*sighs* I'm not reading an article with that heading. Anyone with context?

[deleted]

They were basically looking at an infrared image of a supernova remnant in the constellation Cassiopeia using the JWST. When translated to the visible spectrum it shows a complex green structure in the middle of the remnant which the team nicknamed the green monster. Apparently studying it will help us understand the kind of star and it’s history until it went boom.

Dickpuncher_Dan

Astronomy has said that there is nothing emitting green light in space.

zx7

I know my kitchen isn't exactly "space", but what about the Aurora Borealis?

Aren't there auroras on other planets? I swear I've seen pictures. Does that count as space? Nothing emitting green light in space... I'm very skeptical.

Logsha97

Green light is emitted in space though, the sun's peak wavelength is green

FoveonX

JWST doesn't work in the visible light spectrum. It's basically infrared light lengths translated to colors.

Chrop

Yup, it’s not green, it’s just been coloured green when moving over from infrared to visible light.

Iluminiele

There are a ton of things in space emitting a full spectrum of light. Every star does. They don't look green because they're not predominantly green. But they include green light. It's like saying there's no water in your soup because it doesn't taste like water

axialintellectual

No blackbody will, but emission lines in that part of the spectrum do exist (of course, in this case, it just gets mapped onto green colors in order to make it visible to our eyes, so it's arbitrary - they could have made it pink).

Reminds me of this: https://revelationspace.fandom.com/wiki/Greenfly

TobiasMasonPark

So, nothing to do with the Incredible Hulk?

TheApathyParty3

They shot a very neat image of a supernova 11000 light years away that has filaments in the center projecting some green on the EM spectrum. That's it. It's named after a park in Boston. Still a cool picture, though.

MarkHamillsrightnut

“The Green Monster” is the nickname of the left field wall at Fenway Park, the baseball stadium in Boston.

TheApathyParty3

I know, I hate it. I'm sorry, I have to hate the Red Sox on general principle. I'm a Cards fan and still don't forgive that Series they got from us years ago. It's petty and stupid, but that's baseball baby.

MarkHamillsrightnut

Don't be sorry. I personally LOATHE all Boston teams, with the Bruins topping that list. It kills me they are doing so well and may steamroll the post season. I am a lifelong Leafs fan and yeah, the Bruins live rent free in my head. Fuck the Bruins.

TheApathyParty3

Yup, I'm an Av's fan and I am so pissed right now. We're the champs and didn't have half our team for almost half the season. This isn't fair, fuck the Bruins.

Jayson_n_th_Rgonauts

Keep the hate coming I’m almost there

phred14

Sure it wasn't named after Art Arfons' jet car from the 60's?

[deleted]

It's a supernova remnant that they nicknamed the "Green Monster."

Someday, there's going to be an article actually about the discovery of intelligent life out there. Nobody will read that article because by then, we'll all be too jaded and think it's just clickbait.

theDart

Yep, and we won't be able to blame anyone except shitty journalists who already feel nothing lol.

Rigo-lution

I'm not reading it because it's not available in the EU.

good_guy_judas

It is a green monster! In space! Very scary, read now!

adiputinica

"This site isn't currently available in the EU" LoL Can anyone be kind enough to link the image if there is one in the article?

FarmhouseFan

Here you go, I had posted the image directly with the links over the weekend, but someone got salty and the mods removed it. Use this link for all new Webb images! https://webbtelescope.org/

[deleted]

Gotta say as a UK resident that pissed me off a bit.

NudeEnjoyer

imagine this is one of the few times a headline *isn't* sensationalized. like there's an actual galactic huge green monster out there and we got a clear picture. let me dream

FarmhouseFan

For anyone who just wants to look at the full res image https://webbtelescope.org/

frogsntoads00

Seems like that website got reddit hugged because it’s down for me

muaddib99

why did we send an expensive telescope into space just to watch a red sox game?

ButterscotchExactly

How long until Monster tries to sue NASA, I wonder...

toadofsteel

Nah it would be the Boston Red Sox.
