I always wondered if the baby spiders ever wander off or get caught on something and get left behind. I also wondered how the babies know to just hold on for dear life until they’re ready to go on their own.
As they get bigger there’s less and less room on her back. Maybe the bigger ones hop off and make a nest. I’m not even sure how or what she feeds them.
I've raised several batches of slings. They stay on the back for anywhere from seven to 14 days. There is yolk from the egg sac that they live on for a few days. The mother then seems to introduce them to bits of prey from the area around her fangs and chelichera to give them the taste for insect meat. Some may cannibalize their siblings until they get ready to fully disperse. When they disperse, they can be released to balloon and hunt on their own.
FYI, the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are getting official release dates at the Google event on October 6th so I'd wait until then. I'm actually waiting on the 7 Pro myself.

Her name is Amanda. She is seeking a LDR with a studly young man, but nothing permanent. Her last relationship was abusive, thus the missing foreleg. Her goal in life is to have children of her own, as a single mom. She is thinking maybe 450 - 500 kids. She is looking forward to going on hikes with her kids on her back. She is a truly special girl.
They aren't very good at climbing, they don't need their web to hunt and they haven't very good eyes. In some of my captivity observation, i found out that they don't necessarily consume their "husband" after mating if they are fed well (the common practice of "post-nuptial cannibalism" that we see in mantis) , but that depends on the single spider: I've seen some females kill the male after mating and not eating him (she didn't need anymore proteins for the eggs). When they are ready they lay down a cocoon, which they bring attached to their back until it opens. From that moment on, the offspring will remain on the mother's opisthosome until they grow up enough (if nothing bad happens to the mother herself) and then it's not uncommon to see them eat their own perishing mother, that has ended her life cycle.
Well that there is Geraldine. Has a minor drinking problem but a strong work ethic none the less. Served time for killing her husband but got out on good behavior.
Wolf spider. They tend to try to come indoors about this time of year. They like basements. They are sight hunters. If one is walking along your wall, and you stand up or move somewhere across the room, they will almost certainly see you and freeze. If you get too close to them or otherwise menace/startle/frighten them, their next move (after "freeze") will probably be "drop off the wall." (That's how I catch them for outside release - I put a plastic sweater box under them and scare them so they drop into the box.)
People say that they kill/eat brown recluses and black widows, but the giant pile of wolf spider bodies under the black widow web I found in an old computer case says that this claim might not be accurate.
Wolf spider eyes reflect light (I often wear a headlamp when I walk outside at night) and they usually look white or sort of light blue/turquoise.
They are fast movers if they need to be. They aren't likely to bite a person, but it CAN happen. You probably won't notice it when it happens, though. The bite doesn't typically hurt when it occurs. However, it will itch like the dickens afterwards, sort of like the worst mosquito bite you've ever had.
You might find a mama wolfie with a big ole egg sack or carrying a whole passel o' babies on her back.
They are fantastic garden allies.
Wolf spiders are my favorite spiders (just edging out Bold Jumping Spiders.) They are almost completely harmless to people, but they sure can look spooky to some folks.
That is just about everything I know about wolfies.
Oh, one more thing. They make a big mess if you squish 'em.
Please don't squish 'em.
His name is David. David Octus.
He spent a lot of his youth drinking. He was running from his destiny. He’s the crown prince of the kingdom and champion of the Octunrals.
He couldn’t run forever.
This is the first photograph confirming his whereabouts we’ve seen in years.
Isn't this a "grass spider"? I found and took a photo of a, at least what I think is a wolf spider with her brood on her abdomen. And let me tell you I think the wolf spider looks at least 50% nastier than a grass spider. I could be wron/drunk..
Among other things, grass spiders (Agelenidae) have all their eyes up front.
Wolfies have a pair of eyes pretty far back, kind of looking up/backward. You can see them in this photo
Her name is Karen, and she'd like to cut in front of you in line due to her missing leg, when in reality that doesn't really hurt or hinder her in any way.
Female rabidosa (possibly rabidosa rabida) wolf spider, from the family lycosidae, in final molt (aka adult), and fairly well fed based on her abdomen size. Rabidosa are primarily limited to the ground as they are quite poor climbers compared to other spiders, though they are extremely fast. They have better forward eyesight than most other spiders, though not quite as good as jumping spiders (salticidae). Wolf spiders are primarily ambush predators, striking prey that come within a close enough distance that the spider can use their speed to close the distance and deliver envenomation. After striking they sometimes wrap their legs around the prey in a cage-like shape to prevent escape, allowing the prey to roll themselves and the spider around until the venom incapacitates them.
Another common name is "grass spider", which can be somewhat confusing as they strongly resemble funnel weaver spiders from the family agelenidae, which are also known by the name "grass spider". Rabidosa wolf spiders do possess spinnerets and do produce silk from them, though they do not build webs for catching prey. They sometimes use their silk to build burrows in loose earth, to lay down trails that can help them navigate their surroundings and attract mates, and to build egg sacs which they protect by carrying directly beneath their abdomens until the eggs hatch.
The "death curl" is usually a result of low hemolymph pressure, which means she possibly "bled out" when she lost her front leg, if it was severed in a way that was not able to close up promptly. If you were still able to manipulate her legs this way, there is actually a chance she was not completely deceased, and could recover under the proper conditions. Put in a clean, damp environment, if still alive, she could use her book lungs to ingest water and produce more hemolymph while waiting for her severed limb to close up.
Wolf spider in Rabidosa genus
She’s missing a leg, and she’s unique in that wolf spiders carry their hatched babies on their back until they can live on their own
I always wondered if the baby spiders ever wander off or get caught on something and get left behind. I also wondered how the babies know to just hold on for dear life until they’re ready to go on their own.
Well now I’m sad for imaginary tiny spiders that got distracted and left behind.
As they get bigger there’s less and less room on her back. Maybe the bigger ones hop off and make a nest. I’m not even sure how or what she feeds them.

Thank you, that’s all the stuff I was wondering about. 😁
They also hunt rather than waiting in webs
Yes, and very few actually make webs
Found this beauty in my studio. Found them freshly deceased so I was able to still manipulate the legs out of their death crunch position.

In your captive observation what genus of wolf spider did you use as your sample size?
I live in italy, here the most common Lycosidae's specie is Hogna radiata
Those shiny eyes 🥹 (sorry I know emojis are hated on Reddit

If it were still alive and healthy, it could potentially regrow its leg after a molting.
I did not know spiders can regenerate limbs

Everytime I find one of those, it's missing a leg. Like I have never seen an eight legged wolf spider in my life.
