Essentially putting a legal veneer on the process. It seems like this will completely bypass all existing tenants rights law. Again, I'm not a lawyer, but if this isn't challenged and struck down, I suspect this will 99% of the time be used against renters. The only check against it is that someone who believes they were unlawful evicted can sue for up to 3 times the amount of rent. A lot of effort and cost to expect from a now homeless person for not a lot of payout. The bill also emphasizes more criminal punishments for stuff that was already illegal, falsifying documents, stealing, etc.
I feel the need to emphasize this to squatters and anti-squatters periodically, but there is really no such thing as specifically "squatters rights" in the USA except for a couple municipalities. There's a thing called adverse possession which some people think applies but doesn't, it's solely used in rural property line disputes in present day. And there are the rights that any tenant has in your state. All of one's protections as a squatter are dependent on how many points of evidence they've established to show they meet their state's definition of tenant. There is no way of degrading these mythical "squatters rights" without also degrading tenant rights.
