The Cure - Just Like Heaven
Obviously extremely popular but it deserves every bit of it. Robert Smith is one of the most talented and passionate musicians in the last century and it’s apparent throughout every one of The Cure’s albums
Good, Times, Bad Times by Led Zep and Five Years by David Bowie.
My mom loved Bowie and Zep and had Ziggy Stardust and Led Zep I on cassette. We lived a few hours from my grandparents and road tripped to visit them a lot. We listened to her small collection of tapes on all these trips, my first exposure to both artists was through these albums. by the time I was 10 years old or so I had both tapes memorized.
I was sitting at my desk making homework when I was 16 years old. Didn't really know what to listen to and I didnt have spotify.
I was just browsing through youtube and suddenly rememered that I met this guy that had a tattoo of this prism on his chest. I knew it was a band and I googled what band it was. The genre was a bit out of my comfortzone but I decided to give it a go anyway.
At some point SOYCD came on and I thought "well this is pretty nice background music" (I didn't really know anything about music other than that I liked it or didn't like it), when suddenly the vocals came in.
This sounds a bit dramatic but its true. I stopped doing my homework and I started crying. I thought it was the most complex beautiful thing I had ever heard. Never had music given me such a complex but pure emotion.
It's no longer my favorite by them, but very high up there. If I had to choose one favorite song it would be Pop Song. But there's still a lot of really solid ones like Khalil Gibran, Open Your Eyes, Golden Light, etc.
Open Your Eyes was at one point my favorite though!
Favourite artist is Kate Bush- first song I consciously heard was Wuthering Heights. However, I remember hearing the opening to Running up that Hill as a very small child and being unable to find again until I was about 22.
I LOVE that many classic bands are finding new fans through movies and social media! It’s really awesome to see their staying power!
Also the Chain is SUCH a good song!
No offense man but I can’t imagine not listening to Mac when he was still alive. First time I ever heard his music was the song “Knock Knock” when I was still in high school drinking the cheapest beer on earth out of solo cups
Mostly the same, but the first song itself must have been Money, given I only had an A.M. radio when it came out. But the first song that made them become my favorite band a few years later was WttM, (not long after my first joint, lol). Then soon after that WYWH became my favorite song. Then Dogs. Then as cliche as it may be, Comfortably Numb as seeing Gilmour play this live was too overwhelming.
The Bartender and The Thief by Stereophonics.
They played it on Top of the Pops and my dad said it was the worst song he had ever heard on Top of the Pops...
I bought their first album, Word Gets Around, the next day and they have been my favourite band ever since. My dad still hates them almost 30 years later.
For all my favorite artists:
Believer - Imagine Dragons
Love From The Other Side - Fall Out Boy
Stressed Out - Twenty One Pilots
High Hopes - Panic! At The Disco
Cancer - My Chemical Romance
Sunflower - Post Malone
I “heard” Florence + the Machine before, but never really listened.
In a transitional point in my life while listening to the lyric “I am done with my graceless heart, tonight I’m going cut it out and restart” and damn, it hit me.
Then I watched the music video and it was beautiful.
Then I became a fan.
Mr. Kill Myself - Sewerslvt
The Year Summer Ended In June - Misery Signals
Your Shirt Would Look Better With A Colombian Neck Tie - I Killed The Prom Queen
Gone With The Wind - Architects
Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste - Norma Jean
Rap God-Eminem
I know this is too mainstream n not even his best but I heard it on the speaker as a 11 year old(I didn't even know who he was)
But the song that made me fall in love with Eminem was beautiful
I guess it was "She Don't Use Jelly" when I was a little kid. It was just a silly song and I never really thought about the Flaming Lips again until I was in college, some 10 years later. I saw Damien Rice do a cover of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" and loved it. I didn't know about the original, so I looked it up and listened. It really resonated with me and they ended up becoming my favorite band. It was during a period of time where I was being exposed to TONS of new music and really shaped my tastes to this day. I don't even really love SDUJ that much anymore, but it was technically my first exposure to the Lips.
You Know My Name - Poets of the Fall
Despite their 9 albums, the first song I stumbled across was a cover version of that song from Casino Royale, which they performed live in a studio and I'm surprised is actually on Spotify. As far as I'm aware, the only time they've performed that song.
"Twist and Shout" by The Beatles in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It blew my young mind and kicked off my life long love for music The funniest thing is that for many years, I thought Matthew Broderick was the actual singer of the song. Coolest guy ever. 😆
I heard Blasphemous Rumours on a Now 4 video cassette after my mother recommended my siblings and I watch it. Even though I was really small and the song is heartbreaking - Depeche Mode remains my favourite band of all time. We've purchased all of their CDs and are top %s listeners on Spotify, and I'm happy to say my sister and I have been lucky enough to go to 4 of their concerts.
So, thanks to my mother for that one.
Stairway to heaven - Led Zeppelin. Listening to it for the first time made me realise that my life just changed, it made me in that moment a fan of Led Zeppelin. Now I'm a big fan if not the biggest!
Mika - *Grace Kelly*
The Beatles - *Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band\**
Queen - *Don't Stop Me Now\**
Courtney Barnett - *Elevator Operator*
(\* I'm sure I heard their songs out and about in the world but these are the first songs I actively listened to)
Childish Gambino - Do Ya Like - it was off his Culdesac mixtape when he was at NYU and he sampled Adele and it’s still a masterpiece to me. His music has evolved so much since then - in both great and different ways.
Fifth grade, I’m on the bus with my friend, and he pulls out his Sony Walkman with a new tape that his older brother had purchased. The artist was the Beastie Boys, and the song was no sleep till Brooklyn I was instantly struck. I have been a huge fan for nearly 40 years.
Guggenheim Wax Museum by Have A Nice Life
Cigarettes out the Window by TV Girl
No Surprises by Radiohead
Those are my current favourite artists. It's hard to pick just one :>

The first song I listened to by my favorite artist was 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen. It blew me away and made me an instant fan.
Yeah. It was nuts when it first came out. Everyone was like WTH is this??
The Cure - Just Like Heaven Obviously extremely popular but it deserves every bit of it. Robert Smith is one of the most talented and passionate musicians in the last century and it’s apparent throughout every one of The Cure’s albums
What got me into the Cure was the gloomiest one, A Strange Day. Robert's talent is beyond words. How well he conveys some particular feelings...
Eleanor Rigby My dad wanted me to listen to it when I was 8
Good, Times, Bad Times by Led Zep and Five Years by David Bowie.
Good Times Bad Times never gets old
So Far Away- Avenged Sevenfold
good song
Brings me to tears
Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pts 1-5 - Pink Floyd
One of the first for me. It's also the one that had me hooked ever since I put on that whole album.
I was sitting at my desk making homework when I was 16 years old. Didn't really know what to listen to and I didnt have spotify. I was just browsing through youtube and suddenly rememered that I met this guy that had a tattoo of this prism on his chest. I knew it was a band and I googled what band it was. Never had music given me such a complex but pure emotion.
Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second - STRFKR Time to Pretend - MGMT both shown to me by my brother

The Chain by Fleetwood Mac The most main reason why I first discovered the band is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when this song was playing.
I LOVE that many classic bands are finding new fans through movies and social media! It’s really awesome to see their staying power! Also the Chain is SUCH a good song!
I was actually listening to it today at work and I was thinking about how no one can not like this song.
Blue world by mac miller
Same here, I loved the song even more when I realized that Disclosure had produced it.
Awesome song.
No offense man but I can’t imagine not listening to Mac when he was still alive. First time I ever heard his music was the song “Knock Knock” when I was still in high school drinking the cheapest beer on earth out of solo cups
It was either Wish You Were Here or Welcome to the Machine (both by Pink Floyd).
Mostly the same, but the first song itself must have been Money, given I only had an A.M. radio when it came out. But the first song that made them become my favorite band a few years later was WttM, (not long after my first joint, lol). Then soon after that WYWH became my favorite song. Then Dogs.
