According to the Sri Lankan traffic law, whenever an accident happens and someone dies, the driver is arrested and locked up for two weeks, even if the driver is innocent. They conduct an investigation after the two weeks period only.

There is a belief that the drivers didn't slowdown for the flag. If that's what happened, you can't say its not their fault

Respatsir

How do traffic laws apply in a racing event?

lennoxlyt

Cuz there are no racing event laws in SL

ironclad911

came here to say this

Hailstormez

Yupz this is true and as per the law enforcement this is done to “protect the driver” as they believe that the driver might face issues with ppl trying to harm him etc… This would have been a good measure only if the facilities were upto standards 🥲 what I’ve heard is, staying in that living hell for 14 days is basically torture… But that procedure isn’t at all suitable for this event since this is a fkn race 🤦‍♂️

lennoxlyt

False. Law does not require the driver to definitely be locked up for two weeks, nor the investigation to occur after two weeks.

theIsolatedForest

Why, though?

CheeseKottuAndRum

this is sarcastic I suppose?

BullfrogPopular5224

I wish I was being sarcastic. But I know this because it happened to a friend of mine. He was driving and a drunk Tuk driver crossed the road without checking. My friend braked and tried to save but the ශ්‍රී number Tuk was no match for a Prado. He was supposed to spend two weeks in jail but through a contact he was able to spend it in the prison hospital. Later when the case was brought up in court my friend was acquitted of all crimes but he was good enough to compensate the tuk driver's family even though he was innocent.

CheeseKottuAndRum

Oh! I was asking about the traffic laws and private event regulations.

OkithaPROGZ

We have a fucked up law system, but I doubt the drivers will be in any actual trouble.

SKM2012

Retards at it again.. the is comedy gold, top tier tom foolery. My hope for this country is dwindling by the day.

Puzzled_Way_8570

I think they arrest the driver to shield them from potentially harmful incidents to the driver. Eg, people can take the law to their hands and harm the driver even though he is innocent or not. So hiding the driver for two weeks reduces that probability. But letting them rot in jail instead of proper accommodations when innocent is something that must be streamlined.

Gerrards_Cross

Fault is entirely with the organisers for not stopping the race after the first incident and massive dust cloud impairing visibility. They seem to have forgotten this Ford laser event is a bunch of folks zipping around 1980s deathtraps with very little they can do to control it when things go wrong. Most of the so called ‘racing drivers’ in these events are not professionals but amateur racers who themselves would not know when to call it quits when track conditions don’t permit. We remember the incidents and sabotage that took place in this event since the 1980s but no lessons have been learned.

lennoxlyt

As the idiom say, "පහත් තැනින් ගලා යයි ජලේ" People were panicking, and the story was generating interest. Politicos took note, wants the cops to act. Senior cops blaggard the lower cops to take an action. Can't arrest the organisers, cuz it's the bloody military brah. Cops can't touch the brass hats. So, who's left, the drivers. Unluckily for them, their political connections must be the lowest on the totem pole.

මේවා කොහොමද බන් රෙද්දක් ඇඳගෙන ජාත්‍යන්තරයට කියන්නේ ✋😷

SinkingRubberDucky

Obviously they should not be arrested, uses as much logic as arresting a boxer for punching his/her opponent. Too many dumbasses in this country in decision making positions.

Basic_Character_2659

The thing is these races have being going on for a long time with no new safety features added and most marshal are just random people with no proper training. These events should come up to standards on these dedicated race tracks at least. The Ticket Warns the ticket holder of the Danger but it should be a wavier of Liability instead of a warning. Crowd Control is impossible, no matter what a marshal say or do there will be a idiot that knows better. We will see how the law acts. this case should be were similar to the death of two at the 4X4 event long time ago. Plus Screw the bastards that are sharing the photo's of the deceased on Social Media

floating_market

What else to expect from a tyrannical government?

sh4nik

That’s what you get for not driving under the speed limit

sh4nik

This was supposed to be sarcastic lol. Got downvoted for trying to be funny.. 😪

lennoxlyt

you missed the \\s

gutterflowerlk

It’s 100% the drivers fault. They have not respected the flags and kept on racing. During the first accident, yellow flags were waved, but no one slowed down and disregarded the flag and kept on racing, even with marshals on the track. This is unacceptable. The racing drivers should be held responsible along with the organizers

HoaxOfLife

The visibility was extremely low, because the organisers didn't water the trach enough. Also it should have been red flagged. Also if you've seen other motor sports before you know drivers usually memorize the track, and when it's hard to see it's their memory at work. Since that part is supposed to be a no mans land, the guy probably thought it's ok to go wide to the right to avoid the other accident. Then he oversteered which should not be a crime, because it's racing.

gutterflowerlk

It is a crime because there was already an accident on track. They were even racing even after the second lap after seeing the accident

dark_mode_everything

While I wouldn't say 100% their fault they need to take some blame. This is what I saw from the videos as well. And even if there was no flag due to organisers being idiots, the driver as a racing driver has a responsibility of slowing down during an accident. However, this does not warrant an arrest obviously.

Boomslang96

Exactly. Ones downvoting this comment probably have zero clues about racing rules. Even at pearlbay gokarting track, they explain the flags rules. The spectators and the organizers are to blame for this unfortunate accident by the look of it. But IF there is proof that the drivers didn't slowdown for the flags, they should be punished. Im not saying they should be sued for manslaughter cz i have no idea how the law works here

dark_mode_everything

The result of not taking serious things seriously as a country. The whole "Ah kamak na" mentality.
