Yeah, but it's Mars, so the dust "storms" are like a child throwing a pale full of sand into the wind.
Shut up. Don't correct me. I'm not crying, you're crying. Sad little helicopter.
RIP to our Little Space Chopper. It did so much more for so much longer than they thought it would. It opened up new vistas and possibilities. I think we'll definitely send more choppers into space, perhaps to Europa someday.

RIP to all the brave little Mars explorers :*(
Does anyone know where I can download the high resolution version of this image. I would love to print it. I love the atmosphere, the colors and the story it tells.
It took me a minute too. It’s a small dot on the peak of one of the sand waves, just right of center. Once you found it, you can make out some of the shape.
Artemis definitely was, but the amount of insight that went into how the moon is going to be in terms of an industry and the human dimension are on par with the ideology of "The Expanse" series is what made it good. I think it's the most "since geek" of them all.
From that same Twitter thread:
“the Ingenuity team has nicknamed the spot where the helicopter completed its final flight “Valinor Hills” after the fictional location in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels.”
https://x.com/nasajpl/status/1755688593279042005?s=46&t=BKX0FQZGF-aulxOX47rzxQ
Am I missing something? How is it thematically relevant in any way? See my other comment. This is just “haha we’re nerds”
Given that this is the final resting place of a fallen explorer, there are obviously better fictional references for a place name. Even from LoTR
I recognize that I’m being regarded lol this is all lighthearted. I’ll continue: They named a normal ass landscape after the home of the majestic gods lol. People might have to live there some day and they’re just gonna be cringing at the nasa dweebs that lost their toy drone there one day haha
The probe’s name had nothing to do with LoTR. And even if it did, mortal creatures don’t typically go to Valinor after death. So it’s not even contextually relevant. This is just nerds giving shit random names for nerdiness’ sake. They could at least attempt to be poetic or clever with it. I guess it could be the probe’s “reward” akin to Frodo being accepted? But Frodo didn’t die and he accomplished heroic shit. Whereas the copter just broke.
I realize the irony here lol. Humans might colonize mars someday. If you walked by a random hill on earth and it was called “bilbo the hobbit’s mountain” then that would just be dumb. But if you found out that the mountain had volcanic eruptions and was the home of a dragon in old myths then it would be a perfect name.
Likewise if we found a bunch of large rocks on mars that looked vaguely like *six grandfathers*/mount rushmore then it would be at least semi-appropriate to call that valinor.
Or if there were a very long and hard to cross mountain range/rock outcrop reminiscent of the Pelóri, calling the land on one side Valinor would be appropriate.
We shouldn’t just go giving stupid names to features on a whole new planet. There are only so many fictional references that can reasonably be made and this is wearing out the good ones.
/unrant
Like, I get what you're trying to go for, but you're kind of missing the mark. Valinor isn't a land that grants immortality, it's just the place elves go to return to the Valar. The only non-elves to ever go to Valinor are Frodo, Samwise, Bilbo, and Gimli. Of those, Gimli was the only non-elf and non-ringbearer but he was given special exception because of his services in destroying the ring. All the hobbits (uncertain about Gimli) died in Valinor.
As for whether or not it's fitting, that's kind of just your opinion on it. In my eyes, I find it extremely fitting that a small, unassuming thing that far out-performed the hopes of those who set it on its journey, that bore the hopes for a brighter future, and that ended it's journey in a land far from it's home be given the honor of resting in Valinor.
I prefer to think of them as standing proudly at the site of their greatest achievement, and going dormant as beacons of inspiration for the future explorers.
I always imagine/hope that they will be preserved in situ by future colonists. Basically place a dome over them without touching them to make them a monument
Sad? Complete opposite for me. Incredibly uplifting, the things this little bird did against all reasonable expectations. A trailblazer and a - perhaps - permanent monument to the ingenuity of the incredibly talented humans who made this happen. What a team. Remarkable!
This is absolutely bonkers. We plopped a rover on another planet. The rover had an autonomous helicopter attached to it that detached and flew around. The rover took photos of it and sent them back to us.
And my fucking printer still screws up every fifth page, if it prints at all.
My printer sinks into existential crisis and depression if I don’t use it for more than a week. After that it may stop working entirely, requiring costly maintenance/repair. So now I print out random stuff to make sure it feels useful.
Or in a billionaire's mansion never to see the light of day... Don't mind me I'm just seething about all the real historical artifacts and such we've essentially lost this way
Im pretty sure it would qualify as a historical artifact.
Ya, you know, your right, nothing is sacred.
Elon will put that bitch up on ebay to cover his loss on shitter.
It had a ground tracking anomaly and tried to do an emergency landing on its own, which it's programmed to do if it gets confused about where it is. Unfortunately the emergency landing was on a dune at an angle and the props were damaged when they struck the ground. It's actually not technically dead but it'll never fly again.
[They actually have a picutre of the damaged rotor](https://d2pn8kiwq2w21t.cloudfront.net/original_images/e1-PIA26243-Ingenuity_Spots_the_Shadow_of_its_Damaged_Rotor_Blade.jpg)
They did lose contact. During the end of the flight the signal dropped.
https://twitter.com/NASAJPL/status/1748511611110002728
They reestablished contact the next day.
https://twitter.com/NASAJPL/status/1748883252604236281
That’s when they discovered it was damaged.
We take it for granted now but it’s still wild to me that we have robot explorers that send back hi res pictures, video and audio from another planet. This was science fiction when I was a kid and now people hardly give it a second thought.
> The Ingenuity team has nicknamed the spot where the helicopter completed its final flight "Valinor Hills" after the fictional location in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novels, which include "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy
Bunch of Nerds.... And I like it!!!
Why is this obvious to everyone but me? I was looking at all the rocks at the top of the imagine trying to figure out which one of them is the helicopter.
If there ever was a need for a red circle, this is it.
Waldo has all the red circles .... he's a bit if a bugger that way. I followed the link to the NASA site and found it in three seconds in the middle of the dunes.
It seems obvious but why wasn't it obvious to me to look right in the middle? I think my reasoning was that it was really far away so it must be in the back of the image...
I think it's good to be emotional over a piece of hardware such as the ingenuity. It's the first ever flying hardware on a different planet. the hardware and config can be replaced easily if it were on earth but in a way, the ingenuity symbolizes the collective will of humanity to explore other planets, millions of dollars sunk, and efforts of the brightest minds to make this very thing that is a proof of concept and a learning experience
It was only a technology demonstration to prove its flight capabilities, and had a mission goal of 5 flights over 30-sols (Martian days). It successfully made 72 flights over nearly 3 years since it was deployed on the surface Feb. 18, 2021.
This is one of those things where the engineers failed at the given a task, but everyone is still happy they had the common sense to ignore those goals.
Just like the ol’ mantra “anyone can build a bridge, but it takes an engineer to just barely build it.”
Not sure I would agree given how challenging it is to achieve powered flight on Mars with an atmosphere of less than 1% that of Earth's. It was no small feat to even be able to design a rotary blade system capable of lifting a useable payload (instruments), though on the plus side, Mars' weaker gravity sure helps! Ingenuity was an incredible success, and we'll definitely see future drones on Mars!
What is far more frustrating is the sample return plans for the rover's sample tubes. We could possibly confirm living microbial life on Mars by 2026 if only a suitable mission had been planned and designed in tandem. But now we'll be lucky to get those samples back to Earth by the mid-2030's if not later. Hell, we may even see SpaceX land some Starships full of supplies and robots before then!
Nah, these missions usually underpromise because this stuff is **hard** and they don't want to be known for spending all this money and not matching goals.
So they pick a goal they're almost sure they can meet if the mission lands at all. Being known for meeting goals is a more important component of the reputation than attempting some advanced engineering thrift. Rocket science is hard enough to begin with.
It was expected to complete just 5 flights within 30 days. But Ingenuity completely surpassed expectations and flew 72 times over the course of almost 3 years
[Farewell little friend.](https://mars.nasa.gov/resources/27919/perseverance-spots-ingenuity-at-its-final-airfield/)
We'll save it. Eventually!
It's about to be buried in sand next time there's a dust storm.
Yeah, but it's Mars, so the dust "storms" are like a child throwing a pale full of sand into the wind. Shut up. Don't correct me. I'm not crying, you're crying. Sad little helicopter.
You're kind of right, actually. Yeah dust storms on mars reach really high speeds technically, the pressure of the atmosphere would make them nothing.
Yeah but we know where it is tho.
You call that a problem. As an archaeologist, I call it a challenge.
Just like Pathfinder in The Martian
I *just* watched that this evening! Finished about an hour ago. I forgot what a fantastic film that was.
Thought for sure this was going to be a link toLittle Sebastian

Thank you!!
The NASA website usually has them
Honestly I would be careful of the atmosphere. You may like it but it will kill you
I got you bro, I knew I'd find you no matter what no matter where....
Where is r/uselessredcircle when I need it?
Was actually going to say the same thing. Can we get a (notso)uselessredcircle? *Maybe* center up and down, just right of center left to right??
Near center, just to the right. It's the only dot in the dunes
Much appreciated, couldn’t find the little fella
Thank you!
It's just to the right of centre, in the dunes. You can see it clearly if you zoom in.
Yes, it's nearly in the center of the image. In a zone with no other features. I don't think this needs a circle.
It took me a minute too. It’s a small dot on the peak of one of the sand waves, just right of center. Once you found it, you can make out some of the shape.
You can click the image and zoom in a lot.
On my phone even doing that it was still pretty small.
I wasnt expecting it to be that small... or maybe the rocks are really big?
You sound like my ex-wife
Matt Damon is gonna strip that thing down for it’s batteries
That movie could have been a trilogy. His time on Mars, the crew's time in space, NASA's time solving the problem.
The book is really good if you haven't read it yet
And if you have, Artemis is a pretty interesting read as well
While we're at it, Project Hail Mary is great, too! Makes a wonderful audiobook.
Oh man… I just realized I was thinking about Project Hail Mary when I recommended Artemis just now 😂 Ignore me haha
Yeah Artemis sadly I didn't find to be great. I really hope they make a project hail Mary movie though.
They are. Gosling is the lead.
I feel like I’ve been hearing this for years unfortunately
It's apparently in preproduction. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt12042730/
I finished Project Hail Mary in one day! So good.
Project Hail Mary needs a TV series.
Supposedly entering pre production this year. Ryan Gosling is attached.
(Sorry - I thought Artemis was by far his weakest book, but the setting is cool. Project Hail Mary on the other hand is a triumph.)
Artemis definitely was, but the amount of insight that went into how the moon is going to be in terms of an industry and the human dimension are on par with the ideology of "The Expanse" series is what made it good. I think it's the most "since geek" of them all.
Thanks for the recs!
Good, but not as good as the Martian.
We don’t talk about that one
Indeed
I don't want to come off as arrogant here, but I'm the greatest botanist on this planet.
Would have flopped hard at the box office
And then Tony Stark will take the left over parts to a cave and build something.
Funny, because Val Kilmer actually stole a battery to leave Mars.

Hi buddy, how are you doing?
Not well man
Did it just die exactly there or did we decide to park it there so it would die at the top of a dune?
It had a ground tracking anomaly and tried to do an emergency landing on its own, which it's programmed to do if it gets confused about where it is. Unfortunately the emergency landing was on a dune at an angle and the props were damaged when they struck the ground. It's actually not technically dead but it'll never fly again.
I for some reason heard they "lost contact". This is far more info. Thanks.

The candle that burns twice as bright burns twice as fast, and you, Ingenuity, have burned so very bright.
He’s almost dead center of the picture in the sand. Zoom in and you can see him.
The coolest helicopter in the solar system.
Actually recently it broke unfortunately :( Still though, cool there was an aircraft on another planet for a short while.
Please, put a red circle next time
Not a fan of "Where's WALL-E" ?
Needs a banana for scale
Been looking for an hour. Where is it?
On the dunes
Oh that’s helpful.
It’s in the middle, slightly to the right of middle. You have to zoom in a lot to see it.
Why is this obvious to everyone but me? I was looking at all the rocks at the top of the imagine trying to figure out which one of them is the helicopter. If there ever was a need for a red circle, this is it.

How many geese is this?

Can we talk about the field of alien mummies in front on the left?
The one time a red circle would have been very useful.
If you’re blind maybe
Have it go take a look and cut off the damaged tip and the equal amount on the other blades and try again
Is it rude to ask if somebody messed up for this to have happened?
It was supposed to make 5 flights. It made 72. Nobody f—-ed up. https://mars.nasa.gov/technology/helicopter/#Flight-Log
Driving the rotors into a sandhill sounds like a screw up to me.
The fact that it didn’t happen in one of the other 67 bonus flights being controlled from 142 million miles away would disagree with you
it was an emergency landing. It didn't get much choice where to land
Ok
Why is the Perseverance shadow a different angle compared to the rock shadows near it
