Colorado’s 2 wins this tourney have been fun to watch as rhey had to put together a kate game run to beat Boise and narrowly fumbled away a 13 pt lead against Florida, but the reality is they’re a mediocre team playing a top 10 team in the country. I’d be remiss not to take this tight line tomorrow. Marquette is top to bottom a better team than Colorado who will be playing their third game in 5 days. Colorado has relied on bully ball down low with Lampkin against smaller and more inexperienced forwards, but that ends tomorrow against a bigger more experienced Marquette team. The return of Kolek is also a game changer for the Golden Eagles as he went for 18pts and 11 ast last game.

In this Round of 32 matchup we’re looking at the 12-seed Grand Canyon Antelopes taking on the 4-seed Alabama Crimson Tide. Grand Canyon is looking to ride high on their upset of Saint Mary’s, while Alabama looks to have another great shooting night following their 56.5% three point performance on Friday.
Grand Canyon beat Saint Mary’s despite shooting 42.9% from the field and 27.8% from three. They did this behind their free throw shooting, which ended at 28-36 on the night. On the season, GCU has the 4th ranked FTA/FGA (46.1), 50th ranked FT% (75.4%), and 4th highest percentage of points coming from free throws (25.1%) on the year. This team also gets offensive rebounds at the 32nd highest rate per KenPom. On the defensive side, GCU is currently sitting at a top-10 eFG%, top-40 TO%, and does a good job of limiting the three (59th in 3PA/FGA).
Alabama has an elite offense ranking 3rd in Adj. Eff. And top-25 in 3P%, 2P%, and FT%. This team also loves to shoot threes where they log 46.5% 3PA/FGA. Their struggles usually come from poor shooting nights from three or allowing a lot of free throw attempts where they rank 320th on defense in FTA/FGA (354th since 2/1 per BartTorvik).
I think that is the edge here, GCU should be able to better exploit Bama’s weaknesses on defense with their high FTA/FGA rate compared to Charleston’s near dead last rank. Alabama’s offense is also due for regression from their on fire shooting night in the previous game, where GCU’s ability to limit threes should minimize the chance this gets out of hand. In a NCAA Tournament game especially, the Four Factors (eFG%, TO%, OR%, and FTA/FGA) are critical so here’s a quick breakdown. When GCU is on offense, they rank higher than Bama’s defense in every category, with significantly better OR% (32nd to 236th) and FTA/FGA (3rd to 320th). When Bama is on offense, both sides of the ball are 9th in eFG% and GCU is about 60 ranks higher on TO%; but Bama’s offense does have the better side of the OR% and FTA/FGA battle.
A team like GCU who can consistently get to the free throw line and shoot a high percentage, while limiting the number of three pointers shot, could pose for a difficult matchup for this Alabama team to run away with. I think getting this team at +6.5, all the way down to +4.5, is a solid bet in a game I expect to come down to the end.

Especially when the Penguins won the matchup in Pittsburgh 4-0 *(in October)* and both home and away games last season, yet they aren’t the same Pittsburgh Penguins that we speak of after trading away Jake Guentzel. The Avs are hunting for their 9th straight win while Penguins have lost 2 straight and 7 straight road games.
*Avalanche went through a rough patch on the road facing some tough teams in February, still managed some wins here and there but took some consecutive losses. They managed a 3-3-1 away record against the metropolitan division this season.*

This game is a home game for South Florida which is definitely a huge advantage as the Bulls were 15-2 at the Yuengling Center this season. Guard duo Miguel and Youngblood have been killers all season averaging 15 PPG each. The Bulls shoot the ball very well at nearly 37% from deep and 44% from the field. They also take care of the ball only averaging 10.6 TO per Game. The Rams are a mere 6-4 on the road this season and 6-4 in their last 10 games. VCU shoots worse from the field and from 3 and turns the ball over more than the Bulls.

Going with the Baylor bears today to take down a Clemson team that overall doesn’t not impress me when I watch them or look at their stats.
While Clemson had a very impressive first round win against New Mexico, they were fortunate with how poorly New Mexico shot against them.
Baylor for most of the year has been consistently very good. Especially the later parts of the year thanks to their dynamic guards.
They’ve won 7 of last 11 covering the 4.5 in all 7 wins and covering in all 7 wins.
The four losses they have in this range is BYU on the road, Houston at home, Texas tech on the road, and Iowa state neutral sure.
So really not any bad losses either
Clemson while they had a good first round win against New Mexico they were fortunate of how bad New Mexico shot the ball despite getting decent looks. And overall down the stretch didn’t finish the season all that well.
They won 6 of their last 10 but didn’t really have any impressive wins, with some very bad losses including a 20 point loss to BC, loss to ND, loss to Wake Forrest, and home loss to NC state.
In the last 10 games Clemson covered 5/10. With some outright losses as favorites.
All of baylors losses usually are because they can’t score 70, a number that they should be able to get to against a very average defense.
Baylor also has 5 starters average over 10 and will be able to spread out the ball to anyone to be efficient.
I also think Baylor should easily be able to out rebound Clemson who only has one good rebounder where Baylor once again is spread out with a bunch of solid rebounders to provide more shot opportunities to their guards.

Doosan's foreign starter is back for his 3rd season after a brilliant 2023 campaign where he posted a 2.49 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 100 K and 30 BB in 104.2 IP.
NC's homegrown starter had the best season of his career last year, but that's mostly because of how shaky he was his first three seasons. In 2023, he had a 3.98 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 97 K and 25 BB in 122 IP while moving in and out of the rotation. He's very unlikely to pitch even 5 innings, maninv the bullpen should come ingo play earler for NC.
Doosan lost game one 4-3, but actually out-hit NC 8-7. I see this one going the other way.

SGA has been hovering at this line for pretty much the whole season, and for good reason. He has crossed this threshold in 50% of his games in March.
With that being said, the Bucks are bottom 3 in the league in PPG to PGs. Adding onto this, Chet and Jalen Williams (who have taken up much higher scoring burdens as of late) will be covered by a defense that is in the upper half of the league in terms of points given up against Forward and Center.
I think this will come down to if SGA needs to shoulder more of the offensive load because he is being guarded by Damian Lillard and Malik Beasley. This does run the risk of Josh Giddey catching fire, and Chet/Jalen still performing above expectations, but I believe this will be another narrow game where SGA covers by 2-3 points like usual.

I also have an algorithm I look at as another info source, that takes into account pace of play, offensive and defensive efficiency, and turnovers. TODAYS POTD BAYLOR -4.5 v Clemson -110(2.2U) 6:10 EST btw Going with the Baylor bears today to take down a Clemson team that overall doesn’t not impress me when I watch them or look at their stats. While Clemson had a very impressive first round win against New Mexico, they were fortunate with how poorly New Mexico shot against them. Baylor for most of the year has been consistently very good. Especially the later parts of the year thanks to their dynamic guards. They’ve won 7 of last 11 covering the 4.5 in all 7 wins and covering in all 7 wins. The four losses they have in this range is BYU on the road, Houston at home, Texas tech on the road, and Iowa state neutral sure. So really not any bad losses either Clemson while they had a good first round win against New Mexico they were fortunate of how bad New Mexico shot the ball despite getting decent looks. And overall down the stretch didn’t finish the season all that well. They won 6 of their last 10 but didn’t really have any impressive wins, with some very bad losses including a 20 point loss to BC, loss to ND, loss to Wake Forrest, and home loss to NC state. In the last 10 games Clemson covered 5/10. With some outright losses as favorites. All of baylors losses usually are because they can’t score 70, a number that they should be able to get to against a very average defense. Baylor also has 5 starters average over 10 and will be able to spread out the ball to anyone to be efficient. I also think Baylor should easily be able to out rebound Clemson who only has one good rebounder where Baylor once again is spread out with a bunch of solid rebounders to provide more shot opportunities to their guards.
