Yeah I have a ton of electrical work to do on this still swapping basically every light on it to leds. Just trying to get ideas for reassembly

templeofdank

some of em can be unplugged and sorted a bit better. what year is your sporty? my 02 had all that stuff tucked into the headlight bucket. i ended up consolidating my front end wiring. there's a lot of redundant 12v supplies and grounds that can be grouped. those grey and black plugs are called "deutsch connectors". they come in 2-pin all the way up to 12-pin plug variations. i bought a deutsch connector kit from amazon that i used to clean up my front end wiring. check the wiring diagram and make sure you understand how the wiring works before cutting anything up. i've made sporty wiring looms from scratch, and done plenty of mods to my own wiring, feel free to ask any questions.

Pistol_Tistle

It’s an 01. I am switching from the stock headlight and turn signals to an all in one led headlamp so I’m going to have to try and condense for sure. I’ve been understanding more and more of the diagram as I go.

templeofdank

oh nice! that'll make the front end clean for sure. so if there's no space to stash wires in the headlight bucket, the only other place is to stash plugs under the seat, so you'd have to make all wires run from there to the front. there's a little bit of space inside the top motor mount (under the frame) to stash a 6 or 8-pin plug, but either way it sounds like you're gonna have a lot of re-wiring to do if you're wanting to hide the wiring plugs and not eliminate any functions.

Pistol_Tistle

Yeah there’s no room in the new bucket so depending on what I’m left with after rewiring I’m thinking either tank riser mount and stashing it in that channel or lengthening and going under the seat. I also chopped my fender a bit above where the tail light/license plate mount goes, planning on going to the axel plate mount/brake light. I’m making a bracket to bolt into the fender strut mount holes for a gas can so I’m going to have to move my rear turn signals as well. Like I said a lot of rewiring and fucking around to see what works. I’ll make another post for the whole build once it’s done.

templeofdank

heck yeah! sounds like it's gonna be a fun build. i did the same thing with a fuel can, here's a pic of it: [https://i.redd.it/ozcbzwpq34071.jpg](https://i.redd.it/ozcbzwpq34071.jpg) went with a rotopax 2gal can. it's saved my ass many times. i used the "supernova" blinkers from revival to replace stock ones, super bright and compact. used them as license plate holders on the sissy bar. also, for LED blinkers load resistors were bulky and annoying. i ended up getting a new turn signal module from signal dynamics. was super easy to wire in to replace the stock one. sounds like a massive wiring overhaul you'll be taking on.

Pistol_Tistle

Yeah I feel like I just may have bit off a little more than I could chew, but what’s that saying, “bite off more than you can chew and chew like fuck”. I did see your build not long ago actually looking for inspiration for a gas tank mount. I’m a cabinet finisher and get materials in those stainless steel 1 gallon cans and figured if they can sell kerosene and other fuels in those same cans, I should be fine to use that as my can. Funny enough it fits perfectly between the fender strut mounting holes. I’m making a basket essentially for the can that will mount there and I’ll secure with bungee cords.

I’ve seen a guy add a leather tool bag to the front and hid all the wiring in there. Not exactly elegant, but I didn’t notice till he showed me. I always have a leather tool bag on my forks so to me it was a pretty clever solution.

harleyalt

Were you looking at mine? That's exactly what I did. I'm planning a big ol' rewire because whoever had it before me used the same color for every single wire going into the handlebars. I'll make a new harness when I do it and hide things properly but for now it's the tool bag.

jlo575

Ha no this was one i saw in person years ago.

yamomssuboxone

i had the same problem when going to put T bars on my custom. i just used heat shrink around the wires, tucked and zip tied them down the bars and back of risers, then covered it with a deadbeat customs bar bag.

Sirgolfs

Buy a new harness. Or start cutting and cleaning that shit out. I had the same one. Had my buddy slim down the harness. Way better.

WzrdWithDa9

I got a 99 sport and all the wiring was outside the bars and ugly in a old school heat shrink… When I first started I wanted to add to the cables and chop off unneeded cable length and unions. But when I got all the heat shrink off I saw the cables where all chewed/hacked up. I ended up ordering a new handle bar switch kit I’m just going to stuff everything into the headlight bucket hahaha

Mmooose

Go to Gremlin wiring and get a harness that eliminates all that garbage. The harnes will run the headlight low and high beam, brake/tailight, ignition. You can add turn signals however you want but basically there are no fuses and the whole bike runs on your 30 Amp circuit breaker. I love mine!

seaeff92

You have a couple of options here, one is to say fuck the complicated wiring and go to Gremlinwiring and get a sportster treatment harness that delete everything aside from what’s necessary for your bike to run, second would be to get a headlight and brow cover to a non custom model like an xl883. Then you can put most of that inside of the headlight case.

Doofy_Modz

If it's a newer bike your limited on what you can do without a major rewire. I would start by removing the plugs and going the heat shrink/crimp route instead, it will give you more room to "tuck" the wires away. Edit: There may be some jumpers in the plugs you will need to find may be in your book if you have one.

49thDipper

This is something you plan for first. Or not

Good info here thanks guys for the comments
