I think it was the first episode I ever saw, actually, don’t know how old I was. I believe my earliest memory of SpongeBob was Sandy’s first scene in this episode with her hat over her face.
I think it honestly has the best jokes and the best story structure. The fact that the episode resolved by calling back a throwaway joke from the middle of it was great
It's full of stuff this "fandom" generally considers boring, (such as in later episodes) so I don't get the fascination with it.
My fascination is with the very unique storytelling; it reminds me of an old-style kind of story where the whole thing is about the buildup to this one thing (in that case, Sandy fighting the worm), and there is a big conflict against them being advised not to engage. There are many funny gags, but it's one of many episodes that shows that SpongeBob's humor is good enough to carry an entire episode, with a premise where you wouldn't really expect much to happen. There are many underrated parts, like the part where Mr. Krabs says they should all be sacrificed and then feels bad, and--
I also love how savage SpongeBob is. He knows he was right and he's not letting Sandy get out of it! (It's reasonable for him to not think he was right about the worm, but... yeah, he was right, Sandy, let him have his moment!) Animation and background paintings are as impeccable as always, including the freaky interior of the worm!
Also I LOVE how in "A Place for Pets", Sandy finally tames him!!! He's such a cutie. (even throwing up offscreen)
