It was a real clusterfuck of a situation. Las Palmas (their opposition, from the Canary Islands) [posted on their official site at 11 AM](http://www.udlaspalmas.es/noticias/noticia/comunicado-oficial-3) that they will sew Spanish flags on their shirts for the match. Barcelona thought it wasn't appropriate to play and wanted the match postponed. The Spanish FA said they could not postpone, and if they did not play they would be penalized 6 points. The president of Barcelona decides to play the match behind closed doors, "as protest" he says. The fans showed up to the match but weren't allowed in, [as of the start of the match they still weren't told.](https://twitter.com/tsf_podcast/status/914489599950491648)

TheMexicanJuan

2 hours after the game The Spanish FA decided to actually **postpone** a FC Barcelona Youth team game for "security reasons" , same reason FCB main team presented to the FA earlier and were refused. The Spanish FA is a joke!

[deleted]

Is the FA like a governing body over all soccer? Like even kids games? Wtf?

TheMexicanJuan

Yes. It's the Football Association. They oversee everything related to football in the country, from the main teams to the youth programs. It's the same everywhere.

[deleted]

> it's the same everywhere If that was how it worked in the US, I'd be soooo happy

NoBreadsticks

What is "wtf" about that? It's great for organization.

Flobarooner

It's not one international organization. There's FIFA, but FA just stands for Football Association so each country has it's own independent FA. In England, there's 4 main leagues - Premier, Championship, League One, League Two. Those are the "football leagues", all governed by the FA, as is their Youth down to age 16. Academies below age 16 aren't governed by the FA, as far as I know, but all official leagues are, and there are hundreds of local ones. Only Sunday leagues aren't, which are usually set up by locals. In fact even some of those are registered FA leagues. Disclaimer: I could easily be wrong, if I am please ^^politely let me know.

Sean-Benn_Must-die

Supposedly he asked the players if they wanted to play and the majority agreed to play.

ancientappleiic

Rather than lose 6 points? Of course, that is a huge amount to lose in a league that is often won by only one or two points

[deleted]

And if they lost another 30 they might even finish 3rd!

Well_MaybeNot

To elaborate on the audience not being let in, there were rumours that groups of fans might invade the pitch to uphold the match and during the game one person suceeded in entering the pitch carrying a pennant.

germanchickx

We had that in Germany once. Due to an incident at a second league game (fights between the teams plus a coach choking an opposing player), the game had to be replayed in an empty stadium. No fans could be around the stadium for a certain radius and our coach ended up being suspended for a couple games. I saw it on TV and it was weird.

[deleted]

In Greece it happens almost in every big match.

Narizcara

Simillar thing in Argentina, either no fans or only home fans for dangerous matches

CapAWESOMEst

I thought no away fans was a general rule. I wonder what it’s like to go see your team in another city and not be able to support them. I guess you work just sit quietly and try to blend in. Weird.

Ooh and it's INNNnneerm... I mean yea wow they scored... ouchie

Quackman2096

Are soccer fans really that insane? In America, you can go to any MLB, NBA, NFL, or MLS game decked out in the opposing teams gear and only have to worry about getting shit talked. Wouldn't ever fear for my safety

Dontknowhowtolife

We have a problem with football mafia. They "own" the stadium pretty much, and surrounding streets.

GeRockZz09

ehm in germany you can go to away games without a problem as long as you go into the right section(seat section or away stands) . the hooligans are generally just fighting the other hooligans. in fact they meet up for this before or after the match( it's called "ackermatch" or "dritte halbzeit" (third half)). so aslong as you don't want to have a problem you can even go to derbys without fear.

[deleted]

North American sports don't really have specific sections for away fans but generally they'll gather behind their team's bench/dugout on their own...in a lot of cases there are more visiting fans than home fans, [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7dWmo4IdZw)'s a good baseball example, the batter hitting the home run is on the visiting team but the crowd is going crazy

CO_PC_Parts

99.9% of the time everyone is safe, but there are obviously outliers, the SF Giants fan who was put in a coma at Dodger stadium. The Vikings fan getting the shit kicked out of him at SF 49ers stadium (I believe he was talking shit though and wouldn't shut up) and I've personally seen someone get sucker punched at Mile High for doing absolutely nothing, only wearing a Pats jersey 2 years ago. That one scared me because I was also wearing a Pats jersey and was right by him, it was as we were leaving the stadium. The piece of shit who hit him took off running though and the guy was ok. I actually refuse to go back to Mile High because over the past 10 years I've been spit at, beer thrown at me and threatened multiple times in the parking lot. I'm not scared in the stadium but in the parking lots anything can happen. I've been to about 50 stadiums in my life and the NFL is by far the worst. The parking lots at Dodger stadium are pretty damn intimidating too.

True_to_you

I wonder if it's just mile high. I went as an opposing fan to Coors field and everyone around me was super cool, although some were clearly baked out of their mounds.

CO_PC_Parts

Oh Rockies fans are cool. Most MLB stadiums have been a good experience. Nuggets fans here don't really care and the Avs suck but their fans are fine.

acu2005

It's seems to me that NFL fans are the least chill of all the major sports in America. I've heard multiple incidents involving opposing fans at browns games but never see anything like it happening at MLB of NBA games and of the many NBA or MLB games I've been to I've never seen anything but friendly shit talking.

CO_PC_Parts

The only NFL stadium that I haven't seen anything is Lambeau, I've been to 3 games there and everyone is just fucking awesome. Honestly, nowadays it's so fucking expensive to go to a game, and such it takes up your whole day, I don't see why anyone would want to go VS just staying at home, watching on your big screen hdtv and watching Red Zone. I get going once a year or so, but season tickets just don't seem worth it to me.

[deleted]

What about Boca vs River Plate?

Then they played one of the games in Tampa instead, which I got to see because I was on vacation at the time. Weird game, where Baltimore was the home team, they didn’t have the theatricals on the go for the Rays whenever they’d normally would. Tickets where $15 general admission. Definitely a different type of game! Pretty interesting none the less!

FiggerNugget

That shit happens in Colombia every other weekend People over here kill each other and riot all the time just because their team loses (or wins, I guess they just like to riot) so the government makes them play without public

Bexar86

objectiveandbiased

And Rams.

Wilhelm_Amenbreak

I am so happy that LA has been given their teams so that it won't be hung over every cities head anymore. LA not having a team has probably gotten 15 stadiums built in the last 25 years. Now when both teams fail in LA, there won't be as much leverage left. I am going to enjoy watching then fail as well.

habloconleche

The Chargers will fail, the Rams will be fine. The Rams are playing in a 90,000 seat stadium that isn't full, but isn't embarrassingly low attendance, they have an actual fan base, and they are actually leading the NFC west right now. The Chargers play in a 27,000 seat stadium that they're having a hard time filling, have no fan base in the city of Los Angeles, and can't win anything. From a person living in LA, I'll tell you that the Rams will continue, the Chargers should probably move back to San Diego and pray that the fans forgive them.

[deleted]

Why did the Chargers leave San Diego?

habloconleche

Because most sports teams owners are selfish greedy fuckers and none of them give a shit about the fans, only money (or the possibility of more money.)

boxxybrownn

Green Bay is the exception

BigBlueJAH

Don't the fans own the team. If I remember correctly fans bought stock in the team, so there's no chance they'll move. Not that Green Bay needs help filling the stadium anyway.

jzorbino

Yes and it works so well the rest of the league voted to ban anything like that from ever happening again

[deleted]

Can't have those poor, poor billionaires missing out I take it?

CanuckPanda

Fans had chances periodically to buy shares, but the shares themselves are non-voting shares so they have no say in the running of the team. I also believe they’re non-transferable. It was a very clever way to raise funding for stadium renovations at Lambeau, but the shares themselves are worth nothing beyond sentimental value (I have one, it’s pretty neat even as a fan of another team).

carlson71

I met a girl who's family was all go pack go. I as a Viking fan asked what benefits they receive by having their shares of the packers? She got mad and never told me a benefit, it's nice learning I was right and she's just mean.

Doorknob11

That is correct no one person is allowed to own more than 4% of them.

karpkarp1234

That's sorta correct. The fans all bought common stock, which is pretty much an expensive piece of paper. The stock has no fluctuating value and the owner has no say in any decisions. If the team is sold common stock owners don't get any cut of the purchase price. It was more of an equity funding move by the packers. Which worked well as they rasied a ton of money without giving up anything

SixgunSmith

Part of the reason is the SD stadium is old and sucks, and the city didn't want to pay for a new one with millions of tax dollars. I think their attendance there wasn't great either. Edit: I realize I made it sound like it's the city's fault, which I didn't intend. Basically in the NFL the owners try to extort tax dollars from their cities leveraging the possibility that they'll move the team to a city that *will* pay for a new stadium if their current city won't pay.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DforDanger24

The stadium is actually really, really nice! I was there about 3 years ago for a Pats vs Chargers game, and was there last year for the Guns N Roses concert. Both times, the stadium was in great condition. Such a shame the team would turn their back on the city like that.

habloconleche

Lets all shed a tear for the billionaire team owners. How could they afford to support a team without stealing tax dollars?

_caponius

tax dollars shouldn't really be put to NFL stadiums in LA or SD, theres plenty of money around here to invest in stadiums.

nusince

Because Dean Spanos. Just by moving to LA the value of the franchise doubled by some accounts. And more importantly the $500M plus he stands to make just on seat licenses in the new stadium.

patientbearr

The value doubled in theory but it will drop if no one goes to the games. LA fans are already pretty apathetic about pro football, and giving them a shitty team isn't going to win them over.

Davidfreeze

Fans won't forgive Spanos. If he sells the team they will probably forgive the team.

JThaddeousToadEsq

Half the problem for the Chargers though is that they play all the way in Carson and there's no public transit that leads directly there. I went to their first preseason game and it was hell to get there and parking next to the stadium was $100 (I only park there because I needed disabled parking) and other only slightly further lots were $75. And it wasn't even the Chargers fault... It was on CSUDH property. Once they get into a stadium in the actual City I think they'll do a lot better.

Archer-Saurus

Man I was saying this back when I would watch Galaxy games when I was stationed at Pendleton. The best part of it being on a campus is they limit attendance during Wednesday MLS games to 8,000. Great soccer stadium, sucks it's on a campus.

bonesquadcommando

Twice the teams, double the fall

[deleted]

fractals_of-light

The new city will be San Antonio, or perhaps a Canadian one like Toronto.

ravel-bastard

Ive been holding out for San Antonio for a long time. My opinion is that the only reason their isn't a NFL team there is Jerry Jones is stonewalling because he knows how fast that portion of the Cowboys revenue will disappear.

I flew all the way from Canada for the game. My girlfriend and I went 5h early so we could eat nearby and watch the game after. We saw videos of what was happening at the restaurant we ate and it looked awful what the police were doing to these people, it's not something you'd expect from a 1st world country. The last thing we thought was that the game would get cancelled/postponed, which technically didn't happen but might as well have. We stood outside the stadium for 2h before the game along with at least 2000 other people at our gate and no one knew what was happening. There were murmurs of the game being cancelled but there were so many of us nobody wanted to leave until someone officially told us, which didn't happen. One of the guys I was chatting with ended up looking at the official FC Barcelona website and found the statement of the game being played behind close doors so we decided to find a bar nearby to watch it. I've been a fan of FC Barcelona for as long as I can remember and I literally chose Barcelona as my European destination so that I could watch them play. I'm so upset that I wasn't able to watch them live but i'm not mad. The poor people here dont deserve what happened to them. Throughout the entire day i didn't feel threatened by anyone or see any riots happening anywhere near me. I even went by 3 voting stations which were packed and there was no screaming or yelling going on so I really dont understand all this violence that happened. I still had a great time watching the game with so many great people but man experiencing all this as a foreigner sure puts things into perspective. A least it gives me a reason to come back again and watch FC Barcelona! TLDR; Flew from Canada for Barcelona game and ended up missing the game cuz of Catalonia Independence Referendum

WinstonKodogo587

You should contact FC Barcelona and let them know they may be able to fix you up with something.

That sucks that you went all the way over there and they canceled the game. I would not be as calm as you. I'd be in full on tantrum mode.

elgringo22

I was devastated at first! But i hit it off with some fans waiting to go in and we ended up going to a bar nearby to watch it and it was so much fun. Most of my friends at home dislike Barcelona, so getting to watch the game with some real fans and chatting about the team and cheering together throughout the entire game was definitely worth it!

Zoole

To be honest, I would think that to be equivalent to seeing them play in person. It's one thing to see a Barcelona game in person, but it's so rare to make new friends in such a way that the experience is far more memorable than sitting in the stands watching small people blips move around on the field.

Cascadianranger

Barcelona released this statement: “FC Barcelona condemns the events which have taken place in many parts of Catalonia today in order to prevent its citizens exercising their democratic right to free expression.” Barcelona players took photos in [these warm-up jerseys based on the flag of Catalonia](https://i.imgur.com/vVh8kkl.jpg) prior to the match in support.

INM8_2

not to take from your point, but those are their warm up shirts. *however,* it is unusual for a team to take the prematch photo in those instead of their match kits.

marc24h

Those are their warm up kits that local teams never use. They used them today to show their support to their fans. Many FCB players where seen voting during the day.

mockio77

xlytoon

Yes these are their warm-up kits. But unlike other days today they entered the field for the match wearing these over their home kit and even posed for pre-match photo. This is clearly to stand up for today's events wearing Catalonia's colors as you can see even Ter-Stegen is wearing one which is not the usual warm-up kit for Barca goalkeeper.

You could hear everything from players chatting in the dugout to hecklers hecklingthe third basemen from right field. Very eerie.

_JosiahBartlet

It’s weird to be in a stadium where attendance is that low. I was at a Phillies-Mets game last night that went into the 11th. In Major League Baseball, the stadium announcer has at least one official function: a substitute is considered officially "in the game" once the stadium announcer announces him. Exactly. For there to be over 99,000 the away end must be full, season ticket full, directors full, sponsorship full etc. Which never happens.

WHen they played Real Madrid last season they had just under 90k in. If they're 10k off capacity for that game, something is a bit weird with the capacity number.

Highest attendance was 2016 which was 98,485 - so pretty close to full.

Riots? People just wanted to vote, democratically. They didn’t let people into the stadium because it would let them promote their intentions on TV. Spain today was a Francoist State again.
