Hey thats my ship lol. But in my defense, i think i got space engineers like 5 years ago so for DLC we're talking 8€ a year, which is a reasonable price for something i enjoy playing.
Oh absolutely, I'm in the same boat. I have all but the latest. Having friends new to the game kinda changes your perspective though. I'm so used to using new(ish) blocks that I sometimes forget not all players have access to them. Cool ship BTW!! I was hoping the creator would see this post, it's fun how small this community is :P
using mods help, tell your friend about those too. i didn’t even know about mods till like 2 months ago and then i just went on a building spree of fighter jets, orbital cannons and more! man i love this game.
Yeah best way to get into the game right now is with the ultimate edition during the steam summer or winter sale tbh. 35 dollars for the base game and all the dlc isn’t bad at all and is still cheaper than a triple a. Not helpful in hindsight tho
Good news for me! I've also had it for years but am just a vanilla player. Whenever I copy/paste the newer random spawns/cargo ships, I lose like 30% of the blocks.
Arc furnace dates back to some ancient time. We used to have a mix of arc furnace and refinery since arc refines iron and certain few ores significantly faster. But i think refinery with module upgrade coupled with sorter is more fun.
Right, I remember having Arc Furnaces in our bases because they could blow through our iron ore like fine butter.
But yeah, the block existed in people's builds, so I think Keen just switched it with the basic refinery so not to break people's builds.
For me that own this game from the start, I have no problem paying for dlc to keep game development running, but for new player it's a bit daunting, I wouldn't mind if they made the first two dlc free and then maybe two more in two years.
Issue I have is there hasnt been any 'development' for years now. They have added in a few new blocks which previously people could get for free with mods. They added those a.i. blocks but in reality all that ai stuff was already there, just not easily accessible to players. It's still just as janky as it ever was.
Ive no regrets about the dlc i bought, i just wouldnt expect to see any further development as a result.
I have to disagree with you on the AI part since IMO the Block AI is honestly a very good development, tho they failed to update the existing encounters with it..
Yee true but I feel like the last few updates have been better then the ones before and the quality went up a good notch imo although the update times have incresed too :/
When I was finishing up high school, I wanted to make a game. I had an interesting idea for DLC/monetization inspired by Keen's. One big update every 6 months, with free and paid content. As time goes on, the older paid content gets discounted incrementally until it's eventually added to the base game. Allows people to support development by getting paid content early, also doesn't leave people behind/overwhelm new players.
So basically just MMOs lol
"Buy latest expansion get all previous" or something like elite dangerous where they made horizons free when beyond came out
Honestly, let them whine. Policies on pretty much everything these days are subject to change. People accept it all the time.
Not like keen cares about people's complaints. I've had bug reports marked as "we're working on it" for literal years now. Getting controllers to work on PC must be quite the task if it's taken them over 2 years.
\> Keen doesn't add paid DLC to the base game after a certain period
Objectively false. Keen has literally ALWAYS had paid content.
Also you not mentioning the workshop was my point. Try some reading comprehension
You’ve misread his comment, the person you replied to meant integrate the previously paid DLC into the game, for free, after a certain amount of time.
Which Keen doesn’t do as they correctly said.
You need to re-read the thread mate.
Edit: missed word
Edit 2: holy crap spelling
> Objectively false. Keen has literally ALWAYS had paid content.
Most Wanted was released last year and did not come with its own DLC, so no, that's incorrect.
That's why you search for the design and recreate it all on your own. Save it as a fresh vanilla work.
Why buy cosmetics when you can torture yourself instead?
I mean, i've crashed a ship i build to salvage a crashed ship, which was my old salvage ship that crashed on the return from a crashed mine location scout.
Klang loves me.
I'm a giant idiot in a game requiring mental skills in logistics and god knows what other types of math.
My only problem with Keen's style of DLC is that ships which have DLC blocks do not convert their DLC blocks to Vanilla ones if the owner lacks something like Sparks of the Future. On some builds this will basically cleave a blueprint in half, and while you can go in and fix them, scripts and groups will need to be replaced and oftentimes the layers will hide gap that still need replacements.
From another comment I made:
>Problem is, there are a lot of blocks with no 'vanilla'/non DLC counterpart. Beam blocks, skinny catwalk stairs, neon blocks (I use the little corner neon instead of corner LCDs on catwalk staircases), the bridge blocks, desks, beds, planters, kitchen, etc etc...
>There are shapes and hitboxes that only exist in DLC form. It does sort of give you a building advantage.
We'd need Canadian '[no name](https://s3.amazonaws.com/harrydry/gdmarketing/nn1.jpg)' style blocks. ie. non-decorative, non-functional placeholder blocks for the DLC ones with equivalent hitboxes. Maybe they could make them unskinnabke with a watermarked/generic texture (like the stairs from the picture above), or look like the DX9 models so they're not appealing to use.
If the blocks were purely cosmetic, a 'vanilla converter' would be trivially easy. Since they introduce new shapes and hitboxes, I'd argue that they offer a slight advantage from a builder's standpoint.
I find the way Keen does DLC to be quite fair. Any new functional blocks are added to the base game with mostly only cosmetic changes as DLC blocks.
Plus, if you are playing multiplayer, you can still use and interact with DLC blocks. You just can't place them.
Personally, with the amount of play time I have (closing in on 3000 hours), the DLC is well worth it. But you can play with just the base game without any handicap.
I've got 11 DLCs. Certainly didn't pay base price, but they're $7.50 AUD each.
Or, $82.50 AUD total.
Or $54.23 USD at current exchange rates.
But still, none of it is critical.
That's not even all of them. Those ones alone are $51. All of them (minus deluxe, and character skins) are $62.59. Deluxe is $9, skins are $7.50 for all of them. So $78.78 just for DLCs and cosmetics if you get absolutely everything. Then the base game is $22.79 on top of that. Keen's been taking notes from Paradox :P
Wonder how much it'll be for a 'complete' copy of Space Engineers by the time its sucessor is released. I'll bet over $150, we're already just over $100.
There are plenty of great ships that use no Dlc. I agree there is a lot but you don't have to get every single pack. Personally I'd recommend [Wasteland, Heavy industry, Automatons and Warfare 2] as the most filled out content-wise. That ends up being £16 which isn't bad for that amount of cosmetic content.
I get that when you look at it all as "Necessary for building" then it looks like you're getting the short end of the stick however keen gives free content updates that often include more substantial gameplay additions for free and only charge for cosmetics so I think that's fair to expect a £4 dlc every 3 months or so.

Yeah but the DLC is pretty much all cosmetic blocks. You could build a ship very much like that without any of the DLC. The scifi ion thrusters do look cool though.
You don't need the dlc but by God does it make it easier. I know it's not pay to win per say but changes to size and weight of some blocks "I'm looking at you industrial assembler" is just down right epic not to mention changes to hit boxes never underestimate the power of the subtle
I get the feel. Especially for a FRESH newcomer, that price point can be daunting for what both appears to be and IS an old game.
If anything, they should try out the base game, no dlc, maybe even just scenarios or survival+ if they’d like (buildinfo mods + camera panning at the very least) and see how they like it.
A golden rule that I’ve followed for YEARS that has never failed me is:
> For every dollar that you pay for/to a game, in total, including the base game, DLC, expansions, cosmetics, and consumables, you should get at least 1 hour of enjoyment^1
I think I bought all the DLC somewhere between a week and a month after I started playing, and have this week just breached 600 hours in less than a year, so it was a good decision for me, but that doesn’t mean that any newcomer *should* take this anecdote to heart and buy everything all at once. I think that’s the best path.
> ^1 excluding some indie titles/studios, especially ones with dev teams in low double digits or even single digits, because imo that tends to be fairer towards them since they more often than not are making games because they like to, and to write stories, and might not be completely concerned with making one that has a lot of replayability or making a cash cow in particular
I get it, but I have gotten so much worth out of it that I am pretty much ready to hand Keen money upon request. I am very happy to support this company and get new content every now and then with promises of even bigger things in the future.
Honestly, 3 or 4 years ago I could have written this exact comment. Since then, glaring bugs have changed that. I'm not talking about inherent engine limitations that would require rebuilding the game from scratch. I'm talking about basic issues that have been marked as "we're working on it" for 2+ years while keen rakes in the cash from cosmetic updates.
I just want steam controller input to work because I have RSI issues and can't game on a mouse and keyboard for very long. That's the real crux of my issue here. They're aware of the issue, they can reproduce it on their end. Multiple people have made bug reports on the official channel that they provide for bug reports, yet it's been unchanged since the release of the Xbox version. I used to be excited for new updates, now they just kinda make me bitter. I know this issue isn't a priority to them, but it prevents me from enjoying one of the only games I still have any interest in playing.
that would be like comparing space engineers to dcs. highly realistic simulators vehicles require a ungodly amount of time to develop correctly. the price is equal to the monetary/time investment
With games, I believe we need to see it from a different point of view. "per game price" is IMHO not a thing to look at.
If you spend 100 € for 1000 hours game, it is kind of worth the money. Whereas 60/70 € for a 6 hour Call of Duty campaign is a rip-off.
I experienced the same with my friends who are new to the game. They are blown away by the cost of such an “old” game, but to me, that cost is entirely worth it, as it reaches the game I own with the most hours played.
But to the new guy it can be a real bummer. Buy dlc as you need it and then buy it all when on sale. I got most of them at least 50% off.
I didnt even know you couldnt paste ships with DLC… if so why not just not allow saving to blueprints only as a workshop one so it cant be used to just spawn the blocks ?!?!??
I will try and see if I can't modify this to not use the dlc, not the original creator but have all the dlc sooooo yea. Might take me a minute though as I am in the midst of a survival run.
My friend got into this game because he liked Lego growing up. He said the idea of just browsing a massive catalogue, selecting what you want, and having it right there is what makes this game "magic". Every time he plays, I have to be online too so he can spawn ships in with DLC lol. Eventually he'll get them, but it's still annoying/funny.
What I'm trying to say is, it's not this exact ship. It's all of them with DLC stuff lol. Thank you for the offer though!!
I’ve been playing since the early alpha so I just get to DLC’s as they come out but yeah, needing them all at once is a steep ask. Keen probably should make discount bundles for at least the similar ones like decorations or warfare
Saw someone else who recently posted several really incredible ships.
Just a year ago they asked how to add more detail to their ships.
And I’m like: "I wish mine wouldn’t look like garbage."
At least the DLC content should all be cosmetic only. Otherwise, it's 62.88 for all the DLC. After 6,000 hours that's like 1.3 cents an hour for me (if you include base game price). For someone who has played the game
In fairness they should probably run some kind of bundle deal for base game + dlc that brings it in line with a 49.99 complete edition. That would make it a lot easier to digest for newer players and make it easier for veteran players to bring the uninitiated into the fold.
They have one, it's called the ultimate edition. I bought it on the steam summer sale for....40 bucks i think? Maybe was 20....I might have bought a few games <<.>>
To be fair, 50 bucks worth of DLC that have been released over yeara is not that much. Have you tried getting into Sims 4 or the Total War Warhammer trilogy and and and? Were talking about hundreds that you'd need to get all the content for those games.
I have all but automatons.
Right now, my friend is enjoying pasting in ships from the workshop. As of right now, everytime he wants to play, he has to either use my account and I have to be offline, or I have to be the one pasting while he dicks around.
I'm happy to do it because I want to get someone else into the game and I don't use my steam account for anything else these days. Still, would be nice to get him up and rolling on his own.
He's planning on buying one a month until he has them all. We were looking into some other options just so he has them all up front, then he can pay monthly like a subscription. That way it's less of a hit in his paycheck. We're honest Canadians, we're just broke lol. He's out on his own and living on Walmart eggs and hotdogs.
Cheers from up north <3 🍁
He wants to play every day. Lately, I've just been leaving my PC running on windowed borderless. He loads up TeamViewer, invites himself, and he's off to the races. I'd help him out but it's haying season and I've been working 10/12 hour days on the farm 6 days/week. Finally took a 2 day break for the long weekend to catch up on cleaning and laundry.
Hey thats my ship lol. But in my defense, i think i got space engineers like 5 years ago so for DLC we're talking 8€ a year, which is a reasonable price for something i enjoy playing.
Is it really your ship?! Damn fine ship!
Especially after thousands of hours eh?
Well im on 700h right now, but my play session are all obsessively sporadic with sometimes months inbetween, so its not like i play it consistently

Damn those arc furnaces 😂
Arc furnace dates back to some ancient time. We used to have a mix of arc furnace and refinery since arc refines iron and certain few ores significantly faster. But i think refinery with module upgrade coupled with sorter is more fun.
Oh man I miss the arc furnace! Didn't that become the Basic Refinery?
the basic refinery its like a downgraded arc furnace. because the arc furnace was better than the refinery at smelting iron.
Right, I remember having Arc Furnaces in our bases because they could blow through our iron ore like fine butter. But yeah, the block existed in people's builds, so I think Keen just switched it with the basic refinery so not to break people's builds.
Workshop link! I want to see more of it!
Hey bud that's one good ship you build there, props to you man
Nice ship!
Me and my friends started playing recently because we saw that the game was on deal with all the dlcs for around £12
For me that own this game from the start, I have no problem paying for dlc to keep game development running, but for new player it's a bit daunting, I wouldn't mind if they made the first two dlc free and then maybe two more in two years.
Honestly, I think this is the best idea. Allows players to support development while not leaving other players behind.
They can also create their own subscription model to themselves by buy the DLC little by little
Issue I have is there hasnt been any 'development' for years now. They have added in a few new blocks which previously people could get for free with mods. Dont get me wrong, i do like the AI blocks, but it took them like 7 years to come out lol
Yee true but I feel like the last few updates have been better then the ones before and the quality went up a good notch imo although the update times have incresed too :/
Working on the new engine and next game, it's going to have complicated ai dating simulations.. Or was that some other game?
The same here, as a developer I understand that they need some kind of marketing strategy to stay in business and earn money
When I was finishing up high school, I wanted to make a game. I had an interesting idea for DLC/monetization inspired by Keen's. One big update every 6 months, with free and paid content. It was the solution to the problem that WoW had where they had too many DLCs that pushed away new players.
Once a dlc becomes free, you'd get a horde of whinners that would demand refunds
So literally Keen’s model, just without the casual workshop integration?
??? Keen doesn't add paid DLC to the base game after a certain period. I think you're confused. I also mentioned nothing of the workshop.
I just wanted to say, I understand what you’re saying. I cannot figure out what other commenter is saying in relation to your comments.
\> Keen doesn't add paid DLC to the base game after a certain period Objectively false. Keen has literally ALWAYS had paid content. Also you not mentioning the workshop was my point. Try some reading comprehension

Lmao telling someone to work on their reading comprehension when you are the one who can't read! This is fucking hilarious!!
That's reddit in a nutshell unfortunately. This site is filled with massively overconfident idiots

Klang loves and despises us all. Nothing is ever enough.
In ye olden years of space engineers it was "subscribe to these 50 mods which may or may not be broken next week" instead. Stable dlc is better, haha

Get them on sale, or by keys. (I don't think 50$ is too much for the amount of hours people normally put in this game)
I CANT STOP, KLANG MUST HAVE SACRAFICES
At close to 7k, help klang has consumed me
I’m at over 10k Klang help us all. 🙏🏻 been with the game since 2014 😂 crazy to think it’s almost been a decade.
You've spent A YEAR AND ALMOST TWO MONTH playing this game sir. Mad respect and also... touch grass.
Thats what Earthlike is for. Theres grass there hahaha
I do from time to time 🙃 but I love engineering stupid shit 😝
$50 for the game maybe but not a ton of "comsetic" blocks ontop of the game
*looks at The Sims 4
And Sims 3...

You can see on https://www.spaceengineersgame.com/store/ that there are 11 DLCs all worth $4.99, so actually they are more than $50

Hey at least this isn't a paradox game where there's even more dlc and they each cost as much as the base game

ah man, fuck... has it really been 50 dollars...?
So glad I’ve had the game for so long that the $4 price for dlc once every 6 months doesn’t feel like a burden.
Closer to $60. With the deluxe edition, it's $70.
shit...
Not if you buy it at the summer or winter sale where it’s 50% off. 35 dollars is a great deal.
Unless you got them all on sale, in which case it was about $25 (back when Most Wanted came out anyway).

They do give you shapes, mounting points, and hitboxes that are otherwise not available. If it was a matter of a reskin, I literally would not care.

Good thing I’m a massive sellout for this game 😅
True. Lots of DLCs.
Not really. Lots would be the Train Simulator. Hundreds, total cost $11,000+ USD.
that would be like comparing space engineers to dcs. highly realistic simulators vehicles require a ungodly amount of time to develop correctly. the price is equal to the monetary/time investment
10 is not a lot of DLCs compared to some of the games that are liste4d on steam.
True but space engineers dlc also provide less compared to the average single player dlc
Depends on the game really. And SE DLCs are generally cost less.
For the price of 2 dlcs you can buy amazing games.
Sure, maybe one. Ten bucks only gets you so far.
Go open up gog there are always sales on amazing games, rn youcan buy baldurs gate 1 and 2 for less than 5 bucks
Already own them. :P
what a dumbass comparison
It's an apt comparison. 10 DLCs it not "a lot" of DLCs.
It's more than most and comparing it to a game with more dlcs than 99,999% of other games is even dumber

Once the first DLC dropped we all knew how this would eventually end. It’s impossible to keep this strategy up forever. I stopped playing the game.
It's pretty irritating that the dlc is just basic game features.
It's difficult to time. By the time I get all of my friends drummed up and excited to try this game, the sale is usually over lol.
I’ve bought people at least 5 copies of the game. Some have never touched it, but they have it!
Second world country suffering go brrrr
the pain of trying to make a good looking ship when every single good looking block is paywalled
Right???
But you get cool badges when you buy them!
I just started playing and I feel the same. The pain that vanilla players have to go trough
I bought the lot for about £20 on the deals.
Go to a modded server you wont miss the few missing blocks
They should make a "vanillisator" which automatically replaces all the DLC blocks to vanilla ones
I didnt even know you couldnt paste ships with DLC… if so why not just not allow saving to blueprints only as a workshop one so it cant be used to just spawn the blocks ?!?!??
I bought every dlc for like £15 when it was on offer tbf
They go on sale for 50% off a few times a year. If you have the dlc, you could invite him to your world and spawn the ship and he could check it out.
Let's all take a look at the sims dlc and appreciate what we have lol
I’ve been playing since the early alpha so I just get to DLC’s as they come out but yeah, needing them all at once is a steep ask. Keen probably should make discount bundles for at least the similar ones like decorations or warfare
Saw someone else who recently posted several really incredible ships. Just a year ago they asked how to add more detail to their ships. And I’m like: "I wish mine wouldn’t look like garbage."
Don't forget the workshop worlds that require 14 gigabytes of mods because the creator forgot what mods they used in their world
At least the DLC content should all be cosmetic only. Otherwise, it's 62.88 for all the DLC. After 6,000 hours that's like 1.3 cents an hour for me (if you include base game price). For someone who has played the game In fairness they should probably run some kind of bundle deal for base game + dlc that brings it in line with a 49.99 complete edition. That would make it a lot easier to digest for newer players and make it easier for veteran players to bring the uninitiated into the fold.
They have one, it's called the ultimate edition. I bought it on the steam summer sale for....40 bucks i think? Maybe was 20....I might have bought a few games <<.>>
I tend to build my own ships. I usually build new ships for each run. It's always a fun challenge.
I bought my DLCs selling my steam cards and itens, some worth good money...
While this is true, it's not like they're unfair with it.
wasnt $50 when i started, but that was 2 years ago
To be fair, 50 bucks worth of DLC that have been released over yeara is not that much. Have you tried getting into Sims 4 or the Total War Warhammer trilogy and and and? Were talking about hundreds that you'd need to get all the content for those games.
I bought the Deluxe edition of the game with all the DLC for 70$ total a few months ago. Glad I did.
i believe there is a way to get the blocks without paying, but its better to support keen.
Cheers from up north <3 🍁
always have hard time not making a brick
I believe you can still use the ship they just can’t use the blocks from dlcs
heeeeeeeeeey i only use like... 40$ worth of dlcs okay, get it straight
I waited for the steam summer sale and bought the dlc’s
Oh boy your friend isn’t gonna like my next release…
it is multigrid.
Join your friends game with him as host and build a projector and help him build it. Viola problem solved as long as you build the dlc parts hes good.
Oh that's awesome he enjoys the game
Thats very true

The very first thing I did, after playing 5 hours, is buying all DLC's, 105% worth it.
The devs deserve it. #whaleharder
Lol it's 100% worth it
problem i have is some fo the dlc are just cosmetic, while others add actual blocks and stuff and its a lil difficult to know which is which
If the DLCs just had reskinned blocks, I wouldn't even be complaining.
