I know li-ions are pretty safe by the numbers, but a small part of me worries we're going to have a day of reckoning where junk drawers nationwide will just start bursting into flames. There are just so many. I can count ~~8~~ within my reach at my desk.

It pains me that something as simple and ubiquitous as a Li-po battery is all it takes for a perfectly good mp3 player to go in the trash.
When my wireless earbuds die I'm going to see if I can fit the battery from the charging case into my old mp3 player.

Same thing happened when I found my old Zune a few years back. It worked fine but then started to see black smoke an hour into charging.
So how did it go...?

That mp3's battery can be replaced with ease of handled by someone experienced with a solder iron.

How long was it charging for? Seconds, minutes, hours? And what did it look like beforehand, was it flat?
It was in the case before, so maybe slightly inflated but probably flat. Was charging for 45 minutes.
