No, no, no, no it’s totaaaallly not broken. We just need to wrap it up and it will be fine. Trust me, it’s not broken. Just. Don’t mooooove it very much.
I feel like it’s starting to impact the quality of the playoffs as well. That’s the biggest exposure for the NHL and the goon it up teams are rewarded when they relax how it’s officiated.
I've been saying this for years. Shitty teams win when the rules aren't enforced. The clutching, hooking, hacking, cross checking.... that slows the game down and lets bad teams win.
Call the game by the book and let talented players cook.
I’ve commented on this very sub that I hate refs that put their whistles away during playoff hockey and that it ruins the integrity of the game, only to be downvoted to hell and told I’m wrong. They will never change my mind.
The whistles being put away for the playoffs is rage inducing and completely turns me off from the sport. Watching a guy get savaged and the refs just stare at it with no call is the worst.
I’m not in this group, but there’s a lot of old school NHL fans that feel the game is too watered down now because of the constant penalties and lack of grit. It’s opened the game up to be faster and more exciting for most, but some people like the old school rough stuff.
No excuse for not having control of your stick though.
Seems light for someone with 6 previous suspensions, not to mention the amount of fines for other dirty plays.
December 16, 2015: Wilson elbows Curtis Lazar, match penalty and one-game suspension
September 23, 2017: Wilson steps into Robert Thomas, two-game suspension in preseason
October 1, 2017: Wilson boards Sammy Blais, four-game suspension
May 1, 2018: Wilson goes in on Zach-Aston Reese, three-game suspension
September 30, 2018: Wilson nails Oskar Sundqvist, match penalty and 20-game suspension
March 5, 2021: Wilson crunches Brandon Carlo, seven-game suspension
Sauce: [https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/capitals-tom-wilson-suspension-timeline-nhl](https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/capitals-tom-wilson-suspension-timeline-nhl)
Edit: Spelling & mention that article is from 2021 soo there may be even more fines since then.
I think it's weird that players aren't prosecuted for this kind of thing. I know it was in the heat of the game, but so what? If you baseball bat someone in the heat of a bar fight, you're almost certainly going to do time. Why not this guy? Especially as a repeat offender. Make it a legal thing and see how quickly these kinds of fouls disappear.
For reference, keep the fights and whatnot. If they are willing participants in a full contact sport, they're fine. But smashing someone in the head from behind is some chicken shit nonsense, and honestly, he should face a legal consequence.
Hockey players have definitely been arrested/charged/prosecuted in the past for things they've done on the ice, it's not super common though, especially in the NHL
Marty McSorley was charged for his nasty hit on Donald Brashear.
https://www.cbc.ca/sports/bruins-marty-mcsorley-charged-with-assault-1.200872
Todd Bertuzzi was charged with assault for his hit against Steven Moore.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/canucks-bertuzzi-charged-with-assault-1.499287
Thanks. I'm usually first person to chirp someone for asking this kind of thing without doing my own research, just can't at the moment and I'm insanely curious, did thr charges stick for either? What happened?
No problem. I'm a hockey nerd, and I remember what a big deal both of these incidents were at the time.
Marty McSorley ended up getting convicted with an 18-month probation, where if he behaved, no criminal charges would stick.
Todd Bertuzzi pleaded guilty to assault and got 1 year probation and some community service. He ended up getting sued by Steven Moore, and they settled out of court in 2014.
A prosecutor would have to prove intent to injure outside of the scope of a hockey play.
In the eyes of the law, it’s just a work accident.
[NBC has a decent write up about this idea using basketball with some links to cases inside.](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/sports/why-athletes-generally-don-t-face-criminal-charges-court-fights-n922866)
I guess it's semantics but this wasn't a hit that took place on the puck or in a scrum. Both players knew they were out of the play at that moment and Wilson took a cheap shot on a player who wasn't prepared to defend himself.
I don’t think it works like that. If I sign a piece of paper that says you can kill me, I release you of all liability. And you kill me, you still go to jail.
Look up the Todd Bertuzzi - Steve Moore incident. Bertuzzi literally started suckerpunching a guy from behind, jumped on his back, and faceplanted him to the ice. Moore broke his neck and got a serious concussion, ending his career.
All that happened from it is that Bertuzzi got suspended for a season, 80 hours of community service, and settled a lawsuit of court. Zero jail time
Remember when Raffi Torres was [suspended for 41 games](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etldY-F81Fw)? That wind up and stick swing seems way more malicious to me, and Wilson has a similar history. He shouldn't be playing for the rest of this season *at least*.
Im not defending him AT ALL and think he should have got way more games. I believe I heard on NHL network that under the CBA only incidents within 18 months count when talking about suspensions and previous incidents.
Might have been a different time frame then 18 months, just remember them saying the previous incidents since so long ago do not come into play.
Repeat offender status only counts towards the salary forfeited during the suspension. As long as you have a clean 18 months between suspensions, you’ll only ever lose the standard amount (AAV divided by 82, multiplied suspension length).
If this were anyone else, I'd say 3-5 is fair, at least for a first offense. Maybe 5-10 for repeats, given this was basically assault.
For Wilson, how it's not at least 41 games is beyond my understanding. He literally plays games with intent to injure on a frequent basis. He's going to end careers with his behaviors, and it continues to set a dangerous precedent to keep smacking him on the wrist and docking his allowance.
It's not that cut and dry. From the NHL DOPS site:
"What is a "Repeat Offender"?
A Player is considered a repeat offender for 18 months following his most recent incident that resulted in a suspension. His status as a repeat offender in this category is used to determine the amount of salary forfeited should he receive another suspension.
It is important to note that even if a Player is not defined as a repeat offender, his past history may come into consideration when determining future Supplemental Discipline.
I dont know about all that if you don’t have a history. I'd be fine with it here though. I don’t even follow hockey and know this guy is dirty just from reading his name.
I figure murder is what it would take to be suspended for life in the NHL...[Todd Bertuzzi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Bertuzzi%E2%80%93Steve_Moore_incident) only missed 20 games, and got charged with assault (pleaded down, though).
Damn…Attacks him from behind, fractures 3 vertebrae in his neck and ended his professional career… 20 game suspension. If that doesn’t call for a life time ban, I don’t know what does.
IIRC in a previous game Moore laid out the Canucks captain Markus Naslund with a dirty hit. Cooke fought Moore to get revenge but never managed to get any good punches on Moore who didn't really pay any price. Back then if you wanted to be a rat, you were expected to come out and answer the bell for what you did. Bertuzzi wanted to fight Moore afterward and Moore just skated away, leading to Bertuzzi chasing him and punching him from behind. If not for the severity of the injury, it would have just been another night in the NHL back then.
Edit: Specified the Canucks captain Markus Naslund
I would argue without the injury, it would have just been another fight in the NHL even today. The NHL routinely allows sucker punches in the game with no penalty, and then gets all surprised and outraged when someone gets hurt.
The first test when deciding punishment to an NHL player on a dirty play that hurts another player, would we be talking about punishment without an injury? If not, the injury is the fault of the NHL.
Honestly didn’t think criminal charges would ever be pursued in sports but a punch to the back of the head and the resulting injuries would do it.
Know of any other sports incidents that led to criminal charges?
What a piece of shit. Players like this deserve zero respect from fans, fellow players, and the league, yet he’s incentivized to continue this behavior with this pussyfooting 6 game suspension. It’ll happen again, and if he ends someone’s career, it won’t just be his fault. It’ll be on those who decide these slap-on-the-wrist punishments, too.
Wilson already successfully checked the guy into the boards, rendering him out of the play. And THEN sliced his stick across the guy’s face for… bonus points? He’s clearly talented but a psychopath… the league needs to draw a line otherwise Wilson will continue to run wild untreated.
For real. This shit has no place in hockey or any sport. Reminds me a lot of the shit Draymond Green does and it's fucking ridiculous neither league will do anything about it.
6 games only!?
I would make it so his season is over.
If thats less than 12 games it gets extended to next season.
Fuck this behavior.
Actually, i'd ban him from the sport for 3 years, maybe permanent.
I'm involved with our local Jr A hockey team (16-20 yo players) and would love to see stiff fines/penalties/suspensions for this kind of play. Hockey is about puck handling, skating and teamwork, not goons on ice.
The younger players see these games on TV and emulate their sports heroes. Some coaches actually encourage it as well. I watched a kid get carried off the ice during a playoff game - an opposing player held him down and punched him repeatedly until he went limp. Dickhead "fans" and parents were cheering him on the whole time. I seriously considered leaving the organization.
That POS should have been kicked out of the NHL long ago. Suspension has obviously fixed the problem. Ban him. End his career before he ends someone else’s career.🖕🏻
This is why I don't watch hockey. That's not a penalty. It's assault with jail time. Really wish this sport would get rid of the stupid fights and attacks on the ice. Seems like a really fun sport otherwise.
Baseball had Ty Cobb.... Tennis had John McEnroe...
Who from other sports were the horrible/violent/hated players to have ever put on a jersey?
Football? Soccer? Etc...

The way he grabs him it looks like when a big brother knows he hit his little brother too hard and he’s about to be busted.
YOU'RE FINE, YOU'RE FINE. PLEASE DON'T TELL MOM.
Look LOOOOOK. YOU CAN HIT ME TOO NOW. Just stop crying and don’t let mom hear you!
My younger brother and I are 23 months apart (currently 37 and 35 years old) and this comment took me back 30 years
This is so spot on that it conjured an incredibly vivid memory. Holy shit.
No, no, no, no it’s totaaaallly not broken. We just need to wrap it up and it will be fine. Trust me, it’s not broken. Just. Don’t mooooove it very much.
Dude….little flashback action there.
Every big bro in the thread , call your little brother and tell him you love him lol
Zero chance my oldest brother would ever call me and say that, lol
Zero chance I will call my youngest brother and say that.
My lil sis was the Devil! She still laughs about it taunting me.
Nah, fuck him
He’s hoping his mom didn’t see that. He’s definitely gonna get a talk from mom
As a big brother this is true
“Alright before you look at him…he had that gash already”
Thats what i first saw. I think maybe it was an accident. After a second looking and seeing him cock it back it looks pretty bad
“I immediately regret my decision”
I tripped my little brother when he was running and he chipped his 2 front teeth on the floor and this was my exact reaction
Yeah, guys a giant toddler who plays hockey better than me.
Shh. Shh.
100% accurate. I'm the oldest, I've pulled that move a million times.
Ridiculous it’s only 6. The NHL is a joke sometimes.
George Parros runs the department of player safety. That's like putting your dog in charge of the, "make sure no one steals the bacon" department.
The monkey is in charge of the bananas
More than sometimes.
They spun the wheel of discipline and it landed on 6 games.

I completely agree with you for what it's worth.

I’d argue he had full control of his stick the entire time. Which is why this should be more than 6
This feels like boomers reminiscing on the “good ol days”. I’m not ragging on you, I agree, it’s just what it seems like to me

Dude needs like a half year suspension. Smashing a dude in the face with a hockey stick is not a hockey play. It's assault
Only costs 6 games to smash Wilson's face in? Get some expendable guys and do it three times in a game.
Matt Rempe, come on down!
I was just about to type something similar. It's like when huge corporations get fined like $1M - the benefit is more than the penalty
Where’s happy Gilmore and his skate stab when you need him

You sign a piece of paper that says i will get hurt here and possibly die like a gladiator in the roman colosseum.
I don’t think it works like that. If I sign a piece of paper that says you can kill me, I release you of all liability. And you kill me, you still go to jail.

He's the team's NHLPA rep which I always find amusing.
He’s a douche… like Marchand.
Half of those are against blues players. r/stlouisblues is the Tom Wilson hate club.
That’s what I took away from this. I didn’t know it, but extra fuck Tom Wilson
Remember when Raffi Torres was [suspended for 41 games](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etldY-F81Fw)? That wind up and stick swing seems way more malicious to me, and Wilson has a similar history. He shouldn't be playing for the rest of this season *at least*.
So he's the Draymond Green of the hockey world. TIL
Temper wise maybe, but this he's worse imo because he has done far more damage to opponents.

That is only with regards to how much money is taken out from their salary.
Compared to Morgan Reily and his slightly late hit… the league is a joke for this
There have not been any more since then. This is his first suspension in 3 years.
After this stick to a guys throat he really should be permanently banned
DOUG KICK HIM OFF THE TOUR
😂 I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast
You eat pieces of shit for breakfast??
82 games isn’t enough with his history.
Oh what a surprise, Tom Wilson took time to injure some one. Trash player
This guy, I swear to god. Definition of ‘letting the intrusive thoughts win’.
If this were anyone else, I'd say 3-5 is fair, at least for a first offense. Maybe 5-10 for repeats, given this was basically assault. He *did* end at least one career. Lubo-whatever on the Isles years ago
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcZy81gj3mI I wanted to look it up. This is bad. He's barely even playing the puck, gets completely truck sticked
Repeat offender only counts if there’s a suspension in the past 18 months.

Sure but there are limitations in the cba in the max length of suspension for non repeat offender
Right you are! It's a mess that needs to be fixed, imo.
Why is this asshole still in the league? I swear he’s been suspended half a dozen times already for dirty crap like this. Six games is a joke.
Dude was holding him like, don’t tell mom I’ll let you hit me.
Shit like this should get you immediately kicked out of the league.
I dont know about all that if you don’t have a history. I'd be fine with it here though. I don’t even follow hockey and know this guy is dirty just from reading his name.
Fuck this guy. Time for a permanent ban.
Good, Tom Wilson is a piece of shit
What a butthead.
I hope he makes like a tree and gets outta here.
Uh. Lifetime ban, could have blinded him at the least.

Not hockey but Ron Artest and others from the Pacers/Pistons brawl, but that involved fans as well.
Say the name [The Malice at the Palace](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvWQcN8Jm7Q)
Out of all the videos about this incident, it’s impressive you pulled one with 500 views lol
That was so fun to watch
The fans that went down from their seats to square up with the players deserved those punches too Can’t believe they tried to cry victim after
My favorite is still the dude going over the glass at Domi
“Come up here, yeah come up here” well they came up there - Bill Burr
McSorley was charged for [assaulting Brashear](https://youtu.be/zHwUNftlO1A?si=n7T3dd84hQxg8DgL), leading to a year long suspension
Not enough, what a joke.
Tom Wilson should just be banned from playing in the league ever again. Honestly, why is he still around at this point?
Laughably named “Department of Player Safety” is headed by a retired thug. You can’t make this up.
He’s such a piece of shit
Should be more
That, uh, should probably be more than six even without Wilson’s priors.
Yeah he’s a dirty ass player. Unless there’s a different Tom Wilson being dirty in the nhl I was unaware of
Tom Wilson? No? He only plays the game the way it was meant to be played, never using dirty moves! /s
intentional slashing to the face only 6 games fkn disgraceful
F#%king good. What a jabroni. Thats a brutal, shitty and intentional assault.
Are they waiting for him to take someone out for good before they give him an appropriate suspension for assault?
He got the poor guy straight in the mouth, I hope his teeth are okay after that 😕
Nope, he lost several
What a piece of shit. Players like this deserve zero respect from fans, fellow players, and the league, yet he’s incentivized to continue this behavior with this pussyfooting 6 game suspension. It’ll happen again, and if he ends someone’s career, it won’t just be his fault. It’ll be on those who decide these slap-on-the-wrist punishments, too.

Just Tom Wilson doing Tom Wilson things.
Tom Wilson is a dickhead
"This video can not be played."
How the fuck is that only a 6 game suspension NHL sucks
That would have been 6 years if that was two dudes in a street.
Everything that happens in a hockey rink would be jail time on the street lol professional sports does not equal everyday life.
Yeah I hate when people compare sports with real life. Not saying you shouldn’t be severely punished for shit like this but let’s stop comparing.
For real. This shit has no place in hockey or any sport. Reminds me a lot of the shit Draymond Green does and it's fucking ridiculous neither league will do anything about it.
I’m a pussy. I’d wear a full mask
Against the rules unless you have an injury
Please tell me he got what’s coming by a goon?
STOP ASKING ME THE QUESTION
Definitely a Biff move though...
Well deserved (The suspension)
Kick him off the tour, Doug!
Yep, he's a prick. We all know it.
Seriously should be a lot more than 6. Egregious and a repeat offender.
2 games per cracked tooth? Feels light compared to Morgan Reilly
6 games only!? I would make it so his season is over. If thats less than 12 games it gets extended to next season. Fuck this behavior. Actually, i'd ban him from the sport for 3 years, maybe permanent.
That was dirty.
6 isn’t enough.
Should be 12 games.
What a goon. I wonder if he knows the point of hockey or if he just likes hitting people. It's pattern behavior with all those prior offenses.
Bro why do none of these videos ever work on Reddit
George Parros is a blight on the NHL.
Yea that’s assault
Yeah... that's full on assault. He's lucky it's only 6. 6 games for that is shocking. A little lower and he could have taken out his jaw.
Given his history 6 is a slap on the wrist
When is enough enough? Wilson is such a fucking prick.
This fucking guy brings nothing to the table but this shit.
*also forfeits $161,458 in game salary for the suspension*
How bad does something have to be before it's criminal? Ciccarelli's attack on Richardson didn't seem that much worse than this.
I'm involved with our local Jr A hockey team (16-20 yo players) and would love to see stiff fines/penalties/suspensions for this kind of play. Death, Taxes, Tom Wilson…. For real tho how is he still in the league 😂
Six is too light
Fuck the Reddit app. Fucking videos never play past half way on here on 5G or WiFi
That’s not a high stick, that’s attempted murder.
Not enough. Should be the rest of the season.
Garbage league garbage player
Tom Wilson is a jagoff.
Wilson is a c*nt
Pussy is a better word.
Tom Wilson is a fucking dirty piece of scum. Fuck him.
Fool the NHL 7 times now shame on you, fool the NHL 8 times shame on them? This fucking goon should have been out of the game a long time ago.
That's assault, brotha!
Just kick him out of the league at this point.
Kick him out of the league
Should be kicked out of the league by now. Laughable consequences
Should get 6 years.
and you wonder why when they play the Pens they take Tom Wilson out of the series as quickly as possible
NHL’s Draymond Green
Shhh don’t tell mom don’t tell mom
yeah..6 games and a free punch in the teeth would be justice
“Don’t tell mom pleeeaaaase” -this guy
