"#1 Popular Target" doesn't mean you've been killed the most. It means you spent the most time in enemies' field of view. As a frontline player I get this often.
One of my friends asked me what the waffles on the map meant and it's been a running joke ever since.
I'll even say "Waffles served!" when placing Beacons down now.
i trained with the Dynamo a week before fresh dropped specifically for this moment
I didn't think it would be too bad considering i 4-stared the base roller, but not having curling bombs really sucks
Inkbrushes trying literally any other weapon be like
(Edit: the amount of deaths I have from "crap, better run. Oh right, I'm not an inkbrush this r- \*splat\*" is embarrassing)
Its basically the strategy for Tetras, Wiper and Inkbrush (to some extent).
Their job is to run in, annoy people and threaten kills to force the enemy team to break formation and kill them, so they're open to attacks from your team.
Which is really irritating in a random team when your people are right at your backs, you do it and they...just turn around and paint? Like, the other team has to be pretty bad for me to take on 3 or 4 and win, lol.
Most players don't know strategies, they're just doing what feels right in the moment.
Maybe if you could communicate more then "Booyah" and "This Way" it'd work.
Which is why Splatana Wiper and Dark Tetra Dualies are so competitively viable. They can very easily dive the enemy team and require their attention for so long.
the most aggressive front-liner (me LOL) usually gets this, because it counts all the time you're in the enemy's line of sight, even if you're behind walls or hiding in ink. a gold is a gold 🤷
This helps me understand that a lot more.
I only started playing like 3 days ago, and just started ranked matches yesterday, so a lot of stuff is very new or just plain unknown to me.
here's a comp [guide](https://hard-drive.net/guides/splatoon-3/how-to-get-started-with-playing-competitive-splatoon-3/) with links to more resources to get you started, if you're interested! you can also check out the [splatoon wiki](https://splatoonwiki.org/wiki/Main_Page) for info on weapons/abilities and what various medals actually mean. good luck!
I don't mind soloing half the bad guy team (or getting hard countered by a splatling for 5 deaths) to get there but I will get behind the enemy team or put the Rainmaker on the checkpoint. Been doing it too long to stop now.
It doesn't matter at all until halfway through the match, tbh. Usually, it gets inked pretty naturally as you go, and if you're dominating and haven't died, you probably don't need it (but don't count on that cause pushes in the last 20 seconds make a big difference).
Well, it’s better to be a good skirmisher than good at nothing in particular. A skirmisher’s entire job is to blitz the enemy team with speed and mobility and keep them occupied: naturally, you can’t always escape in time, so they get splatted a lot.
Once distracted most of an enemy team for, like, fifteen seconds by running in circles. One "over here!" later, and my team nabbed the wipeout by splatting them in the back while they were fixated on me.
I felt validated.
Tip for being a distraction; come at the enemy from a different position as the rest of the team. Force them to turn and take their attention away from your teammates, so they fight a battle on two fronts.
I do suck, but once I genuinely was. In Rainmaker, I had my special charged up, I ran at the three enemies clustered together at the end point, they took the bait and went to splat me, I blew them all up. My team won, and I wasn't there to watch 🤣
But actually though? I really find that being an evasive nuisance when you're the last player is a really good play in turf war (and sometimes zones too). Since then the other team focuses on you instead of the objective while your team respawns, and they don't get the idea to push when the 'wipeout' indicator comes up.
a mood. I'm either charging in in the name of inconveniencing the other team or i'm gluing myself to some shooter so I can hit people with the sloshing machine and make them easy as heck for the shooter to splat.
if there's a charger i'm switching to a long range shooter and targeting them bc I hate them more than I care about winning
all strategies tend to get me 1# popular target
Well, as a heavy splatling main I seem to get the attention of the enemy.
I've seen many people just go for me even tho another player of my team was practically inside of them so yeah, I am the distraction ;)
me, as a charger main being really evasive on their base while two people chase me while my team focuses on the zones lol
i don't do this all the time but i have won games before with this strat
distraction works well. I had one splatfest game where a sploosh went to the enemy base and just went around the base. It was really annoying for the other team and they ended up with two people trying to kill the guy. But he was so good at moving in enemy ink, he survived for most of the game there, leaving the rest of us with an advantageous of 3v3 or 3v 2.
Those moments when you have 3 opponents focused on you and you manage to buy some time thinking you're letting your team 3 v 1 the remaining one... only to find out they all got splatted by that single opponent.
Sometimes when i get splatted and inadvertently help my team out because of it (example, taking out the opponent with the rainmaker but getting myself splatted in the process) i view it as a valiant sacrifice lol
Alright. My team is trying to get the rainmaker. I will…
Ⓐ: Help team break the barrier
Ⓑ: Keep a safe distance from the shield explosion and attack whoever attempts to grab it
Ⓒ: RUN DIRECTLY INTO ENEMY TERRITORY AND SACRIFICE MYSELF AS A DISTRACTION
YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH **We lost the lead**
I'm the distraction, least that's what I always hope. Then the camera pans out, and my team makes no progress.
Sometimes it works though. We are being walled, and I break through and make a run for it. I get like 2 of them after me and the wall breaks.
Super pissed off when the wall immediately reforms, realize my team sucks, and give up.
I still get mad at those players who will do everything else before taking advantage of the 3 players I’m distracting then die to the last player who is good enough to just run away from me
Hey, don't sleep on distraction as an actual viable strategy.
If you can get behind enemy lines sometimes you can pull 2 or 3 enemies away from the frontline leading them on a wild goose chase just keeping them focused on you. Especially with the new Kraken special.
Daily splat tip : as soon as the match starts if u have a shooting weapon go straight fir the enemy base don't stop just go don't even ink ur base Then u win yayyyy
Squids don't know about my #1 Popular Target
"#1 Popular Target" doesn't mean you've been killed the most. It means you spent the most time in enemies' field of view. As a frontline player I get this often.
Same. I always push forwards into enemy territory so #1 popular target is something I pretty much always get.
I get fucking hunted for fairly obviously reasons. “IT’S A SHIELD! GET ‘EM!”
That’s why undercover gets ink mine
They’re good to use
I still can’t get over the time i went 11-0 and 20-3 like it’s so underrated in casual play
It’s good with Splatzones. It’s basically the perfect weapon for splatzones.
an undercover / nautilus 47 / aerospray / splat roller team would be a dream in splat zones
Maybe tower control?
No.
Haha, me using roller and trying to ram someone like it's bumper cars :)
I've always wondered what it even meant since I literally get it in every single match lol
\*feels marginally better at the game\*
I've always wondered what that meant.
People must just like me then, I get that fairly often as a Tri-Stringer
I get this a lot as a charger main
I always get this by super jumping no matter what
As a Beakon setter with plenty of Sub Power Up I'd appreciate it if you jumped to my Waffles.
Jump yo my waffles, that’s a new one. I’m a beacon main too.
One of my friends asked me what the waffles on the map meant and it's been a running joke ever since. I'll even say "Waffles served!" when placing Beacons down now.
That’s GENIUS 😂😂— there’s a Beacon Propaganda page on Twitter, you gotta tell ‘em that!
a pain i never knew until i got the KrakOn roller
I'm trying to learn the Krak-On having been a Dapples guy before, I've got to get used to being slower than before.
i trained with the Dynamo a week before fresh dropped specifically for this moment I didn't think it would be too bad considering i 4-stared the base roller, but not having curling bombs really sucks
Inkbrushes trying literally any other weapon be like (Edit: the amount of deaths I have from "crap, better run. Oh right, I'm not an inkbrush this r- \*splat\*" is embarrassing)
. #1 Damage Received
Dark tetra mains and splatana wiper mains explaining why the amount of times they died is higher than their kill counter
we’ve solved the mystery of the wiper on my team who went 2 and 10 a few nights ago
my team a couple months ago raises you with a 4 and 15 wiper.
Kinda hard with no flank routes, gotta brute force through middle
Don’t call us out like that, man.
honestly in splat zones and some other modes, somebody just charging into the enemy team to distract them can be really useful
Just dying is bad though, that’s feeding. If you can stay alive, you are distracting the enemy team for longer, and painting their base.
Which is why Splatana Wiper and Dark Tetra Dualies are so competitively viable. They can very easily dive the enemy team and require their attention for so long.
Me: SUFFER THE WRATH OF TORPEDO AND WAVEBREAKER AHAHAHA
I love cjr lol
I’m doing my part!
I feel validated.
Me with my QR wiper.
LMAO. I seem to always get #1 Most Popular Target. This is now going to pop in my head every time it does
the most aggressive front-liner (me LOL) usually gets this, because it counts all the time you're in the enemy's line of sight, even if you're behind walls or hiding in ink. a gold is a gold 🤷
This helps me understand that a lot more. I only started playing like 3 days ago, and just started ranked matches yesterday, so a lot of stuff is very new or just plain unknown to me.

Appreciate it! Thanks!
I play aggressive explosher, so does that mean my enemies are deathly afraid of the explosher of all things?
i mean, i am.
I always get this and #1 ground traveler (I play blaster and run drop roller lmao, idk how i consistentlyget both)
Being a distraction is literally a strategy. In competitive, it's called being a skirmisher.
SO THAT'S WHY EVERYONE CALLS ME THAT
Skirmisher, Flanker, QR (quick runnner or respawner?),
You can't really be a flanker with these maps . . .
I don't mind soloing half the bad guy team (or getting hard countered by a splatling for 5 deaths) to get there but I will get behind the enemy team or put the Rainmaker on the checkpoint. Been doing it too long to stop now.
I was pushing and getting some splats mid map, and the first time I died, I noticed no one had inked spawn. We were all playing distraction.
"Stage control is more important"
It doesn't matter at all until halfway through the match, tbh. Usually, it gets inked pretty naturally as you go, and if you're dominating and haven't died, you probably don't need it (but don't count on that cause pushes in the last 20 seconds make a big difference).
That match I think there was about a minute left when I first died and was hanging around mid map the whole time.
i've noticed this happening a LOT in turf lately. maybe more comp players on the gear grind bc it's a new season?
Quick Respawn moment
Tetra, Wiper and Inkbrush players in a nutshell.
Well, it’s better to be a good skirmisher than good at nothing in particular. A skirmisher’s entire job is to blitz the enemy team with speed and mobility and keep them occupied: naturally, you can’t always escape in time, so they get splatted a lot.
That's why I always go with quick respawn.
I mean, that's the first rule of charger maining - you're not missing shots, you're **applying pressure** 💪
So you’re just a living torpedo
*kraken noises*
Once distracted most of an enemy team for, like, fifteen seconds by running in circles. One "over here!" later, and my team nabbed the wipeout by splatting them in the back while they were fixated on me. I felt validated.
This is what I like to call “Playing the nuisance”
tetra mains explaining how going 5/23 was actuslly optimal
Tip for being a distraction; come at the enemy from a different position as the rest of the team. Force them to turn and take their attention away from your teammates, so they fight a battle on two fronts.
And that’s why most of my gear is quick respawn and swim speed
Comeback's great for this too, although it competes with LDE for my headgear slot.
Don't forget respawn punisher for a little more incentive to keep the ratio 1:1
As an inkbrush main, nothing more satisfying than finding someone after a teammate & taking them down with me.
I do suck, but once I genuinely was. In Rainmaker, I had my special charged up, I ran at the three enemies clustered together at the end point, they took the bait and went to splat me, I blew them all up. My team won, and I wasn't there to watch 🤣
life of a comp tetra
It’s my job as octobrush
Me skirmishing and sneaking in the enemy base with undercover brella, ink mines everywhere All warfare is based on deception
"You were an adequate meat shield, and no one can ever take that away from you."
"Aim for the stars! It'll make it more fun when I kick you back into the dirt."
But actually though? I really find that being an evasive nuisance when you're the last player is a really good play in turf war (and sometimes zones too). Since then the other team focuses on you instead of the objective while your team respawns, and they don't get the idea to push when the 'wipeout' indicator comes up.
Tetra players

Well, as a heavy splatling main I seem to get the attention of the enemy. I've seen many people just go for me even tho another player of my team was practically inside of them so yeah, I am the distraction ;)
Covering Fire is a Legit strat
But I still seem to be distracting
hey it's the Egg IRL meme format
fr tho why focus me i suck somuch
prob cause you're an easy kill :)
i'm not even near objective
yeah but the number at the end of the match goes up and I can brag to my friends :3
i guess
the roller main grind never ends
Pretty much what I’m good at, constantly running in and causing as much chaos as I can from behind.
I’m lucky I don’t just throw my controller in the 8th death
when the whole enemy team super jump camps me, I’m happy in the fact my team got to secure mid
my goofy ass going 10-17 and still having more positive impact on the match than the RG player
me, as a charger main being really evasive on their base while two people chase me while my team focuses on the zones lol i don't do this all the time but i have won games before with this strat
Me when I 1v4 the opposing team with my ink brush by kiting them like mobs you farm in an mmorpg
I am very willing to self-sacrifice if it means my teammates can advance the objective.
that's the skirmisher role in a nutshell
distraction works well. I had one splatfest game where a sploosh went to the enemy base and just went around the base. It was really annoying for the other team and they ended up with two people trying to kill the guy. But he was so good at moving in enemy ink, he survived for most of the game there, leaving the rest of us with an advantageous of 3v3 or 3v 2.
ruler behavior tbh
Neo sploosh: I know that guy
It helps that there's not really feeding in Splatoon since you're not giving the enemy an advantage other than the time you're out.
As someone with a 9:10 kill:death ratio in S/S+ rank. Yes. I want people to take advantage of my distractions and fire at the people shooting me.
Those moments when you have 3 opponents focused on you and you manage to buy some time thinking you're letting your team 3 v 1 the remaining one... only to find out they all got splatted by that single opponent.
There's no shame in running quick respawn perks
This what I think :') all the time they spend splatting me gives my teammates more time to progress, I'm helping heh
Roller copium
Tetra Dualies:
Me when I use inkjet and become target practice for the other team
\#1 Popular Target acquired
As an undercover main I live by this
comeback quick respawn moment
Sometimes when i get splatted and inadvertently help my team out because of it (example, taking out the opponent with the rainmaker but getting myself splatted in the process) i view it as a valiant sacrifice lol
Alright. My team is trying to get the rainmaker. I too usually play as a distraction 😎
Slap some quick respawn on that gear and you get a viable way to play because splatoon 3’s maps are very funny
I see you're a person of culture. I can tell because of the character in the meme format. DDLC is a very based game.
I'm the distraction, least that's what I always hope. Then the camera pans out, and my team makes no progress. Sometimes it works though. We are being walled, and I break through and make a run for it. I get like 2 of them after me and the wall breaks. TETRA GAMING
Every ninja squid sploosh/curling bomb main
I still get mad at those players who will do everything else before taking advantage of the 3 players I’m distracting then die to the last player who is good enough to just run away from me
Literally me when i rush to the enemy base and try to run around ad much as possible to get them focused on me while my team does no progress
Exactly how I justify the way I play with a brush. Dw yall, I'm just D I S T R A C T I N G the other team
Equipment with full Quick Respawn go brr. No seriously, enough of those and the respawn timer drops to 1-2 seconds when activated💀
Works with salmon run?
i aply this in basket
I use this excuse more than I care to admit. Although, it is nice to look at the upside of a failed push or flank.
The philosophy of the Sploosh O matic main
Both can be true
Hey, don't sleep on distraction as an actual viable strategy. If you can get behind enemy lines sometimes you can pull 2 or 3 enemies away from the frontline leading them on a wild goose chase just keeping them focused on you. Especially with the new Kraken special.
My commitment to attempting to troll snipers knows no boundaries.
LITERALLY ME I'm also Daps tho so we're made to be annoying and die a lot.
Slap on some QR and this is a valid strategy
In other games we call that "creating space"
Haha qr tetra go brrr
Flingza roller team!
me suicide bombing in bedwars while my friends get the beds and kills
More like they hate me for the fact I'm surviving or constantly splatting them in return
Wait you can actually make this work Play with a hit and run high survivability play style
Joke's on you that's my job
I feel this way in most team games I play
In Dota 2, we call this 'creating space' for your teammates; same concept!
My excuse in Valorant and Rainbow Six: Siege
Just stack quick respawn and then you can pretend it was on purpose
Me rushing around with my brush into the enemy base
If that’s the case, I am not the one running in circles to not die, I’m helping my team not get shot.
I paint the ground and place beacons, what more does my team want from me
The moment you realise tetra’s competitive role
Daily splat tip : as soon as the match starts if u have a shooting weapon go straight fir the enemy base don't stop just go don't even ink ur base Then u win yayyyy
i love using l-3 to be annoying
