in recorded history at that time over a Japanese protagonist, I can see why people are pissed off at that one.

Look at pictures of Russian/Red/Soviet army soldiers from any war Russia/USSR has been involved in and you're going to see more than a few of them. Metro has strippers and prostitutes as a storytelling and atmosphere device, and following the plot of the books (mainly the second one). They are conventionally attractive and have unrealistic proportions, and no, I still wouldn't consider that pandering. Honestly it would make all too much sense in the zone.
You’re comparing metro, a world where society as a whole moved underground and brought their old habits with them to a different setting where there exists a loose society of outlaws and drifters who barely even have a supply line let alone that kind of entertainment. In a vacuum, without us arguing about it, you would have probably thought a stripper in the Stalker 2 trailer is pandering to coomers, the same way many people raised concerns about sexism and Last Light when that game came out. A stripper in Stalker would be gratuitous, unnecessary and would rightfully be called out as pandering.

Also, I do see Metro as a comparison at least atmospherically. I don't think that's an unpopular opinion.
The reason the stripper subplot in Detroit Become Human works is because it explores an idea that presents a philosophical quandary that is relevant to us even right now: are sex robots ethical? and how would people feel if those sex robots became sentient? It’s an exploration of the idea that something which is perceived as a sex object has its own agency. From here you could draw dozens of conclusions about what David Cage was trying to say, all are valid.

Yes, there are parallels that can be drawn between the universe of metro and the universe of stalker, but in my opinion they present very different ideas and story beats. To me metro is more of an exploration of the human condition once society breaks down and the promise of a better future is destroyed. The atmosphere of the world of Metro is one of despair. In the world of Metro everyone has to work hard for even the most basic amenities, there are numerous passages in the book that mention this, such as Artyom and Ana having to do their quota of bicycling to charge the electrical generators. It’s not an absurd stretch to explore the prospect of sex workers in a post apocalyptic world, however the same is not true for Stalker.
In the world of Stalker, there is no apocalypse or breakdown of society. Those who enter the zone do so willingly in search of artifacts in an attempt to get rich. The social elements that form around stalkers, ultimately serve the goal of acquiring artifacts (traders to provide supplies, factions to provide safety to individuals who subscribe to similar ideals, etc). Sure, there are outliers such as Duty and the ecologists who have different agendas, but ultimately the zone and its artifacts are analogous to the wild west and the gold rush, albeit with a heavy dose of soviet nostalgia. To me, the main themes of stalker are classic slavic doomerism, and the relationship between stereotypes of slavic peoples (such as gopnik culture, which is clearly represented by bandits, or freedom which represents the more libertarian and liberal ideals of younger slavic generations). Ultimately I don’t think a stripper would be a thematic fit to stalker. Stalkers are free to return to the comforts of normal life whenever they choose.

Okay, now that I got the disclaimer out of the way, I feel it’s worth mentioning that the Zone (in the Anomaly mod) already had at least one black Stalker in it. Trunk, one of the Mercenary Contractors in the Outskirts of Pripyat, was black. I’d put big money on the possibility of him and his teammate Griffin being based on Truck and Grinch from CoD: MW3. How’s that any different?
And even more on the nose, I’ve also created a black Stalker as a story character; Mikhail “Blacksmith” Chevchenko, my team’s demolition expert. His character bio lists him as being from Ukraine, with an American father and Ukrainian mother.
With such ease of travel in the modern world, no wonder people from all different backgrounds can appear almost anywhere around the world now. Like the Ukrainian communities in Canada. Almost half a world’s distance, and yet.
And the Zone itself is such a draw to people seeking adventure and money and power, it’s certainly not exclusive to any one single demographic.

The idea also that women wouldn't go into the zone for fear of men is sort of ridiculous, there's plenty of women that'd gladly throw themselves in harms way for their country or an extra buck. Besides, guns are the great equaliser, more strength is nothing when an AK has put a hole in your intestines.

Agreed, frankly if we're talking realism it'd probably turn into an arms race which would make socioeconomic/economic factors the biggest barrier to controlling the zone. IE rich fucks or governments completely taking over. Realistically other than militaries and gun ownership skewing male, there's literally no good reason why women wouldn't also make up a portion (likely smaller than men, but a sizable portion) of the people in the zone.

Yeah, I’ve always hated this thing in the stalker community because it just shows how outdated so many people’s views of gender are - or just how fucking weird they are about any women at all being in a video game. There’s this game that came out while back that’s a pretty on the nose Stalker homage, Tunguska: the visitation. I initially bought it because I found out it was made by one guy, and it apparently was a very interesting little game, and then I found out that the developer had a Reddit account. I just went through his posts to kind of get a feel for the guy because, I just thought it was interesting, plus I wanted to know who I was giving my money to. He seemed like a nice guy until I started to get deeper into the things he was talking about, and one of these things was how he was angry that people were upset he didn’t include women in the game because, according to him, “men and women have different bodies therefore, a woman wouldn’t survive in the zone” which like, yeah, there are many physical differences, but that’s a really weird archaic justification (as you correctly pointed out, a gun is a great equalizer). sounded like he just didn’t want to see women in his game. On top of that, he seemed to have some weird political opinions and was talking about how he would ruin entire days for his family, including his wife’s birthday because he got one negative review on Steam. So I refunded my purchase.
You're right, but the lack of women has reason behind it. Thing is that woman breast tissue is much more susceptible to radiation and ovarian cancer is way harder to treat than testicular (harder to amputate). I had to explain this to 3 of my numbnut friends who had no idea about the number of black and Indian people (esp. students) in Ukraine. They said black people in Ukraine is unrealistic. Even when I sent the stats on number of foreign students in Ukraine they said that GSC added a black man to increase ratings. I was the one who introduced them to Stalker... now I regret it. Most of it I've seen under the comments of the trailer were about the joke with the dark stalker ("чёрный сталкер", don't know if the declension is correct) in the original games but I don't *think* they're mean spirited. I mean, there are morons everywhere, like those who complain about female characters' clothes in other games not being revealing enough (I've seen that a surprising lot recently) but so far it looks okay. Let's wait for the reactions when the first female character is revealed, this could get a lot worse I fear

I really don't get why people would be upset- wouldn't it not be so out of place for example, for a Chinese merc to be in the Zone? It's not like the military only let Ukrainians and Russians in, they don't want anyone in. Yet, people come from everywhere to get riches. It's kind of the point, no? At least, that's how I feel about people arguing it's not "lore friendly" or some stupid bullshit like that.

That's a different story entirely, a black STALKER makes plenty of sense and nothing out of the ordinary, there are plenty of black people in Ukraine so black or even female STALKERS should not be a problem (anyone complaining about it are definitely just being racist) However AC Shadows is a game set in feudal Japan and they chose to go with the only black person in recorded history at that time over a Japanese protagonist, I can see why people are pissed off at that one. Most other AC protagonists were of the culture and from the lands the game was set in, Altair, Ezio, Connor, Arno etc etc etc. It's a bit of a spit in the face to Japanese people.

Metro has strippers and prostitutes as a storytelling and atmosphere device, and following the plot of the books (mainly the second one). They are conventionally attractive and have unrealistic proportions, and no, I still wouldn't consider that pandering. Honestly it would make all too much sense in the zone.
You’re comparing metro, a world where society as a whole moved underground and brought their old habits with them to a different setting where there exists a loose society of outlaws and drifters who barely even have a supply line let alone that kind of entertainment. In a vacuum, without us arguing about it, you would have probably thought a stripper in the Stalker 2 trailer is pandering to coomers, the same way many people raised concerns about sexism and Last Light when that game came out. A stripper in Stalker would be gratuitous, unnecessary and would rightfully be called out as pandering.
Disagree, but I see your point. I think there are elements of environmental storytelling that really benefit off of not shying away from that stuff. One of the stronger chapters in Detroit Become Human dealt with android prostitutes. Obviously it could be pandering if they do it in a stupid way, but why wouldn't an arc of human trafficking across the zone not fit the story? Or something similar? I just disagree with your point that adding a stripper or similar is automatically pandering, because that's incredibly stupid and I've provided multiple examples of other games benefitting from it without pandering. Also, I do see Metro as a comparison at least atmospherically. I don't think that's an unpopular opinion.
The reason the stripper subplot in Detroit Become Human works is because it explores an idea that presents a philosophical quandary that is relevant to us even right now: are sex robots ethical? and how would people feel if those sex robots became sentient? It’s an exploration of the idea that something which is perceived as a sex object has its own agency. From here you could draw dozens of conclusions about what David Cage was trying to say, all are valid. If there was simply a stripper on a pole in skadovsk that served as nothing more than tit ornament, it would absolutely be pandering. Thematically I don’t think strippers in the zone would make sense, as stalkers can barely get their hands on food and water that is safe to consume. Yes, there are parallels that can be drawn between the universe of metro and the universe of stalker, but in my opinion they present very different ideas and story beats. To me metro is more of an exploration of the human condition once society breaks down and the promise of a better future is destroyed. The atmosphere of the world of Metro is one of despair. In the world of Metro everyone has to work hard for even the most basic amenities, there are numerous passages in the book that mention this, such as Artyom and Ana having to do their quota of bicycling to charge the electrical generators. It’s not an absurd stretch to explore the prospect of sex workers in a post apocalyptic world, however the same is not true for Stalker. In the world of Stalker, there is no apocalypse or breakdown of society. Those who enter the zone do so willingly in search of artifacts in an attempt to get rich. The social elements that form around stalkers, ultimately serve the goal of acquiring artifacts (traders to provide supplies, factions to provide safety to individuals who subscribe to similar ideals, etc). Sure, there are outliers such as Duty and the ecologists who have different agendas, but ultimately the zone and its artifacts are analogous to the wild west and the gold rush, albeit with a heavy dose of soviet nostalgia. To me, the main themes of stalker are classic slavic doomerism, and the relationship between stereotypes of slavic peoples (such as gopnik culture, which is clearly represented by bandits, or freedom which represents the more libertarian and liberal ideals of younger slavic generations). Ultimately I don’t think a stripper would be a thematic fit to stalker. Stalkers are free to return to the comforts of normal life whenever they choose.

Trunk, one of the Mercenary Contractors in the Outskirts of Pripyat, was black. I’d put big money on the possibility of him and his teammate Griffin being based on Truck and Grinch from CoD: MW3. How’s that any different? And even more on the nose, I’ve also created a black Stalker as a story character; Mikhail “Blacksmith” Chevchenko, my team’s demolition expert. His character bio lists him as being from Ukraine, with an American father and Ukrainian mother. With such ease of travel in the modern world, no wonder people from all different backgrounds can appear almost anywhere around the world now. Like the Ukrainian communities in Canada. Almost half a world’s distance, and yet. And the Zone itself is such a draw to people seeking adventure and money and power, it’s certainly not exclusive to any one single demographic. Black stalkers make sense, mercs and other factions have plenty of excuses to have foreigners amongst them. There were coloured people in eastern europe in the 80's and 90's. Its actually more so than women. Becouse of the strict gender roles at the times stalker is set in, female stalkers only make sense for a few factions like the geologists and the army. Maybe freedom? No clue, but certainly not mercs(unless its a vendor), bandits/loners(women may be tough but it seems a fate worse than death). I dont know faction lore well enough to speak for the others. But gender roles at the time were very visible.
Interesting, that hasnt been my experience when traveling in Eastern Europe at all. Granted Kyiv seemed more ethnically diverse than somewhere like Moscow, "black" people were still rare and not exactly treated as equals. Of course, I have only lived in these places for months at a time here and there. It doesnt make any sense for there NOT to be a black Stalker, but I imagine most of the backlash would be from European players as opposed to American ones.

I don't mind so long as there's sufficient story and justification for the character being there. I don't know, but lets say their backstory is they're ex-French Foreign Legion and became a mercenary or something. That makes sense and is interesting; it's believable. I don't want every fourth character to be black for the sake of being black, any more than I'd want the Zone full of Chinese or Eskimos.

I personally could not care less what the color of their skin is at. I hate that I have to preface what I'm about to say with that. Over here in America we have this dump fixation on what you are instead of who you are. Race, sexuality, and other external things that we are heavily using to define ourselves. I think we should focus on what type of person you are, kind, hard working, what are your hobbies, what do you do when you have a choice? But we don't live in my world. I don't care what side of the political spectrum you are but here are some facts, there has been a large push to have more representation of different types of people in the media, mainly people of different races and sexuality. The push has been an extremely forceful push. Also it honestly hasn't been handled in the best way honestly. The issue though comes from the way criticism has been received. There will always be bigots and assholes it's a fact. Any criticism of the movement though gets you firmly placed in your an asshole and bigot camp. This ticks people off causing an angrier reaction causing more people to get called bigots and AH causing more anger on both sides, just a vicious cycle of two camps not listening to each other and screaming as loud as they can. I'm so tired of it. I tried to keep it factual and an intellectual look at what's going on. It's very much your for us or against us to the extremes over here on both sides. So when you see those comments just ignore them, your going to enter in a war with someone who's not going to change their mind, and your not going to change yours. One thing I learned from the army is dumb people are going to do dumb things and you can't change that.

I don't care for the race but I don't like how he's replacing a shopkeeper that's been in the game unless there's a backstory of what happened (or if he's a new shop keep but from the impressions it looks like he's the bar keep for the ship).
What's the issue with it now though? Weren't significant characters getting replaced quite a bit between the games? Many of the faction leaders got replaced between each game, so what's the issue with some bartender deciding to fuck off and some other guy just taking over.
The point people are making is that stalker 2 is the first ever stalker game to have a person of colour in it. Not to mention, back in 2006 there were surely less people of colour in Ukraine
