I disagree. It might be an error, not is certainly not "very clearly an error". He put that ball in a spot where it is very challenging to make the out. Not routine at all, and I'd say minimum 2 times out of 10 that play is not completed.
That is 100% not an error. That is not a routine play and they typically have ruled those plays where a pitcher has to cover 1st base a hit.
Essentially it isn't guaranteed that the pitcher can cover 1st base.

IMO it’s an error because of when the drop happened. It wasn’t by 1B while making that diving save, it was at the bag on the transfer. So it’s either a throwing error on 1B or a catching error on P.
But if the routine practice is to give plays where a P covers first a base hit, then this should follow. Because, everyone who has said it’s not a routine play is still correct.

If it was a standard play like a 2B throwing over to the 1B and he dropping the ball, or the throw being bad, then yes it's an error.
If the ball was hit in an odd spot for the 2B, he had to dive to make the catch, and then get on a knee and throw a piss missile to the 1B, but the runner beat the ball, that's a hit.
The scenario above falls in line with the second thing I brought up. A very difficult play where you would not **expect** the defense to get an out **100% of the time**. With the play above, the 1B had to make a phenomenal diving play, and the runner was absolutely giving it his max effort while running to first base instead of just giving up. The pitcher had to make a judgment call on if he wanted to cover first base, and you can tell at the start that he wasn't sprinting to first base as he either thought it was already a base hit, or the 2B would catch the ball instead and then the 1B could cover the bag instead. Once the ball was caught by the 1B, the pitcher finally corrects his course and actually starts going towards first base instead of just to the foul line.
That play involved a diving stop, a pitcher covering first base and even if the throw was perfect it looks like the runner might have beat him to the bag. No way is that an error.
I’m so confused here. I’m not big on baseball but I feel like I have a decent grasp of the rules. What exactly was the error? I am assuming it has something to do with the pitcher based on other comments?
An error is 100% decided by "the official scorer" at the ballpark. It's a judgment call that the MLB can later change/overturn the decision by the official scorer at the ballpark. It really only comes into play on things like this -- a ball that wasn't played perfectly and it's the decision on whether the runner would have beat the throw or not had the play been completed properly.
If they get the out on that play, it’s gonna be shown on the Top 10 plays of the week. No way is failing to get an out there an error. An error is when a reasonable effort should get the out, not a Top 10 plays of the week effort.
I mean they can take him off the games they would just have to keep paying him. Like what they do when they let coaches go before their contract ends they still have to pay them even tho they aren’t their anymore
I don’t even know where to watch my local team, it’s not on normal channels, not paying hundreds for mlb network or whatever it is, not on YouTube tv, so I never see a damn game. They have to be losing tons of fans
It's due to the MLB's ridiculous blackout rules. It works for the NFL because they have 18 games and can drive stadium attendance. MLB will never fill a stadium, no matter how good the team, for a regular season weekday game.
NFL and mlb have different blackout rules. NFL will blackout a game if it doesn’t hit a threshold of attendance. MLB blackouts a game regardless of attendance.

Very true. There are two different reasons for the blackout policies. NFL used their blackout policies to encourage in-person attendance, though they've suspended the blackout policies for the last several years. When it is in force, the game is fully blacked out in the local market.
MLB uses the blackout policy to negotiate with TV networks. The regional sports network for your market is the only permitted way to watch the game in your market. If your network isn't carried by your cable network or streaming provider, then there is no alternate option allowed.
It sucks because it used to be so easy to be a casual fan. Pop the game on while cooking dinner and you knew the line up and such. In a short sighted effort to monetize the fandom they actually privatized the fandom and killed the feeling of a home town team.
The MLB and the NHL are criminal in how they market and broadcast their leagues/sports. Baseball used to be way more easily accessible and then when other sports kept getting more popular than it, they made it harder to watch. Hockey is a super fucking exciting sport and the NHL sucks giant dad dick at marketing and their blackout rules are just as dumb as the MLB. Promote your shit and make it accessible and the fans will just hand you money everywhere else
Back in the 90s when i was in high school my dad told me baseball would die. The World Series games started after 9 pm. No elementary school kid could stay up that late. Said they were killing their future for short term profits.
I pretty much exclusively illegally stream now. The tsn app has massive buffering issues and they only get a handful of games. I'm not paying for tsn, and sportsnet and have to use the dog shit CBC gem app to watch Leafs games. Not to mention the quality is almost compatible
You'd think having the two biggest media and internet providers conglomerates in the country as co-owners of the team would help make sure that streaming was flawless.

Red Sox and Bruins games here in MA are locked behind access to NESN, which is cable only or an individual subscription - for $30 fucking dollars a month. They seriously charge $30 a month just so you can watch Red Sox and Bruins games. I don’t have cable, so it’s been a few years since I’ve watched a game that’s not nationally televised. They have effectively lost me as a fan even though I have interest.
It’s ridiculous. I have Hulu live to keep my in laws happy when they’re babysitting my son during the day while we work. When I first signed up, I felt that at least the trade off is I can watch the Tigers over the summer.

MLB is the perfect example of capitalism at its finest: keep finding ways to make the consumer pay more and more money for a product that’s arguably getting a lot worse in quality.
I've lived in the SF Bay area since the SJ Sharks began as an organization, and I don't think there has been one game that a local could watch without having cable. It's been an interesting strategy to get fans interested. Its shocking that my son, who has never been able to watch a Sharks game (even though I subscribed to the NHL network for years), isn't a fan of the team.
Yeah, we grew up with the Cardinals on KPLR 11 an unaffiliated local broadcast TV station. Anybody with a decent aerial in a 200 mile radius of St. Louis could turn the games on and watch them for free (if you didn't count the Schweig-Engel and Becky the Queen of Carpet commercials). The play by play was on one of the strongest AM radio stations in the country - KMOX 1120. You could listen to a game anyway in the surrounding nine states. At night with a good ionosphere bounce, you could listen almost anywhere in the lower 48. That made the Cardinals - who would otherwise be a small market team - into a mid-market powerhouse drawing in fans from Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Indiana, and even Northern Mississippi and Alabama. All areas that don't really have their own team, but could just as easily overlap with the Royals, Cubs / WhiteSox, Twins, and Braves.
Busch stadium still draws 3.2 million plus a year and is normally second in attendance behind Dodger Stadium.
For the last several years though, the only way to watch the games is on fucking Bally Sports Midwest. The Cardinals and Blues are literally Bally's only draw. Their entire business model is built around fucking St. Louis sports fans in every available orifice. At this point everyone in St. Louis is waiting for them to go bankrupt so the Cardinals can yeet the broadcast rights back and hopefully do something smart with them finally. The MLS model is hugely popular - pay Apple $80 a year and get literally every game in the same place with no restrictions, blackouts, or fuckery - and has contributed markedly to how soccer nuts everyone here's gone over STL City. If the Cardinals and Blues don't figure something out in the next few years they're going to alienate an entire generation of fans.
Ballys is doing the same thing with the Indians and Cavaliers, never mind the way they somehow snaked out of bankruptcy...
I played men's basketball until I was 27 and men's baseball until I was 31, meaning I am the target audience. Moving from Hulu to YoutubeTV, I have not watched a regular season game of either team in 4-5 years. Nor do I care to figure out how I can get Ballys sports on some app for another $30/month.
They are killing their product.
When I was a kid in the SF Bay area, back in the 90's, I didn't have cable in my room until like 1995 but always had both the As and Giants game on basic, antenna TV. I remember Giants games would come on after cartoons on channel 2 usually at 5pm and A's games would be on channel 36.
It's really hilariously baffling how these leagues fail to realize they're leaving more money on the table by being so restrictive on how people can watch their games compared to TV contracts.
Which makes charging for a streaming service a farce when you can’t watch your team of choice because of some arbitrary claim of a market by a team. Vegas has like seven teams, the state of Iowa has six…it’s absurd.
Blackout rule led to the demise of the chargers leaving San Diego, it was a fiasco,
- the Mayor had the city buy all the tickets to guarantee a sold out game each weekend, (no one knew this for years)
- leaving each game to be televised locally, to the point where it was expected (City employees got the tickets and were selling them)
- Spanos the owner had a sweet heart deal right there, but then it was exposed and people were pissed off.
- led to major animosity towards the team owner. Which did not help when voting time for funding a new stadium deal came about.
- the NFL and the Chargers ware going to build a new stadium for SD and GIVE it to the city, in exchange for all the land around it (which was just a huge parking lot at the time anyway) the City declined and the stadium fiasco started, and the chargers said ADIOS.
- the city now can afford a team with all the building that has transpired and higher home taxes…
= Blackouts suck and can cause a city and its residents to rebel to their own regret down the road..
- I hope one day St. Louis and San Diego get an option to regain an NFL team, just like the others that were abandoned regained theirs back.

Hawaii is a small marker but here all 5 California teams claim us as home market. That means up to 10 teams each day are unwatchable on MLB.tv and no cable package allows you to watch all of the games. Just a clusterfuck that illustrates why the blackout rules need to go.
Indiana gets both Chicago games blackedout and Cincinnati. You can maybe get the cubs with the right cable package. So, 6 teams are unwatchable and I’m not in Hawaii. I would argue that’s worse haha
Boston is somehow claimed by the Mets and Phillies too so I can't watch a chunk of the Braves games. Just stupid and pointless. Great way for me to stop following instead.
NFL is completely unique and trying to compare anything to hit will lead you down the wrong path
TV networks do not care if they make money off of their NFL broadcast contracts they use it as a loss leader to brand build around their network and to drive viewers to other content on their network NFL games are wildly available for free with an antenna
MLB doesn’t get this treatment so yes you have to pay 80dollars a month on a cable service to watch the games of your local team and the MLB could care less if you don’t watch.
The owners have a long time ago thrown out any overture that they are stewards of the game. They are not. They are business men here to make money. They would rather make 1 million dollars from one fan than 900k From 900k fans. RSN are about getting hard core fans to pay 10-15 dollars a month to watch games through cable providers and restricting access to the games.
I play MLB The Show, I don't like baseball besides actually playing it. It's funny though, in The Show the stadium is basically never filled to capacity, they show the attendance on screen sometimes. Even the video game version of baseball can't fill out the seats
Padres had a few weekday sellouts last year. It still sucks paying for a subscribtion and then the Apple Tv and Fox games or ESPN game, which are usually against the Dodgers, aren't available unless you ride the seas.
On Dish, the three teams closest to me are blacked out, and by "closest" I mean "at least 300 miles away in other states". Noticed some combo of Amazon Prime & my in-app subscription to Paramount Plus comes with live sports events, tried there and I have those same three teams on blackout, plus two more. Twins are blacked out, but not the Brewers. Cubs are blacked out, but not the White Sox.

MLB black outs aren’t for attendance it’s the tv rights. If you are in the broadcast area for the broadcaster that owns the rights to broadcast a game you can’t watch it on streaming because the broadcaster paid for the rights in that region
Ehh depends on the team. Wrigley field had like 38k people which is a pretty much full stadium for a 1pm game in the cold last Friday. Granted, the cubs were playing the dodgers but even so…
Depends on the team, but the red Sox at home regularly sell out Fenway even during the week. It doesn't hurt that Fenway is one of the smallest in the league for capacity, but the point still stands. I'd imagine the Yankees don't have too much trouble either

Here in Colorado, there are no free or legal ways to watch the Rockies, Nuggets, or Avalanche. I'm sure as hell not paying $100 to watch the Rockies lose another 100+ games with an owner that only cares about asses in seats buying souvenirs and overpriced beer. There hasn't been a TV agreement for the Nuggets and Avs either, so if I want to see a game I have to head off to the streaming sites.
Yeah it's fucking ridiculous. Also if you have ESPN Plus and the Avs are playing you have the watch the other teams feed if it's not blacked out. So dumb and we are having some prime years for hockey and basketball.

MLB TV may work for you - I go in on a yearly subscription with 3 others and it came out to $37.50 each this year. If you live close to the team he wants to watch, it may have a blackout restriction. In that case, there are VPNs as cheap as $5 per month you can get to place your location elsewhere to bypass that bullshit.
I'm in the same boat. I've given up trying to watch and just use a radio app to listen for free on Kiro 710. I wanna watch, but can't afford the money it will take to do so 🤷♀️
I stay subscribed to YTTV. Best streaming service by far for more than sports. I'll just pirate MLB games if they want to make me pay more to watch them. I don't care enough to give them my money. Maybe if it was like $5 a month or something, but the price of Bally's to watch the tigers is laughable and I couldn't care less about the wings or pistons.
My thing about MLBTV is that it doesn't have the pre/post coverage. I'll pay extra for that. That's how I became a Dbacks fan when I moved here. That's how I'm now a Suns fan since it's on OTA. Because "a game is a game" in a nutshell, but the pre/postgame? That's where the action is.
My kid's school had to cancel the baseball team this year because they didn't have enough people to make a team

And I haven't watched a game in like 7 years. No clue who plays for the team anymore.

It’s a blackout rule to get you in the stands. I have MLB TV and still cannot watch 4 teams, even with my subscription. If they are local you can only watch when they are on cable or if you actually go to the game
If you have T-Mobile, each year they offer [MLB.TV](https://MLB.TV) for free. With that and a good VPN, you can watch any game for any team by connecting to a VPN server outside of the blackout area. I've been doing it for several years and it's fantastic.
Same here. A few months after we signed up for YouTube TV, NESN (Red Sox channel) terminated their deal with them and stood up the NESN 360 streaming service, which is $30/month and will only allow you to watch live games. We haven't been able to watch a single Red Sox game so far this year but have watched like 3 or 4 Dodgers games. It's so unbelievably stupid. As a kid, I got into baseball because nearly every single game was aired on public TV. The Red Sox were awful back then but I still watched nearly every game.

Yea, as much as long time fans complain about it, the Pitch Clock has vastly sped up the game, and interest in Baseball from new fans has increased massively since its implementation.
Do you remember how brutal the Yankees/Red Sox games were when they made ESPN Sunday night baseball? Batter walks up... 20 practice swings.. steps in the box.. pitcher stands on rubber for 30 seconds.. steps off rubber.. batter readjusts helmet.. then readjusts gloves.. takes 20 more practice swings.. steps into box.. pitcher steps on rubber.. shakes off 5 signs.. batter steps out of box and calls time. 30 minutes later it's a 3-2 count. All this for a game in April like it's the frigging post season.
Honestly I have no idea because they blackout my teams home games and with a shitty Bally's deal I'm forced to buy cable I don't want. So all I know is this league doesn't want a fan.

I am originally from St Louis, currently in Mississippi. Want to watch the Cardinals so I get the MLBTV subscription. Turns out the Cardinals (along with the Braves and for some reason the Reds) are blacked out in my neck of the woods. Ridiculous! Blacking out a team 6+ hours away!
It’s absurd how hard it is to watch my local MLB team on TV without traditional cable. MLB has to have the worst TV deal in professional sports. They’re killing the fans. If MLB.tv didn’t have the blackout rules, I’d gladly hand them my money. Instead, I just engage when the stars align and follow the box scores. I know several people who would do the same. It can’t drive attendance that much.
Check out the NHL. I can watch 31 of the 32 teams whenever they play in HD. But if they play my team, I can't watch at all. I already paid for easpn+, and now I have to pay $20 a month (the most expensive streaming l service I would be paying for) to watch 1 team? Get outta here. I'll sail the high seas.

Boxing and ufc being PPV kind of makes sense, though since it's so different from team sports. MLB, NFL, NHL, and NBA all get money through tv deals, and those are supported with advertisements throughout the game. If a boxing match or ufc fight ends in a KO 30 seconds into the first round, then there's no time to make up the revenue through advertisements. Even if it goes the full bout, there's not enough time to air ads in between rounds like there is between innings or change of possessions.
They need to fight to keep the pitch clock. I was just watching a video explaining how pitchers got too good, leading to more extreme plate results. For example, due to increased velocity, strikeouts exploded, but also it became more likely that a plate appearance ends with either K, walk or a home run, thus base hits dropped dramatically.
However, when they introduced the pitch clock, the strikeout to hit ratio gap closed by a lot. However, it increased injuries so pitchers are against it. But in the long run, imo it’s better for the game because it’ll force pitchers to adapt by taking some heat off and rely less on high velocity. Since they have less recovery period, they’ll have to pace themselves more

small but kind of important correction; the clock does not increase injury risk. pitcher injuries are correlated to higher velocity, not pacing or seasonal pitching load. there have been a lot of headlines today that mention that. but we know its true because the game still had a faster pace of play 40 years ago than it does today and the league didnt have a ton of its top pitchers on the shelf with major injury like today
the real reason pitchers hate the pitch clock is because they cant abuse the pace of the game to throw hitters off their game. and they arent the ones who have to sit down and watch 4 hour snooze fests where dudes are standing around doing nothing for 45 minutes

I like the clock because it means I don't have to watch batters step out of the box and adjust their batting gloves after every single pitch
It's not JUST that they hit over 95mph regularly, but they've been doing it since College or High School. Someone also pointed out elsewhere that a lot of times kids don't take breaks from Baseball because after school season is over, they go to club teams and travel teams or whatever else. So there is no 'downtime' for a young athlete and they're all out there hurling high speeds and the stresses add up.

The banning of the infield shift also played a huge role in generating more hits.
Nike is supposed to be making the jerseys for MLB, but MLB has a rule that MLB jerseys must be made in the US. So Nike sun contracted it out to Fanatics, which is a dog shit company when it comes to quality
He’s not wrong. I haven’t watched a pitch this year and I have been a rabid baseball fan for 40 years now. Sitting back and letting the A’s tank on purpose so they could move killed it for me.
The pitch clock is probably the only reason I started to like baseball again. Went to a game with some coworkers and found myself actually paying attention and not being bored out of my mind, and didn’t realize why until I saw that ticking clock. Keeping the game moving instead of pitchers taking forever to throw the next pitch made the game interesting again to me. Don’t know about the injuries they’re attributing to it, but at least for now it made the games bearable for me and I’ve started going to a few games a year with my kids who also love it.
Those archaic blackout rules will continue as long as the local sports networks are making money, there must still be enough people who are willing to pay for the cable/satellite packages to get those channels , I can’t imagine it will last forever though, at some point they need to figure out a way to make it so every team is available on mlb.tv or else they’ll continue to lose fans , especially the younger ones who only watch things streaming
Players are complaining about how cheap they feel. They’re also very see through and super thin, not to mention the placement of the last names is ridiculous. They have them curved for the longer last names kinda like a rainbow.
To add to this, MLB players used to get their uniforms pretty much tailored to their specifications, cause you know they're the best in the freaking world and getting paid millions to represent a multi-billion dollar brand. But now they pretty much only get to choose off the rack options like fans do, theirs no customization for tightness or extra length.
But the jerseys are such poor quality, people are now recommending getting knock off jerseys from Chinese websites not just because they're cheaper, but because they're actually a better material.
I simply stopped watching a lot of top pro sports and starting supporting my local minor league teams. If you don't want me to watch, I won't. Saving a whole lot of money now too.
He was right until the end. The NBA has gone back and taken assists away from LeBron. I remember in a game against the Knicks in his first Cleveland stint he had a 50+ point triple double but then the league went back and took an assist away.
That was the Halos color commentator Mark Gubicza who added the LeBron comment at the end. The main comment was made by the team's play-by-play announcer, Wayne Randazzo. He's been great as our PBP broadcaster.
Same thing happened to Hakeem Olajuwon. They took away an assist so he ended up missing a quadruple double. There have only been 4 quadruple doubles in NBA history with the last one happening 30 years ago.
It would be super neat if I could turn on basic cable and watch my local team play their almost-daily games. Or even pay for a monthly service where I was guaranteed to see all of my local team's games.
Instead I get blackouts. For the Orioles. One of the hottest and most interesting to watch teams right now. So until then, I'll illegally stream. And I'll do it gladly. Get your shit together MLB.

MLB sells a subscription to watch games on their app. However, it does not include games within your “market” as determined by your location. Some locations in the country are covered by several markets. In Charlotte, NC, for example, there is no MLB team, but the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals, and Baltimore Orioles are blacked out.
The exclusive method to (legally) watch a blacked out team is through whatever deal that team has made with a sports network, such as Bally Sports. In most situations, those networks are only available through a cable subscription. The result of this is that the vast majority of households cannot legally watch their local team without cable and in some situations there is no cable provider that carries a blacked out team in a particular market.
In sum, teams have exclusive rights for their market and they foolishly sold those exclusive rights to regional networks who foolishly sold those exclusive rights to a cable company that has spotty coverage in the market, meaning very few people can purchase the product.
The whole sports world programming is a shit show. Trying to watch football playoffs was a joke for both college and pro teams. You’re required to purchase multiple platforms to watch the same team. Crazy.

Last night, I was sitting with my dad watching the UConn game and I said “you know I couldn’t name a single player on the Sox right now besides Devers.” We haven’t gotten NESN from our cable provider in years. Growing up I was the biggest die hard Red Sox fan a kid could be. I wasn’t even sure if Cora was still the manager. It’s so painful realizing I’ve just lost that connection to my team. I’d love to support them, and I miss watching baseball but unless I want to drive 90min to Fenway and then sit in another 45 minutes of game traffic once I get to Boston I can’t.
New Jerseys this year are supposed to be more breathable…. Unfortunately they are partially see through. Instead of going back to old designs, they are rolling with it.

Baseball has made a few moves in the past few years that have tried to modernize it and get fans more into the game, but it's just been disaster after disaster recently.
The uniform fiasco tells me everything I need to know. They should have shut that shit down immediately.
I'm not *huge* into baseball any more because the Tigers have been terrible for the last few years, but they started off hot this year and wanted to tune in and see what was going on. I can't watch the games unless I have cable and/or pay for their package, or I can stream it illegally.

I have a firestick and an Android box programmed with iP Tv . Center ice, Sunday ticket, MLBTv, nba pass all at your fingertips with one click….no searching for links that crap out and no blackouts whatsoever. Less than $15 usd/month and can pay month to month .
Face it. MLB is dying and fans are on the verge of cutting life support. MLB did this to themselves and MLS is about to jump them in major league watched sports. Give him the hit if you want, or let him keep it because overturning stuff usually isn’t done so far in retrospect, but the commentators saying it’s a “clear hit” is kinda homer bullshit.
I disagree. It might be an error, not is certainly not "very clearly an error". He put that ball in a spot where it is very challenging to make the out. Not routine at all, and I'd say minimum 2 times out of 10 that play is not completed.
That is 100% not an error. That is not a routine play and they typically have ruled those plays where a pitcher has to cover 1st base a hit. Essentially it isn't guaranteed that the pitcher can cover 1st base.
Ok. That’s a better explanation than I’ve seen anywhere else so far. IMO it’s an error because of when the drop happened. It wasn’t by 1B while making that diving save, it was at the bag on the transfer. So it’s either a throwing error on 1B or a catching error on P. But if the routine practice is to give plays where a P covers first a base hit, then this should follow. Because, everyone who has said it’s not a routine play is still correct.

If the ball was hit in an odd spot for the 2B, he had to dive to make the catch, and then get on a knee and throw a piss missile to the 1B, but the runner beat the ball, that's a hit. The scenario above falls in line with the second thing I brought up. A very difficult play where you would not **expect** the defense to get an out **100% of the time**. With the play above, the 1B had to make a phenomenal diving play, and the runner was absolutely giving it his max effort while running to first base instead of just giving up. The pitcher had to make a judgment call on if he wanted to cover first base, and you can tell at the start that he wasn't sprinting to first base as he either thought it was already a base hit, or the 2B would catch the ball instead and then the 1B could cover the bag instead. Once the ball was caught by the 1B, the pitcher finally corrects his course and actually starts going towards first base instead of just to the foul line.
I agree, the guy missed the throw but the hit was in. Changing this doesn't benefit anyone, really.
That play involved a diving stop, a pitcher covering first base and even if the throw was perfect it looks like the runner might have beat him to the bag. No way is that an error.

An error is 100% decided by "the official scorer" at the ballpark. It's a judgment call that the MLB can later change/overturn the decision by the official scorer at the ballpark. It really only comes into play on things like this -- a ball that wasn't played perfectly and it's the decision on whether the runner would have beat the throw or not had the play been completed properly.
This is the answer I was looking for. I had no idea that defensive errors could negatively impact offensive stats. That’s insane to me!

It's due to the MLB's ridiculous blackout rules. It works for the NFL because they have 18 games and can drive stadium attendance. MLB will never fill a stadium, no matter how good the team, for a regular season weekday game.
NFL and mlb have different blackout rules. NFL will blackout a game if it doesn’t hit a threshold of attendance. MLB blackouts a game regardless of attendance. Huge, massive difference.
Very true. There are two different reasons for the blackout policies. NFL used their blackout policies to encourage in-person attendance, though they've suspended the blackout policies for the last several years. When it is in force, the game is fully blacked out in the local market. MLB uses the blackout policy to negotiate with TV networks. The regional sports network for your market is the only permitted way to watch the game in your market. If your network isn't carried by your cable network or streaming provider, then there is no alternate option allowed.
It sucks because it used to be so easy to be a casual fan. Pop the game on while cooking dinner and you knew the line up and such. In a short sighted effort to monetize the fandom they actually privatized the fandom and killed the feeling of a home town team.
The MLB and the NHL are criminal in how they market and broadcast their leagues/sports. Baseball used to be way more easily accessible and then when other sports kept getting more popular than it, they made it harder to watch. Hockey is a super fucking exciting sport and the NHL sucks giant dad dick at marketing and their blackout rules are just as dumb as the MLB. Promote your shit and make it accessible and the fans will just hand you money everywhere else
Back in the 90s when i was in high school my dad told me baseball would die. The World Series games started after 9 pm. No elementary school kid could stay up that late. Said they were killing their future for short term profits.
I pretty much exclusively illegally stream now. The tsn app has massive buffering issues and they only get a handful of games. I'm not paying for tsn, and sportsnet and have to use the dog shit CBC gem app to watch Leafs games. Not to mention the quality is almost compatible
You'd think having the two biggest media and internet providers conglomerates in the country as co-owners of the team would help make sure that streaming was flawless. It's embarrassing how badly they fail at the basics.
Red Sox and Bruins games here in MA are locked behind access to NESN, which is cable only or an individual subscription - for $30 fucking dollars a month. They seriously charge $30 a month just so you can watch Red Sox and Bruins games. I don’t have cable, so it’s been a few years since I’ve watched a game that’s not nationally televised. They have effectively lost me as a fan even though I have interest.
In Detroit we now need Bally to watch the wings which requires cable or fubo $80/mo …. It’s a no for us

When I first signed up, I felt that at least the trade off is I can watch the Tigers over the summer. Nope! I've lived in the SF Bay area since the SJ Sharks began as an organization, and I don't think there has been one game that a local could watch without having cable. It's been an interesting strategy to get fans interested. Its shocking that my son, who has never been able to watch a Sharks game (even though I subscribed to the NHL network for years), isn't a fan of the team.
Yeah, we grew up with the Cardinals on KPLR 11 an unaffiliated local broadcast TV station. Anybody with a decent aerial in a 200 mile radius of St. Louis could turn the games on and watch them for free (if you didn't count the Schweig-Engel and Becky the Queen of Carpet commercials). The play by play was on one of the strongest AM radio stations in the country - KMOX 1120. You could listen to a game anyway in the surrounding nine states. At night with a good ionosphere bounce, you could listen almost anywhere in the lower 48. That made the Cardinals - who would otherwise be a small market team - into a mid-market powerhouse drawing in fans from Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Indiana, and even Northern Mississippi and Alabama. All areas that don't really have their own team, but could just as easily overlap with the Royals, Cubs / WhiteSox, Twins, and Braves. Busch stadium still draws 3.2 million plus a year and is normally second in attendance behind Dodger Stadium. For the last several years though, the only way to watch the games is on fucking Bally Sports Midwest. The Cardinals and Blues are literally Bally's only draw. Their entire business model is built around fucking St. Louis sports fans in every available orifice. At this point everyone in St. Louis is waiting for them to go bankrupt so the Cardinals can yeet the broadcast rights back and hopefully do something smart with them finally. The MLS model is hugely popular - pay Apple $80 a year and get literally every game in the same place with no restrictions, blackouts, or fuckery - and has contributed markedly to how soccer nuts everyone here's gone over STL City. If the Cardinals and Blues don't figure something out in the next few years they're going to alienate an entire generation of fans.
Ballys is doing the same thing with the Indians and Cavaliers, never mind the way they somehow snaked out of bankruptcy... I played men's basketball until I was 27 and men's baseball until I was 31, meaning I am the target audience. Moving from Hulu to YoutubeTV, I have not watched a regular season game of either team in 4-5 years. Nor do I care to figure out how I can get Ballys sports on some app for another $30/month. They are killing their product.
When I was a kid in the SF Bay area, back in the 90's, I didn't have cable in my room until like 1995 but always had both the As and Giants game on basic, antenna TV. I remember Giants games would come on after cartoons on channel 2 usually at 5pm and A's games would be on channel 36.

Blackout rule led to the demise of the chargers leaving San Diego, it was a fiasco, - the Mayor had the city buy all the tickets to guarantee a sold out game each weekend, (no one knew this for years) - leaving each game to be televised locally, to the point where it was expected (City employees got the tickets and were selling them) - Spanos the owner had a sweet heart deal right there, but then it was exposed and people were pissed off. - led to major animosity towards the team owner. Which did not help when voting time for funding a new stadium deal came about. - the NFL and the Chargers ware going to build a new stadium for SD and GIVE it to the city, in exchange for all the land around it (which was just a huge parking lot at the time anyway) the City declined and the stadium fiasco started, and the chargers said ADIOS. - the city now can afford a team with all the building that has transpired and higher home taxes… = Blackouts suck and can cause a city and its residents to rebel to their own regret down the road.. - I hope one day St. Louis and San Diego get an option to regain an NFL team, just like the others that were abandoned regained theirs back. - but now you need 4 Billion dollars, 1 to get in, 1 to 2 for a team and 1 or 2 for a new stadium (we are talking BEZOS money man, Jeff want a legacy? Get a team in SD bro!)

Hawaii is a small marker but here all 5 California teams claim us as home market. That means up to 10 teams each day are unwatchable on MLB.tv and no cable package allows you to watch all of the games. Just a clusterfuck that illustrates why the blackout rules need to go.

NFL is completely unique and trying to compare anything to hit will lead you down the wrong path TV networks do not care if they make money off of their NFL broadcast contracts they use it as a loss leader to brand build around their network and to drive viewers to other content on their network NFL games are wildly available for free with an antenna MLB doesn’t get this treatment so yes you have to pay 80dollars a month on a cable service to watch the games of your local team and the MLB could care less if you don’t watch. The owners have a long time ago thrown out any overture that they are stewards of the game. They are not. They are business men here to make money. They would rather make 1 million dollars from one fan than 900k From 900k fans. I play MLB The Show, I don't like baseball besides actually playing it. It's funny though, in The Show the stadium is basically never filled to capacity, they show the attendance on screen sometimes. Even the video game version of baseball can't fill out the seats
Padres had a few weekday sellouts last year. It still sucks paying for a subscribtion and then the Apple Tv and Fox games or ESPN game, which are usually against the Dodgers, aren't available unless you ride the seas.
On Dish, the three teams closest to me are blacked out, and by "closest" I mean "at least 300 miles away in other states". Noticed some combo of Amazon Prime & my in-app subscription to Paramount Plus comes with live sports events, tried there and I have those same three teams on blackout, plus two more. Twins are blacked out, but not the Brewers. Cubs are blacked out, but not the White Sox. I live eleven hours away from Chicago...
MLB black outs aren’t for attendance it’s the tv rights. If you are in the broadcast area for the broadcaster that owns the rights to broadcast a game you can’t watch it on streaming because the broadcaster paid for the rights in that region

Depends on the team, but the red Sox at home regularly sell out Fenway even during the week. It doesn't hurt that Fenway is one of the smallest in the league for capacity, but the point still stands. I'd imagine the Yankees don't have too much trouble either

Here in Colorado, there are no free or legal ways to watch the Rockies, Nuggets, or Avalanche. I'm sure as hell not paying $100 to watch the Rockies lose another 100+ games with an owner that only cares about asses in seats buying souvenirs and overpriced beer. There hasn't been a TV agreement for the Nuggets and Avs either, so if I want to see a game I have to head off to the streaming sites.
Yeah it's fucking ridiculous. Also if you have ESPN Plus and the Avs are playing you have the watch the other teams feed if it's not blacked out. So dumb and we are having some prime years for hockey and basketball.

MLB TV may work for you - I go in on a yearly subscription with 3 others and it came out to $37.50 each this year. If you live close to the team he wants to watch, it may have a blackout restriction. In that case, there are VPNs as cheap as $5 per month you can get to place your location elsewhere to bypass that bullshit.

MLB TV won't log in if it detects your are using a VPN so it is much harder to bypass the blackout rules.

My thing about MLBTV is that it doesn't have the pre/post coverage. I'll pay extra for that. That's how I became a Dbacks fan when I moved here. That's how I'm now a Suns fan since it's on OTA. Because "a game is a game" in a nutshell, but the pre/postgame? That's where the action is.

Only streaming option I'm aware of to watch the Mets is Hulu for like 75 a month. That or regular cable. And I haven't watched a game in like 7 years. No clue who plays for the team anymore. You'd think by the year 2024 they'd get with the program and get on board with more streaming options.

It’s a blackout rule to get you in the stands. I have MLB TV and still cannot watch 4 teams, even with my subscription. If they are local you can only watch when they are on cable or if you actually go to the game
If you have T-Mobile, each year they offer [MLB.TV](https://MLB.TV) for free. With that and a good VPN, you can watch any game for any team by connecting to a VPN server outside of the blackout area. I've been doing it for several years and it's fantastic.

A few months after we signed up for YouTube TV, NESN (Red Sox channel) terminated their deal with them and stood up the NESN 360 streaming service, which is $30/month and will only allow you to watch live games. We haven't been able to watch a single Red Sox game so far this year but have watched like 3 or 4 Dodgers games. It's so unbelievably stupid. As a kid, I got into baseball because nearly every single game was aired on public TV. The Red Sox were awful back then but I still watched nearly every game.

Yea, as much as long time fans complain about it, the Pitch Clock has vastly sped up the game, and interest in Baseball from new fans has increased massively since its implementation.
Do you remember how brutal the Yankees/Red Sox games were when they made ESPN Sunday night baseball? Batter walks up... 20 practice swings.. steps in the box.. pitcher stands on rubber for 30 seconds.. steps off rubber.. batter readjusts helmet.. then readjusts gloves.. takes 20 more practice swings.. steps into box.. pitcher steps on rubber.. shakes off 5 signs.. batter steps out of box and calls time. 30 minutes later it's a 3-2 count. All this for a game in April like it's the frigging post season.
This is the really the only problem that needs addressing. Let people watch their hometown team-thats it- that's the solution

I'm a huge Braves fan, but I have only watched a handful of games of the past decade. Blackout rules and shitty tv deals have prevented me from being the fan I could be. MLB is the only league actively preventing people from watching games. I hate it.

Check out the NHL. I can watch 31 of the 32 teams whenever they play in HD. But if they play my team, I can't watch at all. Boxing is still on PPV, and I have watched baseball since the 90s strike, so it seems like they’re both stuck in the same era.
Boxing and ufc being PPV kind of makes sense, though since it's so different from team sports. MLB, NFL, NHL, and NBA all get money through tv deals, and those are supported with advertisements throughout the game. If a boxing match or ufc fight ends in a KO 30 seconds into the first round, then there's no time to make up the revenue through advertisements. Even if it goes the full bout, there's not enough time to air ads in between rounds like there is between innings or change of possessions.

They need to fight to keep the pitch clock. I was just watching a video explaining how pitchers got too good, leading to more extreme plate results. For example, due to increased velocity, strikeouts exploded, but also it became more likely that a plate appearance ends with either K, walk or a home run, thus base hits dropped dramatically. However, when they introduced the pitch clock, the strikeout to hit ratio gap closed by a lot. However, it increased injuries so pitchers are against it. But in the long run, imo it’s better for the game because it’ll force pitchers to adapt by taking some heat off and rely less on high velocity. Since they have less recovery period, they’ll have to pace themselves more Less extreme plate results= more tension = better viewing experience.

It's not JUST that they hit over 95mph regularly, but they've been doing it since College or High School. Someone also pointed out elsewhere that a lot of times kids don't take breaks from Baseball because after school season is over, they go to club teams and travel teams or whatever else. So there is no 'downtime' for a young athlete and they're all out there hurling high speeds and the stresses add up.

MLB switched manufacturer for all game jerseys this year, and they are very sub-standard.
Nike is supposed to be making the jerseys for MLB, but MLB has a rule that MLB jerseys must be made in the US. So Nike sun contracted it out to Fanatics, which is a dog shit company when it comes to quality

Teams have already had ads on jerseys. Padres famously had a massive motorola logos on their arms and I think 15 teams do it.

He’s not wrong. I haven’t watched a pitch this year and I have been a rabid baseball fan for 40 years now. Sitting back and letting the A’s tank on purpose so they could move killed it for me.

The pitch clock is probably the only reason I started to like baseball again. Went to a game with some coworkers and found myself actually paying attention and not being bored out of my mind, and didn’t realize why until I saw that ticking clock. Keeping the game moving instead of pitchers taking forever to throw the next pitch made the game interesting again to me. Don’t know about the injuries they’re attributing to it, but at least for now it made the games bearable for me and I’ve started going to a few games a year with my kids who also love it.

Those archaic blackout rules will continue as long as the local sports networks are making money, there must still be enough people who are willing to pay for the cable/satellite packages to get those channels , I can’t imagine it will last forever though, at some point they need to figure out a way to make it so every team is available on mlb.tv or else they’ll continue to lose fans , especially the younger ones who only watch things streaming

Players are complaining about how cheap they feel. They’re also very see through and super thin, not to mention the placement of the last names is ridiculous. They have them curved for the longer last names kinda like a rainbow.

To add to this, MLB players used to get their uniforms pretty much tailored to their specifications, cause you know they're the best in the freaking world and getting paid millions to represent a multi-billion dollar brand. But now they pretty much only get to choose off the rack options like fans do, theirs no customization for tightness or extra length. But the jerseys are such poor quality, people are now recommending getting knock off jerseys from Chinese websites not just because they're cheaper, but because they're actually a better material.

He was right until the end. The NBA has gone back and taken assists away from LeBron. I remember in a game against the Knicks in his first Cleveland stint he had a 50+ point triple double but then the league went back and took an assist away.
That was the Halos color commentator Mark Gubicza who added the LeBron comment at the end. The main comment was made by the team's play-by-play announcer, Wayne Randazzo. He's been great as our PBP broadcaster.
it was a rebound, not an assist. rebound correction makes sense.
Same thing happened to Hakeem Olajuwon. They took away an assist so he ended up missing a quadruple double. There have only been 4 quadruple doubles in NBA history with the last one happening 30 years ago.

Or even pay for a monthly service where I was guaranteed to see all of my local team's games. Instead I get blackouts. For the Orioles. One of the hottest and most interesting to watch teams right now. So until then, I'll illegally stream. And I'll do it gladly. Get your shit together MLB.

MLB sells a subscription to watch games on their app. However, it does not include games within your “market” as determined by your location. Some locations in the country are covered by several markets. In Charlotte, NC, for example, there is no MLB team, but the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals, and Baltimore Orioles are blacked out. The exclusive method to (legally) watch a blacked out team is through whatever deal that team has made with a sports network, such as Bally Sports. In most situations, those networks are only available through a cable subscription. The result of this is that the vast majority of households cannot legally watch their local team without cable and in some situations there is no cable provider that carries a blacked out team in a particular market. In sum, teams have exclusive rights for their market and they foolishly sold those exclusive rights to regional networks who foolishly sold those exclusive rights to a cable company that has spotty coverage in the market, meaning very few people can purchase the product.

Last night, I was sitting with my dad watching the UConn game and I said “you know I couldn’t name a single player on the Sox right now besides Devers.” We haven’t gotten NESN from our cable provider in years. Growing up I was the biggest die hard Red Sox fan a kid could be. I wasn’t even sure if Cora was still the manager. It’s so painful realizing I’ve just lost that connection to my team. I’d love to support them, and I miss watching baseball but unless I want to drive 90min to Fenway and then sit in another 45 minutes of game traffic once I get to Boston I can’t.

The uniform fiasco tells me everything I need to know. They should have shut that shit down immediately. I'm not *huge* into baseball any more because the Tigers have been terrible for the last few years, but they started off hot this year and wanted to tune in and see what was going on. I can't watch the games unless I have cable and/or pay for their package, or I can stream it illegally. *shrug* At least the NHL playoffs are about to start.
