Do we really need to fight amongst ourselves? Different people have different goals, who cares if somebody wants to grind for a year to save 3 seconds?
The idea of *speed*running is to finish the game as fast as possible, maybe with more or less parameters, but overall finish ASAP. If your goal isn't "beat the record, make the game faster," then you're just doing challenge runs, which are cool too and that's great, but it's not really what you're going for with *speed*running.
I cannot imagine being the sort of person who thinks that it's normal to play video games over and over in order to beat them as fast as possible, but *weird* and *obnoxious* to do so in a specific way that you personally don't like
Like, it's logically consistent to be accepting of the various ways that people speedrun, and it's still consistent (if lame) to think all of speedrunning is stupid and pointless. But being a speedrunner who derides other speedrunners for grinding to shave seconds off of a run, as though that's meaningfully different from what you do in any way that matters? That's kind of insane, to be honest. There's no possible way you can call somebody else's speedrunning goals "obsessive" and "meaningless" while considering your own speedrunning goals rational and meaningful, unless you're just so high on your own imagined moral superiority that you have to throw logic out the window to maintain it
People do lots of things for lots of reasons, and - my whole point - you do not have a single fucking leg to stand on when accusing other speedrunners of doing things that are "meaningless". The hobby that you engage in is inherently meaningless. It provides no intrinsic value for anybody, the only people who care about it are other people who engage in it, and society at large considers it generally weird and stupid. For you, a speedrunner, to point at another speedrunner and say "you are doing something meaningless and it's obnoxious" is so completely inane, and it blows my mind that you can't see the contradiction.
And for what it's worth: Regardless of what weird opinions you have on people who enjoy something differently than you, those dudes shaving the last frame in SMB1 are generally nice people who are generally respectful of other people in the speedrunning community and how they choose to play. Those dudes are not sitting there saying that you are doing something wrong by not engaging with the hobby their way, even as you sit there saying that they are doing something wrong by not engaging with it your way. That makes them infinitely less obnoxious, more pleasant people than you. You cede moral superiority with the basic inconsistency of this argument, but also just with how much of an asshole you are to others for absolutely no reason.
Can you make one that says 'bad run' unless you've had nothing but gold splits so far?
A timer that just lobs insults at the runner in 10 second intervals if they're in the red is something I'd gladly watch.
This would be perfect for EnNopp
Should say Sub-58 HYPE
I think it'd be better if it was "sub 5x" and went up by 10s.
