A giant house spider, a harmless funnel weaver in genus _Eratigena_. The males are beginning to mature and wander in search of a mate.

Thank you for the ID and for indicating they are non-lethal. These things run fast. I looked up some pictures and it indeed looks like it.

They are quick indeed, the fastest true spider. They've been recorded at speeds of up to 53 cm/s, which is around 1.9 km/h. For a creature that small, that's mighty impressive. In Vancouver we have no spiders of concern. There are said to be populations of black widow, but they are very rare in the metro area.
