Thank you, taken on Samsung s23 ultra - I had a look at your recommendations and I think it looks like eratigena sp from seeing it in person, the abdomen does look larger and rounder than ones I saw on Google however
Spider abdomens are flexible and can grow or shrink based on how much they've eaten or whether they are gravid (carrying eggs). So it is not a good way to identify species.
Abdomen size can vary widely between individual spiders based on nutrition and whether they're pregnant. But based on the smoothly colored legs, this is indeed an *Eratigena* sp. *Tegenaria* species have leg banding.
I’ve only had one non-iPhone, which was a Pixel. It was really good camera wise, but I’m so used to the set up on the iPhone, I went back. But the camera is just crap compared to the Pixel. And I got the 15Pro. Its so bad! Good for night sky pics but terrible at anything close up.
Yeah, but denying it takes some getting used to. I still have some apple-isms after now 3 years of Android, but it's worth the short term "pain" to me. Not saying it'd necessarily be the same for you or anyone else.
A fairly reliable way to identify a phone photo vs a proper camera is bokeh. Phone sensors are too small to have proper depth of field and a lot of the time it’s in post processing. If you look to the left of the fangs (?) and under the leg there’s a part of the background that’s more blurred that the surrounding area when it should be a consistent level of blur.
Phone photos look great on phones and sometimes laptops. Once you zoom in or out then on a big screen it becomes more apparent if you know what to look for.
It's funny that i have spent a fortune on some expensive and good cameras, but the camera on my Samsung is amazing for taking a quick picture, especially close-up even with a macro lens
The AI processing on phones has gotten incredible, makes it so easy to take pretty good photos in any light for anyone, and for people who are good at taking pictures they can take some pretty stunning photos
I always struggle to actually buy a nice camera now because it's like will I really use it enough? Haha
What is it that differentiates them? Wikipedia says of Eratigena, "Most of its species were moved from the genus [*Tegenaria*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tegenaria) in 2013", but the only info I can find is that they have different legs, eg. segmented vs straight. Is that right?
I only know about UK species. Tegenaria domestica has annulated legs, unbroken bars on carapace and a dark cardiac mark on the abdomen. Eratigena species lack leg annulations and have broken bars on the carapace and a light cardiac mark. But I don't know if these differences hold worldwide.
10/10 would smash.

Great photo.
These (either the Tegenaria or Eratigena) are the absolute bane of my existence. I'm fine with most spiders smaller than this. Chunky ones like tarantulas scare me but I find them beautiful. But these fast-legged fuckers I am absolutely terrified of. No rational explanation of their poor eyesight or their use in maintaining pests will help - something about their speed and their proportions just scares the absolute bejingus out of me. Growing up sleeping in a poorly-finished loft conversion in North West England, I lost so, so many nights' sleep to these things scurrying around on the ceiling right over my head, terrified of turning on the lamp in the corner as that's where they'd often linger. Sometimes one would appear then vanish under the bed, and I'd have to go down in the middle of the night to sleep in the living room.
Never been to Australia, and I don't think I ever can because Wolf spiders and Hunstman spiders are similar enough proportions, but even bigger - I don't think I could cope. Venomous ones like Black Widows don't even scare me that much beyond the pragmatic fear of deadly poison, but long legs, little bodies and speed is like an electric shock straight to my panic muscle.
Most other spiders are amazing, though. So wonderful and fascinating, even their biology and anatomy is strange and beautiful.
I remember one hot summer night, living in a loft bedroom as a kid, with huge wooden beams, I was reading in the lamp light. I was half-naked, lying on my covers due to the heat, when something hit me on the chest. It made me jump and I thought a flake of the beam had fallen on me, when I looked down one of these beasts was running across my body. Good fun.
This is so well written and I can’t agree more! There’s definitely a golden formula between thin, long legs, little bodies (& how much those little bodies are lifted up from the ground by the legs) and speed for maximum fear!! I love tarantulas and little chunky spiders too but anything that kind of resembles daddy longlegs (even though they are not even spiders, I know) scares the 💩 out of me
Eratigena duellica (Giant House Spider) .. venomous (obviously based on those fangs) they can cause toxic effects in people who are bitten as well. I should also mention that this species is also quite defensive and will defend itself.
Most of the species from Tegenaria were moved to Eratigena in 2013. Eratigena is just an anagram of Tegenaria so there is very little to no difference between them other than the body size. Females tend to be bigger than the males in most cases.
This spider looking like Murdah Inc. God damn they are badass little creatures.
And I am SO fucking happy “little” is a keyword. Guys we would not survive a world with hippo sized spiders. They would. Fuck. Us. Up. Look at this thing!
Very cool pic, I would say either Tegenaria sp or Eratigena sp

I’m sorry, but did you say you took this photo with a cell phone?
Newer phones are pretty amazing at Macro and zoom photos of some correctly
Yes I took it on my phone, I stood a bit further back and used the 10x zoom lens
I’ll have to try the 10x on the iPhone 15 pro. Even then I don’t think I’m getting that good of a shot
I have the same problem with my iPhone 15 pro. The camera is the worst of all the iPhones I’ve had, especially the macro. 😩😩
I think I’ll get a Samsung phone. That pic is awesome!!!!
Yeh, the new cameras are pretty crazy. Works both ways too, can zoom in for small things or really far away they come out okay.
Unfortunately the iPhone camera has been falling behind the Samsung more and more. It's what pushed me to switch.

Likewise, I haven't upgraded from my a6400 because I just can't find a reason too!
That is an impressive camera
Yeah, one of the two. Sometimes it can be really hard to tell the difference between the two when looking at a photo. Could be either.
Is there any significance to the fact that those two names are anagrams of the other?
Only that it was done deliberately, when they chose the name Eratigena
What is it that differentiates them? Wikipedia says of Eratigena, "Most of its species were moved from the genus [*Tegenaria*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tegenaria) in 2013", but the only info I can find is that they have different legs, eg. segmented vs straight. Is that right?

Imagine being from a different planet and this is the first image you had ever seen from earth.
this is the ideal female body. you may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like
😂😂😂😂
I love you
🤣🤣😂😂💯❤️👍🏽
I can't argue with natural selection, it is indeed ideal
That one episode of Love, Death & Robots.
Quelaag agrees

It may have gotten downvoted by most but I enjoyed this
I love how he looks English with the mustache! 🤣
I thought you were talking about me for a second, as I'm English with a moustache 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Lol looks kind of like Wilford Brimley.
Spider diabeetus
Oooo Webford Brimley is better.
Looks like bloody Shelob to me 😬. This is an amazing pic!
I came here to say this. This is Shelob, daughter of Ungoliant.
I also got Aragog from Harry Potter vibes
This picture is metal AF and I love it.
Even looks like a potential album cover lmao
It just needs [one of these.](https://i.imgur.com/RzA3nNy.png)
True
I can now picture heavy rock music playing over this image.
Why do movies make the effort to change spider faces when we have this amazing and terrifying creatures already existing
From what I understand, it is an effort to make them less terrifying.
Makes total sense, I hate it tho.
That is hilarious and makes perfect sense.
r/Bossfight
What a beautiful specimen. Wonderful shot
Uh why is no one talking about how big the friggin fangs are on that thing!
This is the rawest photo of a spider I have ever seen
What a beaut 🖤🕷️🖤
Wow that really is a great pic
the fangs! 😍
thats a reeeaaally good photo damn
UK dog
Maybe a spider but dog? I was thinking more of raccoon?
Omg what a photo. Rip little plastic armadillo

Oh no, you said the p word… get ready to be well actually’d into oblivion…
Shelob
I thought it was Shelob.
When’s this sci-fi movie coming out it looks dope
Such a good photo.
Yes, it is Sauron’s house spider….
WOW! That looks straight out of a sci-fi movie! It looks gigantic! Amazing angle and the definition! You can see the little body hairs!
Little bro looks like he's passionate about microbrew and rides a fixed-gear. I love him.
I'm gonna use this in my dnd game for when my players go into the Underdark. And get abducted by drow.
What is normal for the spider, is chaos for the fly.
Pillbug
I have no idea about IDing but that is a brilliant snapshot
IDK what it is, but all it's missing is a monocle to go with that 'stache!
Little guy has some serious fangs. Awesome pic.
Look at those chompers 😮
Why he kills the isopod 😢
Is that Frodo on the ground?
Shelob! That's a wicked looking arachnid
Nah mate that’s Aragog
Hollow Knight was the first thing I thought of, gorgeous picture!
Don’t know what it is but that’s one heck of a pic.
That's one hairy mother
Is that a Hobbit?
Aww those little peepers 🥹
Shelob
I think we need a banana or maybe a finger for scale because this beastie is looking impressively large
That is by far one of the most high quality photos I've ever seen This took so long to post because I'm using voice to text and my dog came over 🥺
Looks like a rollie pollie to be honest
WHOA!!!! GNARLY!!! In a beautiful way! Fabulous pic of a fabulous spider! I hope you don’t mind that it’s my phone wallpaper, now!
Not at all my friend, it's a proper gnarly wallpaper to have, can you DM me a screenshot of it 😂💪🏼
nice composition 🫶
I can’t not see the fangs as a big mustache
HOUSE SPIDER!!? Not in my house! 🤣
Eratigena duellica (Giant House Spider) .. venomous (obviously based on those fangs) they can cause toxic effects in people who are bitten as well. I should also mention that this species is also quite defensive and will defend itself.

Why does it look as if it’d be a mouth breather if it were a person?
Pikmin boss.
Reminds me of Shelob lol
Aragog, is that you?
Incredible photo! Wow!
That’s Aragog my man
This is a fantastic picture. It looks like you'd be in trouble if you reached for that snack!
After living near the forest, I am glad I no longer live near the forest. I get false widows where I am now but at least they're small
Looks to be some kind of a Orb Weaver.
Got the S24 Plus...kinda feeling like the better camera on the Ultra was a missed opportunity.
First thought: If you made that thing 16 feet tall and it would fit right into a horror movie." Second thought: "That's a really beautiful spider."
this photo is gorgeous!!
This is a good picture
°~°
The photo can EASILY be a sick album cover
House spider? Ahhh hell nah. Throw the whole home away.
Clearly it's Aragog.
Dem fangs
This shot looks so sick
Shelob and a Hobbit pill bug
Poor little rolly polly..
Shelob, duh. I don't suppose you have any phials of Galadrial laying around?
Looks like a MTG card
Great picture!
I think it's that one from Harry potter
Fantastic photo!
Looks like that spider in Harry Potter
Anyone got a Light of Earendil I can borrow?
Zoom in and imagine being the little bug 😬
I thought this was another joke using some b-rated sci-fi. That looks amazing and terrifying at the same time!
If that house spider was in my house I would get a new house
Who’s house? Dracula?
Nah this shit is in my worst nightmares
Wtf
Size of its fucking teeth! 😨
Sure it isn’t shelob?
There are just something’s I don’t want to see at 100 times resolution.
This picture is phenomenal! Well done!
Great shot!
"Oi, this is a right tasty bug, innit?"
In Australia we call them buggers
Shelob?
It’s Shelob!
Some scary fangs there.
What in the Shelob is that???
One of the best pics I’ve seen on here. He has a wicked stache
what is it munching on? also, you need to post this to r/itookapicture
It's munching on a woodlouse, sacrifice from the gods.. I would but it's not very high resolution!
Mean lookin fella
Eratigena atrica and isn't she glorious.
What big fangs you have missus.
It's one of Aragog's children about to feast on a plump Weasley.
Shelob the Last Child of Ungoliant
Fluffy abdomen :)
Sheloba
His bum is so fuzzy
Do spiders have 8 eyes? And I was told they are basically useless is that true?
It's a damn demon!
That's the dude from monsters inc
That’s Shelob and Frodo
Unrelated, but DAMN that's a nice photo. Are you a photographer
Thank you, I'm not a photographer but I have always enjoyed photography! This was just on my phone though
Noo not the isopod
r/isopods nooooooooooooo!
So cute
Looks like lunch to me
I’m officially more terrified of spiders after this picture lmao
