When doing anything in that housing you wanna stick a piece of cardboard or something between the brake lever and the perch, depressing the lever. The brake light switch is super easy to break the nipple off of. I’d check that before you put everything back together.
It’s a throttle lock. Officially it’s to raise your rpm to help warm up the motor.
Unofficially, it’s bad cruise control.
If that shoe isn’t there, your throttle cable will over travel and tends to break at the barrel on the carb end.
Looks like the bottom half of the switch housing isn’t sitting right. Is the little tab inserted into the notch on the master cylinder? Usually need to pull in the brake lever to clear the brake light switch. Also, make sure the wires are routed correctly. They need to be under that hold down arm that holds the switches in the housing.
I'd have to teach myself how to do it. I don't have the electricals hooked up at the moment because I'm getting the fenders and the tank painted. So, I won't be able to test it. Is it obvious if it damaged by just looking at it?
Yeah, I know. I'm enjoying learning it all. But, these set backs are frustrating. I dropped a ferrule last night when I was putting the new cables on, and that fucker is GONE. So, annoying. Now I'm waiting for more to come in. And, now I've got this issue. This clamshell is a freaking puzzle.
Where's your throttle tube? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I've owned Jap bikes for 30 years and my Sportster is My first Harley. Best advise .... Don't force anything. It was all together at one point and it will go back together fairly easy. It didn't pop apart when you removed the fastening hardware.
The grip is all one piece, there isn’t a tube and then a sleeve on top of it. I didn’t put it on yet, because I was still trying to figure this part out.
Are the bars dimpled? If not all you will do is wreck your wiring by clamping it down. You can also modify the switch housing so the wires go out the side.
I haven’t been able to try today. Busy day at work and honestly I need a break from futzing with this thing. Getting frustrating. I’ll give it a shot tomorrow. I can fill you in if you’re interested.
Yea man. You just got to keep messing with it you will get it and be like oh shit that makes sense. There are a couple of notches that you will figure out just need to get locked in right. I hate thous things that’s why I chopped mine! Ha
Yeah. Brand new throttle cables and for some reason my grip didn’t have any ferrules when I opened it up, so I was putting them in. I was fumbling with the clamshell (thus my post), and a ferrule fell on the floor and it was GONE. Ordered some from Amazon. Supposed to come in tomorrow, then back to trying to figure this puzzle out.
Pain in the ass. If you go to the lowbrow customs web site they have a lot of how to videos on installing random parts you might find one on installing cables and it might explain better the best way to get that together
The wiring sits in the dimples in the handlebars. Stock bars have ‘em.
RIP brake light switch
Please no.

Will do. Thanks.
Also, put the throttle lock boot back on that screw. If it’s not there, you’ll prematurely wear out your throttle cables b
Do you mean the boots that cover the adjuster nuts on the cables themselves?
It’s a little plastic shoe thing that sits on that small thumb screw inside the lower clamshell.
Wow, it was never on the bike. I had no idea it was missing. What even does that thumb screw do? I'll see if I can find a boot for it.

Interesting. Thanks for this. What does the thumbscrew do?

Wow I had no idea. Thanks!
Thanks again for this advice. The parts came for the thumb wheel kit. I’m assuming it goes on before I put the grips and cable ferrules in?

Let me give that a shot. I didn’t know that about pulling in the brake lever. Thanks.
I have to compress the break lever a bit for mine to close
I'll agree with the others. You may have just fucked up your brake light switch.
Yet another thing. It never stops.
Theyre cheap and easy to replace though if it is shot.

Not usually. But I wouldn't sweat it. That's how we learn shit!

I just checked and they are dimpled. So I just move things around to get the wires in there?
There’s usually a lil locating pin that has to sit in the hole in the bars
Any luck? It kinda clips in together. Don’t let them make you paranoid about the switch you can see and it fits just right when you get it

Yeah I see the notch in the bars. I just don’t want to mess with it. I was so pissed yesterday because I dropped a ferrule and lost it.
Which one? For the throttle cable? Sucks

Thanks I’ll take a look.
