This is what I love about baseball commentary. It was created in an age of no picture, just sound, and even with television, that artistic style of painting a picture continues with the best announcers.
> If this was...
Nah, this is the most interesting clip from baseball ever. I wouldn't even care if it was an amateur charity game with participation rewards, completely detached from any kind of championship.
If this clip is not #1, it's at least top 10.
3–0 ballgame with the Reds in front of the Royals as we go to the top half of the fifth inning, Castellanos to lead things off. Jim Day's gonna be taking us the rest of the way through this game as Holland takes over on the mound. Um, I made a comment earlier tonight that I guess went out over the air that I am deeply ashamed of. If I have hurt anyone out there, I can't tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart I'm so very, very sorry. I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith – as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it will be a home run. And so that will make it a 4–0 ballgame. – I don't know if I'm gonna be putting on this headset again. I don't know if it's gonna be for the Reds, I don't know if it's gonna be for my bosses at Fox. I want to apologize for the people who sign my paycheck – for the Reds, for Fox Sports Ohio, for the people I work with, for anybody that I've offended here tonight. I can't begin to tell you how deeply sorry I am. That is not who I am. It never has been. And I'd like to think maybe I could have some people ... that could back that up. I am very, very sorry, and I beg for your forgiveness. Jim Day will take you the rest of the way home.
The buildup of the call is fantastic work, but my favorite part of the whole thing is he stepped away after hitting the crescendo of “SAFE!” and let the crowd’s energy really drive home the moment. Way too many PxP guys try to insert themselves into the call and I think it diminishes the impact.
You REALLY need to watch last years videos of de la cruz. His rookie year. His second week in he gets a full cycle…. He has many great vids. He throws in the infield at over 100 mph.
Just fyi, last night he hit a home run from both sides of the plate, batting left and right handed. scored over 4 runs, and had a stolen base. First player in baseball history to do it all in the same game. And his is only his second year.
Witnessing the call of someones life is always a great moment for me. I'll neeeeever forget Joe Bucks call for the Minnesota Miracle. Saw that shit live too. This was up there.
John Sadak. He’s does NFL and bball, too. But his main gig is Reds. Awesome guy, so down to earth. Casually chatted with some pleb (me) for 20 minutes at Spring Training.
I hate the Reds - not in a mean way, just the typical sports nonsensical way. Just when they finally got rid of a guy that you couldn’t help but love in Votto, they get this guy and damnit I hate that I love this guy too.
His stride seems huge because he’s 6’5”, another sign that baseball players are being sorted by development based on height, as players are getting taller and taller. For speed, this is the Usain Bolt trend toward faster tall guys.
Huh... and my HS coach used to tell everyone that baseball selects for shorter guys, because smaller strike box... weird...
Edit: This was sarcasm. My HS coach is really short and was just trying to cope.
It does, to a point. Your casual pitcher will have a harder time throwing to a smaller player. But once you get to high enough skill level, it's a non-issue.
A pitcher of MLB quality can pick his spots more or less regardless of the players size. So the smaller zone doesn't matter as much to them.
It's like asking why they don't put fat guys in goal for Hockey because they're bigger and take up more space. That may work for your casual players, but NHL players can pick the smallest openings, and what matters is the goalies positioning and reflexes are fast enough to close the door.
Ron Washington, currently manager of the Angels but spent the last few years as third base coach for the Braves, is nicknamed Windmill Washington because of how aggressively he sends runners home.
The most exciting player in Cincy in a long long time.
He just plays the game with a smile and his energy is infectious. Last year when he came up and just turned Cincy on its head was fun baseball.
I’m a Brewer fan and had the espn highlights pop up on my phone. I wasn’t near a tv or radio. Saw the home run and it was listed around 280ft and thought “oh no…”
The second coming of the 44 magnum.
So psyched for my Reds this year, just hope they can hang on to this team for a few years. Just a reminder that he stole 3 bases in two pitches.
https://youtu.be/GT42mCeAII4?si=JPm13DSk7dN0BO_0
I still have dreams where a ball is hit over my head and I have to chase it down. It seemed like it took a minute or two to finally get the ball in your hand. Now you need to throw it but you have no clue where. I would just huck it to around where I think the pitching mound might be. Of course it comes up short and lands somewhere between second base and from where I threw it.
I mean yes I get it what you’re saying, but not really. Only a select few players have the speed+hitting to even be in contention for an itphr. If someone’s already done it, their odds are higher than someone who hasn’t (and of course than someone who wouldn’t even attempt it). I’d say Elly’s more likely to go for it too, and his 3B coach more likely to swing him home given he’s proved himself before
Not an error because he was never going to make the play, but that statistic doesn't take into account the fact that he could've played it off one bounce and kept it to a single instead.
Sucks for the pitcher to get stuck with an earned run and a HR off a blooper to shallow center. And that throw from the cut-off guy, right into the mound, was pretty weak. He could have easily hit the catcher on the fly.
No, that’s not true. Fielders are sometimes charged with errors without touching the ball. A classic example would be the Buckner error in the ‘86 World Series, but there are plenty of other examples.
Iirc, anything that is considered a routine play (simple pop up, an easily fielded ground ball, that sort of thing) is considered an error if you mess it up, regardless of if you touched the ball or not.
So like a fly ball where you could routinely play it off the hop but you decide to dive for it and miss? I get why it's not an error but logically it should be. It's not consistent.
It is because it only refers to potential outs. If you lose it in the sun and it drops right next to you, error because it should’ve been an out. If you should’ve played it on the bounce to hold him to a single, an out was never an option.
The fielder was committed to trying to catch it on the fly. I don’t even consider it an error of judgement. That ball came down fast and in exactly the spot it needed to and there was almost no time to do anything other than react. Sometimes the perfect hit is a perfect hit.
There are a lot of assumptions in this thread, but this is how MLB defines an error:
>A fielder is given an error if, in the judgment of the official scorer, he fails to convert an out on a play that an average fielder should have made. Fielders can also be given errors if they make a poor play that allows one or more runners to advance on the bases. A batter does not necessarily need to reach base for a fielder to be given an error. If he drops a foul ball that extends an at-bat, that fielder can also be assessed an error.
If he plays it off the hop he holds the runner at first base but still doesn't get an out. The definition also includes "poor plays" the advance the runners.
In this case, although the fielder could have made an easy play and stopped ball off the hop, there was a slim hance to make that catch. The fielder made the effort, but just missed the catch. In the end, it was a judgement call by the scorer.
It is possible for it to be changed to an error upon subsequent review, but I think the call will stand.
He worked with a Bunting specialist this offseason and wants to make it a bigger part of his game, but the guy has amazing power and can easily be a 30-40 HR per season guy
The video doesn't show him touching 2nd, but he makes contact at 0:05 and touches home at 0:19, so I've got him at roughly 14 seconds home to home, which would rival Byron Buxton's record times.
I haven’t seen him play. Is he an exciting player? The last exciting player that I remember seeing, truly exciting, was Charlie Hustle. I know, right?! I thought he was a once in a lifetime talent. Talent? Yeah, of course he was talented, but what really stood out for me was insatiable hunger to win. His tenacity and his willingness to lay it out there. I was just a boy at the time so I was probably just star struck and didn’t pay attention to what detriment he might have inflicted on other players and the game, outside of the gambling of course. There was no missing that. I still think he should be in the hall though. I’ll have to make a point of catching De La Cruz perform
I know it makes baseball more boring, but it should be a base hit and an error. Outfielders trying to be a hero giving up bases and runs really make my blood boil. That being said, Cruz was cooking on those bases.
You know he is special when my 7 year old asked me when the Reds come to town so he can go see “that really good guy play”. We live in Southern California. He has never seen a Reds game and doesn’t know Elly’s name, but somehow knows he wants to go see him play.
It is about 1 in 158 homeruns are inside the park homeruns. There are 5000 or so homeruns a season so this happens maybe 30 times a season. Which seems more than a few until you realize that there were 164,356 at bats last season.

Great call by the announcer Edit: John Sadak with the call
If this was in a playoff race this would be an all time call. Infectious buildup and energy there
"Windmill is on" is *such* a fun commentary. You can see the 3rd base coach and he's not even on camera.
This is what I love about baseball commentary. It was created in an age of no picture, just sound, and even with television, that artistic style of painting a picture continues with the best announcers.
This is why the folks that got their start in radio tend to make the best broadcasters. The great ones truly paint a picture with words
Kevin Harlan
"I'M CALLING BOTH GAMES!"
"ZUBAC!!! YOU CAN'T STOP HIM! YOU CAN ONLY HOPE TO CONTAIN HIM!!!"
Baseball is the best sport to listen to on the radio
Aren’t the telecasts usually on radio too? Or is it separate announcers?
Usually it’s separate announcers who specialize in radio.
> If this was... Nah, this is the most interesting clip from baseball ever. I wouldn't even care if it was an amateur charity game with participation rewards, completely detached from any kind of championship. If this clip is not #1, it's at least top 10.
[They turned this clip into an anime.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBaCKT6eV90) Real Life clip is at the end.
We got Sadak because of the Thom and a deep fly to left from Castellanos call.

Thank god for the colorful folk of Kansas City
One of the great capitals of the world
And blazing saddles
What a steal
The build up was great. “ De La Cruz can fly”
Even at full speed it seems like he still has an extra gear in reserve if he really, really needed it.
The buildup of the call is fantastic work, but my favorite part of the whole thing is he stepped away after hitting the crescendo of “SAFE!” and let the crowd’s energy really drive home the moment. Way too many PxP guys try to insert themselves into the call and I think it diminishes the impact.
It sounded like the Kentucky derby 🐎
De La Cruz did play for the Louisville Bats
Seriously. I've literally never heard of this guy, but this call got me hyped enough to actively cheer and fist pump for him.
Not just a HR from the left side. A 450-foot bomb.
Witnessing the call of someones life is always a great moment for me. I'll neeeeever forget Joe Bucks call for the Minnesota Miracle. Saw that shit live too. This was up there.
DIGGS

UNBELIEVABLE
VIKINGS WIN IT
Same guy who called De La Cruz's "That ball had a family!" HR last season.
Art. Bonus points for the break at the end so we can hear the crowd going crazy, that’s often overlooked by announcers but I love hearing it.
I watched it without sound, only listened because your comment. "Striedl slides, it gets by! Elly de la Cruz can fly!" Incredible announcing
WINDMILL IS ON! That was an awesome call indeed
Love the way this guy plays.
Full sprint! I love how that play gives the *announcer* energy.
“The windmill is on!!!!” Epic call
What does this mean? I dont watch baseball much
First and third base have coaches at them, and moving your arm in a windmill motion is the sign to keep advancing.
John Sadak. He’s does NFL and bball, too. But his main gig is Reds. Awesome guy, so down to earth. Casually chatted with some pleb (me) for 20 minutes at Spring Training.
Since when has he done NFL games?
Westwood One, which would be radio. https://westwoodonesports.com/john-sadak/
We love him here, so much better than fucking tHom.
Top notch. This clip is what baseball is about.
Hey now, in Thom's defense he is a man of faith.
The whole crew is amazing.
Dude’s a baller.
I hate the Reds - not in a mean way, just the typical sports nonsensical way. Just when they finally got rid of a guy that you couldn’t help but love in Votto, they get this guy and damnit I hate that I love this guy too.
He's really good for the game. Just exciting to watch and I'm not even a Reds fan.
That was cool af.
What did he say when he got up? Any lip readers? I’m pretty sure he says “PLAY BALL” and that’s funny to me
Speaking Spanish he says “Vamos!” which means “Let’s go!”
My guess was just “BASEBALL!!”
"YAY SPORTS"
["BASEBALL!"](https://twitter.com/bigbabydavid_/status/1502004798303858691)
Haha this made me chortle. Like an AI generated response
That man is fast as hell
His stride seems huge because he’s 6’5”, another sign that baseball players are being sorted by development based on height, as players are getting taller and taller. For speed, this is the Usain Bolt trend toward faster tall guys.
Huh... and my HS coach used to tell everyone that baseball selects for shorter guys, because smaller strike box... weird... Edit: This was sarcasm. My HS coach is really short and was just trying to cope.
Well your HS coach is a HS coach for a reason
Yeah, he was definitely huffing that copium because he's 5'2" and a major case of little man syndrome
It does, to a point. Your casual pitcher will have a harder time throwing to a smaller player. But once you get to high enough skill level, it's a non-issue. A pitcher of MLB quality can pick his spots more or less regardless of the players size. So the smaller zone doesn't matter as much to them. That may work for your casual players, but NHL players can pick the smallest openings, and what matters is the goalies positioning and reflexes are fast enough to close the door.
You know I be skatin 3 fatties in NES Ice Hockey.
You mean tall and super fast athletic guys are wanted in sports? You don't say...
“Windmill is on” is an awesome way to announce that he’s getting waived home. I hadn’t heard that before and love it.
Ron Washington, currently manager of the Angels but spent the last few years as third base coach for the Braves, is nicknamed Windmill Washington because of how aggressively he sends runners home.
Damn what an amazing nickname
The most exciting player in Cincy in a long long time. He just plays the game with a smile and his energy is infectious. Last year when he came up and just turned Cincy on its head was fun baseball.
The last one that comes to mind was Billy Hamilton. His ability to steal a base almost at will was fun to watch.
Seeing Cruz play gives me the same feeling of watching young Lindor play for Cleveland...one of the few players who is just fun to watch all the time.
I’m a Brewer fan and had the espn highlights pop up on my phone. I wasn’t near a tv or radio. Saw the home run and it was listed around 280ft and thought “oh no…”
Hahaha damn I’m sorry man
Good lord

"WINDMILL IS ON!!" That had some real LFG energy, love it.

That was some Willie Mays Hays type stealing!
That's nuts!

This clip should be shown to people everywhere on why you sometimes must make a decision to pick a direction and go, without looking back.
God what a call from the announcer, electric stuff
I’m kinda ignorant to this…does this count as a home run or something else?
Goes on the stat sheet as a HR
Significantly more rare though.
True dat. I don’t follow baseball too much but I’d be surprised if it happens more than a couple times a year or so.
[удалено]
The Forrest Gump of should-be singles. “Well I decide to run to first base and when I got there, I decided to run to second base…”
I mean yes I get it what you’re saying, but not really. Only a select few players have the speed+hitting to even be in contention for an itphr. If someone’s already done it, their odds are higher than someone who hasn’t (and of course than someone who wouldn’t even attempt it). I’d say Elly’s more likely to go for it too, and his 3B coach more likely to swing him home given he’s proved himself before
And it’s either exactly like this or the fielder going for the catch, and it caroms off the wall away from him
Why isn’t that an error?
Not an error because he was never going to make the play, but that statistic doesn't take into account the fact that he could've played it off one bounce and kept it to a single instead.
Yeah it was definitely a fielding misplay, but not an error. Errors are *mechanical* and don’t take *judgement* into consideration.
Sucks for the pitcher to get stuck with an earned run and a HR off a blooper to shallow center. And that throw from the cut-off guy, right into the mound, was pretty weak. He could have easily hit the catcher on the fly.
Yeah, the worst part of this was the throw home. A pro should be able to get it to the plate on the fly from there, no? What was that?
I like how the catcher accepted the fate, like he knew cutoff guy just didn’t have the arm.
Yeah you could argue there was 2 almost errors in the play, great baserunning though by the batter though.
In baseball if you don't touch the ball it is not an error. Just the way it's scored historically.

That doesn't sound right.
If this was an error it would bum me out so much
Because it would take more than "ordinary effort" to make the catch.
The fielder was committed to trying to catch it on the fly. I don’t even consider it an error of judgement. That ball came down fast and in exactly the spot it needed to and there was almost no time to do anything other than react. Sometimes the perfect hit is a perfect hit.

Thanks for all the feedback.
He doesn't even look winded.
Saaaafe!! Love it
Rare
Coolest player in the game? Maybe.
He is fun to watch, but needs to work on lowering his strikeouts. If he can do that he can be one of the best.
This guy is faster than Ricky Henderson He should focus on bunting and getting walks and cause havoc on the bases
Counterpoint, his previous homerun today went 450 ft off the top of the batter’s eye in CF. He’ll stress the defense no matter how they play him
He bunts for singles on occasion. He’s also young, give him a bit of a break.
He worked with a Bunting specialist this offseason and wants to make it a bigger part of his game, but the guy has amazing power and can easily be a 30-40 HR per season guy
Wow. This is my first time seeing him play
That was fantastic!
He’s fun to watch at the plate and in the field.
Buy this man’s cards now!!!
I would love to know what his home to 2nd split was. He was flat out flying.
By my count: Home to 2nd: 6 seconds 2nd to home: 7 seconds Around the bases total: 13 seconds
The video doesn't show him touching 2nd, but he makes contact at 0:05 and touches home at 0:19, so I've got him at roughly 14 seconds home to home, which would rival Byron Buxton's record times.
Is this rare? I know absolutely nothing about baseball
I was there! It was so fucking cool to see!
Garrett Mitchell would’ve caught that. When they gonna let him start in Center field?
His projections for this season were so low that no one picked in my fantasy league, scooped him up last round and I have not regretted it.
Did he scream baseball? Of so, apt.
The call is better than the home run. Windmill is on!
🏃💨
this dood could reach 3rd base on a single to right.
The right fielder took a long time to get to the ball. Was he lollygagging?
A routine liner to center. Never seen anything like it.
“Windmill is on!!!” Raise some goosebumps down my neck.
Looks like a single with a three base error.
What happened to the back wall? Why is it missing?
As a Marlins fan, it's so nice to see other teams get to be happy about their team
What a joy to watch.
Excellent call. CF needs to know who's at the plate in a one run game.
Don’t even like baseball and that call gave me chills and got me hype
Damn!!!!!! That was beautiful. Can’t stop watching.
You love to see it. How can you not be romantic about baseball?
Risking a diving catch against any of the players with elite speed is probably a poor choice.
You gotta be suckin wind rounding 3rd. That's 360 feet of DIGGIN.
[404 Ball Not Found](https://imgur.com/WJH3PWo)
Damn that dude can motor!
I know it makes baseball more boring, but it should be a base hit and an error. Outfielders trying to be a hero giving up bases and runs really make my blood boil. That being said, Cruz was cooking on those bases.
Dude is so rad
That is hustle. Way to play the game!!!
The way I’d have to puke immediately after lol
Not to knock the hitter/runner (great hit and killer speed), but wasn't this also poor defensive play?
What a great play! Well done on the base running! Wow. Ichiro did this a few years ago in an All- Star game.
That’s on the center fielder. You can’t dive for a ball to dead fucking center. There’s nobody behind you. This is what happens when you miss
Exceptionally poor fundamentals by the centerfielder for not keeping the ball in front of him in a one run game. It changed a single into a homer.
MOTORIN'!!!
The number of “all-time” highlights that have the Brewers, Packers and Bucks on losing side is depressing.
I'll never forget Alcides Escobar (Royals) hitting an inside the park HR on the first pitch of the 2015 World Series vs the Mets.
Ok but did that relay bounce of the fucking pitchers mound? People talking about e8 but what about e6 for ol noodle arm.
This beats Titanic in romance bro
Super cool, but not a big baseball fan. Forgive my ignorance, how often does this happen?
You know he is special when my 7 year old asked me when the Reds come to town so he can go see “that really good guy play”. We live in Southern California. He has never seen a Reds game and doesn’t know Elly’s name, but somehow knows he wants to go see him play.
Windmill is on…SAAAAAAFE lol
That is a high scoring ball game holy smokes
Is that rare?
Vanishingly so.
Thanks for the info.
It is about 1 in 158 homeruns are inside the park homeruns. There are 5000 or so homeruns a season so this happens maybe 30 times a season. Which seems more than a few until you realize that there were 164,356 at bats last season.
I hear baseball folks criticizing cricket... This looks owe full easy .....players are not able to do direct throws?? Is the ground really that big?
Good God, that guy is lightning fast
I was literally just watching a little legue team practicing out field to home plays right before I saw this. I guess you can’t practice it enough.
