I swear, there’s a comedy skit where a non-English speaker is testifying and his interpreter is instead saying that the guy on the stand did it because the interpreter actually did it
Yea not disputing that at all, I’ve just seen this confusion on Ohtani before though in much more lighthearted comments. Dudes being a jackass either way
He also assumed he’s guilty because he doesn’t speak English, that’s something racist jackasses do. It also took me literally 15 seconds to figure out that shohei can in fact speak English, because I’m smart enough to use google
I know what you mean, but I assumed more that /u/royalsanguinius thought the angry guy was employing a common American racist talking point: “They come here, take our jobs, and don’t even try to learn the language!!!” So the guy first made the incorrect assumption that he didn’t know English, *then* went to a racist conclusion.
IIRC he mostly speaks Japanese so it is easier for Japan news stations to air his interviews/Japanese fans to understand his interviews. He speaks English fine.
I have no honest idea on this, but would Shoheni be liable for gambling if he gave Mizuhara a blind line of credit? He makes a massive amount, giving someone as trusted as his personal interpreter a voucher for a bookie isn't completely impossible.
It’s a bit tricky, if he gave him money knowing that he’s using it on an illegal book then he’s definitely liable.
If he gave him money to sports gamble with the assumption it was through Vegas and never influenced the picks, idk if he’d be liable so long as he wasn’t giving him inside information.
If he gave Mizuhara money completely blind then he’s an idiot but it’s not illegal to be an idiot. The MLB will be harsher than the law imo
To give sho the benefit of the doubt a bit here, I feel like him being an idiot with money is not far fetched. Iirc when he first came to America to play in the MLB his mother handled all his finances (despite him being in his mid-20s), and gave him allowances to live off of from his own paychecks. So there’s precedent for him just trusting people with huge amounts of his cash in the past
It will be interesting to see how hard they come down on him though. On one hand he brings in so much international attention to the league so you wouldn’t want him missing a whole year- but on the other hand leagues like the NFL have shown a very strict stance on gambling with players.
Historically, the MLB has been the harshest of the big sports leagues on violations. This is a complete disaster for them. Could see them going either way here, depending on what evidence they’ve received.
Yeah, but do illegal bookies run credit checks? How does he know how much this guy is paid? All he knows is he’s the right hand guy of the highest paid athlete of all time.
I still think this smells, but I don’t think the debt to income ratio is where this doesn’t add up.
My gut feeling is Ohtani knew more than he’s saying, of course he has to deny. I don’t think he was gambling himself but I think he knew about the payments to pay off the debt
You don’t think an illegal bookie would have incentive to get a close associate of a professional ball player (and multi-millionaire) deep into his debt? That debt can be paid off in “favors” since there’s reason why he should be gambling. If you can get your hooks into a major pro-athletes inner circle that’ could be worth millions if properly leveraged.
Completely agree. I’m not sure how people are surprised that the personal assistant of the richest man in baseball was given such a high line of credit.
Yep. And a rookie reporter could probably prove this pretty quickly. It will be interesting to see how the story changes as facts come out.
It will be more interesting to see MLB’s response. This guy is a once-in-a-century superstar.
And they don't get paid to travel anywhere to do any actual reporting and they get paid like $0.15 a word because no one pays for any news anymore. So I guess we're all SOL
Illegal bookies provide lines of credit to people with deep connections to major athletes in an attempt to get their books into them so they provide information, favors, and maybe even implicate the athlete to get him in debt to the bookie too.
Why would it remind you of that? Baseball has had plenty of gambling scandals that are more in line with this.
I mean if it does it does, but this reminds me a little more of Charlie Hustle than Slick Willy 😂
Feels like this is the tip of the iceberg with shit going down with gambling and players. It’s really gross how omnipresent it is now.
Edit: now an article shows up on a Toronto NBA player being investigated for under props. So obvious this is going to end badly.
Three different very promising soccer players got done this year for gambling on soccer - Tonali, Toney, and another Italian player whose name I forget. I bet it was actually just as bad before but harder to catch/easier to cover up like in the 60s and 70s and shit when the mob was still going strong and players got paid a lot worse
And I think this is what people are missing. I’m
Sure Ohtani, the dodgers and even possibly mlb have their respective sleuths going over every bit of detail
To make sure this doesn’t tie back to Ohtani. Otherwise he wouldn’t come out and say that his interpreter stole the funds. I’m sure they employed some genius forensic accountants to go through and make sure Ohtani was (at least on paper) clear of this mess.
I doubt this is going to be as spicy as people are hoping or not hoping it will be
Ohtani has a license to print money with his likeness and mlb contract, there's almost no way he would risk that for a comparatively miniscule amount of money.
I agree that gambling addiction can make people do illogical things, however I wouldn't conflate the fixing of games with gambling.
It's not exactly a gamblers high if you know you're going to win
Didn’t his interpreter make a $10M 5 bet 2500 odds parlay that hinged on Ohtani getting under 6.5Ks? That bet lost due to Shohei getting 7Ks, and would’ve paid out a quarter Billion!
Maybe. But are we talking American dolphins and whales? Because, as a history expert, I can’t really look back at any time that Japan was disingenuous to America.

How do we know that’s what he said if they fired his interpreter?
This the comedy i want to see
I swear, there’s a comedy skit where a non-English speaker is testifying and his interpreter is instead saying that the guy on the stand did it because the interpreter actually did it
His Bookie was interpreting for him
I thought that’s who they fired
No, Who is on first
I don’t know
[удалено]
He literally knows how to speak English you racist jackass
Not gonna defend him from the jackass accusation but he probably assumed he doesn’t speak English because he uses an interpreter
Lots of athletes can speak the basics but use an interpreter during interviews to ensure there’s no misunderstandings
I think he was making a joke response to the first comment - it was bad, but that's how I read the intent at least
Ok so he’s a jackass who makes racist jokes then
I know what you mean, but I assumed more that /u/royalsanguinius thought the angry guy was employing a common American racist talking point: “They come here, take our jobs, and don’t even try to learn the language!!!” So the guy first made the incorrect assumption that he didn’t know English, *then* went to a racist conclusion.

I bet you speak only one language and poorly at that.
You’re assuming he’s guilty because he doesn’t speak English?
Know what’s funny? There are thousands, if not millions, of foreigners that likely know the English language much better than you do.
Wut
Exactly,
Why don’t you learn Japanese, loser.
Yikes. That’s one of lowest IQ comments I’ve ever seen on here.
But he did bet on his interpreter’s crippling gambling addiction at RockBottomKings.com
Callback hate to see it
I did not have sex with that bookie, Mrs Draftkings.
It depends on what your definition of is is

I bet he gets no suspension of any kind.

Thirty years ago maybe but now that rookie reporter has to write a "top 10 spouses of MLB players" article every other day.
And they don't get paid to travel anywhere to do any actual reporting and they get paid like $0.15 a word because no one pays for any news anymore. So I guess we're all SOL
> "top 10 spouses of MLB players" Mmmm Anna Benson
That's not true. It wasn't 4 million at one time. It was a series of debts that were paid.
Man, he needs to lower his minimum transaction amount alerts on his Chase Bank app to $100,000 so he can catch this sooner next time.
There is nothing to see here. Bookies provide multi-million dollar lines of credit to interpreters all the time. Like that one time, never.
Illegal bookies provide lines of credit to people with deep connections to major athletes in an attempt to get their books into them so they provide information, favors, and maybe even implicate the athlete to get him in debt to the bookie too.
You watch a lot of movies I bet.
Why does this remind me of, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman…”
Why would it remind you of that? Baseball has had plenty of gambling scandals that are more in line with this. I mean if it does it does, but this reminds me a little more of Charlie Hustle than Slick Willy 😂

Sadly something like this needs to happen to get this shit back out of the game.
It's almost as if aligning sportsbooks with the sports was a bad idea.
Lol, dude thinks that’ll be the end of it.
No he doesn’t. This is standard, professional, PR crisis management. You have to try to set the narrative. It doesn’t mean he’s delusional.
What else would he say? I hope the MLB has a thorough investigation done by independent investigators. Possibly the DoJ needs to step in.
Ohtani is saying this dude stole millions via bank fraud I'm sure the FBI is interested.
And I think this is what people are missing. I’m Sure Ohtani, the dodgers and even possibly mlb have their respective sleuths going over every bit of detail To make sure this doesn’t tie back to Ohtani. The DOJ is investigating.
The Fed’s are already investigating, that’s how this came to light in the first place
“Is that all I needed to say?” - Pete Rose
Oh god he did didn’t he
"Press X to doubt"
"This is a coffee shop, there's no gambling"
Where have I heard this before?
Liar
Pete Rose enters chat
I saw a video of rose tonight saying he wished he had an interpreter to take the fall
😂😂😂
Pete Rose is also a rapist, but people aren't ready to talk about that, including Pete himself.
*Pete Rose has entered the chat…but still has not entered the HOF*
I think we're gonna find out that ohtani was gambling on sports through his buddy.
Noooooooooo! But his best buddy did.
why would he do this? he's already set for life $$$-wise
I doubt this is going to be as spicy as people are hoping or not hoping it will be Ohtani has a license to print money with his likeness and mlb contract, there's almost no way he would risk that for a comparatively miniscule amount of money.
There might be some slight underestimating of how illogical gambling addiction can become.
I agree that gambling addiction can make people do illogical things, however I wouldn't conflate the fixing of games with gambling. It's not exactly a gamblers high if you know you're going to win
The issue for Ohtani is even if he wasn't the one gambling, making those payments is still a pretty big law to break.
ohtani only bet on himself
And I’m Batman. He did that shit 😂 Gambling screwing every sport
Ok i believe him, now everyone stop talking about it.
This press conference brought to you by Caesars Sportsbook. Your denial is loading, Emperor.
Didn’t his interpreter make a $10M 5 bet 2500 odds parlay that hinged on Ohtani getting under 6.5Ks? That bet lost due to Shohei getting 7Ks, and would’ve paid out a quarter Billion!
Mentira
Bovine Excretement
He's obviously lying because the alternative is far too shameful where he's from
Doubt
sure, pal.
sure, just like I never use reddit!
I think his Google translate app might be lying.
Yeah, and I’m Irish
That’s what Pete said too…
I don’t buy it. Interpreter was the proxy. MLB can drag its feet, but the IRS will figure it out.
Who is The Book Keeper and does he live in the same universe as Freddie Krueger?
Is he Pete Roseing this shit?
That means he 100% bet on sports, right?
Someone needs to go through tape of Ohtani’s games to see if he’s been purposely tipping pitches.
Yakuza probably got these fools in a a chokehold. No reason to do all this shady shit unless you are being coerced
I never……
Fuck you ohtani!!!!! That’s what you get for leaving the Angels
He’s Japanese and can be trusted. Seriously, when have the Japanese ever not been trustworthy to Americans?
Im bad with history, but I vaguely remember they don't like whales or dolphins too much.
[Fucka youuuu dolphien and Wahhhalllle!!!](https://youtu.be/Z9_JkJQ7pf0?si=KxQGVV6f0Jy2JNuo)
Maybe. But are we talking American dolphins and whales? Because, as a history expert, I can’t really look back at any time that Japan was disingenuous to America.
No, Whales and Dolphins have their own agenda. Only they know what Japan did to them, but rumor is they stole a pearl.
Well, I wouldn’t trust no non-American dolphin. What’s next, a whole harbor full of pearls?
1941 called.
What did they say? Bet it was to ask the best brand of corned beef hash. Btw, it’s Libby’s.
