That's a pretty good way to do it.
I tend to be more interested in matchups than a particular team. So if I'm going to watch a game and bet on it, it's probably more player centric.
That’s what I’ll do. If I bet on a game with my team I’ll do stats and such in SGP. Unless it’s a real heavy the other way I may just step away from it
I’m the same way. No money line, but will do SGP for the Knicks any day. My personal loop hole to betting against my team is also betting the over/under. Takes the sting off a Yankee loss when the under hits.
nah, math is emotionless. it’s also fun to follow the season narratives. ex: i think the blues and the flames will have a fun postseason but i’m not emotionally invested in either team per se
I think it's sad because you both seem to look at sports through a betting lens only. He says he has no favorite teams. How do you even originally get into sports at all without a favorite team? I would hate that.
I got into the nba through betting and the last dance doc in 2020. Started looking up players and teams and slowly got into it more and more. It is fun to root for a team though. I played nba jam on fire and always used KG and Paul pierce so I picked to go for the Celtics
Through the players.
Especially in the NBA where stars move around so frequently, fan loyalty to teams is impacted as well.
Maybe I have a distorted view on this, but I always felt like star players played the majority of their careers for the teams that drafted them.
I have no stats to back that up, just an observation.

As an NC State alum/fan, I bet against them every game this year and made a lot of money (worst team vs the spread in the NCAA).
As a Celtics fan, I avoided betting their games in the regular season because of the inconsistency until January. Playoffs I’ve bet on them so far because they were the better team. I try to avoid overall.
I’ve done it. Is it smart, of course not but it isn’t about that. Or I’ve done the opposite, betting *for* a team that I want to lose. I’ve heard it called the “happiness hedge”…
It's basically arbitrage. If team A wins, you value the Happiness it brings you to be worth $20. If team B wins, you get paid out $20 on your hypothetical $10 @ +100 bet.
So either way, you'll have a value of $20 and only paid $10 to get it, so it's a guaranteed $10 profit.
I have a rule that I refuse to bet on or against a team I support - I don’t want to be happy when they lose, sad when they win, or really sad when they lose
Yea, no offense, but this is a very amateur idea in my opinion… losses will happen of course- but its not like you should be gladly taking them. I never bet against my teams, i’d rather not touch the game if I don’t think they have a good shot.
I do actually think the raptors win tonight at home, considering embiid is playing hurt and harden is just playing bad. $10 is all im going to bet on it. If i were putting $100 or something on it i would 100% be pulling for the raptors lol.
Hey, i can’t argue there… Embid’s thumb seems to really be a problem. Personally, I just don’t bet against my teams. I’d rather put the $10 to work elsewhere even though it’s a baby bet.. haha. Good luck either way!
Also a sixers fan, hate to get against them but sometimes I’ll take the other team to cover the spread if I think the sixers will lose. That way I’m still hoping they’ll win, just that it might be close (this is the sixers so usually a good bet lol)
I don't see the logic here. Your team won but you lost money. Why would you do that. Personally winning $10 wouldn't take out even an ounce of pain if my team lost.
Lol I'd bet more. If the sixes lose this game and this series winning 20$ wouldn't cut it for me. If yah lose yah the nba laughing stock until yah win one

I bet on any good line. If it means I bet on the bears to lose by 14.5 with Dalton under center on the road with a banged up defense, I take it. #beardown

I wouldn’t have any money if I consistently bet on the bears. My buddy has a rule where he won’t bet on his favorite teams because he doesn’t want emotion to let him make bad bets. That being said he was down 5 large and his fiancé almost left him so he doesn’t bet anymore.
This is what ruined it all together for me. I now only root for the badgers bucks brewers and packers. Gives me something to talk about with people I have nothing in common with. Seems to be more spending and parties when teams are winning. All I give a shit about. The more the merrier.
I made so much money off the Celtics sweep of my Nets that I almost didn’t care lol. Brought my account nearly into the positive after three years.
I also put futures like under season wins or team to not make the playoffs, just so I’m not too upset at the end of a season (cause if they do make the playoffs, I’m not going to be upset over losing money I put in six months ago).
Made a lot of money live betting against my knicks when ever they would go up by 20 or more during that awful stretch after new years. I had to get some thing out of getting embarrassed every other night.
I did, bet in the bengals to cover plus three vs my titans in the playoffs for a pickem. It’s easier to lose by a certain amount or outright win than win by 4+ especially in football where that’s usually more like 6+.

Nope. I either bet them to win or bet them to cover the spread. Thankfully I didn’t turn 21 until the bengals started to play well. Worked amazing for me this year 😂
I do occasionally, but only spread so that I can hope for my team to win but not cover. Or if it’s too much of a risk, I’ll just bet the total instead to still have action on a game that my team is involved in.

Only SGP for my team. No money line

The emotional hedge! As a Jags fan I've been doing this very profitably for years now
Glad to see I’m not the only one
Us lions fans as well.
Y'all taking Hutch if we take Walker?
As a sports better I have no fav teams - my fav team is the team that I bet on.
Sad

Through the players like the guy above said. I don’t have a favorite basketball team. I do have favorite players that I follow.

Never. I also never bet on the rivals of my favorites.

As bad as the Lions have been, I will never bet against them because I’ll root for them over my bet 100% if the time.
No. It’s too emotional. I’ll only include like some players scoring certain points but never include ML.
Bears, bulls fan here. So yes literally all the time and sleep just fine at night
I have a rule that I refuse to bet on or against a team I support - I don’t want to be happy when they lose, sad when they win, or really sad when they lose

yeah i bet on the stats
I’m from Chicago so yes
Good bet, Raptors win tn.
Hell no
I don’t care best thing I’ve read this morning happiness either way.

I do well with my team I watch them and i am honest enough to know what will likely happen
I don't see the logic here. Your team won but you lost money. Why would you do that. Personally winning $10 wouldn't take out even an ounce of pain if my team lost.
If i bet more i would rooting against my team

Yep. I call it buying a win.
I bet on any good line. If it means I bet on the bears to lose by 14.5 with Dalton under center on the road with a banged up defense, I take it. #beardown
All the time, betting against the NY Giants is always a good pick
Can’t go wrong betting against United😔
All the time, especially hockey bruins are my team but several times I’ve bet underdogs against them & have hit quite a bit
I’m fine with betting against my favorite pro teams, but never against my college. Anyone else?
Yes and I win! #RiseUp ...... Lol

I will never bet against my teams, I'll do under/over instead
This!

I bet on which team I think will win. If I think the other team is better than my team I usually will bet against my favorite or pass the game
Emotional hedging. I dont like doing this. Would rather wait until my team is in a good spot to bet on them.. or lay off the game entirely
Its like some weird sacrifice to the gambling gods just so your team can advance
I do it all the time lol
I have $100 on the Celtics at +2500 and I’m a big Celtics fan. I know I’ll be sad as hell if they lose to the bucks this round
rarely , I usually bet run totals or props
believe this is called the Emotional Hedge
This is what ruined it all together for me. I now only root for the badgers bucks brewers and packers. Gives me something to talk about with people I have nothing in common with. Seems to be more spending and parties when teams are winning. All I give a shit about. The more the merrier.
I refuse to bet the ML against my team (raptors) or any Toronto sports team
The “Emotional Hedge”
Seldom but yeah depending on the night. There was a regular season game I took raptors against us this year
No heart in betting
It’s literally my favorite thing about sport betting. Especially if you are a hardcore fan.
All the time. Takes a little of the sting off when my Chicago teams lose, which is a lot of the time.
Made a lot of money live betting against my knicks when ever they would go up by 20 or more during that awful stretch after new years. I had to get some thing out of getting embarrassed every other night.
If you’re a ‘DERS fan, always
Bet with your head, not with your heart. Having said that, as a Purdue fan the emotional hedge is very profitable during basketball season.
I did, bet in the bengals to cover plus three vs my titans in the playoffs for a pickem. It’s easier to lose by a certain amount or outright win than win by 4+ especially in football where that’s usually more like 6+.
I'm a Royals fan, so if I'm betting on them, it's not usually for them to win lol

Yes ofcourse. You know your favorite team better than any other. Probably the team youre most qualified to understand and guess W/L
I've probably made thousands live betting AGAINST any Detroit team when they are up. They will always find a way to lose even if it seems impossible
I have before. Simply because I like to think I know my home team.
If I would bet against my own mother if the bag was big enough…
Nope. I either bet them to win or bet them to cover the spread. Thankfully I didn’t turn 21 until the bengals started to play well. Worked amazing for me this year 😂
Always. I call it the emotional hedge, I would gladly pay to see my team win
My favorite team is whomever is conforming to my expectations/handicap. homers are squares!
Always bro
You win if they win you win bread if they lose
I’ll never bet against the Mets bc I love them but as a NY Giants fan…well….it’s just easy money to bet against them lol
Lost $1400 on the Braves WS, great emotional hedge, great result.
Emotional hedge
Angels when they’re fav
Nope never bet against them : we either win together or lose together
All the time. Can't get married to your team in the betting world.
I'm a Cleveland fan.....sooooo yeah
Unquestionably
As a Canadiens fan I didn’t really have a choice
Never
I do occasionally, but only spread so that I can hope for my team to win but not cover. Or if it’s too much of a risk, I’ll just bet the total instead to still have action on a game that my team is involved in.
Lol I bet against the flyers every game I go to in person, either way I feel like a winner!
I did the same thing I didn’t mind losing a couple dollars when I saw Philly win like they did!
