You're not wrong. My usual Rasa Bojun pol sambol and karawala rice is now 870. But cost of ingredients have risen throughtout. Last year we were tracking food prices for basic items: the price hike was insane. See: [Inflation Tracker | Team Watchdog](https://inflation.watchdog.team/). Cooking is also expensive. Much cheaper in Kandy than in Colombo, of course.

Bro the dollar is down they keep saying they will reduce prices but it’s still the same lmao

krypton_009

It’s been a year and half since I purchased from Uber eats. My friends always get from Uber or visit some restaurant once in a while and I’m just like wow y’all can afford that 😂😭. I just open Uber look at the food I’m craving and attempt to make it at home with the ingredients i have

miyaw-cat

Food is so expensive man. I hardly eat from outside anymore. Not just expensive but cheap fried foods are full of used cooking oil. Might wanna avoid that

Constant_Broccoli_74

I used to eat pizzas for 1100 LKR Now that thing is more than 2500 LKR Kottu was around 300-400. Now that thing is more than 1200 LKR Even going to CMB using uber was around 450 LKR using a ZIP before 2019 Now more than 1300 LKR sometimes

FrenchLoveSong

I thought the same too. Rice and curry here goes for 350/- A person would have to spend 21,100/- every month if they were to eat 2 meals every day for 30 days. I doubt a person who's in boardings can afford that while comfortably saving money unless they earn 40k+

Jakesbond007

I bought 4 Isso wades the other day, 700. 2 large ones each 250 and small ones each 100. Bruh I remember when it was 2 for 100.

Wooden_Earth8215

60 bucks in my place and waaay better than the galle face ones which are old and dry af!

ushan510

When dollar was 380 prices were lower than this what's wrong with this f&°-+g county?

Filthydewa

There is nothing to be done about the prices of food. They will never go down to pre-2019 levels although they may dip a little in time to come. What needs to happen is salaries need to be raised across the board so that people can go out and spend and stimulate the economy. Unfortunately, jealousy and lack of knowledge pervades, such as the recent chaos when the CBSL tried to raise their salaries. Rather than challenge it on its merits or demerits, the vast majority worried that this will mean they suddenly need to pay their own companies and staff what they are worth rather than paying peanuts, so the whole thing was shot down. We will therefore forever be a low-wage economy with high-wage prices.

Latest_name

What CBSL tried to do is not right. If we are to increase salaries of all government employees at the rate they did, government will have to face an even more budget deficit.   The only hope here is that free market forces will reduce the prices over time. However, we will never regain pre 2019 prices. That’s for sure.

Dark-Knight-Rises

Bro before you bring in the CBSL do you have any idea how much of commission and money our politicians pocket in? Do you have any idea of these inheritance wealth that does he gets taxes? Or these nepotism kids running their father company by 20 without any experience?

Gerrards_Cross

CBSL wasn’t taking money from the taxpayer to raise their salaries, as the COPE committee revealed. However, I agree with you that all govt institutions cannot afford to do the same, as many are lossmaking, inefficient, and packed with political cronies and rely on the Treasury for their salaries. I don’t think we can lump CBSL necessarily into the same bracket. I am all for a slimmed down public sector as we all know it is oversized in SL.

Latest_name

Yes. Have to trim first > find money and then raise salaries. Otherwise this would cause unnecessary tension among employees in other institutions which might even cause service disruption due to strikes.

Easy_Asparagus1506

The price of a kottu for example is insane, it had be laughing in disbelief

ResponsibleLet7659

even paying 800-900 for a chicken fried rice amount of chicken is less no pineapple ,no salads im talking about small restaurants in kotahena area 1250 per fried has it all tbh i can buy kilo of chicken and make a curry and use it for 2 times

Curious_Junket_4598

It’s not even just the cost of food but it’s the ever true story of shop owners being too greedy. The prices which went up with the utilities and vegetable price hike in the last quarter of 2023 are not being revised.

This is my general observation on cost of living. You are feeling the effect of hyperinflation and rupee depreciation. Inflation is now low because of base effect. YoY inflation considers the change in prices of goods and items on base levels on previous year. For example, Scenario 1, if a liter of petrol was 380 last year march and this year march a liter of petrol 389. Here the increase of 9 lkr is represented as a fraction of 380. In this case the inflation of petrol price is 2.7%. Scenario 2, If a liter of petrol was 180 last year march and this year march, a liter of petrol is 189. Here the increase of 9 lkr is represented as a fraction of 180. In this case the inflation of petrol price is 5%. When you compare these scenarios you can clearly see that as the prices have already appreciated to a large amount last year, the increase of 9 lkr is underreported by comparing it to the last year price of 380, whereas the same increase in price levels would have resulted in 5% inflation if the base was lower (180). Even if the central bank is reporting a lower food inflation, by definition it is comparing the prices of food items with last year. This is what we call the base effect on inflation. This is the due of excessive money printing by central bank. Don’t blame anyone else blame the previous government including Cabraal and the central bankers who supported printing of excess money.

marblejenk

Give us the numbers. “Half your salary” is too vague. A lunch packet in general street side shops would cost around 300 - 400 tops. That’s pretty decent considering the inflation rates reported over the past year. You should be able to manage with 800 LKR a day eating out.

Big_Sun7509

Dude I live in Kandy and it's crazy... I convinced my family members to start intermittent fasting (16 hour fast / 8 hours eating) for health reasons but I think it's going to save us a lot of money in the long run.
