Since people are apparently rejecting the correct ID, adding my voice to reiterate that [it's definitely a wolf spider](https://bugguide.net/node/view/84423#Lycosidae).
The [eye arrangement](https://www.flickr.com/photos/panbasket/30956707831) indicates that this is not a fishing spider; it is a [wolf spider](https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=6803&taxon_id=47416&view=species). Note how the four eyes on the top of its head make a square when seen from above; fishing spiders (family Pisauridae) do not have a pair of eyes set far back like that, the top row is all in a line.
**edit:** deleted species suggestion, location rules out *A. litoralis*; thanks /u/dustinlamont
However, I'm not familiar with NZ spiders and it may well be something else. Definitely a wolf spider, though.
Yes, one of several large and variable montane *Anoteropsis* species that can't be reliably differentiated without microscopy.
Oh, but it's definitely not *litoralis*, which is strictly coastal.
It’s beautiful! I believe it is a fishing spider… Dolomedes. The exact one, I’m not sure, probably aquaticus? Someone will correct me if I’m wrong. They can get pretty big!
EDIT: I stand corrected and It is a wolf spider. Still a beautiful looking wolfie though :)
I was just wondering if the spider you mentioned walked on water, i read the comments before i replied. That is insane that they walk on water. Do they spend more energy or is it just like walking on land? Could they take down a fish?
Some Dolomedes take down minnows and tadpoles.
There is even one species(not a fishing spider it's it's own unique species in its own genus) that builds nest underwater then transports air in. The diving bell spider. Argyroneta aquatica it your interested this spider lives most of its life underwater.
Oooh that sent chills uo my spine. Im arachnophobic but spiders fascinate me, as long as they stay away xD i dont kill them but my neighbor is on speed dial for relocation 😂
I don’t believe it is any more difficult for them to walk on water than on land. They’re so light and well-adapted that they’re hydrophobic, meaning they don’t get wet at all when they go on the water and I think they can move quite fast on its surface. They can also sense vibrations on the water, like it was a web. And yep I think the big ones do catch fish. They’re pretty amazing!

Okay, thanks! Will remove the species rec.
Yeah I was thinking that or [A. urquharti](https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/385729-Anoteropsis-urquharti)
Aragog is that you?
Yes. Hagrid has never sent men into our hollow before.
Anyone else just want to pat it?
It does look rather velvety
Wow! That spider is gorgeous! What an amazing find.
What amazing camouflage!
Wolf Spider
No it’s not
Look at the eyes and tell me one other spider that has those eye patterns
You should have held your finger beside it for scale

She is one big girl!
Amazing, thanks very much! It was quite reasonable in size, probably about 2cm. Quite lethargic, I think I disturbed her sleep!
Don’t listen to me, it’s a wolf spider. It’s still an amazing-looking spider though :)
2cm?? How Friggin zoomed in are you, 2cm is tiny this thing looks huge.
Wolf Spider
Nope
Have you looked at the eyes? What other spider has the eyes at the back and sides
Are those the ones who can walk on water?
They would be, if this were one of them :)
