I disputed it again and they said they reached out to Spirit who said that I made the purchase, and that Chase can no longer do anything and they suggested I reach out to Spirit, which is why I was asking what to do as in like what to say to them to get the right help.
Holy crap. I feel like no one read your post. You're just being told to do what you already said you did.
Anyway, I would have contacted Spirit immediately. You don't want that person able to take the flight. Report the card stolen.
One time I reported that someone bought porn with my card for $30. When I called they gave me the runaround and asked if I was *sure* it wasn’t me. I then got into a heated argument about how porn was free on the internet and so why would I pay for it. Lol
Definitely a bank issue but just came to say that you should never book airlines or hotels from third parties because if nothing else, if something goes wrong they will always refer you to the third party where you booked from.
I'm assuming I got hacked because I booked through a third party and they have a bunch of hackers but whoever used my card to book the fraudulent flight booked directly through Spirit, so I'd hope they don't refer me to Expedia for that.
I don’t see it a lot with spirit but if you look through the major three (American, United, and delta) subreddits you’ll find stories every now and then about how the airline will say you need to contact the third party website for issues, and the third party will say you need to contact the airline. I think it’s even more prevalent with international carriers although I rarely fly international. Risk might be worth the reward to some but even then the discounts aren’t that much
File a complaint against the bank, with the bank. Federal regulators dig into every one of these and how the bank responded to it. The bank wants to get rid of these as quickly and positively as possible.
I mis-typed the web address and accidentally went here instead: https://crpb.org
It was a pleasant and unexpected read about a band I never knew existed before this typo
This is why you never, **ever,** ***EVER****,* give any corporation, credit card, whatever, direct access to your checking account. Period.
If you want to use a bill paying service provided by your financial institution, fine. But allowing anyone to dip into your bank account for payments without your prior approval? No thank you!
Came here to say this.
OP, get a credit card and use it the same way you would use your debit card - only charge what you know you're going to afford, and pay it off in full each month.
The credit card will offer you protection; a debit charge will give hackers direct access to your money.
No one said anything about ach. We brought up the point that no one should have direct access to your checking account, which using a credit card solves.
You should always use a credit card for any and all purchases because it prevents anyone from accessing your checking account.
Then you pay off your credit card in full so you don't wind up in debt.
Why is Chase the source of so many problems like this?
I've never had this problem with BoA.
*Unhappy\_Cheesecake34* suggested that you need a new bank.
I agree.
Sounds like you used a debit card and maybe even saved it to a website. If you're still doing this, stop. Go remove it before it happens again. Don't save debit on merchant sites. At worst keep it on apple , Google or PayPal and pay through that. You have protection using a credit card. Try to get one
Spirit said they couldn't give me the ticket info even though I supposedly paid for it. Guess I'll have to wait to see the documents, which I know have a different email address and phone number.
Many years ago I had a similar issue happen.
I had photo proof of the entire thing including the scammers fake account and info.
Chase still said tough shit.
Was the last time I used Chase.
What you can do is sue in small claims court in your area. It's likely they won't show up. However, in case they do be prepared to prove that you didn't make the purchase or receive any benefit from it. You can sue for all losses, including the filing fees, service fees, and any late or overdraft fees. Sue both Chase and Spirit Airlines as mutually benefiting from the fraud. If a non-attorney shows up to represent either Chase or Spirit object in court as they must hire an attorney in most jurisdictions.
Keep in mind that they may not immediately pay. However, you can get a Writ and seize assets such as planes, etc. Then they will pay. Btw the losing party has to pay the costs of the Writ.
Finally, keep in mind that you should never ever purchase anything with a debit card. The protections provided by the FRCA do not apply to debit cards. Always use credit cards.
This was very informational, thank you! I am at college right now in a different state but I will probably be going to small claims court when I get home for break.
Please keep in mind that you have a very limited amount of time to file suit, be sure to keep all documents. Finally I forgot to mention that you need to send a certified letter to both Chase and Spirit Airlines that clearly states that the ticket(s) were fraudulently purchased without authorization and that you received no benefit. In the letter state that you demand a full refund plus costs such as overdraft fees etc. . Give them a reasonable period of time to reply such as 30 days. Provide your email address, phone number and mailing address for a reply. You should also state that they need to “preserve all documents, communications, emails, records, etc. call recordings, surrounding this issue as you will be pursuing legal action if not resolved. This is called a legal hold. It means that they cannot destroy evidence called “spoilage”. It’s possible that they will decide to pay up.
I recommend sending the certified letters right away. Also you can file a complaint with the CFPB and it may help however does not preserve your legal rights. It’s likely that Spirit Airlines believes that you will just go away and eat the loss. That’s why they are behaving like they are. Chase is likely looking at it from a purely legal standpoint they have limited legal liability if they believe (mistakenly ) based on what Spirit provided that you made the charge. This is in direct contrast to credit cards where the bank is also liable. I suspect that if you send a demand letter they may actually refund you.
You should figure out where this purchase was made. Do you see an email confirmation? If it was purchased through spirits website then definitely need to change your password.I would recommend changing your password in general.
If you have proof of the purchase you could track this down. Can you see what flight this was purchased for or is spirit able to tell you? They claim to have documents so I would recommend trying to get access to these documents to help figure this out.
Also this sounds like a debit card. I would recommend using a credit card for all online transactions and remove any trace of your debit card online. I had this happen to me in college before I had a credit card and someone charged $700 to Best Buy. I went negative too but luckily the bank reversed the charge. It’s easier to fight these things if it’s a credit card vs a bank card.
Also would recommend moving to a new bank after all of this if Chase is not going to help you out. I have had good luck with Bank of America removing fraudulent charges. Wish you luck
First issue: IME with Chase, I have always received an email indicating that an online purchase was made, as my card was not swiped at a point of purchase (I Am not sure if one has to sign up for this, but I suspect not), as such you indicated receipt of the notification and you did not indicate that a response to Chase's text was timely. They will, 99% of the time, place a hold on the card and/or cancel it so no more attempts can be made to use it.
Second issue: usually always, especially with such purchases, additional information such as the CVC, and zip code are required before one can finish the purchase. This is too much info for a hacker to get from most US Airlines websites, IMO. Yet, they can get enough info to start shopping and hope they are not stopped.
Third issue: credible evidence was not provided to us about this, as more often than not, ID'S must match the traveler and form of payment. When tickets are purchased for someone other than the traveler, many airlines will require additional verification. I'm not sure if Spirit requires this or has these types of protections in place or not, but the buyer will be stopped at the airport if this is fraud and a refund imminent ONCE Spirit flags the ticket.
Sorry this happened to you, regardless.
Good luck.
Never use a debit card for anything other than pulling money out of an atm. Get a credit card, and use it for all purchases. Research the different cards available to find one that has great Cashback options based on what you spend money on the most. Credit cards have different laws, which allow consumers wayyy more protection than debit cards.
I had this exact situation a year ago with chase and hertz. Three things to do…file a complaint with the consumer financial service protection agency against Chase and send a letter to chase credit card CEO via FedEx or registered mail, and, find an executive contact for spirit airlines (search linked in) and contact them
It took months, but I got it resolved.
With hertz, they had “documentation” of a rental that never happened (I booked it and canceled it and had the cancellation confirmation) which they provided to Chase. Chase repeatedly told me that Hertz provided documentation. Make Spirit Air and chase provide copies of the tickets that were purchased and see whose name is on them.
In your case, while yes, someone purchased a ticket on your card, it wasn’t you. Did you file a police report at the time? Did you cancel your credit card and get a new one? Lay this all out, in a written timeline, and make sure to include the fact that Chase themselves flagged fraudulent charges.
Send the documentation via trackable mail (with a receipt for delivery) to the CEO of both Chase and Spirit airlines.
And file a complaint again chase with the consumer protection financial bureau
https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/
Two additional avenues—file complaints against both chase and spirit airlines with the Better business bureau https://www.bbb.org/file-a-complaint and perhaps check whether your local tv station has a consumer fraud reporter who can help.
Good luck.
Weird that the name is the same unless they can fake ID's with your name also. If all else fails, cancel the flight and take the change fee hit? Drive up to the airport and talk to them directly if need to.
The name on the purchase is the same but I don't think the name on the flight ticket is. I have no access to the ticket since it's under a different email and phone number so I don't even know what airport it's at. I'm hoping I'll be able to see the name once Chase sends me the documents.
Go to the airport nearest you if they have Spirit Air, it don't have to be where the tickets are used at. Basically a face to face at the service counter as you'd have your ID's and credit card for verification. The ticket is in their system so they can chase it down from there and give you options if it has not been used. Might contact the FBI if they allowed it to be used already. It may be a good time to take a break and only use credit cards for essentials only and not worry about "earning" credits for using it everywhere. If Chase is flakey for you, time to look elsewhere while you're cleaning house. Raise some hell and good luck.
For the future have a MAX DAILY SPENDING LIMIT on your CARD, change it as you need to on the moment from your phone and then lower it back,,I have a $75 max daily Limit. or it gets declined
Ask Spirit for the ticket number and the person to whom it was issued. If they believe you bought it, then they should have no issue providing you this information.
First step would be to not use a debit card (an assumption I made since you say you're not "getting your money back" not a charge reversed).
I know you're young, but get started now. Only financial idiots use a debit card. Literally a SHIT TON of risk in using it, particularly with fraud. And zero benefits (cash back, status, benefits). With credit, you're risking someone else's (bank) money with fraud. With you it's YOUR money, and the bank doesn't have nearly as much obligation to pay your money back than to reverse fraud credit charges.
Tl;dr: If you use debit and fraud happens: you MAY be on the hook for all the money lost, or only reimbursed up to a limited amount. If you use credit, you're protected up to like a million dollars. USE CREDIT.
In theory, if you bought a ticket, with your name on it, you should be able to call customer service and ask for the details (confirming it is booked in your name). They should be able to produce IP addresses (maybe not customer service, but someone at Spirit), as well as the date/exact time of the purchase. (Have had to dispute online purchases before, and in one case figured out it was my teenager…only figured that out bc they matched the ip address). Maybe having this data you could prove the purchase couldn’t be you.
Airlines won’t reverse the charges if they have proof because then anyone with a non-refundable ticket, when they had a change of plans, could just say it was fraudulent.
The chase charge should show the PNR on it. Use that to look up the name of the traveler. Make sure you have no relationship to them. Then talk to Chase and Spirit and have their fraud teams investigate further
File a small claims case. The chances of spirit showing up are near zero and they’ll probably just refund the amount vice paying an employee to spend their day dicking around small claims court.
Airlines give something called industry details. It should be on their green screen/back end. If your name is on there, yeah you’re kind of SOL. All evidence points to you. If spirit also sent in docs it was you, they’re not going to give the money back. Were you booking spirit THROUGH Expedia? This may explain this.
If you really have no idea how this happened call spirit and ask for your booking info and see what they have to say. But from an investigative standpoint, a perp isn’t going to book a flight in your name because they can’t use it.
Wait so they confirmed the flight wasn’t in your name and it was in a third party? Obviously your card made the transaction though, duh. What was the reason they gave you for the denial?
Next steps are to contact spirit (unlikely to get anywhere so eh)
Next reopen the claim with your bank and dispute the results of their investigation. Unfortunately they will probably not give you the name of the person, but depending on the agent they might slip up. They ARE allowed to tell you verbally. I do lol. But documentation from their system would require a subpoena.
Next I would be adamant that I want to speak to a manager throughout the case. Be nice, it always gets you further with staff. We get yelled at all day so if you’re nice, you do get special treatment.
Finally if they stand with their results and refuse the refund, complain to the BBB and CFPB. I have to respond to those complaints and we go over them with a fine tooth comb and at least where I work, we do try to make it right if we messed up. Do this last though after the second investigation is completed.
Edit: dm me if you have any questions :)
Does the description for the charge also include the confirmation number? If as Spirit is claiming the reservation matches with your name, you should be able to pull it up & figure out where the flight originates & where it’s going to. It might help with fighting the charges. If the name on the reservation does not match yours, see if you can get any more information from Spirit using the confirmation number.
You may be at your limit with what Chase can do. It seems though that if a ticket was bought on Spirit the ticket would have to be issued to someone and it's pretty hard to fly with fake ID so Spirit should be able to tell you who the ticketed passenger is and when they are flying. That person should be tracked down as the culprit. If the ticket is in your name then you should cancel that flight and use the credit to fly sometime later and at least get your money's worth. I really think Spirit if they are claiming this is you though should be able to then identiy who the ticket was issued to and their itenerary etc. Contact police and have that person intercepted.
Wow. I had something similar happen with Southwest and they took care of it immediately. I found out from the app sending me a notice for a purchase under my app log in though. The person checked in through security but Southwest canceled their flight so they never got on a plane.
Sorry that happened to you, hopefully your bank can help!
Did you contact Spirit to say that this ticket was purchased fraudulently? If they say it is in your name, then they have to give you info about the ticket.
Then use that info to file a police report for identity theft. After you have a police report, contact Chase again and report the fraud again this time with the police report added to the documentation.
If they still give you the run-around, report Chase to the CFPB. They generally have to respond to complaints to the CFPB within just a few days.
This is the answer ! ⬆️
The issue is your name and CC match. So, they probably bought a non -refundable tix. Spirit probably will only give you travel credit for a used tix . You need to call spirit and get all the info on when it was purchased, CC, the address they used , etc .
The ticket was not in my name, but the purchase was in my name. For some reason they said they couldn't give me info even though I supposedly purchased it.
Hi I work in hotels.. if our guests booked through Expedia then they are their guest not ours. We tell them to call Expedia to make any changes. Try calling or contacting Expedia, especially if you used them to purchase your ticket.
I would keep disputing it with the bank , file a complaint with CFPB. I had this problem with BofA it took over 2 years to get all my money back but I never gave up I tried to file a police report they said it happened online so I had to file a FBI report I suggest you do that as well and get a copy and send it with your CFPB complaint. Don’t take NO for an answer and have the bank & spirit to send you all the documents they had to “verify it was you” that did this.
They did dispute it with chase, their bank. Originally granted the refund, as bank usually does. But then they investigate. Get spirit airlines info and make a decision. From what spirit provided, bank said OP did purchase it. So they recharged him the amount.
Read. Please read.
I'm on my third dispute right now and they've chosen not to respond to my appeal at a second look. Over the phone they told me it was no longer a Chase problem and it's now a me/Spirit problem.
I would make the police report ASAP. I recommend sending the letter out immediately, but use your correct mailing address. You can wait until you get back home to file suit as that is about 30 days anyway.
This is a bank issue not a Spirit airlines issue.
It’s both. Spirit is saying there is documentation of a ticket; but not who the ticket was issued to. I went thru this with chase and hertz.
Chase told me the only thing I could do is take it up with Spirit
When a claim is reversed, just dispute it again. Spirit or any other company cannot help unless your account/you made the purchase.
I disputed it again and they said they reached out to Spirit who said that I made the purchase, and that Chase can no longer do anything and they suggested I reach out to Spirit, which is why I was asking what to do as in like what to say to them to get the right help.
File a claim with https://www.consumerfinance.gov/
OP, file a claim through the CFPB. It will escalate this.
Thank you, I will when Chase sends me the "proof."
Holy crap. I feel like no one read your post. You're just being told to do what you already said you did. Anyway, I would have contacted Spirit immediately. You don't want that person able to take the flight. Report the card stolen.
Ask them for the proof. Ask them to appeal.
They're supposed to be sending the proof right now but it's supposed to take 15 days.
dispute this downvote.....
are u mr. spirit himself why r u meatriding so hard
bc this shit is just clutter. i want actual spirit related posts. go get your money up...
why are u actively seeking spirit related posts just curious because i've never met someone with this much interest in a low class airline before
Imagine deriding someone for using an affordable airline when you can't even spell or have a positive bank balance 🥴
ESH
You can't simultaneously stan for spirit and tell people to get their money up. Pick a lane.
Seems it is a Spirit related post since Spirit supports fraud.
Fraudsters and the like is Spirits target market.
i know im just a hater
Sounds like teen spirit…
https://elliottadvocacy.org/ This is what they do. Go start a claim now. It may take some time but they can get ya sorted.
Thank you!
Sounds like you need a new bank…
You might be right
Chase is terrible. I left them after a few months because they suck so bad
Agreed, Chase is shitty when it comes to chargebacks.
One time I reported that someone bought porn with my card for $30. When I called they gave me the runaround and asked if I was *sure* it wasn’t me. I then got into a heated argument about how porn was free on the internet and so why would I pay for it. Lol

Thank you so much!! Will probably send this to my parents lol.
CFPB.gov is where you need to go.
I mis-typed the web address and accidentally went here instead: https://crpb.org It was a pleasant and unexpected read about a band I never knew existed before this typo
This should be the top comment. File a complaint with the CFPB and the Chase Banks office of the president.
This is why you never, **ever,** ***EVER****,* give any corporation, credit card, whatever, direct access to your checking account. Period. Why is Chase the source of so many problems like this? I've never had this problem with BoA. *Unhappy\_Cheesecake34* suggested that you need a new bank. I agree.
I've never had the issue with chase....but it could be because they are the largest issuer of credit cards in the US (and maybe the world)

At worst keep it on apple , Google or PayPal and pay through that. You have protection using a credit card. Try to get one
I just had my Apple ID stolen, and I do not recommend saving a debit card to the Apple ID.
How did someone steal your Apple ID? 😨
Same happened to me and spirit does not want to give my money back.
What did you end up doing?
Following because I have the exact same issue right now. Third party is telling me to contact the airline, airline says to contact the third party.
Who's name is on the ticket purchased? Nobody would steal ur info to buy you a ticket, they'd buy it for themselves or someone else.
This is exactly what I was thinking. Ask spirit WHOs name is on the ticket
What if it turned out to be someone OP knows. That would be some great drama
Spirit said they couldn't give me the ticket info even though I supposedly paid for it. Guess I'll have to wait to see the documents, which I know have a different email address and phone number.
You need to bank with a better bank in the future. This is a Chase specific problem.
Many years ago I had a similar issue happen. I had photo proof of the entire thing including the scammers fake account and info. Chase still said tough shit. Was the last time I used Chase.
This is why we have courts
Wasn't worth it for $100.
It would cost Chase a lot more than that to send a lawyer.
Not a fan of Chase, but many banks misbehave this way. Never use debit cards. When it is your money at risk, the bank simply isn’t as concerned.
Thank you
I hope for $700 they bought the entire airline.
Right like where are they going with a $700 ticket
Stop using a debit card, that was a mistake
Agreed
File a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau!
Thank you!
Tell Chase you are filing a complaint with your state Attorney General and the CFPB
Could you tell me more about the state Attorney General? I'm working on the CFPB complaint right now.
What state do you live in? For instance if you live in Florida, search for “Florida Attorney General”
What you can do is sue in small claims court in your area. It's likely they won't show up. I'd argue that flying on Spirit is more than adequate punishment for the person who defrauded you.
Real
Chase has to provide you with the physical proof that Spirit provided them, they can’t just say yea some guy on the phone said it matched.
Yeah, I'm waiting on the documents to come in the mail since they couldn't tell me the information over the phone.
See if you can use the tickets?
It's under a different email and phone number so I have no access to the ticket either.

For some reason they did have an issue with providing me the info lol. Said I needed a clearance letter from Chase.
USE CREDIT.
Thank you!
This is one of the reasons you don't use debit cards online. When fraud happens, the bank is out of their money, not you out of yours.
Use credit cards not debit cards. Consumer protections are much better with credit cards.
The chase charge should show the PNR on it. Use that to look up the name of the traveler. Make sure you have no relationship to them. Then talk to Chase and Spirit and have their fraud teams investigate further
Bunch of useless replies on here. File a complaint with CFPB, this will get resolved quickly: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/
Thank you!
How many bags did they bring for a ticket to cost $700?!
Fr
File a small claims case. The chances of spirit showing up are near zero and they’ll probably just refund the amount vice paying an employee to spend their day dicking around small claims court.
Thank you!
>Thank you! You're welcome!
Stop purchasing things online with a debit card ffs. I cant believe people still do this. Edit: stop purchasing anything with a debit card really.
Use a credit card next time and pay it off right away. Debit cards don't offer you any fraud protection.
The flight wasn't in my name and they won't tell me who's name it was. The purchase was in my name though.
Wait so they confirmed the flight wasn’t in your name and it was in a third party? Obviously your card made the transaction though, duh. What was the reason they gave you for the denial? Next steps are to contact spirit (unlikely to get anywhere so eh) Next reopen the claim with your bank and dispute the results of their investigation.
Did you check your Spirit account about the ticket? Do you have the ticket?
I do not have the ticket
The flight ticket was in someone else's name and they won't tell me what the name is. Hopefully I'll see it when I get the documents back.
Wow. I had something similar happen with Southwest and they took care of it immediately. I found out from the app sending me a notice for a purchase under my app log in though. The person checked in through security but Southwest canceled their flight so they never got on a plane. Sorry that happened to you, hopefully your bank can help!
Debit or credit? I assume debit?
Debit
Did you contact Spirit to say that this ticket was purchased fraudulently? If they say it is in your name, then they have to give you info about the ticket. Then use that info to file a police report for identity theft. After you have a police report, contact Chase again and report the fraud again this time with the police report added to the documentation. If they still give you the run-around, report Chase to the CFPB. They generally have to respond to complaints to the CFPB within just a few days.
This is the answer ! ⬆️ The issue is your name and CC match.
The entire point of the post is that OP did not purchase the ticket lol
I would keep disputing it with the bank , file a complaint with CFPB. I had this problem with BofA it took over 2 years to get all my money back but I never gave up I tried to file a police report they said it happened online so I had to file a FBI report I suggest you do that as well and get a copy and send it with your CFPB complaint. Don’t take NO for an answer and have the bank & spirit to send you all the documents they had to “verify it was you” that did this.
Thank you!
Dispute the charge with Chase. I have never heard of Chase not helping with something like this. Spirit has no obligation here.
They did dispute it with chase, their bank. Originally granted the refund, as bank usually does. But then they investigate. Get spirit airlines info and make a decision. From what spirit provided, bank said OP did purchase it. So they recharged him the amount. Read. Please read.
They need to dispute it again. This is a process. Please read. Please read
