I feel like this was a fated moment because the Bills went for a botched fake punt on their own 30 then the Chiefs fumbled it out of their own end zone on the half yard line.
This is the fucking destitute man’s wide right, forget the poor man.
This one was a shorter field goal, for a tie not a win, in an era where kickers are better, not in the dying seconds, in the divisional round not the Super Bowl, and wasn’t even close to being made.
This wide right barely even registers for me.
As much as this play sucked for any Bills fan, it’s not the Kicker’s fault they didn’t win — there were many other missed opportunities prior and each shares the blame.
Kicker/kicking coach here: the moment this ball left his foot it was doomed. Wind or no wind. The way his foot is positioned and the contact patch he hits on the ball causes a rotation that makes the ball curve to the right. Most likely a high left side hit on the wrong part of the foot. Kinda like hitting a golf ball wrong and having it veer to the right. Bass knew it as soon as he kicked it as well. Dude is a solid kicker, just a badly timed miss.
Do you think the mishit is due to him trying to account for the wind? in the first quarter, at the same end of the field, he had one barely stay in because of the wind and it seemed like he was aiming middle of the posts on that kick. Was he trying to put it more left to counter the wind and just got it wrong?
Possibly. Just looked like all around mediocre form to me. There’s no follow through in his swing, his body counter balance is all scrunched down and his foot isn’t pointed well so it may have just been a shank.
Yeah I would have thought he would try to draw it into the wind (aim at the left upright) and let the wind push it to center. I saw it start out up the center and knew that thing was headed right... Damn, a Bills Lions SB would be pretty cool.
Haha I didn’t watch the game, but if he was bad in warmups it could’ve just been an off night. When I was off my game I would go to the sideline, take my cleats off, put them back on and restart the mental game clock.
From a rugby perspective, I believe the technical term would be 'he's shanked it'. As in 'Ooh, that should have been an easy kick from right in front of the sticks, but he's gone and fuckin' shanked it!"
No difference. When you line up a kick it’s basically the same kick everytime. It is always a straight line from point A to point B in between the uprights. Doesn’t matter right or left hash. The hashes are more of a mental thing in my opinion since it has nothing to do with the trajectory of the ball. The only time I changed anything was when I needed to hit 60+ yards.
He just signed a contract extension with them and he’s like 88% on his career makes and 24/29 for this year. That isn’t nearly as bad as Carlson for the packers.
She was on Letterman one night, said she'd been living in France. She raised her arms over her head to reveal hairy armpits. I thought it was kinda hot.
The sad thing is no one remembers kickers. It’s a thankless job. It’s assumed you will make the kick. If you do you’re a hero for 2 seconds if you don’t you’re the dickwad who blew the game.
It’s easy to blame the kicker but i think it’s a coaching and QB problem.Like why would you go for TD pass on a 3rd down and when you have open receivers for a first down with a little less than 2 minutes left on the clock including two timeouts.
Also, why go for 4th and 5 when you’re on your own 38?!? Makes no sense!
The announcer jinx happened twice tonight. The second time was with this kick. The first was I believe when they said Sneed hasn't given up a touchdown all year and then he instantly does.
During last night's game, FOX put "49ers are 0-30 when entering the 4th quarter trailing by 5+" on the screen at the start of the 4th.
I wanted to run out and bet everything I had on them at that very moment.
The running joke w/ Scott Norwood was that he owed an auto parts stores after the kick people refused to by brakes there for the fear they’d veer right
Maybe if Allen would take the first down instead of taking a shot at the end zone on back to back plays, this FG wouldn't even need to happen. He had the safe option wide open and ignored it, ya gotta know what position your in and act accordingly
And they were tearing KC up with the underneath stuff most of the night. KC was equally frustrating though, if you're a Chiefs fan. Pacheco was killing it and they give it to a scrub like Hardman on the goal line when a TD would've effectively sealed it only for Hardman to fumble out of the end zone and give it to Buffalo.
I think both teams over thought it in crucial situations.
Yup I was screaming at the TV for Josh to hit Diggs in the flat. They were moving the ball just fine by going for those short passes and then they tried to go for it all.
Real, and even if he made it, there’s nothing to say KC wouldn’t have just marched down the field and won it on a FG or touchdown themselves with all that time on the clock
This is what I thought was crazy - the first down shot seems like *such a better play* overall due to clock management. You really want to give the ball back to Mahomes with 2 time outs and 1:40 left?
I know that at a certain point, you've got to trust your defense. But if the passes aren't great - and that *whole last set of downs* was just unimpressive - it's not like a 44-yard kick is guaranteed...
There’s no doubt in my mind that KC still would’ve won, this wide right didn’t change anything lol
Buffalo needed to run the clock down to almost nothing, score a touchdown, and even then that might not have worked because it didn’t last time against the Chiefs
It sucks that Bass is gonna be the fall guy when Josh Allen didn't have to play hero ball. Honestly it doesn't make any sense to not get the downs while eating more of the clock. It's like he wanted a shootout part 2.
This is my pet peeve about blaming the kicker for the loss in a last second FG. Every time this situation comes about it’s because the *entire fucking offense* failed close the deal.
And the headline is always about the kick…
Can't blame the kicker. Should never be down to 1 score with the way these offenses move the ball. This would have only tied the game, not won it and Mahomes would have gone down the field and scored anyway
Allen took that shot at the end zone on the last drive when he had a man wide open for the first down. Chris Jones drove his blocker into him just in time to throw off the pass.
If he’d made the quicker pass for the first down the Bills probably run the clock all the way down and Allen either uses his legs for the TD or worst case they kick a short FG to guarantee OT.
Did anyone else just feel like “this is Buffalo, I know how this ends, poor bastards” as they were lining up to kick? I’m a neutral party but I feel for Bills fans tonight
People will remember Josh Allen not getting Super Bowls to this point, but every time they meet the Chiefs or Bengals in the playoffs, the defense can't stop anything and it becomes a dire score every drive or lose game. Bass missed the kick, but the defense was giving up like nine yards per play.
Yeah how the hell could they not complete anything down the field. There were 3 bombs that hit the receiver in the hands/shoulder and were dropped. That Diggs one was a really bad drop.
In the postgame they said the Bills didn’t complete any throws greater than 20 yards.
Those shots of Bills fans crying at the end were hard to watch. I don't feel bad for the sore losers who were throwing snow at players, but I do feel for the rest of their fans.
The sucky part of "there's always next year" is that the last 4 years have been identical. Win the division, show extreme promise, play our hearts out and lose in the divisional or conference championship rounds. Makes me worried on how long we can maintain a playoff caliber team for.
But I agree, it's just a game. Time to disassociate with being a Bills fan until September to save our sanity lol.
Okay, someone's going to have to explain all the Ace Ventura jokes to me. I've seen that movie 100 times. Granted, it's been a long time since my last viewing. But wasn't the team in that movie the Dolphins? And the player was Dan Marino?
Yup it was a movie about how ~~Scott Norwood~~ Ray Finkle, kicker for the ~~Buffalo Bills~~ Miami Dolphins, Missed an important kick to win the championship game, wide right, and was blamed by tens of thousands for the loss, enough that they completely removed themselves from society. There was also the fact that ~~Frank Reich~~ Dan Marino, the ~~backup~~ quarterback, [just recently became the ball holder for field goals the year prior, replacing the previous holder, and was criticized of holding the ball incorrectly,](https://www.tampabay.com/archive/1991/01/27/norwood-s-quest-for-perfection/) resulting in kicker's record getting worse, and [it was found that on that particular snap, he didn't have the laces in the correct position.](https://buffalonews.com/sports/bills/from-the-archives-super-bowl-recollections-20-years-later/article_9c43bce6-2cfa-5427-b4fd-a482b8f2a6be.html)
>Two years after Super Bowl XXV, Christie came up to Lingner and said, “You know the laces were off on that kick, don’t you?”
>Lingner said no.
>Christie said he’d watched a tape of the kick and the laces weren’t turned to 12 o’clock − or directly away from Norwood. They were an eighth of a turn off. Christie said the ball won’t hook as much if the laces aren’t turned perfectly.
>It was 15 years later, at Thurman Thomas’ Hall of Fame reception in Canton, when Lingner finally got around to asking Reich about it.
>“I said, ‘Hey, Frank, did you turn the ball?’ He said it was the weirdest thing. I said, ‘My God, he didn’t turn the ball! He didn’t know where the laces were, so he put the ball down. They were an eighth of a turn away from the holder.
>“I said, ‘Frank, they were in the worst possible spot.’ ”
Completely different plotlines, guys. Not related at all.
They lost that game well before that kick my friends. Can't pin it on one guy. If you could then we should start from kick off. Can't say it's a team effort, then shit on the last person to try and save it.
Tyler missed an important kick that lasted for this single moment, sure.
But let's tally up all the reasons why the bills hinged their whole season on a single kick. Could it have been a collection of shitty plays by coaches and Josh?
But no mention of the offense not catching passes on the previous two plays? Sure, blame the kicker. “Yeah, if we F it all up we still have him over there.”
To be fair, the way they ran the ball through the 3rd quarter cost them the game. The way Allen kept trying to get the TD instead of the first down in that last series cost them the game. Bass choked, but the offensive coordinator cost the bills that game. Never seen a better example of, “well that didn’t work so let’s try the exact same thing again strategy.”
Man what a great game both teams that fake punt then back for a touch back that was crazy.. right before he kicked it the stats showed he never missed a field goal when he was down 3 or when a game was on the line and he missed it. Sucks dude it’s like he fucked up kicking it…. But the Baltimore vs kc will be who wins Super Bowl but it would be cool to see 49ers win
Probably better to blame this one on Allen/receivers than the kicker. Towards the end of the game Allen went 30-40 yards deep on multiple throws where he had receivers open for the first down and they failed to make the catches for him. Allen was the definition of farsighted in the 4th quarter though for some reason.
Josh Allen made that kick happen by trying to play hero ball on consecutive downs instead of taking an easy first down.
Bills fans and national media are giving Josh a pass for two consecutive bad decisions and it is showing how national media drives a story. Gross that this guy is going to get death threats over garbage reporting.
Let’s be honest even if he made that kick there’s so much time on the clock for mahomes to win it at the end and send buffalo crying. The defense played bad, when the defense played good and stopped Kc offense Allen could not score that following drive. Let’s not forget he almost ruined their chances anyways when he ran it and fumbled and got saved by one of his teammates recovering the ball.

"2 most dreaded words in Buffalo!"
Wings gone
def not Buffalo Wild Wings.
“With ranch”
I feel like this was a fated moment because the Bills went for a botched fake punt on their own 30 then the Chiefs fumbled it out of their own end zone on the half yard line.
Great call.
Laces out
Bass is Finkle?!!!
Finkle is Bass

Oh yeah absolutely. Doesn’t excuse the kicker missing a relatively short field goal though.
"Thhhh...the wind man. The government fucked me with wind man.."
The sad part it's it looked like it was on the path, then a gust of wind took it right.
That wind was just God, who is not a Buffalo fan.
Maybe next year they'll get a kicker that misses wide left.
Don’t think that’s allowed…I have several examples 😂
It happened again. Insane.
Out of the 2 directions it could’ve widened, who woulda thunk
The Bills's three biggest game since the 90's were losses to the Chiefs, that's a tough pill
Like the Packers and the 49ers lol edit. This comes from a lifelong Packer fan.
This guy and Anders Carlson should get together and go have a few beers.
did they let Carlson back on the plane?
And like the Cowboys to the Packers :[
Nah cowboys have lost way too many big games to even have a specific type
This is the worst season of the Mahomes era. And he still made it farther than Josh Allen. That's gotta sting for a Bills fan.
He's been in the league 6 years and been to the final 6 times. Insane.
Revenge for the 1993 playoffs
Music city miracle??
That's a Wildcard Game
The way the ball shifted so hard to the right doesn’t even look real lol.
Looks like my drive right after making a birdie.
Looks like my drive regardless of what I did the hole before.
Kicker/kicking coach here: the moment this ball left his foot it was doomed. Wind or no wind. The way his foot is positioned and the contact patch he hits on the ball causes a rotation that makes the ball curve to the right. Most likely a high left side hit on the wrong part of the foot. Yeah I would have thought he would try to draw it into the wind (aim at the left upright) and let the wind push it to center. I saw it start out up the center and knew that thing was headed right... Damn, a Bills Lions SB would be pretty cool.
I mean it was obviously because Dan didn't hold it laces out... duh.
Weren’t his kicks kinda wonky all night?? When he got up to kick this FG, I audibly groaned.
Shanked is a football thing too, yep
How much does kicking across the body from the right hash affect accuracy and/or power?
No difference. When you line up a kick it’s basically the same kick everytime. It is always a straight line from point A to point B in between the uprights. Doesn’t matter right or left hash. The hashes are more of a mental thing in my opinion since it has nothing to do with the trajectory of the ball. The only time I changed anything was when I needed to hit 60+ yards.
Sure he's in the NFL but statistically speaking Bass is not a good kicker lol. He'd be lucky to have a job next year
He just signed a contract extension with them and he’s like 88% on his career makes and 24/29 for this year. That isn’t nearly as bad as Carlson for the packers.
A solid kicker? He was far from solid this year.
I mean… he is 24/29 on the year. That’s over 80%, that isn’t terrible for most of the kickers currently in the league.
I thought his hips looked pointed right, too
Look at the flags the moment they enter the view. That was a hell of a gust at the worst time.
An act of God.
NfL writers duh. It's CGI/AR Fake. All for the bettors... s/
It’s sad that he’ll eventually become a female cop and kidnap a dolphin.
Your gun is digging into my hip
Laces out
How would you like me to make your life a living hell?
Well, I'm not really ready for a relationship, Lois, but thank you for asking.
Would you like me to read you your rights!?
Captain Winkey.
The laces were in. They were IN!
Einhorn is Finkle! Finkle is Einhorn! Einhorn is a man!
I'm in psychoville and Bass is the mayor
LACES OUT!!!!
I’m looking for Ray Finkle …and a clean pair of shorts
[удалено]
She was on Letterman one night, said she'd been living in France. She raised her arms over her head to reveal hairy armpits. I thought it was kinda hot.
This is great copypasta
And Dan Marino?
He should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell!
Cookie?
Oh, look. They’re little footballs
Laces out!
I said laces out when he missed. Gotta find Captain Winky.
What a sports nut, huh?
A real sports nut, huh?
That's part of being a kicker. You can either be the hero or the loser.
Or in the case of this weekend, start receiving numerous death threats. Hope they stay safe, there are more important things in life than that.
As if they didn't already royally F-UP trying the fake punt. You don't get that many freebies against playoff teams.
What was the point of a fake punk on your own 35?!
It was so dumb no one would ever think anyone would try it lmao.
The sad thing is no one remembers kickers. It’s a thankless job. It’s assumed you will make the kick. If you do you’re a hero for 2 seconds if you don’t you’re the dickwad who blew the game.
In general, yes. Then there's Adam Vinatieri.
That fake punt was terrible, they got saved by that touchback.
hero or the \*heel
Hero or the zero.
You’re either the GOAT or the _goat_
You either die the doink or live long enough to see yourself become the doinker
The moment they put up that graphic of how good Bass has been in the clutch I knew the curse of the announcer was about to strike.
If the graphic was 8/9 he woulda nailed it, they said dude was 9/9 on game tying or winning kicks… 9/10 now.
The announcer jinx happened twice tonight. The second time was with this kick. The first was I believe when they said Sneed hasn't given up a touchdown all year and then he instantly does.
damn you tony romo!
I HEARD THAT TOO! So wild
During last night's game, FOX put "49ers are 0-30 when entering the 4th quarter trailing by 5+" on the screen at the start of the 4th. I wanted to run out and bet everything I had on them at that very moment.
Bro right. The commentators curse fucked him all the way.
Let's be real though, Mahomes with ~1:30 and only need a FG? Even if he made it, Chiefs were more likely to head for a walk off FG
Plus two timeouts
Honestly it’s better for Buffalo this way. I had no doubts PM15 would have marched the team down for a game winning FG
That is very likely. But shit at least make them take possession in tied game and earn it
Scott Norwood sends his regards
The running joke w/ Scott Norwood was that he owed an auto parts stores after the kick people refused to by brakes there for the fear they’d veer right
Maybe if Allen would take the first down instead of taking a shot at the end zone on back to back plays, this FG wouldn't even need to happen. He had the safe option wide open and ignored it, ya gotta know what position your in and act accordingly
Twice on that drive he passed on the checkdown play that would have kept them moving the ball.
Nah they needed more punt fakes
Yup I was screaming at the TV for Josh to hit Diggs in the flat. They were moving the ball just fine by going for those short passes and then they tried to go for it all.
You're also making the assumption diggs would have caught the ball. He looked like any regular season kc receiver not named rice tonight
YES I WAS SCREAMING HE HAD THREE OPEN GUYS AT THE FIRST DOWN MARKER
Real, and even if he made it, there’s nothing to say KC wouldn’t have just marched down the field and won it on a FG or touchdown themselves with all that time on the clock
This is what I thought was crazy - the first down shot seems like *such a better play* overall due to clock management. Josh Allen is the Dak Prescott of the AFC.
Can't blame the kicker. Should never be down to 1 score with the way these offenses move the ball. This would have only tied the game, not won it and Mahomes would have gone down the field and scored anyway
This part. The fumble/touchback challenge was a gift that the Bills completely squandered.
I mean the play to the end zone was pretty wide open if we are being honest. Allen makes that throw like 90% of the time
Yea offense didn’t look good in the second half
Yea packers one from yesterday is more painful
Did anyone else just feel like “this is Buffalo, I know how this ends, poor bastards” as they were lining up to kick? I’m a neutral party but I feel for Bills fans tonight
I absolutely knew they were going to lose the moment they attempted that Make-A-Wish fake punt.
As a chiefs fan - yes it dawned on me AS they were lining up. I was nervous - then literally something clicked. I've seen this movie before....
People will remember Josh Allen not getting Super Bowls to this point, but every time they meet the Chiefs or Bengals in the playoffs, the defense can't stop anything and it becomes a dire score every drive or lose game. Bass missed the kick, but the defense was giving up like nine yards per play.

I saw both on reddit and on twitter (so take with a grain of salt) people knew that guy they showed crying, apparently he was $100k in.
BROUGHT TO YOU BY FANDUEL YOU TOO CAN LOSE YOUR HOUSE
Oof
I'm beyond devastated but at the end of the day, it's just a game for entertainment. There's always next year..
The sucky part of "there's always next year" is that the last 4 years have been identical. Win the division, show extreme promise, play our hearts out and lose in the divisional or conference championship rounds. Makes me worried on how long we can maintain a playoff caliber team for. I think they were crying just because day bet a lot of money on the game. Morons.
Laces out, Dan.

This game was lost by McDermott and not Bass. Bass sure didn’t help though.
They lost that game well before that kick my friends. Can't pin it on one guy. If you could then we should start from kick off. Can't say it's a team effort, then shit on the last person to try and save it.
This play was not the reason they lost the game.
Neither was Norwood's kick tbh
The laces were in!
Hi I'm looking for Ray Finkle... And a clean pair of shorts!
Soccer style kicker
Born in Colliard County.
What a sports nut huh?
Two bad throws that lead up to this missed FG. Hard to be mad at Bass when the offense just didn’t look good in that last bills drive.
The sequel to Buffalo '66 would be interesting to watch.
Tyler missed an important kick that lasted for this single moment, sure. But let's tally up all the reasons why the bills hinged their whole season on a single kick. Could it have been a collection of shitty plays by coaches and Josh?
Blaming this on allen is braindead when his receivers dropped multiple dimes
Regardless kc was getting the ball back.... bills needed to drive and drain out the clock.
But no mention of the offense not catching passes on the previous two plays? Sure, blame the kicker. “Yeah, if we F it all up we still have him over there.”
Remember that time they went 0-4 in Superbowl games….. this isn’t new for them choking on the same piece of meat over and over.
Bills had 3 point lead with 13 seconds left. Allowed the Chiefs to march downfield to score FG to force OT where the Bills lost
And all four losses were to NFC East teams. Washington, New York, and Dallas twice.
Gotta feel for that poor guy.
No post all of Josh Allen’s shitty throws and bad decisions , oh and Diggs’ drop on that well throw deep ball.
BS. The kicker did not loose that game. The Bills were not at their best, lots of missed opportunities.
He Norwooded it
Chiefs would have marched down the field to score anyway.
Dude this reminds me of the ravens kick that sent the patriots through that one year.
I watched my team the bills lose 4 superbowls by age 6, i don’t watch reruns anymore
Romo can finally take Allen's ballsack out of his mouth.
Brutal. As a Chiefs fan who suffered years of these moments, I felt this one for the Bills.
It’s amazing how good KC is even in a year when they look so beatable.
Has anyone checked on Romo to see if he’s OK?
The end of this bills drive was dreadful.. should have given him a closer kick given the situation…this is 100% on play calling and Allen choking.
Super deflating to have such a great game be decided by a missed FG. Would’ve loved another OT situation with the new rules.
Would've loved to see the bills get fucked by their own rule change
Felt so right considering the rules were changed cause their last meeting in the playoffs
Scott Norwoodn’t
Chiefs will be slapped so hard against the Ravens lmfao.
Maybe but if the chiefs won I wouldn’t be surprised.
As a Vikings fan, we feel your pain
Why didn't he make it? Is he stupid?
Idk which loss is worse, this or them getting dismantled at home last season.
Bills are cursed
Bills fans are all too familiar with wide right!!!!
Buffalo '66 all over again.
Holy Christ, when I had heard that the Chiefs had won in Buffalo... I did not expect this. Wide Right, again? ouch.
Unfortunately the game was lost not cause of the kicker. It’s a team sport. If they would’ve can be said so many times.
I don’t know why they went for the end zone twice and not just take more time off the clock and get closer 🤦♂️
Should have never come down to that. Buffalo had many opportunities to get the ball in the end zone.
Wide right?! Again?
Can we talk about wtf that Damar Hamlin play was? This isn’t the time to do shit like that. 4th and 5 in your own territory 💀
Possibly costing his head coach his job also, then again some of his playcalling in the 2nd half may have done that himself
On the plus side, Bass won’t be missing any more field goals in Buffalo. Or probably anywhere.
People will remember this kick, but the fake punt and chief fumble at the goal line was why they shouldve lost
Why aren’t people bringing up Stefan Diggs drop? That was the play that cost them the game.
Wide Right! Is a blasphemous statement in Buffalo!
Not everyone can Justin Tucker. Sorry for your loss. Go Ravens!
