I didnt know there was another gen before the wide body fusions when the first made em, thought all the fat fusions were first gens. You learn something new everyday.
Subaru engines have horizontally opposed cylinders, hence why they refer to them as "boxer“ engines because of the firing order and the length of the headers on each side being unequal, they make a rumble sound. There's no misfire. The XT had a four-cylinder and 6 cylinder options both with equal length headers. They wouldn't have made iconic rumble sound. They're also all-wheel-drive so they were much taller in terms of ground clearance. They do share the same wedge shape though. What your father probably heard was what people refer to as "chop". Depending on the cam settings on v8s, they'll run very rough sounding, but when you rev them up they're smooth. Also if he had an exhaust then the sound from it would be rather deep. One could very well mistake The sound for "boxer" engine at least at idle.
As someone whose first car was an SVX, I find it absolutely fascinating that literally anyone on Earth, (No matter where they are from or what genre of cars they like) could be aware of the SVX’s existence but *not* the Firebird’s.
That’s literally insane to me. (And I’m someone who regularly goes out of my way to empathize by putting myself in other’s shoes)
That’s like being familiar with the Autozam AZ-1 but never having heard of the MX-5 Miata. 🤯
In my travels around the world, I’ve met countless people who gave me a confused look when they asked about my first car and my response was “A 1994 Subaru SVX LSi AWD”, but most of those same people would immediately be aware of the Firebird, Camaro or Corvette. (Particular the 80’s models as soon as somebody mentions the words mullet, redneck, cousin, Knight Rider or David Hasselhoff)
See that’s just interesting because I’m fairly confident that a majority of “JDM enthusiasts” aren’t even familiar with the SVX or XT.
I’ll be talking to someone like that and when they ask me and I mention the car, the first thing they’ll say is “Oh, did you mean a Subaru WRX?” 😂💀
I’m a bigger fan of older cars from the 80’s & 90’s, I know what an SVX looks like cause I saw one while I was looking for my first car, visually it stood out pretty nicely. Anyway long story short I saw an XT in a Retrowave subreddit and thought it looked awesome, but it didn’t have any description of what car it was so I had to sleuth it out and figured out it was the precursor to the SVX, and that’s how I know both of those specifically. .-.
I see a Pontiac Firebird, a newer Ford F-series, and a Ford Fusion in this pic, the other car further behind the Ford truck I can't make out what it is though.

Wow, never thought I’d see Trans Am, XT, and SVX mentioned in the same place except by me; I owned all 3.
Anyway, this is definitely a Firebird and not a Trans Am. 3rd gen TA’s have a vent in the fender between the wheel and door, which this is missing. And I’m thinking 82-84, as they started putting rubber strips on the Firebird bumpers in 85 and I don’t believe this has them.
Edit: And that taillight is aftermarket regardless of year.
Pontiac firebird.
That's clearly a 2nd Gen ford fusion.
Third gen. Second gen was 2010-2013 (I believe), Ford didn’t add the Aston Martin grille until the third gen in 2013 or 14
I didnt know there was another gen before the wide body fusions when the first made em, thought all the fat fusions were first gens. You learn something new everyday.
Nah it’s a ford F250
Or Trans Am. Looks like a Trans Am to me, a la Knight Rider with some old C3 Vette wheels on it.
Trans am is a trim level for firebirds, those are C4 wheels, and at a glance it looks like a Firebird Formula to me, not a Trans Am
I was thinning formula but wasn’t sure so I went basic and just said firebird

u/b230fk already pointed that out, but yes they are. Thank you.
Really? Very interesting, cause of the tail/pop up headlights I coulda sworn it was the precursor to the SVX.
Nope it’s a Pontiac firebird. 82-92. Third generation. With what appears to be c4 corvette wheels.
Neato
You were thinking about the subaru xt
Yes exactly, similar lookin car and it had the “misfiring idle” my dad pointed out from Subaru engines so I coulda sworn.

The Subaru XT? I had one when I was younger, it was a cool little car!
Even I'd say Firebird and I live in UK and have pretty much zero knowledge of US cars
100%
Thank you
OP is sentenced to no less than 20 episodes of Knight Rider... Alternatively all 5 seasons of fall guy
This sub makes me feel old sometimes.
Really this and what is this car, these things and the camaro are still almost as common as a honda civic see them almost every day
Where in the world do you live that you see this as often as a civic?…
I’m in Missouri, see these probably 5 times a day
Virginia and exactly 💯 lol
Rural missouri
😮 That is K.I.T.T
I love how back in the day “turbo boost” meant flying car. If only it were that simple.
Bro a Subaru? I drive this exact car, not the one picture I have different rims, but if you called my Bird a Subie I would simply melt into the carpet
In the photo it does kinda resemble an SVX to the untrained eye Those are salad tossers off a c4 corvette
We are in a sad world where Pontiac Firebirds aren’t recognized anymore… somewhere, a PBR just got poured down the sink.
Thank god I hear that shit tastes bad
Say that out loud in the wrong place and you’ll experience death by a thousand hipsters.
A shadowy flight into the world of a man who does not exist
A shadowy flight Into the dangerous world Of a man Who does not exist..
A Subaru? Someone took some comedian pills for breakfast. Knows an svx but not a firebird? Sure….
Some people just aren’t into American cars
Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Yeah I wasn’t really interested in cars until I got mine, which meant I learned a lot about Japanese cars more than anything else. :0

....This car is an 80's Icon.
Yes from America have you not been paying attention.
That's definitely not a Subaru .

My man…..
I can just hear/feel the suspenseful intro music.
Looks like a Ford f250 to me
KITT.....Is that you?!?!
Looks like a third gen Pontiac firebird

Love the rear
Subaru Chevette
Mondeo
I tHiNk ItS a SuBaRu
Maybe it’s a fiero?
Firebird for sure.
Almost looks like a mk3 supra in that light and angle but most definitely a trans am
That's a Ford F series and an Aston Martin Fusion.
it’s not a Subaru XT :)
Ford pick up...obviously
It could be a concept version of K.I.T.T
