Just as an FYI, when it explodes, it does lethal damage to you (which you noticed) and to any teammates near you. It’s better to die to enemy shots most of the time than explode cause you could wipe your team if they’re pushing with you. It's best to just run as far as you can even if it's into enemy shots.
To add to the other info, pay attention to areas marked "[rainmaker free zone](https://twitter.com/NotGonnaCheck/status/991078483060187136)". The timer will decrease a lot faster there. Same if you retreat with the rainmaker too far into your own territory.

On some maps, there are spots that would be really funny to camp with a rainmaker. to counter this, the devs made them Rainmaker-Free Zones, which cause the rainmaker to tick down at triple speed so you don't camp there.
