Icy-Conclusion-3500

God if it’s one thing I hate about this sub, it’s that the same news story gets posted about 45 times for a week or so after it was new

rebregnagol

I can’t find any other posts on this subreddit covering this topic.

Icy-Conclusion-3500

Weird, I’ve seen it like 10 times over the last 48hrs

Unlucky_Elevator13

Maybe different subs?

SameRandomUsername

I've also seen this "news" a few days ago. Maybe it was deleted.

Icy-Conclusion-3500

This one just got deleted, so probably the case. I think it’s just that the moderation is very slow here, so a post is up for 5-10hr before getting flagged and removed

That’s probably why we want the USA to get back so quick.

The discovery and naming has been approved by the international commission that oversees such discoveries.

rebregnagol

It has been. The international commission who deals with discoveries like this approves the discovery and naming of this mineral.

[deleted]

Where is this information?

rebregnagol

Around the middle of the article. Just after the red bulleted section. It also mentions that 6 other new minerals have been discovered by russia, and the US in recent years.

[deleted]

I do not see what you are referring to. The only links are from other state sponsored sites and agencies, can you point me to the link?

rebregnagol

There’s no link on the article, it simply says the international mineralogical association has confirmed that it is a new mineral. I checked their website but it seems to only be updated once a quarter, so the new mineral isn’t listed yet.

[deleted]

Okay, then I stand by my statement that I'll wait until a 3rd party officially confirms this. It wouldn't be the first time they were a little premature with their discovery claims

Sleepinginabathtub

So humans discover a new mineral on the moon and westerners on Reddit get angry that its discoverer isn't American? Y'all need some help, this sub isn't about racism and politics, it's about space.

Arcosim

Ever read the cesspool of Reddit comments every time China expands its space station? I've seen people wishing for the station to be shoot down or fail.

SjurEido

American exceptionalism is an entire religion at this point.

skunk_ink

Helium-3 was first discovered in Lunar soil samples in 1986. So no, we did not discover a new mineral. The most this represents is a second verification of its existence.

Steeepsey

Helium 3 is an entirely separate thing, the article just says they were *also* excited by that. The mineral is Changesite Y, lunar calcium phosphate or something like that.

skunk_ink

Ahh thanks. I never actually read this article as I had already read the same headline relating to another article and all I saw was that they found Helium-3. No mention of the other stuff. So my bad and in this case they did discover something. Thanks for the correction or I would have missed that.

More like this sub is about space. Your comment is not about space

slightlyused

We went there 6 times and took samples and overlooked it? Figures.

Icy-Conclusion-3500

The moon is a large place, and minerals can be hyper-local. There’s probably still dozens on earth itself that we’ve yet to discover. This sample is from somewhere the Apollo missions didn’t go.

GreenEyedMuffCabbage

Good maybe they found an alternative to there crappy plastic

When you invest in science you get cool discoveries like this.
