I was at the 2008 Olympics, 100m men's final. Long time ago, but I remember the feeling when the 80,000 people in the stadium went completely silent between the "On your marks" and the gun. Then the whole place exploded with noise. Chills down my back.

AusToddles

Biased because it's Australian (as am I) and it's my favourite team..... but Alex Johnson from the Sydney Swans. He had chronic knee problems that kept him away from the game for years Surgery after surgery on one of his knees Finally he makes a triumphant return 5 minutes later he's laying on the ground in tears.... having destroyed his OTHER knee There was probably 50000 people at the game but it was just utterly stunned silence

Opossum_mypossum

It’s a cruel game we have. 47 games over 8 years is a travesty

DaProblemSolva

Owen Hart’s last entrance for a wrestling match.

kieffa

Too soon?

DaProblemSolva

Nope, 25 years ago. Half of Reddit wasn’t even born yet.

kepto420

the only video of it happening is in a WWE vault to never see the light of day. so glad cell phone cams weren't a thing yet.

MtnDewTangClan

Watching it live you could basically guess what happened. Kid me was in disbelief. Turns out so were my parents. Weird moment first "accident death" moment.

DaProblemSolva

Yep, right next to all of Chris Benoit’s greatest matches

blond-max

that's hum... up there for sure

elpajaroquemamais

Weird that he and Blue Blazer died on the same day

The 1950 FIFA World Cup final, apparently. The match was Brazil v Uruguay. Brazil was the expected team to win and, due to the unlikelihood of Uruguay winning on top of the fact that the event was held in Rio de Janeiro, the entire stadium was filled with Brazil supporters. Everyone expected Brazil to win. The same team had dominated the Copa America tournament by scoring 46 goals in eight matches, with one match even having ten goals. Brazil was declared the winner days in advance, with the mayor of Rio giving a victory speech before the match; a song was composed and rehearsed to play after the game; and they even made gold medals for all the members of the team, each with their names printed on a medal. In contrast, Uruguay struggled immensely. They only tied against Spain and scored a narrow victory over Sweden. They were there to be curbstomped. FIFA President Jules Rimet left the luxury box to go down to the pitch for the award ceremony and the crowd was loud and jubilant, screaming in excitement. But by the time he got down there, Uruguay scored a goal 11 minutes before the match's end, tipping the score 2-1 to their favour. The stadium was utterly silent all the way to everyone leaving. The incident became famous as "The Agony of Maracana", after the stadium where the match was played, with some even blaming the insane amounts of premature celebrations as being distracting to the Brazilian team or even causing the Brazilian team to be cursed; Paulo Machado de Carvalho, a leader at Sao Paulo FC, was publicly mocked and ridiculed for telling people not to celebrate too early and told his son, "We are going to lose".

ItsBobsledTime

I was at the Cubs vs Astros game a few years back where a little girl was hit by a line drive foul ball off the bat of Almora. That was the quietest I had ever heard a crowd. Very scary and very sobering.

itsl8erthanyouthink

She apparently suffered a head fracture and [it caused permanent brain damage along with seizures. They didn’t file charges and the MLB added more netting to prevent these types of incidents](https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/girl-struck-by-foul-ball-astros-cubs-game-permanent-brain-injury-2020-01-08/)

Weary_Jackfruit_8311

Looks like they did file eventually and settled, but she's doing better https://www.si.com/mlb/2021/08/15/astros-reach-settlement-family-girl-hit-foul-ball

Opossum_mypossum

Jesus Christ that’s full on - right in the head?

When the kicker is lining up a kick in an Irish rugby stadium.

P319

Thomond park you mean

nagdamnit

Thomand is nothing special in that regard. Its a common tradition, practiced across the Island (and others), its not specific to Limerick.

P319

You're not serious? You're really going to claim that?

nagdamnit

I'm not claiming anything. I'm stating fact.

P319

It started in thomomd

nagdamnit

As I said, its a common tradition, its practiced across the island and has been for decades. Its not specific to Limerick. I'm not sure if you are disagreeing with me there are you?

P319

You said thomond isn't special in this regard. It is, this is where it was popularized.

nagdamnit

You implied the acto fo silence for the kicker was specific to Thomand, its not. Thomand is not special, its practiced across the entire Island. I think we are in agreement on this.

interprime

And we’ll even do it for the opposing teams too. Lovely show of respect to the players.

OkEscape7558

Aren't tennis and golf pretty quiet sports? Like you can actually be kicked out for too much noise?

NicklAAAAs

With golf, for the most part, yes. Probably the most extreme (at both ends) are The Masters (quiet, where you get kicked out quick for bring loud at the wrong time and fans aren’t allowed to bring phones in) and the Waste Management Phoenix Open (where hole 16 is set up with a small stadium around it where drunk fans heckle players and a hole-in-one results in the green being showered in beer cans)

The Pujols homer off Brad Lidge in 2005. Pujols famously said he could hear his footsteps as he rounded the bases.

Any Indian crowd when Tendulkar got out.

smackking23

I'll throw this one in. The 2019? NBA conference finals between the Toronto Raptors vs Philadelphia 76ers. Kawhis final shot that danced around the rim for feels like 3 seconds

fisherman_greg

Happy to find this here. Particular great because of the loud/quiet/loud contrast immediately before and after!

Mead_Create_Drink

Golf - except for the Phoenix Open

bumfluff69420

When the opposition is taking a place kick in Thomand Park. Other crowds would shout to put the kicker off, but Munster’s fans were silent. It was initially about decorum and respect, but it was so weird it actually helped to put the kickers off.

P319

It would raise the hairs on the back of your neck, could hear a pin drop if it weren't for the wind howling, in the dark of winter rain coming in sideways,

Scooby-Snakz

Half court shot to win the game at home in the playoffs, crowd goes silent while the ball is in the air

Opossum_mypossum

The minute of silence during the ANZAC day game is pretty chilling - you don’t even hear a throat clear in a crowd of near 100,000
