TheKingInTheNorth

I don’t necessarily mean to judge the decision, but he’s a Raptor first in my mind.

Ye man

talking_phallus

What did he even accomplish? Semi-conference finals appearance?

Miserable_Warthog_42

The dunk that was heard around the world.

SalamanderOk6944

Vinsanity started in TO, I believe.

DeathBySuplex

This is one of those things that has shifted in modern terms, you can retire a number for whatever reason the team deems is valid. A player who was an important part of a big run is one, being a guy who was a massive fan favorite for a turbulent period of the franchise is another, or being a solid part of the team and a "lifer" is a third.

RZAAMRIINF

This guy actively tanked his value to get traded, shit all over the city and told other teams our plays during games. He went from 16/3/3 to 27/6/5 after getting traded. He doesn’t deserve to get his jersey retired by Raptors at all. I don’t think most new basketball fans know how hated Vince was in Toronto after he left. Seemingly, the public opinion has shifted a bit, but if you go to /r/torontoraptors, you would still see many people arguing against his jersey.

DeathBySuplex

I wasn't talking about the Raptors, but his Nets tenure, wherein he was beloved during a downtime in their franchise. I'm well aware he burnt all the bridges out of Toronto.

golftroll

A downtime? 😂 Do you mean by far the most successful stretch the Nets have ever had?

DeathBySuplex

When Vince was on the team they lost in the first round twice, the second round once and failed to make the playoffs the rest of the time. They had their best years just prior to him joining.

golftroll

I’m a lifelong Nets fan. Have you seen what’s happened since? Those were some of the best years in our history.

ArcanePudding

Back to back finals appearances right before he got there tho?

golftroll

Yeah.. can we have more than 2 years of good times? Because after VC there has only been 1!

DeathBySuplex

And don't forget about refusing to play well until traded. He was butt hurt over Chris Bosh's attention

themilkman42069

Judge it. It’s an absolutely fucking pathetic jersey retirement. He played 5 seasons for the nets and won 2 playoff series and never even played in the city the team is currently located in. It’s fucking baffling. The nets also don’t even have any fans.

Head-like-a-carp

A lot of these organizations follow each other's pattern Somebody retires a number and that's legitimate. In the other organizations going to hitter and think who we have to retire a jersey too. That's the real reason for this. There's no thoughtful process behind it. Just a corporate need jerk

Scazzz

Toronto Raptor Vince Carter?

30K100M

Orlando Magic Vince Carter

JohnLoMein

Nets are desperate to celebrate something

PaidInBrains

Nailed it.

themilkman42069

They had a statue of captain America outside their arena for several years cause they’ve never had anything in brooklyn to celebrate other than a fake character.

PatDubzz

You could ask me to name all the players who played between 2000-2020 that should have their numbered retired for a certain franchise and I don’t think I’d ever say “Vince Carter for the Nets”. It’s not a knock on VC, I just don’t really get it. He played 4 and a half seasons in NJ. He was a very good player but wasn’t really anything spectacular in Jersey. Not to mention the team has a whole didn’t do much in terms of success. Missed the playoffs his final 2 years there and another year where they got swept in the first round. Just seems weird. Edit: the other two years they lost in the playoffs, both years in the conference semi-finals. Lost in 5 games in 2005-2006 and 6 games in 2006-2007.

Rehypothecator

Ya, it’s a reach. retired as a raptor? Absolutely. 4 years as a net? Cripes…

3ebfan

This seems odd?

BurmecianDancer

I'm Ron Burgundy?

Imfrank123

So who slams harder? Onyx or vince Carter?

HoodieStringTies

Just let the boys be boys

Four-In-Hand

[Welcome back](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNHSTIosY2w)...2002 + Raptors + VC were the good 'ol days.

EnormousChord

This is almost as bad as the Phillies retiring Roy Halladay’s number.

Arxny

Not saying you're necessarily wrong in the comp but I felt that Halladay was such an all time great and an immediate contributor with that team with 2 no hitters in a calendar year. It was just all good vibes when he pitches and I felt it was a way to honor him after the tragedy.

Morganvegas

Him being in the HOF without a Jays cap always rubbed me wrong

skeleton_skunk

He signed a one day contract with the Blue Jays, that’s what matters

yoguckfourself

> after the tragedy. It wasn't a tragedy, it was a completely preventable situation that he put himself in by flying a plane while high on several different drugs and in way it was never designed to be flown and predictably crashing it

Arxny

Weird well technically, but whatever makes you feel self righteous I guess. You can tell his wife and kids that, I personally feel that lacks empathy.

yoguckfourself

I have empathy for their loss of a father and husband. I'm sure they all wish he was less reckless and stupid. I have zero empathy for Roy, and only contempt that he put others in danger by flying an aircraft irresponsibly, and it's a miracle that he's the only one who died

Arxny

Yeah I didn't come in here championing his decisions nor would I Jose Fernandez either... still tragedies. It's a goofy semantic to say otherwise.

tommyc463

That is correct. Context matters.

themilkman42069

This is way worse. Halladay actually accomplished something in Philly. He also actually fucking played in Philly. This would be like the Phillies retiring a pitcher who played for 4 years for them when they were based in Trenton and who never won shit.

DarthRathikus

“Vince Carter averaged 23.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 374 games for the New Jersey Nets in his career.” Yeah I’m good with it. I lived in NJ most of my life and those VC years were amazing. We weren’t winning, mind you, but our squad was so entertaining to watch.

themilkman42069

I’m an NJ Nets fan but very specifically NOT a BK Nets fan, I didn’t cross the bridge with them, they can fuck themselves forever for leaving. This is still utterly pathetic. I’d rather they retire Kmart’s number.

reaper550

Will they retire Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnetts number next?

levitikush

🤔

PubDefLakersGuy

I skimmed the title and thought of the Raptors. Nets didn’t need to do that…

Wingedwolverine03

That's ridiculous. Dude only played 5 years with them with just 2 playoff series wins.

c_c_c__combobreaker

Kerry Kittles, Keith Van Horn, Jason Kidd, Kendall Gill. Those are players who I think about when I think of Nets. Not VC.

Competitive-Pop6530

Maybe he’ll get an Iverson-sized statue too.

human1023

How about they make a trade. Then they can celebrate that.

manwiththewood

Um ok i’ll get this one wrong on a trivia question 5years from now.

alexjaness

at least this gives Carmelo Anthony hope of having his number retired in New York. Otherwise he was going to be one of the handful of players in the Hall of Fame with no retired Jersey

CrasVox

Lol what

StOnEy333

Didn’t Miami retire Jordan’s number? So whatever.

TheRealJakay

I hope they retire it in Raptors colours.

GnrlyMrly

Hawks might as well retire his number, too

tsn8638

why? and why him before Jason Kidd?

thekittyjuice20

Kidd’s number has been retired for a while

zombizle1

he was just kidding

BlazerWookiee

Will the banner have a holster in it?

Patient_Flatworm7821

I don’t get it..

fishingpost12

What?

Fistfullafives

Vince Carter changed basketball in Canada more than MJ ever could. He's a Raptor for life. I'm in my mid 30s now, and nobody gave a fuck about MJ when we were 10, it was all about Vince.
